I’ve been in a stall for the last week - with a calorie deficit. But I know it’s my body reacting to not meeting my goals and being too pooped really do anything because of the lack of calories. Hang on - we will move again. Just be patient (that is what I keep telling myself).

Today I gained weight for the second time since I had the gastric sleeve surgery three weeks ago. I was 700 grams heavier today than I was yesterday, or 1,5 pounds. Last time this happened was a week after the procedure, when I gained 400 grams one day (a little under a pound) and then the day after I weighed the same as I did two days before. I weigh myself every day, and have done for a long time. I realise that weight fluctuations can happen, but I'm still a little shaken that they can happen when I'm only eating a few hundred calories per day. Yesterday, I ate around 800 calories, which is about the highest I've gone. Usually, I'm around 4-500 and not really hitting my protein target. I am hitting my water targets, so I'm not dehydrated. According to the UCLA Center for human nutrition, most people need at least 1200 calories per day just to survive, and eating less than 1000 is essentially starvation. So how can I gain weight on what is essentially a starvation diet? I'm not working out a lot, but I walk to and from work every day..

where did you loose weight first?
LookingForward22 replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I lost about 50 prior to my liquid diet and another 10 on that. I noticed in how my cloth fit, especially my waist band (big gaps). And then how shirts fit (arms and shoulders). I lost another 23 the first week post surgery and see it in my face. But I noticed this week my bra cups have more room… so it seems to be coming off all over. -
I was in my second week (today is day 1 of week 3) and I’m seemingly in a stall. I had been loosing up to my liquid diet (small amounts). Lost about 10 (despite starting my period the night before surgery) in the pre-op liquid diet. Then I lost 23 pounds my first week. Once I started purées I found it harder to make protein/calorie/water goals and I hit a stall. So I’m hoping that I can get out of that stall soon. I hear the first month is the biggest loss and the first 3 months are when you see your most progress so hopefully I will get back on track soon.

I just had my surgery on 8/17... First week I lost 10 lbs. after losing 22 in the month pre-op. But now I am stuck, I feel like it might be due to My period coming this week... But it is annoying and frustrating.

hello there! I am 6 weeks out, and have lost about 18 lbs. I lost 7 lbs the first week, then nothing for 3 weeks. I just continued on the plan, although felt very frustrated. And now i'm losing about a pound every day or two. I'm sure you'll get there too!! Keep on the good path!

Yeah, I got an ulcer after I stopped the first five months of Pantoprazole that was prescribed to keep my pre-existing GERD under control while I healed. It took only about 2 weeks for the ulcer to develop, and it really sucked. Pain just under the ribcage. My surgeon put me straight back on Pantoprazole and it went away very quickly. I'm still on the drug even now, with a view to get off it in a couple of months. You have my sympathies! It's no fun. But it's thankfully a quick and easy fix.

September surgery buddies!!

I'm 5 days through week 1 of pre-op...it was a little rocky day 1 & 2 but not unbearable. I drank a ton of iced tea (I’ve always enjoyed unsweet so that was no big deal) to stave off any nasty caffeine headaches...however, the sugar/carb withdrawal headache blows pretty badly anyway! I even managed to eat out a couple of times with my family...sticking very closely to the amounts/ingredients suggested on my diet plan. As many have suggested for real life after WLS, having a protein bar and tea/water on me at all times was a lifesaver and helped keep me from making bad choices. I worked on not letting myself get hungry and I find that 5 days later, I’m actually hungry less...if that makes any sense?! Good luck all and especially those about to go to liquid pre-op!! -
Years ago they thought I had an ulcer. Sharp cutting pains that used to run across my lower abdomen. I did the breath test for the helicopter pylori which is the bacteria behind most ulcers & an endoscopy. What they discovered was I over produced acid which also caused a lot of my reflux symptoms. PPIs do reduce acid production & while pre surgery I took one as necessary (about 5 or so times a year) I now take one every day. As the PPI is helping you I’d think it’s more likely to be excess acid too. It’s not uncommon for our acid production to increase after surgery but also because we’re still producing the same amount into a much smaller tummy. Hence why we’re usually prescribed PPIs for a while after surgery until it settles. Yes, the pain is worse when your tummy is empty because there is no food to absorb the acid. Pre surgery, the quickest & easiest way to stop the pain was to eat some carbs. Of course that’s not an option any more but it’s usually pretty much under control now because I eat quite often through out the day. I had a bad experience a couple of weeks ago though. Due to a number of events out of my control which ended in sitting in Emergency with my mother, I had only eaten breakfast & a mid morning snack. By 7pm I was in quite a bit of pain which wasn’t alleviated until almost 10pm when I got home & could eat. The next day my poop was very loose & acidic (burning & smell). Also I don’t have a gall bladder now which used to regulate the acid entering the digestive system so now it just drips in all day long. When your surgeon finally rings you back, ask for a breath test & an endoscopy (or may be your GP can arrange a breath test in the US 🤷🏻♀️) just to be sure you haven’t an ulcer nor any pockets of inflammation from the excess acid. All the best.

I think I have an ulcer. I've had pain midway between my belly button and sternum (i think that's what it called) or breastbone. Whatever. Pain is worse when my pouch is empty and goes away for a bit after I eat and I have called the surgeon's office 3 times, its always she will call you back. Yeaaaa At this point they can kiss it where the sun don't shine. I left a message to my primary to see what she can do to help me out. I started taking Omeprazole (OTC) to help and low and behold no more pain or rumbling tummy. So symptoms are managed. Only thing I noticed is the weight loss has increased. I usually lose up to 3 lbs per week and it's about 1 lbs a day so that's a bit concerning. Not complaining but just a tad concerned. Anyone have an ulcer? How long did it take to heal?

So the other day I was not having a good day. I just was super tired. I’ve been struggling to meet my goals - I think I’m in a stall and I was just feeling not great. There were ice cream and cookies in the house due to leftovers from a fantasy football coming home. I really wanted just a bit - but I knew that I shouldn’t. My husband - very sweetly said “I love you and I don’t want you to do anything to derail your progress… if you need me to, I’ll get rid of them”. (He asked me if he should bring them home and I said yea because the kids had friends over - so I knew they would eat them. I know that was hard for him (he never wants to tell me no about anything.) - but that kinda snapped me out of my head hunger and I’ve haven’t had any issue being around the snacks since. It felt good to know I have his support and he will help me when I need it. And it’s awesome to know that I can can resist temptation and make good choices when I am faced with temptation - not because I “have to” but because I want to. -
Questions to Ask Before Surgery?
NovaLuna replied to SpartanMaker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Literally the only thing that I wish they would have told me is that there is a 3% chance that you can develop a wheat allergy or celiac disease with any surgery that has malabsorption. I developed a wheat allergy and it completely blindsided me. I have crappy luck so had I known I would have expected it. Still would have done the surgery, but I would have expected it (not joking about the crappy luck. I had an MVD in 2017 and there is only a 1% chance of getting meningitis and guess what? I got meningitis. Yeah, my luck is crap). Also the hilarity of me having to call the bariatric surgeon because I was having chronic constipation and their confusion because they'd never had a patient with my surgery have that issue as it's generally the opposite (diarrhea) made my day. I laughed so much when the doctor had trouble processing that (I absorb iron really, really, really well so the fact that I was taking 3 iron multi's is what caused that issue. I now take 1 iron multi and 2 non-iron multi's and my iron level is the high side of normal... yeah). Also, keep in mind that everyone loses at their own pace and try not to compare yourself to others. You'll get there. It may be slower than someone else that started at the same time, but you could actually lose more than them in the end. You could also be a chronic staller (that was me. I've never met anyone who stalled as much as me) and that is incredibly frustrating (oh, the stress and frustration!), but it happens. And yes, even if you're not a chronic staller, stalls DO happen and are 100% normal (generally can last up to 3 weeks. Though some can last longer as I had a few that lasted in the 40 day range. No joke.). -
Will cravings for sweets and carbs stop
NovaLuna replied to Giovanna628's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It gets easier the longer you go without them, but once you re-introduce them you have to learn moderation even when you crave them. That has been a learning experience. I'm a stress baker and so when I bake I will call my sister up and give her more than half of what I bake so that I don't eat them all because I don't trust myself not to. I've even had my mom take some of my baked goods to work to share with her co-worker to get them out of the house. I have worked on the stress baking lately and I've cut it down to once a week when before I was baking 3-4x a week and sometimes sending all but one serving to my sisters house or my moms work lol. I made peanut butter cookies last week (because my niece and nephew were coming over and they love my cookies) and am planning banana muffins this week (because my mom loves when I make banana bread or banana muffins and since they eat the majority I tend to make what they like). -
I had my post op visit today to have my staples removed (really glad to see them go!). I’m down 20 pounds since my pre op visit two weeks ago, and 63 pounds overall. No real problems except a persistent pain in my back because I haven’t been able to sleep on my side yet. Getting my water and protein in and feeling great!

Now I'm worried about going to my 1-month appointment! I get close to 7K steps just at my normal work day...I didn't know that we were supposed to be taking things even easier than that. Last week was my first week back at work and I was exhausted. I've had to do the laxative thing twice already because if I hadn't, I wouldn't have moved my bowels since before surgery. It was getting really, really dire. I was very close to going to the doctor about it. But, the laxatives worked. I'm hoping that adding more fiber will help as I add more foods into my diet. I don't want to be dependent on laxatives for the rest of my life. They have had me on miralax in the AM and stool softeners since I came home and even that hasn't been working well.

Hi All, I had surgery 10 months ago and hit my 18 month goal at 6 months. However, since then I fluctuate 2+/- lbs for the last 4 months. I have lost 2 pants sizes, about 6 inches from my waist, and gained about 3 inches on my hips. I can’t get past 140/142 lbs on the scale. I have increased my protein, watched my carb intake, increased my exercise and still haven’t dropped past 140 lbs. has any had this happen? My dietician still hasn’t responded after multiple attempts of outreach.

Hello! I just had VSG surgery on July 11th, so I guess that makes me 7 weeks post-op! I'm currently in the "Mashed Food" phase until September 12th when I can start "Easy to Chew Foods". I like that mashed food is a bit more like real food than liquid or pureed, but it still feels really limiting. I don't mind eating small portions, but everything I eat basically has to be refrigerated and I can't wait to get to a phase, maybe? where I can eat some convenience foods, aka throw something in my purse in case I get hungry or I need to eat and a restaurant doesn't have what I need. Anyway, you can see most of my details in my profile, but I can't fill out some of it, which is weird. I'm not pre-op obviously. Oh I know...I lost 30 lbs prepping for surgery by walking, eating smaller portions and practicing the 30 minute waiting and such, oh and more water and no diet soda. Since my surgery I've lost another 35 in the last 7 weeks, I'd say that's not bad! My most recent bariatric nurse appointment was positive and she said that I'm ahead of the curve. I think I'm losing weight faster because I'm absolutely horrified by vomiting and I may hold back a bit because I don't want to get sick. My local friends that have had WLS said if I've gotten this far without vomit, I've probably done a good job following the rules and its not going to happen to me. I do once in awhile get the pressure in my chest, but then I either don't eat that thing again for a few more weeks or I eat a portion of less than 1/4c. Has anybody come up with any "life saving" types of recipes or convenience foods that they like???

That sounds scary. I'm glad you're all right. I've been a bit lax with my heartburn medication, because I haven't had any heartburn after the first week. I'm going to try to remember taking it every day from now on. I'm winded whenever I walk still, but I bought a bra this week and I'm down a band size. That's something. I also started tackling the box of books that was left over when I changed my bookshelves this summer, and I took a whole bag to recycling. So I've started back on projects I didn't complete because of my surgery. That feels good.

NEED HELP .... Vitamins and SEVERE GI Distress!
jojolynn73 replied to jojolynn73's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do have some appointments coming up.. It is just so distressing. I've had to step down from teaching due to my ongoing health issues. I am only 49. I am single and only have my income and health insurance. I have a few doctor appointments this week and then another endoscopic ultrasound and biopsy in September. Instead of getting better after my bypass, I am getting worse. I am just tired.. -
ISO Appeal letter example
ShoppGirl replied to lolarose13's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Wow. That just sounds insane. Your probably gonna cost them more money than the surgery costs by ending up in the ER every night of that week seeking help to deal with the unmedicated GERD just to take their stupid test!! Not that they can necessarily even help you without those meds?? I really hope your appeal is approved. -
I feel like they tend to drop the ball with the short-term aftercare information. I had no idea about the heartburn meds and never took mine either until my 3-week post-op apt My doctor encouraged me to keep taking them for the same reasons. So glad ur doing good and congrats on your loss! Non-scale victories... I feel like I have so much more energy than before. Any lower back pain I had before is totally gone. No more shin splints or fasciitis pains. I can def. tell my clothing is fitting loser and people are starting to notice the loss. I'm starting to gain my confidence back up as well.
