    Gaining Weight!

Are you getting in enough calories, Water, sleep and Vitamins?? Without enough calories your body will fight to keep you from losing and I have found I gain weight as well. The others also impact weight loss and weight gain. I tend to find that I gain and lose on a fairly regular basis, so do not worry too much, soon it will drop as long as you are doing all the things I listed including exercise often and enough Protein. You do not want your body going into starvation mode, that is not a good thing and makes things harder for you. At 2 weeks though calories is so much not a big issue, how about water intake? yes and your period can impact your weight, as well as your body is still recovering from surgery and will be fighting everything for a bit. Do not worry it will come off... look forward to a lot of this up and down thing, I have just come to accept it as part of the journey and try not to let it drive me crazy. Good luck

    Feeling Frustrated!

So I met with my surgeon last week and am feeling better. My patient coordinator eased my fear of any weight gain. She said that it doesn't mean that Aetna will reject me. They just don't want to see huge amounts of weight gained. The important thing is meeting with my doctor every month. I also found out that my MD's scales are WRONG and not correct. They finally listened to me when they weighed me and it said I lost 65 lbs in a month! lol So they are ordering new scales and I will be weighed there after.

    Living scale free

Yes I agree I don't have a scale I don't want to purchase one and it's simply because I've watched so many people get discouraged to the point they were in tears because of weight gain and they start to regret the surgery and it turns into a psychological thing and I don't want to deal with that and I've never been a person that looked at the scale so I don't have a problem with not having a scale Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Veterans with Bipolar

My guess is that it may be related to medications, as many of the mental health meds have weight gain or increased appetite as a side effect. There are some that are considered metabolically neutral-check in with your psychiatrist about that. On the other hand, 16 lbs above “normal” BMI is really not bad! Many, many bariatric patients never reach a “normal” BMI and their surgeon will tell them that going from obese to just over weight is a success. Congrats on all you’ve done so far!

    Feeling Guilty!

Certainly don't worry about what the surgeon will think. The chances of you doing something he/she hasn't seen before are very remote! Leading up to my surgery, I ate like is was my last meal for 3 months. I managed to gain 18 pounds in that time, and frankly I enjoyed the hell out of it. In the end, all the weight gain pre-surgery means is a few more weeks until I eventually hit my goal. I figured I spent 40 years getting to where I was, so what's an extra few weeks.

    Long time, no fill

Hello guys. Been a while since I have been on and almost as long since I've been hitting the weight loss road. I was banded back in Oct of 2007. Between the loss pre- and post op I lost around 85 pounds. Had 3 fills and was doing very well. Then all kinds of hell broke loose. In hospital with dehydration and stomach bug, blood clot, car wreck, job loss, father dying, house foreclosure. All in about a 6 month time frame. It sucked. I didn't want to go back in for a fill because the amount of stress along with my band gave me PLENTY of restriction. We ended up moving to a small town 2 hours from my doc. No fills anywhere near where I live. I've also been working two full time jobs (~100 hours/wk) for going on 18 months now. Unfortunately both jobs are fairly sedentary so I've managed to put back around 40 pounds. No problems with the the band during that time. So yes. I'm now backslid and un-filled since Feb of 08. I want to get started back now. I've gone back on liquids for the past week to shrink up any pouch expansion (pretty sure most of my weight gain was to eating around the band...I still have some restriction but have consistently chewed really well, but didn't obey the no-drinking rule). I'm embarrassed that I have let things go so long. I am hesitant to go back to my doc but I know I need to get restriction going again if I'm going to be successful. I dread going back. Do any of you have similar experiences? I'm not concerned about being successful--I know that with restriction I can be. Is there anything else I should be doing before going back to my doc? Thanks for listening. Wish me luck (and a few prayers if you have any to spare!) Ben

    The beginning

thanks for all your support. i so look forward to the journey. i spend so much time on this forum and looking at before and after photos. i have even dreamed of issues related to the sleeve. so my mind is thinking even when i am sleeping. regarding my baby's birth. i have had infertility issues for the past 13 years. not weight related but related to an autoimmune disease. in the end after years of trying every thing and having multiple miscarries we sought our a gestational carrier for our children. my daughter is now 5 1/2 months old and our new baby will be born the end of august. i am totally in love. when i think about my children i just do not want them to witness my struggle with obesity. i know food will always have to be monitored but my relationship with food will be more normal i think with the sleeve. as for timing. i hope to have the sleeve the first week of august. if all works out i will have surgery about two to three weeks before our new baby arrives and hope to be feeling better by that point. i will then continue my recovery from surgery as i am also on maternity leave from my work. with having surgery i will also be able to use up my big bank of sick time and not use my vacation time on my maternity leave. so i think that is a great plan. at this time i am planning on going to dr aceves for my surgery since i have a bmi of 31.8 and will be self pay. i am a nurse and never thought i would consider mexico. i did talk to a doctor in tucson and he said i would not even qualify for his program. point blank. so for surgery in tucson i would need to wait for several years and more weight gain and more comorbidities..... that just seems crazy!!! i have 70-75 lbs to loose. and i have been on some kind of diet it seems my whole life.... well at least planning some sort of diet. the more i read of dr aceves and his program in mexicalli i get more convinced he is the doctor for me. i love that he has so many patients on this board that highly recommend him and from what i can find on my own research a great reputation and wonderful surgical stats. so that is that. thanks again for your support. kelly

believe me, that thing ain't going nowhere. Had it before the weight gain so it should still be there when the fat is gone! if i can every get it off!
  10. Hey hope everyone is having a great day ! I want to come on here and just get some honest help and advice hopefully . To give you a brief summary about me , I do suffer from obesity and have a major weight problem. I can safely say that a majority of my weight gain has been within a period of 2 years. From the age of 18 - 20 years old I have managed to put on a whopping 80 pounds . May of 2018 I weighed in at 305 pounds and since then have lost around 17 pounds which puts me at 286. I have struggled with gaining a mass amount and loosing for a while. This time I feel like it has been a tougher time for me because I actually hit 300 pounds and that was a weight I told myself I would never reach. I do not suffer from binge eating disorder because I never sit and just eat a mass amount of food . I believe I make poor decisions on what I eat overall. Looking back at how I ate food , I could have easily been consuming 4,000 calories a day . Now I consume 1,700 -2,000 calories a day which keeps me satisfied . I do light exercise and occasionally go to the gym during the week. ( no set plan , just come and go when i have time). I have been following this for about 2 months now . I have tried many ways to loose weight such as weight watchers , hiring a personal trainer and counting calories. Through my attempts I always fail to loose the weight necessary and become highly discouraged. The struggle with my morbid obesity has been very tough for me . My whole life I have been over weight , but now that im a young adult Its become a huge burden to my body and social life. I have spoken to my doctor about my concerns regarding my obesity and we have done blood tests which all came back fine. He did mention if I was interested in doing weight loss surgery to help with my obesity and that is something I have been considering for almost a year alone. Medically I believe I qualify , due to my BMI of 42.5 and having asthma along with it. I want to see a nutritionist and bariatric doctor so I can be consulted and exhaust all my other options before I truely do the surgery ( if i get approved). Overall Im just tired of gaining so much weight after I loose a small amount. My life has been dramatically affected and want a change.
  11. :cursing:Ok fellow bandsters, I need to vent a little. I had my surgery on the 29th of July and have been doing very well with the weight loss (15 lbs) so far, but now I've gained 5 lbs the last 3 days, I was so close to 299, but now I'm back up to 305! It's been 3 days and the scale hasn't moved. My first fill is Fri in the AM. I hate this, I don't want to eat that much, but it's hard to ignore a rumbling tummy that won't shut up! I know I've lost 3 inches off my hips & thighs, and 1 inch off my neck so I know I'm doing well so far, but this is just so discouraging!!! Has anyone else had to happened to you? Can anyone relate? Thanks for letting me vent a bit.:huh2:

    Terrified of change

Many people experience a fear of failure when it comes to weight loss. This is cemented into their minds by the failures they experienced by years of "yo-yo" dieting. RNY gastric bypass surgery is a whole different experience. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. I found that it was not hard to lose weight when hunger was not constantly and incessantly gnawing at my bones. Back to your problem, weight gain during the pre-op stage. Here are some recommendations: Begin attending Bariatric Surgery Support Group meetings. They are generally free. Walk 30 minutes every day. Give up all carbonated beverages. I lost 20 pounds on giving up my 6 diet Coke a day habit pre-op alone. Read the calorie labels of everything you consume, especially at fast food restaurants and try and pick low calorie foods. I use to love milk shakes at "Steak and Shake" but after reading the number of calories in a milkshake, I gave that up for life. On the other hand a crunchy taco at Taco Bell isn't bad nor a bowl of chili at Wendy's.
  13. So I am waiting in the lobby of my surgeon's office yesterday for my 2 week post op appt. After a long, hard road, I finally got my Lap Band on April 10th. This attractive obese woman sitting next to me speaks up and warns me that the doctor is running approx. 45 minutes behind. We engage in small talk and when one of the staff members notice me and comments on my recent weight loss, she asks me when I had surgery. I tell her, and she was amazed that I was looking so "full of energy" so quickly. She is clearly obese, but tells she had the RNY surgery...6 years ago! (Not done by my surgeon, but another in a different town) It made me wonder what weight she may have started from. She is bundled up in a sweatshirt (it's 74 degrees) and I ask her if she's cold. She tells me she is just trying to hide her fat rolls. We laugh and I tell her she is in the safest place to not worry about that at the moment! She goes on to share with me that although she had orginally lost a significant amount of weight, she had started gaining. She said her weight gain was now out of control. She warned me..."whatever you do, make sure you change the way you eat!" "I could eat anything I wanted and still lost weight. I never learned to make any changes". I told her how the Band works, and how we must change our eating habits immediately after surgery. I told her that we still have absorbtion of all the calories and fat, etc. We are 'forced' to change our lifestyles as this is only a tool. She thought that was wonderful and wished that dietary changes had been stressed to her for long term success. She had come to see my surgeon to see if there was any further surgery that could be done to correct the stretched out pouch she'd created and hopefully get her back on track. I felt bad for her. I can't imagine going through all of this (or any other kind of WLS) only to gain it all back. How sad. She knew she was going to have to change her lifestyle. I have been struggling with hunger since surgery, but have so far found the will power and strength to resist eating too much, too often or the wrong food. I hope I am able to do this until my first fill or however many fills it takes to keep my Band working hard! I am so grateful that we are told up front that this is not easy. That we will have to work for it. That this is only a tool. I'm glad that I will get the satisfaction in the end of all this, knowing that I worked for the weight loss. That is didn't come easy. That I had to exercise and choose healthy foods. So meeting her, I realized that I don't want to see myself in a surgeon's office in 6 years warning someone else about watching what they eat and taking care of the gift we were given! So I just wanted to share and encourage everyone that we can do this! We were given this wonderful tool to help us get healthy, not just skinny. Let's make the best of it! Learn from the wonderful staff of doctors, nurses and dieticians! They are there to help us, and keep us accountable. And of course, we have eachother! Have a wonderful day and a great life! ~C

    Weight gain after 2nd fill

I would not worry to much about the weight gain. I would attribute that to like post op when you go from liquids and mushies to regular solid food. You see a lot of people on here who gain during that period. Give it a couple of days, make the right food choices and exercise. Wishing you positive thoughts and good health.
  15. Heather, ick, I'm sorry! I hate vomiting. Are you sure it's not morning or pregnancy related sickness babe? My band has been tight and picky lately. Not so tight I can't eat, but I'll take a few bites, feel the chest pain, belly tightness and have to stop or slow down. I have had lots of gas ever since banding and now that I'm preg I don't tend to take my Gas X since it's not safe to use. In pre-preg days, I found that being in a back-leaning position and taking gas meds really helped a tight band. If I took bites that weren't going down, I would lean or recline back for a few min and swallow a pill, 10 min later I could usually eat fine. This also helped to eat certain "no no" foods like Pasta and chewy breads. Lately the pregnancy and gas bloat are back. I often have a jacket or sweater with me in the restaurant so I can casually have my pants unbuttoned and lay the jacket across my tummy so nobody can tell. I gained 8 or 9 lbs the first few weeks of pregnancy, and only now the hunger has slowed a bit and my appetite is getting to a more manageable level, so I'm ok with the band tightness. I'm hoping to get thru the next 6 or 7 months without an unfill so that I have at least SOME control and don't go weight gain crazy.
  16. I had surgery on Dec 26, 2017. I’ve lost only 21lbs since surgery, and 34 total. I got down to 173 and stayed there for a whole week, so I think it wasn’t scale error. But now I’m at 179 and have stayed here for over a week, so it can’t just be water weight. I went up 6 lbs literally over night, not gradually. This is worse than a plateau!! I’m less than two months out. Could my weight loss be over? I stay under 1,200 caps and over 65 protein a day. I don’t drink as much water as I should, but I’ve increased water a lot from pre-surgery. I try to keep carbs under 50 a day. I work out for an hour five times per week and definitely feel stronger. I know muscle weighs more than fat, but from what I’ve read on line, one can only gain 0.5-1 lb of muscle per week, so I have a hard time believing a six lb weight gain is all muscle. What is going on???? PS. 1200 Cals May sound high, but with my work outs, and the fact that I rarely eat 1,200 and am usually around 1,000, I don’t think the calories can be to blame.

    Tattoos...

I got a tattoo on my foot about two years ago. The tatt artist told me that weight won't effect the foot tatt, much. Actually, weight loss can make a tatt look better. Unlike weight gain where it is stretched. Why did I choose my foot? I figured it was the one place on the female body gaurenteed not to sag

    Puzzled

I need to inquire in regards to people's propensity to "throw up/ vomit" food that isn't agreeing with them. Now, I'm six years post op and have never thrown up. In fact, I thought it was impossible to throw up. So, I'm curious about the number of posts I've read on this board where people complain of throwing up. Are you actually tossing your Cookies, or simply (which I have experienced on a couple of occasions over the past six years) finding a bit of bile coming up to the back of your throat? Oh, and just a comment regarding dumping. When I first became post RNY, I experienced a couple of classic dumping situations. I learned to stay away from high carbo foods and high sugar foods, like Desserts with sugar. At this point, if I do have a bit too many carbs or sugar, it pretty much just puts me into a groggy state where I fall asleep for awhile. One of the habits that put me back on the road of Weight gain, was when I was having a sleepless night, I learned I could get up and have a small bowl of dry cereal--corn flakes with no sweetening-- and milk and it would work faster and better than Ambien. And, by way of closing comment, I'd share that my efforts to get back on track this time are unique in the RNY experience. I started dieting on Jan 1,sticking to 1500 calories per day, not eating, dairy, wheat, or any white foods, eating lots of veggie salads and not much fired, except the occasional fried fish. I feel better and I've lost 35 pounds. But, the point I want to share is I've changed my thinking about food. When I first when down the RNY road, I just ate less of the same stuff (with the exception of sugar which I really tried to avoid). I experienced head hunger, especially after year 3 post op. Now, eating much more "clean", I don't experience head hunger and find eating healthy much easier than it ever was previously, and I'm much happier with my food choices and NOT looking for something to more fully satisfy me. So, the point I'm trying to emphasize is with the miracle of RNY and the cessation of hunger cravings that accompanies the surgery, if a person switches their dietary emphasis to clean eating they'll find a dramatic knock down of "head hunger" thinking. So, there you go.

    Help needed!!

Hi everyone! I could really use some helpful advice. I'm one year post band, and down 100 pounds! As great as that sounds, I'm having a very very difficult time with the loose skin on my arms. My arms had gotten very very big at the very end of my weight gain, and even with the weight loss I'm still having a hard time losing that flabby skin. I'm getting married in November, and I'm wearing a strapless down, and would hate to have these arms in all of my pictures for eternity. What has anyone done to help tone their arms? Keep in mind, I just broke my wrist in April, I needed to have surgery to fix it, so I'm not allowed to use anything with weights!

    RNY July 2011

I will be two years out Feb. 2. I started at 358 now I fluctuate between 200-205. I feel I should have lost more but I guess my body is settling. Yes, there are time I notice weight gain. The most I've gotten up to is 210. When I see that happening it's time to do something. So, believe it or not I go back to the liver shrink diet we had to do before surgery. Protein shake and a piece for fruit for breakfast and lunch. My dinner consists of 4oz meat and unlimited non starchy vegetables. I got those extra pounds off.

    I gained weight after surgery?

They typically start an IV of fluids before surgery, and they don't unhook you from it until right before you go home. All those fluids can make you gain weight! But it's just fluids, not really weight gain. I recommend that for now, you concentrate on healing from surgery and staying hydrated. Don't start worrying about weight loss for a week or two. I promise, it will happen!

6 More Days!! Day 8 of liquid diet..

the liquid diet will test your will power, i can say for 14 day i didnt cheat not one time, and this was during Christmas, amazed myself and my family that I stuck to it. Knowing what you have coming is SO worth it! What i can tell you and I dont want to be negative, but it is a possibility, after you can eat again u may try a "no no" food and be like oh that went down, so maybe i will try something else. DONT DO IT, it is the beginning of a very slippery slide. Example the other day i really thought i need a piece of candy, reminder, just because you had the surgery and made your tummy smaller your head still thinks it can do what it did before, so instead of eating 1 piece i ended up eating 25 pieces, yes 25 "fun size" pieces. There was NO fun in that but I couldn't stop. I felt so guilty that i did a 2 day liquid diet to "punish" myself. Just remember stay positive, set obtainable goals, and your weight gain didn't happen over night and neither will the weight loss. All the struggles and fighting is SO SO worth it. Keep in mind the big pictire. I have lost 37lbs since my 12/30/10 surgery, 56lbs since my highest weight and I FEEL SO MUCH better!! I wish you the best of luck and stay strong!

    Liquid Diet Problem

If they told you that you can't have the op, how will you feel? Because honestly, if you don't get it together now, they might turn you down, especially with a weight gain. My pre-op diet was a lot stricter than your...it was all liquid, with some Jello and some bouillon. Yes, it's tough, especially when you're cooking or eating with others. Personally, I think that for me it was those losses that kept me spurred on. I kept telling myself that each time I lost weight, it was going to be "gone forever" ans a step closer to my goal. Keep busy....get creative with your shakes...buy Davinci sugar free syrups and add them to your shakes to get new flavors...or freeze them. Another thing I did was buy smaller clothes as an inspiration and motivation...that put big smiles on my face when I got into them. Hope you get it together soon so we can see you on the losers bench....good luck. Xxx

Phase one...what was your turning point?

i am very excited about this path i am on to better myself by improving my health. even the preparation phase has been a great experience. the psychological evaluation probably was the most enlightening. it revealed that i am 'above average in intelligence' but quite dysfunctional in my relationships with men.:sneaky: this coupled with disappointments, loss, unplanned changes, and a desire to shut off myself from the world lead to ballooning of 100 pound weight gain over a period of six years!! The trip part about all of this is that i didn't see it piling on. talking about denial. i finally saw it staring in my face when i was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. i realized that i could die in my sleep from the underlying factor of being too fat... for the first time in my life i was scared. this was my turning point. i knew i needed to do something but whatever i needed to do i knew i could not l do it on my own. i did what i always do when i am afraid, or uncertain...i prayed. believe it or not, my two-fold miracle began when i found this page and then found a group of people at a center called true results who lead me each step of the way. so now i am almost at the finish mark for completing all my required testing. tomorrow i will have my nutritional consult which is the final visit. then i'll wait to hear from the insurance company. it's been a long four months... so tell me what was your turning point and where are you in the phase one process:rolleyes2:?
  25. Hello fellow Band Geeks! I was banded a little over a month ago and am finally on solid foods... I had my hernia repaired when he installed my band so my recovery time was a little longer but I feel great. I have lost 35 pounds so far and will find out my next weight on my first fill visit... May 6th. I am glad that I found you all on here for support. My whole family struggles with weight and food issues but most of them continue the same losing battles... I wanted to win the war so my battles needed to change. I gave up most carbs... and have so much more energy and hardly any carvings. My husband is very supportive but since he can eat anything he wants without weight gain... I love having you for support. I know this is a lifestyle change and I'm very excited to be on this journey with you.
