My weight loss has stalled. Not loosing but not gaining either. I upped my workout and I'm even hungrier now.

I'm 4 yrs out and the weightloss has been super slow but I now weigh 150. It's almost impossible to lose that last 15 lbs. Ive lost and gained the same 5 lbs for months. Everyone I know in my Facebook WLS board seems to think that maybe 150 is my good spot and my body is rebelling againt more loss. On July 19th I'm having a RNY revision. I've had 4 years of severe reflux with my sleeve. Hoping my post op diet and new tool, I may be able to get to goal. Hope so! My before (160) and after (150). If I lose more on my legs, I won't be able to hold the top part up. I look like a marshmallow held up with 2 toothpicks!

New/making decision about doing surgery
Marlu77 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there, I'm new to this forum. I have at this point made the decision to have the surgery done and pending cardiology check and insurance approval. I had never considered I would qualify but my surgeon suggested it in making plans to take my gallbladder out. I considered it a gift when he said I do qualify. I also have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and arthritis. My only worry is that my gallbladder will hold out AND there won't be any fluid from the gallbladder when it's removed or they won't be able to put the lapband in. I'm in total confusion as to what to eat right now - proper foods for diabetes, proper foods for the gallbladder, proper foods for weight loss and to get me ready and practiced eating for after surgery. But, I'm hanging in there. I like this forum so far and looking forward to reading more things. -
Greetings, I am a newbie to the board & am in the process of recovery:girl_hug: from my lapbad removal:thumbdown: on 9.17. Year 1: 6 fills; 3 unfills; weight fluctuation range: 247-198 weight loss: 49 pounds; weight gain: 30 pounds Year 2: 4 fills; 3 unfills; 2 deflates; 1 band removal weight fluctuation range: 217-201 Max. weight loss: 16 pounds; Max. weight gain: 9pounds I have followed up with my insurance to ensure coverage--confirmed--and I have followed up with my PCP to ensure protocol--letter from referral doctor of medical necessity. I have followed up with my referral doctor/wls surgeon to advise that my PCP needs a letter of medical necessity to submit for approval for authorization. I am schedule for my one month post op follow up visit with my wls surgeon on 10.31. I have confirmed the co-pay for wls in-patient is $250/outpatient is $150. I was selfpay $8500 plus travel for my lapband--Dr. Ortiz--Obesity Control Center in Tijuana, Mexico in November 2006. So the opportunity to get this wls covered by insurance is FANTASTIC! I can say that my insurance/PCP have been great b/c they covered all but 2 of my fills--and that was before I realized that I could petition for coverage. :huh2: I am hopeful/prayerful that there are not too many hoops to jump through and that the best case scenario renders that I can anticipate my wls to occur near the end of Thanksgiving--yes this year--like in a bit more than 30 days! I am wrapping up my last semester of coursework on my doctorate degree in higher education leadership and am working on chapters 1-3 for proposal defense & have comp exams coming up in 3 weeks...atop of returning to work on Monday.....so I already have a lot of hoop action already going on!:tt2: Wish me well!:cool2: Sheena

You need to celebrate any loss and not focus on any percieved negatives. We all have our ups and downs, but the important thing is to recognize the changes that need to be made and move on. Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it. If you believe in yourself, anything is possible!!!

My surgeon has a swimmer's build. I wouldn't trust a fat doctor no less a weight loss surgeon. Maybe it's a personal failing of mine, but I feel like people need to look the part. Mine was Dr. Menish Parikh in Bellevue Hospital in NYC--I haven't seen anyone else on here who went to him.

I stopped having regular menstrual cycles at around the age of 15. Since then I would get my period maybe 3-4 times a year and it would last about a day or so. Over time it slowed down more and more up until I would last years without a period. (I had an IUD put in last year and before that my last period was almost 2 years past) After surgery (now 6 weeks post op) I've been spotting on and off. I wonder if it's because of the hormones and changes in the way my body now balances things or is it just due to the weight loss??

I'm sure this is going to be typical but I need some reassurance. I had my sleeve on 4/14/14 and so far I'm down 11lbs from surgery. My thing is, the last 7 days I have only lost a pound. It's really hard to see the scale not moving so soon after surgery. I've struggled with my Protein and liquids but that's getting better. I guess I just expected to see more of a loss in 7 days. So what has your experience been? Is this typical? Is it just my body trying to figure it all out?

Hang in there, Fefe, we do all go through hard times and retraining our brains not to turn to food as a comfort is the most difficult part of this journey (IMHO). I had a job scare earlier this year and went through a VERY tough time at work....would cry every weekend over it. But I still lost weight. I think part of the reason was that what I ate was the one thing I had 100% complete control over...so I used that to make good choices. I would recommend a couple of things. Start off by being diligent to the exercise program that your personal trainer created for you. I started an exercise program right around the time my work stuff was getting uncomfortable and it was such a blessing. I started feeling better almost immediately and my workout became the only time I wasn't in a constant state of worry over my job, mostly because it was so hard that I couldn't think of anything other than getting through the workout. Plus, it's a great mood booster....I would walk out of the gym feeling great, exhausted, but great. I was only taking 2x a week classes so I didn't feel the pressure to exercise every day but I also had no excuse not to make it to class. Unless I was out of town for work....I was in class. My trainer even called me out for being consistent and seeing my progress as a direct result of that. After you get your exercise routine dialed in for awhile, then I'd concentrate on the food. I found it too overwhelming to do both at once but I also found that once I started exercising, I wanted to improve my stamina and endurance. I wanted to perform better at the gym and changing my diet was a way to do that. So my motivation became more than just "lose weight", it became "improve performance" and "feel better during my workout". I also found a new plan to follow. I know that many of us got the lapband to stop "dieting". But for me, I found out that some hard and fast food rules helps me to get back on track after I've strayed much easier than just promising to myself that I'll stay away from x,y,z. So I started a "carb cycling" diet which many bodybuilders use for quick fat loss. My plan wasn't to eat like that forever, I just did it for 30-60 days to get myself back on track. And it worked...I immediately kickstarted my weight loss in a big way. You can Google "carb-cycling" if you want to learn more about it or you can find a plan that you think will work for you. But having guidelines and following them strictly can be so helpful. Now I'm on a different plan....one that is more livable for me but still getting great results. For the first time since getting my lapband 3 years ago, I see a clear path to getting to my goal weight and I'm so excited by that. It gives me the motivation to keep going every day. Stick to it and you'll be losing more than 1 pound/month soon!

My Company uses UHC, AETNA, and some smaller health care providers. They all have weight loss surgery in their packages. Aetna, however has the 3-6 month diet regimen. Luckily for me my provider is UHC. Which poses my next question. My surgery inpatient/outpatient coverage is 90% covered by uhc after deductible ($100) is met. Can anyone share from their experiences what the 10% cost to me will be? Will I have to pay up front or will my insurance company bill me? I am going through Lap-Band Solutions in Dallas so any advice you can offer definitely will help. I'll probably know for sure after my consultation but knowing a rough estimate sooner would be wonderful. Thanks

I asked this very question and my crew said 'we have never stopped a surgery because of someones liver'.. So i guess, you're good... As for the hair loss.. this is a tough one. Some people have it.. Some people don't. Its all about your protein levels and sometimes the shock of the surgery. Unfortunately, you just can't tell - but you can help it by following your diet plan, taking a few supplements and hoping for the best. Good luck! x

Deciding if this is for me
cownancy replied to aloha51703's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The best thing to do is attend one or more informational seminars and some support groups. Please do not listen to anyone who has not actually had the surgery. The information coming from friends and relatives are usually filled with misleading and incorrect information. The lapband is something that can be adjusted if you find eating is difficult or if, after a period of time, you are suddenly hungry again. If you have problems with "getting sick", which is an exaggeration of getting food "stuck" so that it doesn't pass through the band, then it's probably the type of food you are eating, your speed of eating or a lack of chewing. What I am trying to say is that you cannot compare the side effects of the band with gastric bypass. My doctor is famous for saying that you can choose the bypass and he does all the work and, at first, you don't have to work as hard, or you can choose the band, which is hardly any work for him, but lots of work for you. The band simply keeps the food in a location where it activates the nerves that tell your brain you aren't hungry anymore. If you eat liquid calories like shakes, ice cream, Soups, etc. and/or you are not willing to work on learning to recognize/retrain your hunger cues, then this isn't the surgery for you. But, a visit with the surgeon is the best way to find out. The surgeon should ask you questions to help you determine if you are a good candidate for this surgery! I love my band, but I do work hard. However, I feel supported by my doctors and support group and feel like my weight loss WILL be successful and long lasting this time. Good luck....remember...ONLY listen to patients and then, ONLY after you learn about the procedure so that you know if people who are displeased have followed the program because you have to attend support groups and see the doctor regularly in order to have long lasting success. -

i guess i am an old time. most people have to do the weight loss and exercise journal for 6 months . consider yourself lucky. any thing you want to know please ask. i lost 89 lbs 2 years ago. -
Just got word last Friday from Aetna that they declined the procedure, and that my Doctor has already made an appeal as of last week when he was informed. The reason was lack of documentation regarding 6 month doctor monitored diet plan. I consulted with Dr Gonzalez staff and they informed me that they request a p2p meeting with Dr Gonzalez to justify the medical need for the procedure. I have to say I felt destroyed all weekend. I began I diet plan in the mean time to help with my total weight loss. Any one go through the same issue?

Thank you guys so much for the tips. I will try the ricotta/sauce thing.. in fact I have those ingredients here. I will try the tuna now too.. hopefully I'll be ready for that. I WISH I liked cottage cheese. I absolutely hate it. My Protein powder is unjury, but I didn't know if there was another brand that has more protein per scoop? 27g is pretty good. Unjury is 20g. Cheri... what brand do you use, and how is the taste? I even froze milk into ice cubes, so I can get the added protein from milk ice cubes, instead of regular Water ice cubes. My goal is 60g per day. Is that a good goal? How about you guys? If I try for 50g, do you think it would matter? lol.... I am terrified of my hair falling out!!!

Has anyone ever had their metobalism tested?
greyhoundmom replied to LeslieR041906's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi, i had the breathing test a while back and my metabolism was 20% less effective than it should be. i have also had testing for insulin resistance - which i recommend for anyone having trouble losing weight! it's a glucose tolerance test (3-4 hours) where they also measure insulin levels each time they measure glucose. my dr. didn't know about this (neither did the lab techs but they did it) but my nutritionist recommended it and i have high insulin resistance - which makes you gain fat from foods that are normally used for energy and makes it hard to lose fat. the good news on that is i've read that weight loss surgery (lap-band included) can improve insulin resistance by up to 70%! which will make weight loss easier. do a google on it to find out more -it's not as well known as i think it should be but it's a real metabolic condition - your metabolism is broken if you have this. there are many theories as to how you get this (high carb diet, heredity, who knows). this can be called (or is part of) sydrome x or pre-diabetes sometimes too. -
The last time I saw OPRAH do a show on weight loss surgery it was ALL about bypass. She had that judge from American Idol on. She also spoke to Dr. Christine Ren from NYU but there was no mention of the band and Dr. Ren does both surgeries. The thing I don't like about the shows is that weight loss surgery is always persieved as taking the easy way out. It drives me nuts. Even Dr. Phil has taken that attitude (I guess because he is trying to sell his fitness book).

I finally called and made my first appointment with Dr. Singh. I attended his seminar late last summer, and I finally made the call. I kept thinking when it would be the right time, since the Dr. said its important to go through with the surgery when you don't have a lot of stress in your life. Probably and impossible thing, but I've made some changes to get rid of the stresses that I can. I'm totally nervous to go through with this. It's those little things....the "what if"s. That and I really hate throwing up, so I hope that I don't have that much of a problem post-op. My appointment is March 31, 2010. I want to loose at least 100 lbs. with this surgery. Hopefully the loss will help me gain my confidence and start to live again!

Well my pcp had lots of reports of my past visits saying i was trying something lol from weight loss clinics, to personal trainers, etc. Every single page of my medical records she mentioned about my failed attempts lol it was even sad to see the word "obese" in all of then So, that may have worked, plus my 1 year record with weight watchers...
