    Last Supper Syndrome?

I did this, gained all of my"for insurance purposes" weight loss back. I was so sick of eating and being stuffed I embraced my pre-op and flew through the two weeks quickly. I lost the weight gained and with all the drinking and mini meals I feel like I am always satisfied.

    Dealing with people...

The hardest part about chronic "dieting" is fighting cravings that pop up when I'm in social situations. For example, yesterday, I wanted to pack up my baby and visit my mother's house so she could spend time with her grandson. But I didn't go. I didn't go because I was afraid I would end up falling off my low carb plan. For one, I could have been "ambushed" with a pizza or dessert that they had. Or, oftentimes my parents stress me out with their comments, etc., so that could have led me to emotional eating. Third, just being around them makes me want to eat. I associate their house with eating. Unfortunately, my parents frequently indulge in cakes and high calorie foods. Now take today. Suddenly my SO decides that he wants us to visit a church that is an hour away. Of course, I'm panicking. I went ahead and cooked my food for today, but I'm worried that the road trip will make me fall off plan. I associate long car rides with being able to stop for food. I know that this is not the way to live--either overeating with no restrictions, or eating right, but avoiding everyone and staying at home. My hope is that by the time I'm 6 months post op, I will be at my goal weight and I will never have to dodge a social situation again due to fear of breaking a diet and/or weight gain. My hope is that the sleeve will allow me to eat just a little of whatever is available or whatever I choose, and then I get full and that's it. Or, if that's not possible, just make it so that I'm so afraid to eat certain foods that I bring my own foods with me.
  3. I just had my lap-band surgery on Tuesday, Feb 8th and I feel great, but I have gained 7-8 lbs of Fluid in my stomach. I don't feel bloated or uncomfortable, just my stomach is pretty distended. Anyone else have that occur and hav any suggestions on how to rectify? Thank you, Lori

    Where Did It All Start?

In 2004 I had the lapband done and suffered with it for 7 years before I had it removed.I lost weight gained weight, found with therapy what I thought was normal...lost that again and regained it all back. After having the band out in 2011 it took a while to get brave enough to do the sleeve. With the bad experience I had with the band I never really thought I would actually do the sleeve. The thing was that diet and not dieting took up all my mental energy for way too long.I have been thoroughly stuck for the past few years. It was just time to get unstuck and the sleeve seemed to be the only to do it. The surgery was done on the 13th of March and today is the 17th,day 3 after surgery. Today I have been drinking tea with milk, chicken broth, consomme, yakult light and hot water. It all goes down great. The only thing I cannot drink is any kind of juice. It falls hard into my stomache and I realized that it makes acid as my chest tightens and I struggle for a while to get it to open every time I had some.I must confess the yakult (drinking yogurt) did the same just now...maybe I will just give this a pass for another day or two. The only Thing I am not sure about today is the headache that keeps coming back every 6 hours.I am drinking enough, have slept enough not done too much today....just not sure why Im getting this terrible headache. O,one more thing.Every time the dr stops my blood pressure meds before surgery I come out of the hospital at least 5kg's heavier...10 pounds...(the tablet have a very powerful diuretic in it) And this time is no different. My weight is not even back to what it was before surgery so I have to be patient and wait until I can start drinking it again, which seems to be a week after surgery. This sleeve is really going to be a prosess of changing my habits and make me more patient...as I have decided to learn to go with the flow and to not sweat the small stuff so much anymore. Cant wait to see what the next few days bring. xxo
  5. Hello all...been a while since I've been on here. My wife had her band put in during April of 2008. My wife has been having some issues with weight gain/pain for the last few months. Today an ECG showed that her Lap-Band has completely eroded through her stomach. She was told by the GI doctor that she would have to have it taken out, let her stomach heal, and then, if she wants another, put another band in. We called the Dr's office that did the band, told them the results and they scheduled an appointment for next monday. Anybody ever have this happen to them???

    TP-NO

I am having some issues with swelling that are causing my nausea when I eat. They are hoping this will give me enough to heal. I just have read it can cause weight gain and since every post bariatric patient is concerned about that I thought I'd ask...did you experience normal weight loss on TPN? Also is everything okay now? No leak? If you don't mind me asking
  7. so when i went inot the hospital yesterday i was down 10 lbs from the preop diet...then while in the hospital all ihad was IV then water and tea and 2 cups of broth..then i came hoe and had gained 6 lbs. How much does the band weigh? Or is this from all the iv fluid...i am very confused...did not expect to come home gaining 6 lbs from no eating

    The Elusive Weight Maintenance

We all know exactly what weight gain is; the scale goes up in numbers, our clothes start to get tight, it takes more effort to get out of a chair, the seat belt is tighter and we just don’t feel as well. We all know what weight loss is; the scale shows us a lower number, our clothes hang funny and fall off of us, people start complimenting us about the way we look, we feel better, and we need less medicine. But weight maintenance is something that we all have failed to understand. We have gone up and down in our weight our entire lives, struggling to keep the weight off, gaining weight over and over again. Gaining it has always been easy, I just look at brownies and I would gain two pounds. I never understood my neighbor who was always a perfect size 8 and ate everything in sight. We all know people like that. What has always been missing, is weight maintenance – it was something that I had never achieved. It was elusive to me. I was a constant yo yo. I would lose the weight and thought I could maintain my weight loss but those old habits would sneak back in and sabotage me one more time. The frustration grew every time that I would go down and then back up again and many times with a bonus extra pounds. Each time getting more and more frustrated. When you buy a new car you shop around to get the best deal and then you pick the one that best suits you and your lifestyle. When you pick it up, it comes with a manual, a set instructions and guidelines. You need to put gas into the gas tank to make the car move and every 3, 0000 mile change the oil. Then every once in a while you need to take it in to the dealer who opens it up and looks inside. They make some adjustments and then they give you a bill. You pay the bill and then you are on your way. You need to wash and wax your car so it always looks good. Well, if you think about this is the same as having Bariatric Surgery. The new car is the same as your new pouch. You decide what kind of surgery that is best for you and your lifestyle. You shop around for the best surgeon. You are given a set of instructions from your surgeon, just like you received with your car. You need to feed yourself protein and water to keep you going. Every few months you need to see the surgeon, to check under your hood to take sure your blood levels are good to keep you going in the best condition. You doctor will give you some suggestions to keep you running well and keep you on the right road to weight loss. You exercise and continually add more fuel. But then one day you stop checking the oil and washing the car. A rattle appears out of nowhere and you get used to the new noise coming from the right front of the car. A door ding shows up and you do not even notice the second or third one. You forget to check under the hood. For the bariatric patient this is the time that they start to stray from their doctors program, they start to gain a little weight, we go back to some of our old habits without even thinking about it. This is where we all start to get into trouble. We think we do not need support group anymore, after all we have lost a lot of weight and we think that we are doing just fine. Then all of a sudden we have a wreck, we got on the scale and it is up by 20 or 25 pounds. It is time to call the Auto club tow truck. We need to get towed back to the right road. The Maintenance Road. We all have heard the new Weight Watchers ad campaign, that diets do not work, every one of us know that diets do not work. We have tried them all and look where we ended up; heavier and more frustrated. The only thing that will have lasting effects on us is when we are ready to make lifestyle changes. These changes will make us not only lose the weight but to keep it off for life. To lose weight and keep it off, the best approach is to focus on lifestyle changes and develop an eating plan that's enjoyable, yet healthy and low in calories. This approach will result in weight loss that you can live with - that is, that you can maintain over a long period of time. We need to attend support groups and get a constant stream of positive motivation to keep us on the Maintenance Road. It is easy to get lost and to end up in a dead end; your support group can direct you back at anytime. We are here to help you achieve the goals that are important to you. We each need to learn to make it a Lifestyle that you can live with and enjoy day in and day out to continue to maintain your weight loss. Successful Make it a Lifestyle weight-maintenance strategies Now that you have lost the weight, you can't stop your hard work. Weight maintenance requires daily exercise, healthy eating, a long-term commitment and constant attention. The following habits are essential for you to develop to achieve long term weight maintenance: Healthy snacks and meals - Focus on low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Keep saturated fat low and limit sweets and alcohol. Remember that no one food offers all the nutrients you need. Choose a variety of foods throughout the day. Remember to eat two bites of dense protein to one bite of anything else. Exercise program - One of the most important things you can do for weight maintenance is to continue a aggressive exercise program. Studies suggest that it only takes 30 to 60 minutes of moderately intense physical activity daily to maintain weight loss. Moderately intense physical activities include swimming, fast walking, biking, and hiking. Know and avoid your food traps - Know which situations can trigger you’re out-of-control eating. The best way to identify these food traps and emotional eating is to keep a food journal. For as long as you find it helpful, write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you're feeling and how hungry you are. This will help you understand and stay in control of your eating behaviors. Regularly monitor your weight - People who weigh themselves at least once a week are more successful in keeping off the pounds. Monitoring your weight can tell you whether your efforts are working and can help you become aware of small weight gains before they become larger. Be consistent - Sticking to your new lifestyle plan during the week, on the weekends, and amidst vacation and holidays increases your chances of long-term maintenance. Attend Support Group - Getting support is critical, whether through a friend, family member, trained professional or support group, can ultimately mean the difference between your success and failure.

What I Did During My Lapband Vacation

It's official. I gained 6 lbs since my "unfill" on March 10. It's probably not a full 6 lbs because I'm very bloated in a womanly way - I'm guessing it's about 3 lbs once I unload all this fluid. The thing is, I really don't feel badly about the weight gain. I've been able to wrap my head around the idea that this is a process and with any long term endeavor, there are ups and downs. In this case, it's still mostly downs (as in weight going down) and I'm way ahead of where I was mentally and physically, even a month ago. Sure, a month ago the weight was falling off but it was at the price of vomiting, feeling unwell and feeling mentally punished for being fat all the time. With the unfill, I was able to replenish both my body and my mind. I like to think of this period as a mini vacation from the band that allowed me to refresh and start anew...just like coming back from vacation and going back to school or work. Yesterday, I got a fill. Only 1cc which brought me back to 6cc, exactly what I had after my first fill. I couldn't feel any restriction when I had my soup for lunch and fluids go down fine but I decided on some soft cheese, salad and hummus for dinner and I could feel it. Yay! Restriction is back and not too much. I may still need another adjustment but I'm really ready to get back on the wagon and correct these bad patterns I fell right back into over the last month: 1) Drinking while eating 2) Bread, bread, bread 3) Eating too fast and not chewing well enough - even with very little restriction I had a bad PB incident with a bagel 4) Slider foods and candy 5) Diet soda 6) Booze 7) Snacking It was a great vacation - eating, drinking, my birthday, having too much fun with food - but I'm back now and tightening the reins. Happy Easter, Passover, Spring to all!

    Birth control question

I started Nuvaring because I was getting nauseous with birth control and it is working great. No weight gain and all of the benefits of being on BC (greatly minimized TOM issues). I highly recommend it. I should have gone with this option years ago.
  13. I am happy I decided to get the surgery. I have lost 25-30 easily in the past many times and regained it again. I started at 282 and am now today 259 on my second day of clear liquid diet and completed 10 of only protein shakes. I have lost a total of 22lbs. I am very excited and I am getting my Hiatial Hernia fixed as well. During my journey they discovered my Hiatial Hernia and Sleep apnea. I found out that sleep apnea can contribute to weight gain because your body is tired and you snack to compensate for that. Maybe that is why I have not been able to stay on the diet long enough to reach my goal along with stress and lives other events. I have been so excited about my journey that I have purchased some things to help me along the way after the surgery and these things I have been using now to keep me on my pre diet. I found an intelligent water bottle that keeps track of your intake and it has a straw that does not let air in your stomach "Hydracoach.com" also 2 different plates with covers that help with measuring your food consumption. They are Baribowl at "bariware.com" and EZ Weigh Plate at "store.ezweightplatestore.com". The baribowl is a tubberware type which is good for taking your lunch because it has 2 side that separate for hot and cold food so you can heat your food separately. On each side there are demarcations marks where you can slide these little plastic thin sleeves in to separate and measure 1oz sections and the whole bowl is 8 oz. A baratric surgeon invented it. It makes you feel/look like you are eating a lot, but is not deep at all. The other is a plate with cup like compartments that you can measure your food because the plate is semi-transparent and is also microwave safe. This I would use at home and especially when my husband cooks it will make it easier for him as well, he likes to cook and likes to make me a plate. Hope to connect and share ideas and accomplishments. Mybella

    Really??

I Feel your pain! I am in the same situation as you! On my first appt. I was 227 lbs with BMI @ 40.3. The nurse cautioned me that if I were to lose 2 lbs I would not qualify. That was on January 26th. I completed almost all my tests except for psych. Two weeks ago at my follow up I weighed in @ 229 lbs and the nurse cautioned me again that the Dr. didn't like it when we gain weight during this process because he wants to make sure we take it seriously however I reminded her that if I lose 2 lbs I don't qualify. She just suggested with a smile that I keep the same weight. Now, two days ago my dietician appointment I am 234 lbs..OMG I gained 5 lbs in two weeks. The point is I am so nervous to lose the weight, gain the weight, and maintain the weight that its freakin driving me insane! The only benefit is that prior to my first appointment I had seven months of an approved weight loss documentated plan @ a weight loss center, fortunately I just have to wait for my psych appointment which is next week and then they will submit to insurance. Thank you for your post it makes me feel that there is someone else in the same boat as me. I wish you good luck on your journey and I am sure with your kids ball season on the horizon you will be too busy running around the time will fly!

Not Losing Much Need Help Before I Go Crazy

I have had many periods of plateau's as well as some weight gain on my journey. I was banded over two years ago. But the best thing to remember is that although it is slow.. it is coming off. And it may take you longer than some others that you see on this site.. but it will happen for you! I have lost over 80 pounds... and Im still not there yet.. but hey.. thats better then where I was! My struggle now is making sure I do eat.. so make sure that you are eating because not eating you would think you would loose.. but you dont.. and Iv'e been stuck here for a while... so make sure you eat first thing in the morning to start your metabolism and keep it going all day with healthy snacks and good meals. You will get there... but it is a journey that takes time~!

    Gaining weight pre op

I'm sorry this happened to you. I have no use for health care providers who are mean. I don't pay people to be mean to me. I pay them to do their jobs in an honest and professional way. Did she at least evaluate the weight gain in light of your medical history or take time to really study your food diary and evaluate it seriously?
  18. So this past weekend I ate real healthy and I gained two lbs by tuesday morning. After a bad tuesday i ate bad tuesday night and this morning i woke up to having lost the weight gained and also having lost another two pounds. I dont fet it!

    brain vs. stomach hunger

I use to be skinny, in fact very unhealthy type skinny, and it wasn't from lack of eating. My sister loves to remind me of the 6 hot dogs I'd eat and not gain an ounce. I went out of my way well into my 30's trying to gain, then boom it slowly started hitting me. I really believe all those years of eating things I didn't like but because someone said they were high in calories and they would help me gain I ate....I developed some seriously bad habits so as my metabolism and life style slowed down the weight gain increased big time. No more anorexic looking skinny but instead a bery unheathy unable to do much fat chick. Right now my biggest problem is hubby like to come home, eat dinner play on our computers for a little while then watch tv together till he falls asleep. I unfortunately associate that time with snack time. I found out quickly that air popped popcorn and chex mix could easily be eaten around the band. I also gained six pounds doing it, ok so I did throw in some carrot cake as well telling myslef I deserved it I've done well. When I got on the scale and saw the 6 lbs back I wanted to cry. Thankfully I worked really hard and got rid of them fast. I've been stuck for awhile now and actually feel very restriceted, I know that I was eating around my band. I've made a pact to give up the pop corn and chex mix, substitute sugar free pop sickles and lettuce salad for a week. So far I've lost a new 1 1/2 lbs. It will be 6 months on the 23rd and I still fight with head hunger but seeing that scale get off the # its been stuck at by simply making a deal with myself not to eat around my band for a week. Not sure what I will try next but I too would love to hear how to get past triggers and head hunger

    Teenagers Getting Wks?

I guess it would depend on the teen. I know we have some teen on here that have done very well. My thoughts are along the line with Kadeez..... i would think LB would be better. I'm not incline to agree with the "emotional eating" part. I think kids are over weight because of the stuff they eat not why they eat. McDonald's, burger king.... fast foods. I know that's what contributed to my weight gain. Teens these days are very much on the go.... and they eat tons of fast food. I say, if they go thru all the prerequisites and they have extensive education ..... they why not. Why go thru life Fat if they don't have too....
  21. Hi all, So, I was just discharged from Hospital yesterday. I had yet another bout of my D.R.E.S.S syndrome. (I had two episodes back-to-back) When I have these flare-ups, I have to go on high doses of IV corticosteroids called Methylprednisolone. Well, the last flare up I had (in the middle of Oct) they gave me the IV and then my treatment was done. Well, I flared up again within 5 days. So this time they did the IV steroids and now they are doing a long tapering down dose of oral Prednisone to see if this extra treatment will nip these flare ups in the bud. (like over 3 months) I am now also on a different corticosteroid/immunosuppressant called Cyclosporine and apparently going to be on it for a year. *whimper *whimper With being on steroids there are A LOT of side effects. Guess which one I'm most petrified of..? WEIGHT GAIN! -it might not be literally weight (or fat) gain but it could be Water weight. -my appetite may increase -my weight can redistribute -I may feel extreme exhaustion all of the time -I may feel jittery and shaky -I may be forever irritable -I may be severely out of breath even with a mild walk -I may have insomnia ** the reason I say I may have these particular symptoms is because I did have them the last time the doctor had me on this tapering dose of the steroids. The difference back then was that I didn't have the WLS, and I DID gain actual weight because I ate a sh*t ton more than usual, wasn't watching it closely and didn't even think about exercising at all. I'm devastated to be back on these steroids and I feel like I am going to be putting my weight loss on hold for at least the 3 months. I weighed myself this morning and I am still up 4 pounds from last week. Even in hospital I ate the best I could, ate my Protein, drank my water, and walked around as best I could. Came home yesterday and the first thing I did was went out for a trail walk. Am I going to be stuck for at least 3 months? WAHHHH To make a LONG story short; I am looking for other people to tell me that they beat the odds and lost weight while on this nasty medication. Please tell me that I am not going to work my ass off, struggle as all heck, but not get anywhere! Has anyone been on Prednisone and lost weight anyways? I know it'll increase my appetite but I will ignore hunger and still eat what I'm supposed to eat. I know I will most likely experience water weight too, but I will do my absolute very best to beat the side effects of Prednisone. I guess I need a little bit of hope that I might actually win this battle.... Heather
  22. Hi Penpen, If you are a stable weight right now, and not fluctuating up and down, then don't be worried about weight gain during pregnancy as long as you gain the recommended 25-35 pounds. This extra weight gain is normal and easily drops off after delivery. Just be sure to plan a healthy pregnancy diet when you do get pregnant, and keep a pregnancy diet plan as well. You should be fine. Good luck... http://www.signs-of-pregnancy-week-by-week.com/weight-gain-during-pregnancy.html

    Bye bye band

I had my band removed yesterday and I have to wait 3 months as well. I hope to get sleeved the end of May. I am actually looking forward to having a moment between my band and my revision. I had my band for nearly 5 years and due to all of the issues I had with it (food intolerances, vomiting, etc.,) I have developed new bad food habits that I need to undo before being sleeved. I need the time to get my "head" right because I think that is where the majority of my problems come from. I am a bit worried about weight gain during this healing period though.
  24. I've gained 5 lbs. since I saw the NUT in August and my pre-op appt is this Friday. Do you think they'll cancel my surgery??? Any suggestions on how to lose these 5 lbs. by Friday? TIA

    Weight gain

Just need to post this for some help and encouragement. I had my sleeve Dec 2015 and lost about 80 lbs. I felt good and only wanted to lose another 20 or so pounds. These past few months I took on a new position at work and have moved so weight loss was not really at the forefront. I still feel good restriction the problem is I noticed I snack a lot more even from before surgery. I knew it was bad and getting out of hand but just got off the scale and I'm actually up 10 lb. I know this isn't the end of the world but of course I start feeling like I ruined my sleeve. I have a plan to start fresh again tomorrow maybe even try the 5-day reset. Just looking for others who may have gone through this and bounce back or anything you can help me with. I know what I'm doing wrong and I know what I need to change. I keep telling myself I have lost 75 lb even before surgery with Weight Watchers so now I have to think I am just a normal person that needs to lose weight. For some reason I keep getting scared that it is going to be harder because of the surgery which doesn't really make sense but I guess I'm freaking out a little bit. I guess the feeling of the honeymoon being over just has me really upset right now that I didn't take full advantage and may have ruined it. Thanks!
