  1. I agree with Reverie you should not do ab exercises for at least 6 weeks. You can't spot reduce fat. You can only add muscle. Instead I would start a gradual cardio program.
  2. I just wanted to share this in case this happened to anyone else or maybe I could help someone else. I had my band put in on 7/6/09 and I had no complications. I lost 40lbs. in about two or three months and everything seemed to be fine. I then noticed that I wasn't feeling restriction and so I would get my fills and I would feel restriction a week or so afterward but then I'd have virtually no restriction so I would get another fill. I kept doing this and talking to my doctor and getting more fills. I never had any problems like vomiting or productive burping and I could eat a normal size meal like I did prior to the surgery. I was very frustrated. My doctor didn't know why this was happening and decided to fill my band while sitting up and sipping cold Water and he filled it up until I said that the water wouldn't go down anymore and let out just a little. I have 7cc in my band now which i think is an 8cc band and he said that he's never put this much in a band but to call if any problems. I didn't have any problems and the same thing happened: It worked for about a week and then it was if I had no band. I tried to eat the small portions and very healthy and I did exercise but mostly cardio, no resistance training at the time. I gained 20lbs back though. I kind of just gave up on the band helping me much especially since I don't have insurance anymore. My husband and I started an exercise program that includes a lot of abdominal and core exercises and we've been doing this for over a month and now I have great restriction. I get very full on about 1/2 cup or a cup of food and I have to be very careful about how fast I eat or I will vomit. It's as if I just got the band a month ago because this is what was supposed to have happened earlier. My husband thinks it may be because my core/ab muscles are pushing in towards my stomach now. I'm not sure but I'm so glad it's finally working. I felt stupid for doing the surgery before this.

    back to work Monday

I hear you. I was banded on 3/10 and I went back to work last thursday. My first day back was one of the longest days I have had there. I was just tired and wanted to go home. I recommend taking it slow. My boss know about the band and I worked out a little arrangement with her. I broke my lunch up into two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. If your boss knows about your surgery ask him/her about taking an extra break here and there or seeing if they can manipulate your lunch time too. Keeping up on fluids is important so hopefully your boss will be on board.

    Great read!

Check out this great little book. About a three hour read and very supportive and informative "Beyond the Refrigerator : navigating life after weight-loss surgery". By Linda Ouellette , LPC ISBN # 978-1-4575-0836-3.
  7. You have to build up to the Protein and Water levels. Do the best you can. In the hospital they gave me these little medicine cups like the ones on the bottle of Nyquill. I took a bunch of those home and for the first week I'd sip from that. I think it helped me slow down. I never had the gurgling or the slimes (knock on wood)
  8. My friend and I went out for her birthday I bought a size 16 dress down from a size 28 when i started this journey! And i broke my stall and am down 100 Me before surgery

WOW YOUR STANDING STRAIGHT FOR 13 DAYS!!. I could not stand up straight for 8 weeks. I was barely walking at 14 days lol. Looks great.
  10. First off you don't want to push the issue of "feasting" . The idea of this surgery is to help him loose weight and not make him eat. After his surgery, it is really important to follow the doctors rules and regulations. I don't think you want to be the reason if he has a leak or other type of problem because you felt he should "enjoy" thanksgiving. It's not about the food, it's about family (new way of thinking now). As long as he is with his family that should be all that matters. If he is just starting on mushies that week, then mushies is what he'll have (the doctor will give him a plan to follow). But follow the doctors advise. . .that is most important for his health. However, again, the choice is yours. . . Good luck

    Struggling badly...

As I read your post I was wondering if in my sleep I had typed this and forgot. Most of what you said sounds just like me. I had my band on 08/05/08 and 4 weeks before surgery if it wasn't chicken and tuna and water I didn't eat it, I hit the scales 1 week after surgery and had lost 25 pounds. I know that was from the preop diet. I have lost a total of 39 now but i have only had one fill in and that was in Oct too and since then I just have not had the money to go get another one. I had my band done in Mexico and the nearest fill center is 6 hours away, the one that was 2 hrs away closed down. I'm depressed, I hate chicken now, I can't bare to touch tuna anymore, I'm now addicted to sweet tea when I barely touched it before, I have started drinking cokes again, with no pain, I eat whatever I want. I need something, I just found out that my medical insurance will pay for the surgery if I would have waited 6 months the $300 dollars a month I have to pay the bank for surgery loan is more than I can just about handle with everything else. On top of it all my stomach is always sore, I can't lean up against a desk anymore or reach over the desk to get anything because its too painful, I can't sleep on my stomach unless I get in a certain spot, and now just this week i feel like i have eaten way too much and its stuck in my throat. I get hungry I eat it goes down ok but the after feeling is like it hasn't gone down and it feels that way even after sleeping all night and just drinking water. I now know why some people dont tell when they have it done, because i'm so sick of everyone asking, how much have you lost? or gosh you dont look like your loosing? Truth is I haven't been on the scales since Jan and that's just because I'm too scared to, I'm afraid I have gained weight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hunger

I'll be honest with you. It felt greeeeate! I did clear liquids for over 3 days/2 nights, then some light Soups and by the 4th-5th day, I was feeling pretty good in terms of healing, recovery, etc. I was also hungry as hell. My first "solid" food was soft scrambled eggs (nothing added) and I think I ate just one! Sure I was scared but it went fine. I also heal quickly, IMO. The type of band that you have may also play a role but I think the worst that happens to the stomach is a small flap is folder over one side of the band and stitched kinda like "tucking it in" place.

    The Subject of Sleep

Most likely your body is still healing. My bariatric team doesn't consider the sleeve healed until week 12. Also, if you are getting in your Protein and Water, it is likely the fatigue may come from certain Vitamin deficiencies. I was checked at 12 weeks and was OK because I have been on Calcium, Vitamin D, a B-12 supplement, and 2 Multivitamins a day. Give that a shot, and get rest when you can. You deserve it!
  15. Hey all, I'm just about 10 weeks post-op and doing extremely well. A few of you have even gone out of your way to send me private notes of encouragement, kudos, and well-wishes. This means a lot to me, so thank you for that! I wanted to find out from you about your experiences with sleep post-surgery. I would say that before surgery I probably did have bouts of sleep apnea, though I never got tested for it or diagnosed with it. (Wife used to tell me I'd stop breathing in the middle of the night in between loud snoring, though...) Despite this, I was able to function pretty well on about 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night. Sometimes I'd even get 7 or 8 hours of sleep and be ok too. Now, post-operatively, I have found that it seems like I can never get enough sleep, and I have a real hard time getting out of bed in the morning. Any sign I had of the apnea went away shortly after surgery, so I know it isn't that. I have been getting 8 hours of sleep at a minimum and often find myself hitting the snooze button and even coming in to work late because I grab more sleep where I can. It's frustrating. Has this happened to anyone else? Does it ever change or return to normal? What causes this? Theories? Ideas? Suggestions? I hope all is well with you in your respective journeys, I'm humbled to be fighting the good fight alongside all of you and value your input. Cheers, ~Pat
  16. Newbie here started my journey on March 2013 with a angiogram doct thought I had a clogged artery. Said I was just BIG,"FAT"So referred me to weight loss program. 3 Days After Surgery

Yes, almost everybody experiences the same thing! My advice is never let your pain meds wear out, use a heating pad and most importantly WALK! Give yourself some time to heal and stay hydrated. I'm 2 weeks out and I'm perfectly normal now with zero pain. Best to you!

    How Much Water?

I would say that your water intake is based on you body, i am a larger guy so my doctor advised to get at least 100 oz a day. i was getting down around the recommended 60 oz but i had to go back to the hospital for dehydration 3 days after leaving the hospital. i would say get as much as you can. i dont think you can really get " to much" water"
  19. So a little over two weeks ago I had surgery. So as of today I have lost 26lbs!! Holy crow. It kinda doesn't feel like it. Nothing fits but this stinky inbetween stage has got me only being able to wear three skirts, tops that are to big( boobs are like gone) and as my husband says my people of WalMart yoga pants : ) But for all of this I am doing the happy dance!!
  20. This past Friday I had my third fill. My doc said this might be the last one. He had me drink Water while filling my band and the water felt like it was bubbling up into my esophagus. I was on liquids for 24 hours and then eased into food the next day, per my doc. Here's my issue, if I take too big of a bite or eat too fast I seem to feel it in my esophagus, but once I slowed down I am able to eat more than a cup. It's not that I can eat a lot, but it is more than I think I should at the "sweet spot". I have an appt with my doc next week to see if I am sufficiently "filled". While I don't feel like I have quite the "right" amount in my band (4.5 cc in a 10 cc band), I am afraid that if I get another fill the pain will be much worse in my esophagus when I eat. Am I confusing two different things or am I asking for problems if I get another fill? Help, please.

    Roller coasters?

My doctor told me at my 1 week appointment that I was fine to do activities as I felt comfortable. She specifically mentioned roller coasters. She did say no swimming though due to infection risk. I say DO IT and enjoy yourself!!!

    Severe stomach pain

I am nearly 4 weeks out and had the same experience last week when I ate 1 piece of Mongolian Beef. Was sick with severe pain and vomiting for almost 24 hours. Not sure if it was the sugar content in the sauce or the beef. Horrible experience that I believe was dumping. Not going to make that mistake again any time soon!

    Severe stomach pain

I am 15 weeks out, have been told to not eat beef for 6 months. I have difficulty with chicken and turkey. I suspect you will be very cautious from now on. I had a bad night when I ate small pieces of shrimp too fast. I am terrified of reliving that. I eat very cautiously. I am down 65 Ibs. Good luck.
  24. Just experienced my first horrible night. I am 10 weeks out. I ate one slice of rare beef, potatoes and a gravy sauce with pineapple and garlic in it. I started having some sharp cramping pains about 10 minutes later. I managed to rest and drive home. Later, I thought I was not going to make it through the night. Severe stabbing pain for 5-6 hours that came and went initially and then by 11pm to 2am became pretty intense. Vomiting was an issue. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced a similar situation? Is this because I ate such rich food? Is this a gallbladder issue? I am feeling pretty fragile today, can't really eat much just living on liquid diet today. I feel like I was beat up. Looking for some help explaining this. Thanks!
