  1. My sleeve is scheduled for Thursday, the 4th. Very excited about that. I do have a question for those who have undergone the procedure. Is anyone on here a long term sleever? Meaning, if you've been sleeved for more than a few years. I'd love to hear how life has been treating you, and also give an insightful eye to those of use coming through the procedure. Some stuff I'd love to hear about are: health issues since having surgery (short or long term complications) diet and lifestyle revision surgeries (if needed) fitness routines impact on behavior/mood Anything would be really appreciated. Even if something isn't listed but you would like to provide some information, I really hope anyone here wouldn't mind sharing. Thanks again and very happy to be joining the sleeve club!

    20lbs a month

Right?! I thought that was odd!! Their practice really goes by statistics and average excess weight loss per month to calculate this but I think it is really unrealistic for a second timer especially. When I mentioned that I was stalled he said it was too early for a stall. He's a great doctor and I really trust him but I think he may not have real life data about what goes on post-op. Thanks! My brain still can't see the loss even though everyone else does. Band to Vsg revision: 5/23/17 HW: 315+ Starting weight: 294 Surgery Day: 281 Current: 235 Goal 170
  3. lots of people revise to the sleeve. I'd caution you though, that if you have any reflux with the band (as many do) your best revision option will be bypass.
  4. I had a band to sleeve revision almost 6 months ago. As for pain post op, I was in less pain, though the band was my first ever surgery. I took pain meds for three days then. For the sleeve I didn't take anything after the first night. Although I did stay in the hospital 2 days due to nausea. And I did have some nausea weeks 2-4. As for restriction. It is so much different than with the band. A few bites with the band and I'd be in pain, but then I could eat anything. I never found my sweet spot. With the sleeve, no pain from being stuck, just an uncomfortable feeling if I ate to much. I'm much happier with the sleeve I'm a slow loser, not terribly, but slower than a lot of people on here. Like I said I'm almost 6 months out and including my pre op im just under 50lbs lost. Would I go back to the band, hell no, or would I ever recommend it to anyone, no way. The band is horrible and I don't know why it's still used. Do I regret having the sleeve, not a bit, only that I didn't revise sooner, maybe I would not have gained back everything I lost with the band [emoji20].

    Want lapband out

I went in to my doctor and played up how painful my port was and he was able to get my insurance to cover the removal/revision after years of being denied. My band was removed in Feb. And my vsg will be on Nov. 1 Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Want lapband out

I just recently had a lapband to sleeve revision done, all in one surgery. The lapband was a huge waste of time and money for me. I had it in for 7 years and I'm so glad to be rid of it and actually on the way to a healthier me.

    Laughing at myself

Hi Lara! Welcome! I don't think you're alone in feeling nervous -- having had surgeries myself prior to my sleeve, I too was nervous. Some other really active posters here that have had the revision are Tiffykins and LilMissDiva -- I know I'm forgetting some, but they're very helpful about revisions Good luck to you on your surgery -- I know it will go great!
  8. I also had twins via an emergency c section with a bikini line incision from hip bone to hp bone. My revision from Lap Band to the sleeve doesn't not even come close to the pain from that. Like maybe 25 to 30%. My stomach muscles just felt like I'd had a brutal ab work out at the gym, and the surface incisions had some minor pain for a few weeks.

    New band to bypass patient

Did anyone have a rough start with the band to bypass revision??? I had Mine done on 8/8 and I was doing great in the begininng now I cant drink/sip anything and Im throwing up and still in hospital. Would really like to hear your stories
  10. When I had the revision done the Doctor made my opening wider so that my intake would be more. So now that my intake is more I am gaining wt. so that is why Im wondering if anyone has had this done. I have heard that it is possible.
  11. Hello, I had GBP surgery in 1998 & ended up having a revision due to a blockage. I am now thinking of having the lap band but want to know is there any one out there that has had this done, if so how are you doing & what Dr. did your surgery? Any info will help.

    To MX Alone

I will be having surgery here bc insurance will cover most of it. I will be going to MX for skin removal as it won't be covered. MX can be great option! My surgeon spoke about doing revisions bc the previous surgeon didn't remove enough so I would definately ask that question to whoever you go to. Good luck with your journey!
  13. I actually had my band done in Mexico in 2008. I decided to have the revision from band to sleeve early this year. I completed the 6 month requirement that UHC had and just got approved for the revision on last week. Took 2 days!! Don't give up!!

Ringing in the New Year Cajun Style!

I'm in Laplace outside of New Orleans. I was banded in August but had a port revision done at the end of november and my first fill mid December. I am wanting to drop about 50 lbs before July when I go to California...

    Revision?

I don't think anyone here can answer what your insurance carrier considers a revision. You are going to have to contact them directly. Perhaps you can phrase the question in a way which doesn't reveal you already had the band. "If I were to choose a band and then later, say, like 3 years from now, revise to the sleeve, would that procedure be covered, too?"
  16. So I am have my first appt with my doctor at the end of the moth to discuss gastric sleeve. I previously had a lapband but had to get it removed about three years ago. Would my sleeve be considered a revision or a stand alone procedure? My first surgery was self pay but I am needing my insurance to pay for this one. I'm worried if they consider it a revision that the insurance may not pay. Now I'm worried :-/

    Nausea

I am 5 weeks post op revision tomorrow and am suffering the same thing all of a sudden. DId you happen to find out what it was?
  18. so i asked my dr where he learned to do the sleeve. he said he taught himself after watching his partner do them and by also watching videos of other dr's who had done them. i guess he really learned while being in the operating room with his partner (who is the head of the bariatrics unit). my dr has done over 300 rny's, 100's of lapbands and 6 sleeves. he says he only had 1 leak ever, and that was in an rny patient. i also asked him if there were any deaths and he said 1, but that was a person who was getting a revision of a revision. he seems very honest and straightforward in all his answers. his 6 sleeve patients are all doing well. my dr works on one of the best bariatric teams in new york, which is the st lukes hospital bariatric unit, which is also a bariatrics center of excellence and a leading research center for bariatric surgery. their team is headed by dr julio teixeira, who has done thousands of wls and teaches other dr's. dr teixeira is also well known to do surgeries that many other dr's wont touch because theyre being done on patients at high risk and/or with complications. apparently hes that good. i dont know how many sleeves he has done. my dr is the no. 2 on his team and his name is dr james mcginty. my insurance has dr mcginty on my plan, but no other dr from that hospital is on my insurance as different dr's there take different insurance companies. im confident in my dr and he was the best and most experienced from all the dr's that were accepted by my insurance. what do you think about him saying he was self taught? im not really worried about him only having done 6 sleeves (this was discussed in a prior thread), im just concerned about what is considered the normal way for a dr to learn how to do the sleeve? any replies would be appreciated. ps - i did ask my dr a ton of questions about the sleeve and his procedure, including bougie size, how far from the pyloric valve does he start, leak testing and so on, and he answered them all to my satisfaction. and ive researched the sleeve so throughly that i knew what answers i should of gotten. he really seems to know what he is doing and i am very confident in using him, but i guess him saying he was self taught is making me think. ps - i edited this ps in later. i just found out my dr operated on james gandolfini (tony soprano) back in 2008 (see link below). so if hes good enough for tony soprano, hes good enough for me http://showhype.com/story/news_james_gandolfini_hospitalized /

What Made You Choose Rny Over The Sleeve?

My docs only do RNY or lapband. They won't do the sleeve due to higher risk of complicaitons like leakage. Even if they did sleeve, I would have opted for RNY because it can be undone if needed (not easily but possible). With the sleeve, most of your stomach is gone and the only revision they could do would be to take you to RNY. No surgery is perfect, you have to decide what is right for you. I agree with what kisersassy said and that was also a factor for me.

    Band to sleeve acid reflux?

Hi there, When I had my band, I only had one bad episode of reflux, after a fill. Had it for a day or so and went right back to get un-filled. That was the beginning of the end for me anyway and I never really was filled up too high again. Otherwise, I had the band for almost 4 years with no reflux issues. That said, I do have reflux with the sleeve occassionally. My doctor's orders were to be on Nexium or Prilosec for 6 months - that is the instruction for everyone, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms. I will say that there have been a few days where I actually took double dose (one in the AM, on in the PM) but I have scaled back down to one a day in the morning and I am doing fine. I have a jar of Tums by the bed just in case I feel a little funny before I go to sleep. I wouldn't dare go off the prilosec yet, as I am not quite 2 months out. I am going to wait, per dr's instructions and try to wean off in another 4 months or so. The prilosec/nexium is a way of life for a lot of us. The good thing is that I am rid of all the other problems that I had with the band. Make sure your doctor checks everything out thoroughly and you may want to stay unfilled. You don't want to do too much damage if you are thinking about having a revision to the sleeve. Get healed and good luck with your decision. Lara
  21. I just wanted to look and feel pretty. My health was so declining that I needed to have WLS as revision to the gastric bypass I had 10 yrs ago. Preop was not a bad plan for me--I now am challenged by eating the solid foods. I am glad you are getting sleeved soon and wish you well. Ronda
  22. So sorry for your loss. I had aspiration pneumonia also due to reflux from the band and spent a week in the hospital. It was so scary because at first they couldn't figure out what caused the pneumonia. They sent a gasteroentologist to run tests and found out what was happening. My pulmonologist told me to loosen the band because if I continued to aspirate I could end up with lung disease . I decided to unfill it completely. My BMI was low to begin with but the co-morbidities were enough for me to have surgery and the band had to be too tight to work for me. I plan on a revision to the RNY as soon as possible.
  23. Congrats. I'm a band to bypass revision scheduled for March 21. It's nice to see you are doing well. I have the same issues with photos and look forward to lots more family photos with me actually in them.
  24. Last year I almost died from my Lapband aspirating into my lung... I spent 3 weeks in ICU... I got a complete unfill and I still get sick on a daily basis.. How can I get my insurance to pay for a revision? I been banded since 2008 and I feel like this band is going to kill me! ????
  25. Glad to hear you're doing so well ! ! ! I agree the band surgery was way more painful than the sleeve revision. My main issue is where the stupid port was, and it was surrounded by a bunch of scar tissue. Cheers to you, and hopefully the clears are keeping you entertained.
