  1. hi there, I am having a sleeve at the end of May and due to travel on a 2 week holiday in the beginning of August. The holiday has been booked for some time, do you think I will be ok going on holiday 7 weeks after my wls? I suppose I am worried that there may be complications, or that I will still be struggling to drink or eat anything. I am not bothered about the all inclusive food (looking forward to not gaining for once) but I am more concerned that I might be at the airport struggling to get liquids down or keep food down at this stage. Any advice? anyone been on holiday so soon after wls?
  2. Did anyone experience sore muscles (mainly leg and glutes) a few weeks after surgery? I'm super focused on hydration right now because I've been lacking the past few days, and now I'm thinking I'm low on protein and that may be the cause? Any ideas appreciated! (I'm taking my vitamins as well as Ferrex 150 mg and vitamin c 75 mg) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J327AZ using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I’m almost at the end of my 2nd week of my pre-op diet. I started 12 days ago and weighed 333. After the first week, I was down 316. The last 5 days, I’ve gained 2 pounds. I don’t understand why this is happening. I’ve been very strict with it (no cheats) the last 5 days. All told, I’m only getting between 600-700 calories per day, and I’m averaging close to 10,000 steps per day. What am I doing wrong? How is this possible? Am I just retaining water? Has anyone else experienced this before? Thanks for any ideas you may have.
  4. Hello everyone. I had RNY gastric bypass on 12/2/19. Initially, I lost around 50 pounds in the first 5 weeks. During that time, I was only consuming 3-500 calories per day (just wasnt hungry). On my follow up visit with the surgeon, she expressed concern that I was not getting enough calories and wanted me to shoot for 1100 per day. I have done my best to increase my caloric intake but it has required me to eat higher calorie food in order to do so (not what I would consider to be diet food at all). I have been able to get up to an average of around 800-900 calories per day now. Since increasing my calories, I have nearly stopped losing weight. Over the last three weeks+ I have only lost 5 pounds which is very frustrating after seeing that first 50 pounds fall off so quickly. The last 7 days, my weight hasn’t moved at all. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a long stall that should go away soon?
  5. <!-- DEEP. THOUGHTS. BEGIN. --> I put on a (new) bikini yesterday to take a picture of myself for this 6 week post op milestone. When I was cropping my head out of the picture on my phone, I was taken aback a little (okay alot) at how my body looks now. For some reason, I never noticed until yesterday how my abdominal muscles are so much more noticeable these days. I knew I had them (I could feel them under my skin), they just never stuck out they way they do now. And my new lifted arms look nice and trim and toned. My arms have NEVER been trim nor toned. I look at this picture and find it hard to believe that its me. I have never looked like this in my life. Even when I was a thin, 105 lb teenager, my body never looked as fit as it does now at 47 years old. Crazy. Thanks WLS. Thanks Plastics. Thanks ME. I am forever grateful and only wish I did more sooner. <!-- DEEP. THOUGHTS. END. --> Anyway, some 6 week post-op highlights/updates: SWELLING & PAIN My waist has returned to pre-op measurements (thank goodness). My lower abdomen and upper thighs are still bigger than post op. So my pants remain tight in these areas, but at least I can button them up now without feeling like I'm going to bust out of them. My right boob is comparatively hard and swollen (vs my left boob) and I have taken to applying ice packs to relieve the achiness. Of all my PS areas, my boobs cause me the most pain (which is fitting since they were the least of my worries in the first weeks after surgery) There are distinct areas on my various incisions that are causing some pain due to the sutures being expelled and breaking the skin when rubbed against. These areas don't bleed, but they ooze. I went for a run this morning and had to stop due to pain. Turns out a spot on the incision of my right side boob split open and bled quite a bit. I had to steri-strip it closed and put a large bandage on it. I still cannot raise my arms to its full extension. There is no pain, just tightness. I need to practice raising them more often. SCARS & SILICONE TAPE I have been using silicone tape for almost 2 weeks now. I take them off to shower and put them back on when I'm dried off. I prefer having silicone tape on my incisions than none. My incisions feel less "tight" (especially in my armpits); the tape holds down any wayward sutures, as well as protects them from any rubbing from my clothes. I don't put tape on any areas where the skin is broken. I put some tape on a couple old WLS keloid scars and I swear they are flatter! They are still dark, but they are not as raised as they were. I guess this stuff works. The areas that have not split nor rubbed raw are healing nicely (no keloids!). There are no raised areas except for one end of my tummy incision, at the exact spot where one of my drains were. And this was the drain that I had accidentally pulled on a and caused bleeding (and PAIN!) while I was still in hospital. FOLLOW-UP APPT with DOC Pleased with my healing, told me that the aches and pain and wounds and oozing is normal. Just keep washing my incisions with soap and water everyday. He applied some silver on all the areas where the skin was broken and it STUNG. But then he applied some silver on the part that I split open during my run and OH MY GOD it HURT. I cried. It's been 5 hours already since he put it on me and it STILL HURTS. I even took a pain killer and I still have to hold the area whenever I move. Told me not to wear the silicone tape all the time, and that I should have about half the day when they are uncovered. No need to wear compression garments anymore...told him I like them, and he said I can wear if I want to, but to have some time (half the day) not wearing them. I am cleared for all "controlled" exercise (lifting, yoga, running, etc). I am not to participate in any contact sports or activities with sudden movements (for some reason zumba falls under this category, lol). Apparently I have not been massaging myself with the correct degree of "firmness". He showed me how hard I should be applying pressure and OH MY GOD, the amount of pressure he applied HURT. I was not massaging anywhere close to that level. I don't even think I can! Speaking of massages, he said I can go get regular ones with my masseuse, no adjustments necessary. Told me I MUST stretch my arms more, as he was not too happy about how far I could raise my arms without feeling tightness. Told me I was in no danger whatsoever of undoing any stitches so I need to aim to stretch further and further and would like to see me have full range of motion by our next appointment in 1 month. Guess i have some work to do! The no swimming, nor submersing in water ban continues. That's all for now. Oh, and here is a side-by-side body comparison pic:
  6. So I’m 6 weeks out from my surgery and I have to admit that I had a pretty easy time immediately afterwards. After nausea the first day in the hospital, I have had no side effects - no gas pain, no more nausea, no aversion to temperature/taste/texture, etc. However, I feel like I am hungry ALL THE TIME and have found that I can EASILY eat 1000+ calories in a day. I am making sure to get all of my protein in (I average about 85g per day), as well as a minimum of 64oz of water, and I have been doing so mostly without the aid of shakes/clear protein drinks the past couple of weeks. I know that meeting that protein solely with food is part of why my calories are so high but I have tried to use shakes for meals and I am just SO HUNGRY the rest of the day when I do so (which results in my eating “bad” snack-y/trigger foods that have more carbs, such as lots of cashews) that it hasn’t seemed worth it. My weight loss has started to slow, however, and it wasn’t fast to begin with so I’m worried that I’m ingesting too much. Any thoughts? Anyone else eating this many calories this far out? It’s really worrying (to me) to see so many who are 1 year out say they can barely get 800 calories when I have no issues and could honestly eat more :-/ If it matters: I’m 37, 5’11”, and my weight on DOS was 331.8. Current weight is 313.9.
  7. Today is 4 weeks post RNY surgery for me. - Down 16.8 lbs. I've had a couple of times where my weight has stayed stable for more than 5 days in that 4 weeks (including now). Still watching to see if a pattern emerges and trying to take it in stride (not always successfully). - No issues with liquids at all (yay!). I have been getting between 80 and 100 most days. - Eating up to 4 oz at a time. I haven't tried for more except with greek yogurt (I eat the whole container of the Oikos triple zero which is just over 5 oz). - On soft foods for the last 2 weeks and so far I've tolerated everything I've tried (eggs, Tuna, Ricotta bake, lunchmeat, etc...). I had chicken for the first time today (canned and made into chicken salad) and that went down well. - I can get my protein in but only if I do a couple of shakes (or max a premier out by adding some collagen). - Walking daily up to 1 mile. I go back to work on Thursday (I was VERY fortunate to take a full month off). I also plan on starting back with my rowing machine in addition to the walking. All in all I am extremely happy with how I've healed so far. I'm looking forward to continuing the journey. I have a lot of work ahead of me to get to a healthy weight but I am hopeful.

  9. My weight loss has stalled for the last week and a half. I am 12 weeks post op from sleeve. Is this normal and has anyone else had the same issue? If so, any suggestions how to kick start it.
  10. Okay, so we all know about it but I have a specific question... When in the stall, does the weight fluctuate? Like a two pound flux? Just want to make sure I am in the stall or is this something else? I don’t want to make myself crazy changing things if it is just typical. Thoughts? Thanks!
  11. 6 Weeks Post Op!

My world is drastically different! I now walk 3 to 4 miles a day and I’m constantly getting up to move my body! .

I close my Apple Watch rings daily and about 4 to 6 days a week I double or triple them!

I have been released to have all foods. When I reintroduce some I need to start at 1 ounce to see how “Tiny Tummy” likes it!

I am not reintroducing sugars, coffee or junk! I did not pay close to $13,000 to fail! .

I went to get follow up bloodwork done this week and my numbers are all in the perfect range! .

This is my new world and I am happy it!

  12. I have not lost anything in almost 2 months. I am 4 1/2 months post-op. I have stuck to my plan. Very low carbs and sugar. I was allowed all solids at three months but haven’t gone crazy adding things. My protein is always 60+ grams a day. I have a protein shake if I know my day is going to be hectic. I have a peanut butter weakness, but it’s really just about a tablespoon or so a day (The bad kind-Skippy). I am always over my 64 ounces of water. I try to get in exercise through walking and or running at least 3-4 times a week. Help me jump start this thing!
  13. Well I am only in day 3 of my 4 week pre sleeve optifast diet. I have to have 3 protein shakes/bars a day in replacement of meals. I am allowed low carb vegetables and some berries. I have severe headaches that panadol just can't get rid of. My belly is currently grumbling as I type this I am also currently considering going out and picking at the left over dinner I cooked my family. Am I actually hungry or do I need to be mentally stronger and push through. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  14. I had surgery on 12/12/19 and I dropped 20lbs right away, then another 3 over the 3rd week. But I've been stalled for over a week and a half. I decided to stay consistent with my protein, meet my water goals and stay on top of my vitamins. After a couple days of this, I dropped 3lbs over night!! I know it's a small victory but after having surgery being stalled so long is worrisome. Anyone else go through this?
  15. Well so far my stomach has handled all the foods that I've swallowed over the last week. Of course around 1oz to 2oz at a time well chewed (otherwise noted weights). 4oz of air-fryed Oldbay seasoned salmon fillet fits perfect, 3oz of air-fryed lemon pepper chicken breast, 4oz air fryed Oldbay seasoned Mahi Mahi, 3oz apple/cherry/hickory smoked pulled pork without sauce (not needed damn it was good. I smoked and vacuum sealed the day before surgery), 1/4 cup roasted salted peanuts, and 4 oz air fryed shrimp with Oldbay seasoning. I am very happy with my progress so far. I'll stick with meats, seeds and nuts for another couple of weeks and then try to incorporate some veggies. I hope everyone is healing well.
  16. I'm stalled. Have lost 1 lb in the past 4 weeks. I am so terrified that I am done losing. I have 8 lbs till goal and am hoping to loose another 10. So 18lbs total. I keep battling the same 1-2 on fluctuation. Any experience?? Help me please.
  17. Kinda sucks but I lost 48 pounds in two months now I have to figure out how to break this stall. I’m already doing about 700 calories a day. Maybe nows a good time to hit the gym?
  18. Week 5 Post Op Report

What a journey! I am 5 weeks from surgery and a total of 24.4 pounds down!

I feel amazing! I’ve incorporated a ton of walking and I’m using my Apple Watch to help me along! I have closed all three of my fitness rings for 11 days straight! Ok, so I am in LOVE with my Apple Watch. I've had it for almost a year and I am just now tapping into it's fitness power!

I keep on top of my protein, vitamins and biotin!

I struggle with water but I average about 50 ounces a day. I have only had one day where I had to “purge” because something did not agree with me. Tuna and my Tiny Tummy still do not agree so I’m going to leave it alone for a while!

I walk on average a little more than 3 miles a day for my exercise but manage to get in at least 13,000-17,000 steps a day depending on how my schedule goes.

I get up every hour and walk around for at least five minutes. Then if I’m watching a show I get up and walk in place during the commercials!

I meet with my doc this week for a progress report.

I have one more week before I graduate from soft foods to the final phase!

I’ve got my cookbooks ready, my food scale ready and my measuring plates ready!

I could NOT be more happy with my progress! I feel amazing and I’m grateful to have this tool!

You got this sis! You totally do.
The ocean is so peaceful. Some days I get blessed with seeing whales, dolphins and seals. It is truly amazing.

You can go to under our name at the top left section and click "TICKERS" you can create them there. Then when you lose weight you just go to "my surgery" and change your weight and they will adjust.

On the liquids, do sugar free pop-cycles. They are more like a treat than a liquid and they count as 2 ounces each! Liquids not the funnest part of our journey but who cares....LOL. I do like the IsoPure clear liquid protein drinks, you can get them at GNC. The flavors are ok. I also LOVED Kettle and FIre Broth and Epic Broths so I drank them all the time, it's good for you. It's BONE BROTH. Kinda pricey but the good stuff usually is.

Thank you for the encouragement/positivity!!! I'm going to conquer this liquid phase, moment by moment. I also appreciate the mini tutorial of how to get the ticker. I'm thinking of starting status updates after my pre-op visit with the surgeon on Friday. I really enjoy the personal perspective and experience being shared, without feeling like the thread is being dominated. I look forward to how each person is approaching the wls lifestyle. Thank you lady, good night. Happy Whale watching. I love seeing the dolphins at Hermosa Beach.

    3 Month Stall. WTF?!

Hey all! I am frustrated! Can you tell by the title of my post? Lol! I had surgery on 4/9/19 and although I am down 71lbs, I have been stalled for 3 months now! I've only lost 6lbs since October. I'm not sure what is going on. I will say, back in April of 2017, I did have a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy so maybe my hormones are all over the place. I need advice BAD. Has anyone experienced this long of a stall? If so, how did you come out of it? I am grateful for this tool and am trying to get all I can out of it. HELP!
  21. So, I have my 2 year appointment with my surgeon and nutritionist next week. I looked at my weight at my 1 year appointment and compared to this morning, I have gained about 5 pounds. Not horrible in a year. I have gotten away from tracking my steps and food so I am going to go back to wearing my FitBit. I also am going to go back to tracking my food in MyFitnessPal. I figure if I can track at least breakfast, lunch and snacks, this should make me more aware of what I am eating and where my protein, fat, sugar and fiber is to make sure I am eating what I am supposed to. I also need to be better about drinking water. I usually get about 75% of the suggested amount but I know that is not good enough. I also adjusted my goal weight. I really wanted to be under 200 pounds but for me, that is just not realistic. I would be satisfied with 225 and really happy with 215. I have to try and remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint; surgery was NOT the finish line and I cannot just coast. I still need to put in the effort to keep off the weight I worked so hard to lose!

  22. And I woke up with a scratchy throat and ear pain.... no sniffles. Calling the doctor tomorrow, but any idea of what to do to stay healthy? I don’t want to postpone things.
  23. I was actually surprised when my surgery/Nut group kept telling me "don't worry about calories, just worry about volume". It's a very proactive university based operations, which seems to be on the very cutting edge of the craft. So far it is working incredibly well. As such, here is the Post 6 week to 3 month plan: Diet plan: Three structured meals a day (B,L,D) A meal consists of: 2-3 oz protien (weigh after cooking) 1-2oz cooked or raw veg. * Portion size will gradually increase over time, but remember to stop eating when you feel content or satisfied, do not overfill. Remember to eat slowly chew well to allow yourself to feel full, before you take the next bite. Protein: there are no restrictions, but wait 3 months before having steak. Eat a variety of protiens. Protien will be the focus of your diet. Vegetables: eat at every meal. Limit starchy veg, like corn, peas, potatoes, pasta. Etc.. Drink 2 protein shakes per day to maintain minimum 60-80 grams protein. Combined fluid total of at least 64 oz daily, no caffeine, carbs, sugar, alcohol . Do not skip meals. Eat just enough, and slow enough to feel full. Do Not drink anything from 30 minute prior, to 30 minutes after each meal. Very important! Do not chew gum (For the rest of your life) Take your vitamins and minerals. So that's it in a nutshell. No calories defined, and I asked several times. They kept saying that if I follow the percentages (Basically 2/1 Protein over veg, with very limited starch) and eat till full, without drinking, it's a slam dunk. So far, a lb per day like clockwork. luck!
  24. Had my 3 week post op follow up with my surgeon tonite. Before he came by to check me out, one of his PA's took all my steri-stips off, and I finally got a good look at all my incisions. I was glad to see that they are pretty flat, considering. About 80% of them have some sort of scab in varying states (newish, crusty, peeling, etc.. or whatever). When Doc came by to check me out, he said he was happy with the way I was healing, among other things: NOT cleared for regular exercise. He said I could walk as much as I want and can do lower body (i.e., leg) work, but that's it. NOT allowed to submerge my body in water yet (i.e., no swimming, baths, hot tubs, etc.) NOT allowed to expose my healing incisions to the sun (which I can't do anyway since I'm to keep my garments on...see below) I am cleared for sex. LOLOLOLzzz...I didn't even know I wasn't allowed. Ooopsies. With the steri-stips now off, I am to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Am to keep the compression garments on at all times (save showering) until I see him again in another 3 weeks. I asked about the silicone tape (for scar maintenance) and he said ideally they should be used at least 6 weeks after surgery. Apparently the body is supposed to do some healing first. I will be given a supply at my next follow appt. He gave me my "before" pictures he took of me back in June 2018 and holy moly, I look different! Here is a bit more detail organized by each procedure site: ARM LIFT: The arm incisions seems to be the scabbiest of all the areas. It is also the "raise-iest" incision, specifically in the armpit. Doc said I am still pretty swollen there, which is a little surprising, because I thought it was normal sized. So I asked does this mean my arm will get even smaller, and he said I could probably expect to see a bit more shrinkage, but that I can also expect the skin to loosen a bit as well, so net result may be zero from this point. I'm pretty happy with the size right now...so I do NOT want it to get smaller...thought I wouldn't mind a bit more definition (can't wait to be cleared to work em out!) I can wear deodorant if I want to. He asked me to make an effort to lift my hands up as far as comfortable every day until I get full upward extension, but to be careful as the armpit incision is statistically the most likely to separate and become a wider scar. BREAST LIFT w/ SIDE BOOB EXCISION: As the title says, I ❤️ my boobs! The whole lifting aspect of this was supposed to be secondary, but OMG, I love my boobs! They are a lot smaller than pre-op WLS, but may actually be bigger than I was pre-op PS (I think I'm a 30C now) but, they are so perky and stand-at-attention-y, LOL. They have fullness at the upper part now, I won't need a push up at all anymore. Actually, I probably don't even need a bra, they handle gravity all by themselves. And my nipples! After my breast lift correction: reduction many years ago, my nipples looked stretched out and flat. Now they are perky too and pop out a bit in a nice way even when I'm in a "non-aroused" state...or maybe I'm now perpetually aroused, LOL. .I told Doc that I feel there is still a liiiiiitttlbe bit too much skin left in my left upper side boob for my liking. He said if after 3 months, it doesn't work itself out, OR I am still displeased, he will do some maintenance in that area under local anesthetic. Bonus. I can wear regular bras now if I want, but if I want to wear an underwire, to make sure there is some foam or padding around the wire. TUMMY TUCK First thing Doc said when he walked into the room was "Look at your waist!" (I was naked save my panties on the exam table/recliner). That made me feel good despite the fact that my waist is actually bigger now than it was was pre-op, as is my lower abdomen. But it is super smooth and tight now When I told him about the size increase, he and the PA said that I can expect there to be swelling for up to a YEAR. Wtf?! This is the first I've heard this. Granted my stomach is not so very big in the grand scheme of things, but it IS much bigger than it was before. Le Sigh. I told him that I am generally standing upright, except for the little while after I get up after sitting down for a while. He said what I figured he would: get up more often. I don't have to get up for long, just lots. "Its better to go for 10 minute walk every hour than a 60 minute walk every 5 hours" That's all for now. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow now that my steri-strips are off...
  25. Hi everyone, I had my by-pass operation 3 weeks ago and lost 14 pounds in the first 2 weeks after it. During the 3rd week I noticed that my weight loss had somehow stopped, and at the end of the 3rd week I had put 2 pounds back on. I am still on liquid foods such as Water, Milk, Clear Soup, Yoghurt, Jelly. I only have each day a Yoghurt or a Jelly for one meal, and Clear Soup for another meal. In between I drink Water or Milk. I had a Stroke 22 months ago and I am now in a wheelchair, so I am unfortunately very limited to being able to do exercise. I just can’t understand why all of a sudden my weight has stopped coming off me, as I eat less than a rabbit does. I am not even starting to feel hungry anymore. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through the same problem as me before. I’m sure that there is a perfect reason for this strange weight loss to stop like this, but I just don’t know what it is. Any help would be extremely grateful. Thank you.
