Help! Lap Band Veteren With Food And Fluid Consumption Issues...
gramgram replied to liberteh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had a similar experience this past 2 weeks. Sometimes I can eat a little and do fine, then after 30 minutes or so, burping. Then other times I can not even drink anything? I was afraid I might have a slip.... -
Can't wait for my 1st fill
JustWatchMe replied to finding_me_again's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
After I was banded I was on full liquids for six weeks. I was hungry. They sure started you on solids pretty fast. I was less hungry when I had high Protein liquids and didn't eat between meals. I also made sure not to drink for half an hour or more, even after a liquid meal. It's a huge adjustment for us who are used to eating until full. It's a process of retraining our bodies to recognize satiety on less food. It's very hard until the band is adjusted, but it gets much easier after that. Hang in there. Up the protein if you can. Also, call your nutritionist and s/he may have some ideas for you as well. Good luck! -
Okay, I think I can answer this one! The band is adjusted to allow an individual to lose 1-2 lbs per week until goal. I believe at that point, some of the restriction is taken out, therefore, letting you maintain but not gain. But, once a bandster, always a bandster and the bandster rules and eating changes made with the band have to be adhered to regardless of the fill level. HTH Jacky

Hi Megs, I got a fill of 2mls at my first post op appointment. I would think 5-6kgs in 4 weeks is a great result. I found it took my 2nd fill before I felt proper restriction. At the moment I feel like I'm close to the elusive 'sweet spot' as I've had fills and removals to get here. I still struggle to eat stuff like bread and dry meats but most things I can get down as long as I eat slowly and chew properly. Good luck!

My pre-op diet was simple. I couldn't take in more than 1000 calories for two weeks. My cousin was on a two week liquid diet. It depends on your surgeon.

Gastric Sleeve Newbie with LOTS of ?'s
bigbang52 replied to skinny18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How much you lose is up to you. Typically they say about 60% of excess weight but it can be more or less depending on your ability and desire to exercise and eat right. But the battle isn't with your stomach- it's with your mind. We have an addiction and you have to treat it as such. And getting active will help. I took up swimming because I have bad knees and it's been great. For a few weeks to a few months eating will be much different than you're used too. Full very fast. EAT SLOWLY. If you overeat I guarantee you will only want to do it once. Follow the plan your doctor gives you and don't deviate. They have a reason they do what they do. You will gradually be able to eat more but never like you used to. I just had my first ice cream in 4 years. 1 scoop filled me up. And no real desire to have more. The quantity you'll be able to eat will vary depending on what you're eating and how fast. But don't push it. I've had to find other things to replace my eating. I can still eat most things just in much smaller quantities. I don't do rice or much pasta or potatoes as they fill me up very fast and no room for the healthier- and tastier- things. I felt great after surgery. Told the doctor I've had worse paper cuts. No pain, no gas, no upset stomach. But I'm one of the lucky ones. Expect some problems like gas and just have a heat pad ready - it helps. There can be complications- that's true with any surgery but, again, follow instructions for hygiene and type of food. Excess skin? Oh yeah! I've lost about 250 pounds and I look like a partially deflated balloon. But I'm working at losing some more to have skin removal. Need a BMI of around 35 before that happens. How long again is a matter of how much and how fast you lose. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! I wish I had done it 10 years before I did. But fear kept me from trying. I heard a quote bt Will Smith. " God puts the best things in life on the other side of fear." How true! Finally I would recommend a book called Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies. Very informative. Good luck -
Nope. Sorry. You can use weights to tone but it won't do anything for the skin - though it might help fill out the skin a little if that makes sense.... Your body will shift around a LOT during your loss phase. You just have to dress as best as you can and realize that it is all for the better in the end. I reached goal several months ago but even though my weight has stayed the same, people keep saying I look thinner - and it is just the "parts" shifting around. PS - My brachioplasty is in 5 weeks. Can. Not. Wait!!

Anyone lose a bunch before surgery?
shrinkinggrl replied to GeorgieGirl1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
GG I am in a stall right now...the dreaded "3rd week stall". Yargh. So I am having the same panicky thoughts. Sigh. Oh, well. I know that logically I am eating too few calories NOT to lose weight. But it really is disheartening to see that # freeze in place. I need to back away from the scale and not go near it for a few days or a week. Hope you are fabulous! -
Anyone lose a bunch before surgery?
jenn20 replied to GeorgieGirl1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 55 pounds in 5 months before surgery and right now I am 5 weeks out and have lost 30 pounds. I actually thought this same exact questions the night before surgery. I thought...'well I have been eating very little before the sleeve already, so would it make a big difference after surgey? Will I still loose the weight like everyone else?'..... and the answer is yes! so don't worry about it. By the way congrats on loosing that weight! It only makes it closer to goal!! You loose so fast in the beginning that it makes you only jump closer to goal by loosing that weight before surgery! Good luck on your journey and keep us posted! -
24 hours after surgery
joatsaint replied to Bridget312001's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It does get better. I didn't eat anything for the 1st 5 days. I was in a lot of pain and my stomach rebelled with even the smallest bites. I wasn't able to eat a whole can of Soup in a day until the 3rd week. I could tell when I was getting full when I'd start to burp, and I'd have to eat very very slow. I'm talking 1/2 tsp every 5 minutes. I could take one bite to many and be in misery. I was still learning how much I could hold. So try to hang in there. It does get better, but it takes time. -
It's so hard not to compare ourselves to others, but this is our own individual journey. I'm 7 weeks out today and down 26 pounds. The day of surgery I was 205. I tell myself this is way more than I could have lost on my own. It will come off, just keep following the plan!!

I think some of the weight is from the crackers/sweets/fried food and brownies; and the some is from the high salt content that is fast/fried food. If you MUST have a snack at night I would make it chicken breast, or veggies. Because crunchy carbs are my down fall I don't keep them in my house at all. Full disclosure I had chips and salsa, and cheesecake at a Super Bowl party and it took me a week to loose those 4 pounds that were there Monday morning. Stupid Patriots!!!

I have a rumbly tummy and I will be 4 weeks post op on Monday. Every time anything hits my pouch it rumbles! LOL:-) but it's all good because the weight is coming off...I'm very very happy! surgery date: 7/30/12

When I weighed myself at home on 2/6/12, I weighed 256. I was so happy because I had lost 2 pounds (I was 258 the previous Monday). I stuck close to my diet all week, but did cheat a few times with some crackers and sweets in the evenings. I still exercised each day though. Then, over the weekend, we had friends over and they brought Long John Silvers for dinner. I knew it was bad, but I didn't want to insult them, so I had 2 pieces of fish, 2 hushpuppies, and cole slaw. While we were playing cards, I also ended up snacking on brownies and Cookies that my husband had made. I knew it was bad and a no-no, but it had been sooooo long since I had those things. Well, Monday morning, I had an adjustment appointment and I weighed in at 261. I was so angry and mad at myself. I couldn't figure out how I gained 5 pounds in 1 week, but I bust my butt to only lose 2 pounds the previous week.... Is this possible, or was it possibly Water retention. My PA gave me a big lecture about carbs and how they affect blood sugar, insulin production, and fat storage. I felt like a little kid who had failed their science test. I weighed today and I'm back down to 258, which I'm happy about, but I'm still at a loss of the 5 pounds in 1 week. My scales are also very accurate. They are usually within 1 pound with my doctor's scales. I know there will be bumps in this road, but I didn't realize one cheat day would produce those horrible results. Needless to say, I'm back on the wagon this week and hopefully next Monday, I can see that 256 or less again....

Hello ladies! I just received my date for December 1st-I'm also very excited about finally reaching this point (I had a 6 month supervised weight requirement for insurance). My pre-op appointments are on 11/20 and 11/26 so I guess I'll also be on liquids the week of thanksgiving also. I believe my plan allows one lean meal per day so I'll get some nice turkey and veggies still ???? looking forward to seeing your progress! -
Stomach feels full?
James Marusek replied to ThreeCrows's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After surgery, the primary drivers are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary. Your body is converting the stored fat in your body into energy. Thus you lose weight. I had RNY surgery and was restricted to 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of food per meal at the six week mark. So I thought it strange that you were consuming a cup per meal. But there are a variety of surgeries such as Sleeve and the meal limit requirements will differ. There are many different types of Protein shakes out there. To me they all taste bad. I experimented until I found one that I could tolerate. In my case it was Muscle Milk Light. I used a blender (Ninja single serving size) to blend the powder to the proper consistency. I blended in a banana to mask the taste. -
You might not get a huge reduction in hunger after your first or second or more (if you're like me), but each fill was a stepping stone getting me closer to where I am now. I eat my doctor's prescribed three 1/2 cup meal plus a healthy snack, and I feel satiety that lasts four hours or longer. So, along the way, each fill helped with portion and hunger control, but I found the restriction to be fleeting. It took me several fills to get to where I am now. For some people it takes only a couple of fills and a lot less saline. Before my band, I was hungry all the time and fighting the urge to snack. Now, I rarely think about food between meals.

Day 4, things seem so easy, now I'm worried
Tamarita replied to Katheryn0303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations! I'm on day three post-op and was wondering the same thing. I'm able to meet my protein and water intake goals. I've actually wondered if my surgeon performed the correct surgery (even checked my surgical notes to be sure). I've read that things change once we transition to regular foods in that we will be able to feel ful. -
Get back to basics! Learn to say no to eating at bar-b-ques or eat before you go so you're not tempted to eat around the band.. and as far as the alcoholic drinks, those are super high calories that your body is just waiting for you to suck down so it can slam it to your hips... find a lower calorie alcholic drink if you feel you have to have it .. try looking up diabetic diet website .. there's sure to be a low cal drink on there .. concentrate on following the lap band rules for the last 6 weeks of summer and when you hit the labor day b-b-q, you'll be down quite a few more lbs and you'll feel great... it's temporary but hopefully it will get you motivated again!!! DO NOT GIVE UP!!! you deserve to be thinner and healthier!!!!

Day 4, things seem so easy, now I'm worried
biginjapan replied to Katheryn0303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Another March3rd-er (?) having an easy time of it. Since day 1 post op they given me vitamin water and a small yogurt drink to take in addition to water, and yesterday (day 3), I had some cottage cheese (considered a purée here - OMG in Estonia they must love it because the dairy case seems to have more cottage cheese options than yogurt ones), and baby food (the kind that come in the squeezable soft packs). It’s weird to me that both of these foods (in addition to other purées) were recommended to me, since that wasn’t the case when I had my first surgery in Mexico. In any event, since I’m living out of a hotel until next week I don’t have a lot of options food wise. Long story short, I’m doing well getting my liquids in, ok with the protein, and the purées didn’t cause any issues. If I hadn’t gone through this before, I’d be worried, but as it is I’m feeling great. The first time I did this (sleeve in 2017j, I was the only one in the hospital with little to no pain, was walking around at least 4 hours a day, and I actually accused my surgeon of not having done the surgery despite the scars and drainage tube coming out of my body. She told me that some people are just lucky, they go through surgery and the post op period without any problems and that I should be thankful for it. She even showed me a picture of my excised stomach to prove it. My current surgeon told me that he did check out my sleeve before he made it even smaller for the RNY and told me it was perfect, so whatever doubts I had in my mind for the past three years were put to rest. The one thing I do know is that transitioning to soft or mushy foods will be, not necessarily problematic, but that we’ll feel it more. That’s why I’m focusing on maintaining good habits (weigh or measure food, no drinking 30 min before and after any food), since I think that’s one of the main reasons my sleeve failed the first time. -
I am four weeks today, and I have been quite hungry lately. It is different than my pre-op hunger though, not that urgent feeling I used to get. I've been trying to be "mindful" of my current hunger and tell myself to experience the feeling and listen to my body. Don't get me wrong-I wish I was one whose hunger disappeared with surgery! Hang in there. You are not alone.

What are your daily totals?

@@Djmohr - interesting! Of course you are much further along than I. I'm looking forward to this Thursday when I begin week #3 and the "mechanically altered" stage of my diet. I'll be making my Magic Crust Quiche and it will be so nice to finally chew something for a change. Haven't done that since April 5th! Best of luck on your continued success!
