  1. My one year surgiversary for my sleeve is 9/13. I am thrilled with it! My surgery was uneventful as well as my recovery. I was self pay and chose to go to Dr Hargroder in Baton Rouge, LA. The cost then was 11,900 and that included everything. I considered Mexico but my husband was more comfortable with my staying in the states and Dr H was a 6 hr drive from home. If it had just been me, I probably would have gone to Mexico to either Dr A or Dr H, they both have lots of happy patients over on obesityhelp. As for why I chose the vsg, I didn't like the rerouting aspect of the DS or the RNY. I didn't like the foreign body aspect of the band. I heard too many people having to have revisions due to slippage, erosions, etc. I also didn't want the maintenance of fills and unfills. With my vsg it was one surgery and no maintenance, that's my kind of surgery. With any surgery there are risks of complications so you have to take that into condiseration as well. There was also a recent study about all wls and it said that the bigger, higher rated hospitals have smaller complication rates. If you want specifics, I posted about it a week or so ago on my blog and there's a link to the article included. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  2. What kind of options are there if insurance won't approve a band to sleeve revision? Like where can I go where it is inexpensive to self pay?
  3. 3 months ago this was a random thought, revision surgery! Best thought I ever had, I’m ready for 7:45 6/12...I’ve ordered the vitamin patches, tomorrow will stock up on protein beverages, have gained so much insight from others on this forum and the Facebook page...working tomorrow till 3am then to the hospital at 5:45. I’ve lost weight since the process started, took pics and measurements today, I’m fired up and ready to go! If I have any surgery twins let’s keep in touch and inspire and motivate each other!

    No Sleeve For Me

I have made two appeals to the review board in this six week period. did your insurance state only one "type" of weight loss procedure in a lifetime? doc and I presented medical issues with the band and the leakage problem. They agreed to revise, but only to band. What on earth did you put into a 57 page appeal?
  5. Hi, I'd love to see what we have in common surgery-wise as well as apart from surgery. (I'm being sleeved in March 2015, a revision surgery from the band that was placed in March 2011.) When I'm sufficiently recovered, I would welcome the opportunity to meet up in the borough. Let's go for a walk, a light-bite, or a cup of coffee and discuss our surgeries and more!
  6. I'm a potential lap band revision and I am scared to death that the sleeve will not work for me. My BMI is 32. It was a little higher when i had my band installed less than a year ago. I have only lost about 20 lbs with the band and I am constantly hungry, constantly getting food stuck and spitting up, etc, etc. Now I am experience acidic stuff coming up when I PB / Spit up. Gross! But I'm scared to take the plunge and have another surgery. And even more afraid that if I do take the plunge, that I won't lose anything. boo!

    Will this work for me?

If you believe it will be the solution, it can be. I was bashed heavily when my failed me. What you need to accept is that the band is just crap. Honestly, I fought to make mine work because I didn't want to fail. BUT, I really sat back and thought "what has this damn thing done for me lately?" It caused me to be in severe pain daily, the food restrictions were numerous, I'd puke on Water some days, so it definitely wasn't "my" fault that it had to come out. Just have faith in yourself, and the sleeve. Seriously, I dropped all but 7lbs with the sleeve alone. AND, I did it in less than a year. So, if I can do it so can you. Get the band out before you end up with permanent damage like I did in 8 short months. I know people that wait and wait and then wait some more hoping it resolve on it's own, but sadly the numbers don't lie. We just happen to fall into that 1 in 4 bandsters will have to revise. You're not a failure, and you won't be with the sleeve.

Band to Sleeve, St. Marys Question???

I called when I was having troubles awhile ago and asked about the Gastric Sleeve and they said they do cover it, as far as revision not sure! Yes they covered my band, twice actually. I had problems one month out my first lap band, and they covered putting it back in 6 months later, the sleeve was not even an option at that point. I am just anxious, the surgeon says he is going to try and rush things along, but the insurance lady that submits everything, says it will be atleast a couple of days because she just got back from vacation.

    REVISIONS

May I ask what a revision is?
  12. I got my band in 2006 and lost well over 100 pounds. My plan was, if the band didn't work for me, I would revise to the RNY. Now I have gained some of the weight back due to (unrelated health issues) an over fill, dilated pouch etc. When I decided on the band back then, it was purely financial, I was self-pay and had it done in Mexico. Had I been able to, I probably would have opted for the RNY because my BMI was over 60, however I was not willing to have that done in Mexico and the cost in the US was too high. Now I also am considering revising to the sleeve if I can't get my band to keep working for me. It is a tool and you do have to change your lifestyle period. Even with the RNY and the Sleeve they all involve a long-term commitment to changing your lifestyle or they won't work for you either.

    T Minus 6 Hrs

I am scheduled for a band to sleeve revision aug 28th. I feel secure about this decision in the daytime but at night I find myself waking up with fear. Is this normal?

    GERD

I am going to have an RnY September 5th. I am currently on Dexilant 60 mg for GERD, gastritis and keep Hector, my teeny tiny gastric ulcer sound asleep. However I am not an revision but a virgin Bypass. Still want to be friends?
  15. I typically have 2 shots of espresso with my premier shake over ice for the past 3 years had a revision and wondering if anyone has had a bad side effect with trying a shot of espresso with their premier shake. Just wondering just had my revision 8/3 doing really good but already missing it the protein shake is to thick without it thank you
  16. I don't want to scare you but your symptoms sound very similar to the ones I had and it turned out to be a slip. I wasn't losing weight because I could eat more, yet at night I'd have night coughs and I'd never digest anything...it didn't make sense so I went in and sure enough I had to get a revision surgery. Good luck.

    REVISIONS

A revision could be a Few things; it could be having a second WLS years after your initial procedure because you’ve gained weight back years later, it could be fixing a problem with a recent procedure or simply having another procedure because the previous did not meet your needs/ reason for the surgery in the first place.
  18. I refused the pain meds post op. Didn't want the nausea that it caused when I had my band surgery. Now with the revision - it's much easier getting my liquids in and the pain is bearable.
  19. The reality is that many (if not most) surgeons are "technicians"....they do what they do, often very, very well, but it is somewhat limited in scope. Unfortunately, the Band is a "dynamic" device..... the way your body interacts with it changes, and it works differently for different people. It's not like Gall Bladder Surgery or some other kind of surgery where you cut/suture/go have lunch. Placement is SO important, and people's bodies are all different. Therefore, there is a new "breed" of bariatric surgeon that has been emerging, surgeons who become much more involved in the entire process than they would be for other surgeries. They learn about nutrition, they learn more about obesity and its causes, they insert themselves deeper into everything. But....Most surgeons are not like that. And as you put it, Elfie, many of these guys do NOT keep up with things that they really SHOULD know more about. DO get a second opinion....see a Neurologist, because THAT is the world they live in.....Nerves and the "electrical" functions of the Body. Whatever you decide, you have certainly done well with the band....and I think you should look a little further before you have it removed or revise. S.
  20. How is everyone doing after revision? I have been banded for almost 14 years and revising next month. Was wondering how long before you went to work if you don't mind sharing. I am planning on taking 3 weeks off. I have a sedentary job. I also have a 3 night cruise booked for 5 weeks after. Think I will be ok? Many thanks!
  21. I was back at work one week after surgery, because I don't do a job that required any strenuous work. I worked short days first two days back. I am back to normal completely and waiting for doc to give me permission to go back to my weightlifting soon. I had a harder time with band then with my revision !

    Anyone here from Texas?

I'm doing a revision with Dr Kim in June. I've heard differing opinions about his bedside manner but never one bad thing about his skills as a surgeon. I know he will come check on me after surgery but I don't expect him to stay there and hold my hand kwim? I'm having mine at Baylor Trophy Club and I've read/heard nothing but good things about the hospital. Before deciding on Dr Kim I met with other docs but chose him because he has done a ton of revisions.

    Anyone here from Texas?

Thanks Leann. That is what I keep on hearing about Dr. Kim. I am wondering if I should go with another doctor but he is great with revisions.
