Help! In Terrible Need of Positive Vibes

I went through an odd year, before I had my surgery on 10/28. I lost a lot of friends and when I started my journey, I realized that some of these people were very negative towards this idea. To my skinny, closest friend - me becoming thin was a threat to her. It was the one thing she could lord over me. I'm glad she doesn't know. To the others, who were average weight or heavy - going out to eat and their constant drinking - I wouldn't be a part of it anymore. In the end, I choose me and my health. I have a supportive husband and my son is on board (he was scared about the surgery, but I know he wants me to be healthy - even though he had one really negative comment recently). My coworkers have been amazing (most of them have; some have said some crappy things; some have had the surgery themselves). You have to do what's best for you. Nothing will change who you are, if you don't let it but yes, you'll change in some ways. Your confidence will grow and you will feel better about yourself. If someone equates that to you being "not nice" then that's their issues and, maybe, they're just not that nice. All the best to you!!

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Ok, so I failed to recognize that this month's challenge has a banned food list component to it! I totally had 7 of the the 10 items on that list yesterday. Ooopsies. I'm going to have to pass on that part of the challenge, i think! Day 6: What in nature are you most grateful for? OCEANS, and everything in it, and surrounding it ❤️

  5. Disclaimer: I'm not a Doctor but I watched a lot of ER and House, M.D. 😂 Why not walk less or at least to the point before you swell up and are in pain. E.G. RICE therapy: Rest (or reducing daily activities), Ice, Compression (as with bandage support) and Elevation. RICE is good initial therapy for many knee conditions. As far as I know the muscles surrounding the knee can be built through exercise so continued damage is avoided but you may need to see a physical therapist Weightloss may greatly improve the condition or oddly make it worse for a while. For some reason, anatomical/structural issues become more obvious with greater weightloss. I was told by my physical therapist once that it may be because compression and insulation from weight and fat are no longer factors. But according to the Arthritis Foundation "Every pound of excess weight exerts about 4 pounds of extra pressure on the knees. So a person who is 10 pounds overweight has 40 pounds of extra pressure on his knees; if a person is 100 pounds overweight, that is 400 pounds of extra pressure on his knees" Good Luck 💙
  6. Hello new friends! This is so exciting to feel such support and know that I'm not alone. I was just sleeved on 10/28 and have been having some issues - I was released on 10/31 and back in the hospital yesterday, 11/4. I feel like my body is completely shutting down. I had a really high heart rate when standing and walking and could not even brush my teeth without having to run to lay down. I have been getting my fluids (broth and water) but barely any protein because the shakes made me sick (I started on yogurt and liquid soups on Monday which has helped). They checked for blood clots and checked everything with my heart thinking that could be the cause of the shortness of breath, high heart rate and extreme fatigue. We concluded that my body is adjusting and my blood vessels have changed after surgery making it hard for me to retain electrolytes. My urine was clear though, so again Im not sure if I was dehydrated. Anyways, my blood pressure drops when I stand up and it's scaring me - the dr. said to drink more electrolytes, get more sodium, and wear compression socks. I'm hoping once I get on purees in a week that can help me get more nutrients in and more energy. Has anyone gone through this and have any tips? Any tips in general for helping the body to adjust? My body is in shock I think and trying to preserve energy for my big body while not eating enough food so maybe that's it.

    pain and walking

I’m 10+ months out and when I had surgery I was not anticipating being in so much pain (mostly because of what I’d heard from others) and I was completely blindsided from the extreme pain when I woke up. It took me a month to get back to work, and even then I built up my hours. I live in the Netherlands though so I *could* do that an still get my salary. In hindsight I’m really glad I took it slow. Even in the third week I was so weak and barely able to walk long distances.... good luck with your recovery.
  8. I got the gastric sleeve done on 7-31-19. So far I have lost 53 pounds but now I’m struggling with meal plans and portions sizes. If anyone had any tips for me it would be greatly appreciated!
  9. Hi everyone I was just approved for VSG. I’m waiting on a call back from my surgeon with the official surgery date. I am looking to have it done the second weeks of December. I am so nervous and scared and excited!!! I also keep second guessing myself and thinking if I’ll chicken out and just not do it. I really really really want this done because at this point there is nothing I have not tried to loose the weight. I am scared of failing I guess. I’ve lost almost 20lbs since I began my appts to get this done. I am on a daily injection to suppress my appetite which was a big contributor. If you are a fellow December surgery let’s lean on each other throughout our recovery!

Sleeve Veterans: What makes you successful long term?

Bringing back an old thread to ask people what macros they follow, if they log food? Also, several people said they stick to a diet similar to what was prescribed by their doctor...but mine didn't really prescribe anything at all other than 40-60 grams of protein a day. So I have gained 10 pounds back at 5 yrs out, and I'm unsure what to do to get back on track. I'm 5'1, 43 years old, a stay at home mom on my feet much of the day homeschooling, cleaning, etc as well as mowing the lawn with a manual reel mower twice a week, edging, etc once a week, etc. Still nursing my toddler, although she gets most of her calories from food. help?
  11. Starting to feel better. 9 days post op.. been home 48hrs so I'm sleeping much better Just felt like checking in today with my weekly weight loss. 75lbs down in the 10 weeks I've been dieting. highest weight 322. Current weight 247lbs! finally got under 250 looking forward to hitting my next goal of 200 currently on chewable Bariatric multivitamin got from the hospital before I left and got b12 under the tongue on special too! drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day and shakes & will try some soft puree starting at day 14 got myself some high protein yoghurt to try !! My stomach likes to rumble at random times of the day.. But overall I feel I'm going well with no major issues! My surgeon Is one of the best in the country he even trains other surgeons!! The private hospital he used was amazing I felt like a king being looked after 24/7!! 7 days in hospital All covered by insurance *I hope I can give others looking at having RNY some hope and confidence to see how well I'm doing!!* any questions appreciated take care MIKEY

    Well this is about Sex

Its definitely up 🤣. Now I am better than when I was 19 (I was horrible at 16). Prior to surgery I was having issues getting and staying erect. Now I can last longer and then orgasm and keep going. I have had my wife ask "Did I get you?". Never in my life has that been asked by her before. First time she said that I was all smiles.

    Changing Habits Prior to Surgery

I too am a band (2012) to bypasser (9/19), and the thing that I have been most amazed by is the need to fight the “head hunger”. I am not hungry like I used to be, so my head starts playing tricks on me, like hey you should really be eating something, don’t get too hungry. It is definitely a different lifestyle than being banded and at 6 weeks out still trying to figure it out, but good luck.

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Day 5: Had a great time watching my Cowboys win last night and did pretty good at the party except for a few homemade potato chips (I know) and trying some Deep Eddy orange vodka which is made right up the road from us in Austin. Had my therapy appt. this morning and getting ready for our walk. What item in my home and I most grateful for? Of course it would have to be our sweet miniature schnauzer Bella who just turned 10 on Friday. She is such a good girl and I love her very much. In terms of material possessions there are many I am grateful for but I am most grateful for all my favorite framed pictures I have in every room. Always makes me happy to look back on family, friends, vacations, etc. when I look at them. Conservatively, there are at least 40 of them. B-Side Question: Anyone/thing pushes your buttons too easily I have zero patience and get very irritated with bad/distracted driving and it is only getting worse. Such stupidity and lack of responsibility. We have lost several friends from our motorcycle community to stupid driving and it really pushes my buttons when we are on the bike and I see some idiot unable to maintain lane position or use signals because they are talking/texting. Grrrrr.... Plus since central Texas is such a hotspot for people to want to move here the traffic seems to get worse weekly. I know I need to chill out a bit about this.... My husband also gets on my last nerve sometimes due to general laziness and lack of motivation to do anything other than TV and YouTube. Yes, I know he is 67 and retired but dammit he needs to get off his a$$ and do something more productive. Our 35 year anniversary is next month assuming we make it until then😂🤣😂
  17. I told everyone! Makes life so much easier and you don't have to deal with any questions as to why you are losing weight or eating little or need to go to the hospital for complications, etc. Plus, I ended up inspiring some people to have the surgery. Like, there is no natural way I would have lost 158lbs in less than a year. It would have been stupid obvious anyways. Like "Oh yeah, Brenda. My low-carb diet and exercise helped me lose 150lbs in 10 months." In no reality ever.

    pain and walking

Oh hun i had my sleeve on the 22nd October and today has been a challenge i was ok up to day 12. Yesterday and today i have been in agony walking. It is all at my incision site on my left and in my left back too. You are not a wuss. I contacted my doctor and he stated its normal. I feel like i took 10 steps forward in recovery in 20 steps back again. Dont worry, just get your protein in as it helps alot in recovering internally. I am hoping that pain goes by week 3/4.

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

Greetings Everyone in the Funky JuneBunch, It has been a while. I've been wanting to give you all an update but life happens. My mom has been in and out of the hospital for the last 2 months. We thought we were going to lose her. But God is good. And she is still with us. I wanted to pop in and give an update on my status. Well for starters, as I weighed myself this morning, I am at 168lbs. I haven't seen the Onederlands since........It's been a minute. Let's just say 20+ years. To keep up the momentum, I walk on an average of 3-8 miles a day. As far as diet, I have slowly went back to all the foods I have eaten before surgery. However, I cannot eat much at a time. Which is a good thing. I still have difficulties with getting in my required water intake. For some strange reason I just can't get water down like I was able to before the surgery. But I am not complaining. The small things are so much better than the idea of being grotesquely overweight. I now, go up and down stairs with no problem or slightness of breath. And I have picked up a new addiction........wait for it.......Shopping. I've had to rethink my size and do a mental makeover. My walking buddy told me that I have to give up my "Plus size" thinking because I am no longer plus size. I've had to retool and buy a whole new wardrobe. I am no longer a size 22. But I am more like a size 12 and 14. No more 2X and 3X. Now it's more like Medium and maybe an occasional Large. And I am not even at the 6 months marker. My six months will be on December 3rd. is June 1st….. I will include a few photos to help illustrate my progress. Keeping The Faith, the Purpledva Below is a before/after photo The picture on the left was October 2018 and the right is October 2019 What difference a year makes. If I can do it, then you all can too.

    Dental Issues

I had the sleeve done in July of 2014 and the first 2 years were great. Lost 85lbs and kept it off, reflux was gone, diabetes gone, hbp gone. I went from 10-15 pills a day down to 2. After 2 years I started noticing reflux issues coming back and had to have my gall bladder removed. I have slowly started gaining some of the weight back and my craving for sugar is ridiculous...mainly my fault. In the process of trying to reset my pouch right now and trying to curb the sugar cravings by reducing my carbs. My main concern now is my dental health. For the last 2 years my teeth have been falling apart. They keep breaking, the cavities are ridiculous. I’ve had my bridge fall off only after being on for 4yrs due to decay underneath it. I’ve had a crown fall off due to decay. I’ve had 2 root canals and to date I’ve had to get 4 more crowns because my teeth keep breaking off. I’ve spent about $4,000 in dental work so far with insurance and I have about another $8,000 left to do. My dentist has recommended 2 implants because 2 of my teeth are so bad off. I could see if this were due to dental hygiene, but it’s not. I brush 2, sometimes 3 times a day, floss, use Sensodyne Intensive Enamel Repair and Enamel On(flouride toothpaste from dentist) every time I brush and I don’t rinse it off, I let it sit on my teeth, flouride rinse, and my teeth are regularly cleaned every 6 months by the dentist. I also take my multivitamin and my calcium vitamins(actually take 1 more than is needed) every day. My dentist says he has quite a few bariatric patients who are also experiencing a lot of dental issues. Has anyone had a lot of problems with their teeth and if so have you addressed it with your gastric surgeon? What are they saying about it? I was not told 5 years ago that this was even an issue.

Good morning everyone! This time tomorrow I will be coming out of surgery! I promise to give you lots of details tomorrow. I know I wait to read everyone's posts right out of surgery. Thanks @Unclechaz for your update. I'm on day 7 of the pre op liquid diet. Everyone said after day 3 it would get easier and I would have a strange mystical energy. That sounded a little nutty but it has been so true. I'm not even hungry at all. I'm really grateful, even if it was just to shrink my liver it has got me used to being ok without food. Oh, and I've lost 10 lbs! (I had bounced back up to 300 and I'm 290 this morning). I'm tied for super excited and freaking out. I have worked almost 11 months for this. I quit smoking after 30 years for this. I'm expecting the first week buyer's remorse. I'm prepared to sip and walk like it's my job. I hope everyone who went in this month so far is doing great and will give us happy updates soon! Prayers for us all for new beginnings!

So looking forward to next stage PUREE

I had my surgery 10/24 and am doing pretty well! I had the same thing with the bladder, but it seems to have evened itself out now, so hopefully it will for you too! I am on pureed foods already, but I've been having problems with my heart rate elevating, so I've been advised to stick mostly with fluids, which I have. It's been a pretty easy journey so far, but I've slowed down in weight loss now. It was fun watching the first 11 pounds just slide off though!

Good morning ladies. I had surgery on 10/30. So far so good just now getting over the pain. Not as bad as I thought. My biggest issue is I want to drink more water than my body will allow
  25. I'm so with you ChubRub. I told my manager and my close group of friends, maybe 10 people total. My immediate family and my wife. Work wife as well. But no one else at work needs to know.
