    July 2024 surgery buddies

    Howdy - I'm scheduled for July 2nd - it's coming up quickly and NGL, I'm nervous. I was planning on the Roux en-Y gastric surgery and since reading about the SADI-S (Loop) I've been wondering if that's a surgery option for me, or if it is solely a revision of the Classic Sleeve. Does anyone know this answer?

    Food Before and After Photos

    Some of my eats the past few days: Strawberry summer salad. I have an obsession with salads!! This one has baby spinach, strawberries, pomegranate seeds, cucumbers, walnuts, feta cheese, topped with crispy shallots and crispy garlic, with a pomegranate molasses dressing. My bowl below which I ate over the course of 3 hours. Chocolate basil seed protein pudding. 2/3 cups of basil seeds, 1.5 cups unsweetened almond milk, 1 scoop chocolate whey, 2 tbsp melted peanut butter, stir and leave overnight. Top with berries and pumpkin seeds. I ate 3/4 of one.

    Liquid stage ideas

    Your program might be different, but mine allowed sugar free pudding. Add a scoop of protein powder or peanut butter powder -- after it's set -- and/or make it with a milk like fairlife that has added protein. During my stage, I went to my local fav Vietnamese restaurant and bought a couple servings of pho broth, which I added a little extra bone broth powder to. I got tired of my protein shakes pretty quickly, but I'd use half of one to make a faux smoothie using either sugarfree drink mixes or sugarfree jello, watered down with extra milk or water so the sweetness wasn't overpowering. (premier protein chocolate shake + nsa peanut butter powder (PB&Me) = peanut butter cup shake) Tomato juice is awesome to awaken your taste buds after so much faux-sweet shakes. Campbells cream of tomato soup mixed really well with unflavoured protein powder for me, provided I added it after I finished heating the soup. (I used Boost unflavoured protein).

  6. My first cheat meal was 4 months post op (with surgeon’s approval) now 6+ yrs post op all meals are cheat meals! Joking! Maybe 10% now. But I’m a big fan of a long term sustainable diet that you can adjust as needed. So alternate between strict and relaxed however I still prioritize protein.

Once I was through all the phases and it was ok to eat 'normally' I started to allow myself a 1/4 of a protein based pizza once a week as Friday's is my pizza night if I am not out out so I have gone from having an entire pizza and garlic bread to 1/4 (at most) of a pizza. I try to be good most of the time and even my little bits of 'boldness' are minor by my pre-op standards, in that I know I probably eat too many nuts at times but they are yummy and I am probably having a couple of squares of dark chocolate (good for the heart ) a bit too often but they stop me feeling like I am being restricted. If I felt I was living too restrictively food wise I think I would just go back to bad habits again. I do try to avoid potatoes (a love of my life), pasta and bread when at home but if out for a meal I may have a small amount, or take a few fries from a friends plate (with their permission ) I didn't go through all of this to be miserable for the rest of my life so just have to know my own limits and make the best choices for myself.
  8. I varied between protein shakes and soups mainly. I made a lentil and carrot soup with a kick of chili that was delicious and got me through many meals. Reminds me that I must make it again I also just had a low sodium liquid vegetable stock pot/cube a couple of times.

    Shakes, bone broths, broths, consommés, cream soups, protein water are really your only options. It’s essential to focus on your protein and to consume things that are thin enough not to irritate your poor swollen & healing tummy & digestive system. Have you tried straining (really well so no little bits of herbs, vegetables, etc. in it) won ton soup or ramen noodles so you only have the broth? It might help by changing up the flavours you’re sipping. Try blending milk & a little yoghurt though it can be a little thick/dense & therefore difficult to tolerate at this stage & better in purée.
  10. all good comments thank you! I am on plan 90% if not 95%. I do eat the alternatives but sometimes they aren't the option (such as this restaurant) and I wasn't sure If I was alone but it seems like everyone has a different perspective. My hubs even asked if it was okay that he could eat it another time without me or something (he has no weight problems). I am proud of myself that the meal didn't end up being going into an uphill battle to get back on track. I felt guilty eating them and felt like I messed up, but just continued the next day. I feel as though that mindset is getting me out of the "diet" mentality and allowing me to live this way forever.
  11. Got mine on 5 June. Waiting for first in person appt to take off bandaid bc terrified to do it myself. So far drinking seeq protein water and some thinned Greek yogurt . Dying to find new ideas, new to this forum and would love to get in touch directly with other June ops

    June 4th - my life changed FOREVER

    Welcome! I'm still a baby here myself (almost 12 weeks post-OP). I remember my first sip of creamy chicken broth on day 4, it felt like life and optimism was returning to me! If you need to, slow down even further. I remember my care team said 1 teaspoon every 5 minutes (when I was first reintroducing non-protein shake liquids), and sometimes that worked for me and sometimes it didn't. Most broths I could get down in shorter time, but creamier soups it would take quite a bit longer. You get used to either reheating your soup or sipping it cold, lol. XD

    I'm sure that 99% of us here feel you on the disordered eating. ❤️ RE: protein water: I find most protein water/powders excessively sweet. If you hunt around, you may find one that's sweetened with a sweetener that seems less powerful to your taste buds -- but I myself have had very little luck. Instead, I water it down further and add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to help cut through it a bit. It might take you longer to drink 1 serving -- but the protein absorbs the same. Same with the protein powder / shakes -- water it down with more milk if you need to, or add other flavours. I've had great luck adding instant decaf coffee to vanilla, and unsweetened peanut butter powder to chocolate (PB&Me No Sugar Added is a great friend! A little tougher to stir manually, but perfect in a blender or with a frother). Depending on where you live, there may be milk brands that have added protein already, which is a bonus, For cooking, I've yet to find an unflavoured protein powder that is tasteless and doesn't clump up, etc. If you're not vegan/vegetarian, bone broth powder is a great protein additive with minimal flavour -- just make sure you check the sodium, cause some brands are nice and low and others are crazy. It usually comes in both a chicken and beef broth variety. Usually the flavour is mild enough to be complementary to savory dishes. It sounds like you're well ahead of the game, doing all this work pre-OP, so I'm sure you'll do great! You sound very organized & mentally prepared.

    Protein Shakes: Premier Protein. Costco (in Canada -- I think it's Sam's Club in the USA?) sells them in bulk for a pretty good price, although usually just the chocolate and vanilla. Other stores carry the more gourmet flavours (I LOVE their banana but the strawberry makes me cringe) at a steep price, so they've become occasional treats. Protein Powder: - Boost - Just Protein (unflavoured) - Isoflex Chiller (Peach) -- for a protein water Bone Broth Powder: (I like to add them when I'm cooking to sauces, chili, etc for a little extra shot of protein) - Prairie Naturals Beef / Chicken - New Roots Herbal - New Zealand Beef Protein Bars: - ONE (all okay -- except birthday cake, bleck!) - Simply Protein - mint chocolate or chocolate raspberry are my go-to - Pure Protein - chocolate salted caramel (it's like a salty Mars bar!) ** for the ONE bars, I think I like their nutrition stats more than I like their tastes / textures. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup one is pretty good, but for the most part it's just a bar that does the job and doesn't leave me feeling sick or heavy. I mostly just keep them on hand at work and in my purse in case the lunch I do pack triggers me somehow and I need a quick replacement.
  16. I really don't, and that's because it's a very slippery slope for me. I have found so many alternative foods that taste good and don't leave me feeling deprived that it's not worth the inevitable guilt, the possible weight gain, and extra work it'll take to get me back to where I am now. I'm 2 years out from my original surgery and a year out (at the end of this month) from my revision surgery. I'm so use to how I eat that I can't imagine trying to eat any of the stuff I use to eat. There's keto bread, keto bagels, keto English muffins, keto brownies, keto blueberry muffins, Legendary pop tarts and cinnamon buns, mashed cauliflower (works beautifully in place of mashed potatoes), crustless pizza, pizza with cauliflower crust, riced cauliflower instead of regular rice, monk fruit sweetener instead of sugar, sugar free tropical popsicles, Real Good Foods keto protein chicken nuggets, Atkins 1 person meals, Real Good Foods 1 person meals, the list goes on and on. We get creative with what we cook (still have steak and chicken and stir-fry), chocolate milk has now become almond milk, 1 tbsp cacao powder, and 2-3 packets of monk fruit sweetener. Use a frother and it's AMAZING. There's chips you can get at Whole Foods that are made with soy flower or almond flower and tastes EXACTLY like regular chips (I love the BBQ and the sour cream cheddar ones). For ice cream, I get Rebel ice-cream. Low to no carbs, nearly no sugar at all, low calorie, lactose free. Tastes AMAZING. I just have no need for any cheat meals.

    I have the lemon and lime and it is fine for what it is. I tried the pre-mixed/made (found it weird that it was pea protein based) one first and once I could stomach it I then ordered the clear whey powder. I must get back to using it again, I have the little Robinsons no added sugar lemon pots that I carry with me everywhere that way it makes me drink water. I also use the MyProtein pancake mix, maple syrup flavour, as I find a couple of small ones with a bit of fruit is a nice sweet treat every now and then, though I use half their measurement advice as I can only eat two small pancakes. I then also use their crunchy peanut butter in some of my foods - satay chicken, homemade protein bars etc. In my next order I am going to get the peanut butter powder as I think it might be easier to incorporate.

I just wish that they offered sample bags across their whole range so you don’t waste money on a big bag if it’s something you cannot stomach.   19. Hello! I had the sleeve gastrectomy 9.5 months ago. I've been working on exercising and eating right, but I've been in a bit of a stall these past 5 weeks. I went down from 290 to 170 pounds, but I've been stuck at 170 for 5 weeks. I've been eating 1200-1500 calories a day and still not losing weight. I've done some research, and apparently, your body adjusts to low calories after a while of eating at that rate. At the beginning of my post-op phase, there were some complications on my end. I didn't eat ANYTHING for two months straight, not even protein shakes, and I was only hitting about 20oz of water daily (which landed me in the ER, but I'm fine now lol). I've looked online, and it says for my height, age, and weight, a good maintenance level would be 2100 calories. I'm eating well under that in a deficit and heavy weight lifting, so I don't know why my body won't drop anything. I'm worried that my body adjusted to the 0-calorie few months I had, then the 500-1000 calories three months after that. I've only started hitting my 1200-1500 calories in March when I joined the gym. I know the stall is not due to "muscle gain" because I'm not eating in a surplus, and I'm only eating 65-80 grams of protein in hopes of simply maintaining while I drop fat. I also read online that apparently people who go through rapid weight loss have even lower calorie maintenance than the average person, and that makes sense, but surely it cannot be under 1200, right? The majority of bodies need 1500 to operate. I'm so confused! When I ask my surgeon about calories, he says not to worry about them and eat healthy, which I'm doing. It's just frustrating because I want to work on building muscle, but I want to lose some more fat before that. I guess my question is, does anyone know anything about calories after surgery, and/or how many calories are you eating after surgery to help lose weight?

    oh yummy!! I know for me these protein bars are good small meal for me to eat about an hour or so before I hit the gym. Its not heavy and gives me good energy for the hourish that I am there.
  21. I guess I've been doing this all along, at least once I was allowed regular foods. I'll have a small serving of ice cream if I go to an ice cream place. I had a couple bites of cheesecake a while back. I'll have a square of dark chocolate a few times a week. I generally order chicken or fish, and not fried, with veggies at a restaurant, but I'll eat the sauces and not worry about it. I'll eat a couple fries off someone else's plate. That'a all I want is one or two. My program is fairly simple, 60-80g protein and 64 oz water are the only rules I was given, (no specific calorie or carb rules) with an added recommendation of aim for 3 meals a day, about 40% protein per meal, and avoid snacking. Obviously, there is the list of good choices and not so good choices that we all know, like avoid oils and fried foods, and eat nutrient dense foods, etc. But I stopped keeping a written food journal every day because it isn't required of me, and for me, I don't want to live like I'm on a perpetual diet. Somewhere I heard the advice to follow a 90/10 rule. If 90% of what you eat is healthy, don't worry so much about the other 10%. That resonates with me. Also, I like the concept of a "planned indulgence" instead of a cheat meal. Cheating implies doing something wrong. Planning to indulge in something is deliberate and you're in control of it. For me, that fits my life.

    They aren't easy to find! I happen to stumble across it when I was looking at the protein bars and it was 2 bars for $4 so I figured I would grab them with how little calories and carb high protein. They only have the salted caramel and the peanut butter chocolate, I put them in the fridge and holy moly DELISH!
  23. So what I eat is ALWAYS on my mind. I meal prep every single week and have my weeks very calculated already pre-tracked and I stay within my calories. I workout 6days a week. But I am about 5 months post op and this weekend, hubs and I took the kids to Dave's Hot chicken, I ate the kale slaw and half a tender 4-5 fries. I felt so guilty! But at the same time it felt so good to eat with my family and it not be chicken and veggies while going out. I ate very small amount because I did not want to eat to restriction, but I was able to hang out with my family and not worry about food. Then that night we got Ice cream and I had 4 bites of hubbies delicious Cold Stone Chocolate Ice cream, those 4 bites I was satisfied and didn't feel like crap. I still woke up drank my protein coffee, did my work out and continued my normal diet. In a way, I am happy that it didn't turn into a binge like it would normally when I would previously diet, then again I feel like I halted my progress. Thanks for reading

    I have an unflavoured protein powder that I put into soups etc. but not sure what countries it can be purchased/delivered in - https://www.barinutrics.eu/fr/produits/barinutricsr-whey It doesn't have a smell (just double checked) and once it is blended/mixed in I have had no issues but it can clump a bit.

    For Protein Shakes already made: Premier Protein- they have really good flavors. Every single morning I drink the caffee latte with a decaf cold brew. start my day with 30g protein. For a powder: Isopure the dutch chocolate or the vanilla For Protein Bars: RxBar or Fulfil I have tried A LOT! and these are the best for me
