5 days post op, difficulty meeting protein goals
trekker954 replied to leliwhoaoh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too had the sleeve and my gallbladder removed at the same time. I'm sorry you are having a difficult time, but seriously, now isn't the time to be money pinching, when RTD shakes are going to keep you alive and healthy. Sip, sip, sip. And make sure you intake Water, tea, mix our water with crystal light or other flavors to make it easy to go down... But you cannot just say you can't do it, or can't afford it. You MUST!!! You won't be on shakes for long. Once you can tolerate food, and you have been cleared, you can get your Protein in. Many of us, continue to use shakes as it is an easy way to meet the daily goal. Premiere shakes are good, most of us tolerate those. Buy some GENEPRO. Its expensive, but you can mix it with just about anything and it has no taste. I way overbought in preparation and now find, that I have found my favorite flavor, its hard to use the other products I bought. oh well. I will continue to do, especially in this crucial beginning period, to drink and eat, what agrees with me best. -
Me and Artificial Protein are NOT Getting Along
BLERDgirl replied to MyssJones's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I like FAGE0% greek yogurt. It's 18 gm of Protein per 8oz. mixed with fruit you can get a pretty decent protein boost that way. If it's too think for you, add some lowfat milk and mix in a blender. As a vegetarian there are some organic protein powders out there: Biochem, Vega , Orgain organics to name just a few. There are also great unflavored Proteins that can be mixed with food. GENEPRO, Procource, Isopure and the infamous Un jury. FYI- you may want to talk to your doctor about the gummie Vitamins. They are complete and may not be giving you all the mineral and nutrients needs. My doctor said even flintstone chewables were better than gummies. -
I like the ready made premier Protein and the GNC lean shake!! Yummy! Your taste may change after surgery I've opted in get GENEPRO after surgery which is unflavored. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

What is best Protein Powder to add to soups ?
texasnewf replied to texasnewf's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Thanks everyone, I tried the Genepro and as everyone said I cannot taste it which is great. The only issue is , that I use lukewarm water in a coffee mug about halfways and stir in the Genepro with a fork and it completly disolves. Then I mix in more water and stir in Chicken boullion powder and microwave it to heat everything up.. After a couple minutes sitting the protein powder starts to clump up a little.. Is this normal ? Thanks -
Premier Protein is way to sweet for me. I also use GENEPRO and there has been much debate about the 30 grams. I'm sure by now if it weren't correct there would be consumer complaints to verify and adjust the claim. Do the research as I've seen the 15 gram claim before and don't think that is accurate. I like it cause I can mix it in everything even if just add 1/2 scoop to things like yogurt that already has 15 grams of protein to get to 30. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I couldn't stomach Premier Protein or GENEPRO. My NUT recommended these and they go down so much easier for me! ---------- Surgery date- 11/8/16 HW- 249 SW- 235 CW-198

Sleeved October 25th, am I on track?
Jdserra replied to afriendnwv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 10/24 ...my weight slowed down to almost none the past two weeks. Sw235 Cw185. I started boot camp two weeks ago. So maybe just gaining muscle. I use GenePro for most of my protein intake since I can't stand shakes. I think we need to start paying more attention to our inches lost at this point. Syntrax nectar Protein shake in the Cookies n Cream flavor mixed with Fairlife milk is awesome. And GENEPRO added to broth is also amazing (and can yield 30g of protein in only 4 oz of broth)

I hate all of the Protein powders! H.A.T.E. them! I just ordered GENEPRO on Amazon... hoping for the best. I'm three months out and starting to have hair loss... because I haven't been getting in the protein. Hoping that this one does the trick. I have a vast collection of protein powders right now. None of them are tolerable. I have started forcing them down and am having very unpleasant run to the ladies room episodes. It's not just my palate that doesn't like that Damn Protein! Disclaimer: I haven't been tracking my foods, and I'm getting back on track with that too. It seems impossible to get enough protein just from food when I get full on such a small amount, but I'm sure I can get there.

There are a few brands of Greek, Icelandic, or Bulgarian yogurt that are high in protein, low in carbs, and tasty. Fage is readily available at most grocery stores and Target. Trader Joe's has a plain Greek yogurt that is excellent, but you have to be careful to check the labels and make sure you're picking up the right one because they make several, and some don't have as favorable protein to carb ratios. Plain, unsweetened kefir also makes a good base, as does Fairlife milk which is higher in protein than most other brands. I began making smoothies using a high-protein dairy as a base with some lower-carb frozen fruit like raspberries. Acai is also lovely. Del Monte has no sugar added fresh peach cups that only have 12 carbs and are excellent in smoothies. Trader Joe's makes frozen sweet potatoes cubes that actually have less carbs than fruit, and I'll add a couple of them to a smoothie with milk and cinnamon. I also have made smoothies using unsweetened cocoa, PB2 or Peanut Butter, ice, and high-protein milk. Dr. Matthew Weiner is a bariatric surgeon who has recommended the "set point smoothies" to patients. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MxZYAwzPuk When I was really struggling to meet my protein goals, GENEPRO gave me a boost. It is flavorless, odorless, and dissolves very well into hot or cold liquids, as well as into applesauce, yogurt, soup, and the like. Some are rightfully dubious about the claims that it has 30 grams of protein for a tiny serving, and I wouldn't recommend it as a primary source of protein. I only used it for supplemental purposes. I cannot have whey protein, and most plant-based Proteins were unpalatable to me. You can buy it on Amazon. I love Dr. Weiner's videos. I thought I'd watched all of them, but I missed this one! I'm definitely going to try his smoothie recipe. Thanks for posting that!

I still mix GENEPRO Protein into my coffee every morning for 30 G of protein and I am 9 months out. It's a good CYA just in case I don't get it in with all my food. I also don't like most of the protein shakes or bars. I do like the Powercrunch bars. Good luck- LA

Add unflavored protein mix to your broth. I get mine at GNC. Genepro micronized protein. It dissolves very easy because it's very fine. The protein shakes are driving me crazy, I am going to go postal/Facebook soon. Do not buy vanilla flavored premier protein shakes. Trust mem Sent from my XT1609 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi - I am 6 days post op. I am in phase 2 of eating where i am ok to eat soups, jello, yogurt, etc.. but I'm supposed to be getting 64g of protein per day. My problem is that i can't tolerate any sugar substitutes. I am really struggling with things i can eat (drink) that are high in protein but don't have any fake sugar substitutes. I have tried the GenePro tasteless protein powder as well and couldn't keep that down either. Does anyone have any other suggestions of foods/drinks to try that do not have sugar substitutes but are high in protein? There is only so much plain yogurt, tea, broth etc... i can take in and am no where near the protein goal with those options. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I also liked the Premier Clear (20 grams of protein) prior, but found them too sweet after and had to water them down. I also liked Swanson Sipping Bone Broths (9 grams of protein and 45 calories) for a non-sweet option. For protein powders I use Genepro, it is a smaller scoop and seemed easier to blend without clumps into my soups, broths and tea. Make sure and mix it into a cold/cool liquid and add to anything heated. I have also added it to sugar free jello for protein jello shots. Good luck!!

GenePro GEN2 - is anyone using it?
kovab72 replied to chuswysly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use it, haven't noticed a smell and definitely hasn't changed the taste of any of my food. I was only getting 30 grams of Protein a day until i started using the GENEPRO. Now I meet my 90gram goal with no problem. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App -
Biochem natural whey protein

I've heard GENEPRO is very good. -
Sounds like you've had a really rough time. Well, the food fear I completely get. I've had similar problems trying to find foods I can eat that won't make me sick. Honestly, Genepro protein powder mixed with crystal light, Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, and popcorn (of all things) are about the only things that are consistently ok for me to eat without fear. I am 100% compliant on my vitamins, and have added extra just to make sure I don't end up with deficiencies. If you need to get your calories up I would stick to slider foods - shakes made with protein powder, yogurt, avocado (if you're ok with that). Up the fat IF YOU CAN - sometimes I have a lot of problems with fat so your mileage may vary. Add in some carbs if you can, normally they make me horribly sick and I seriously feel ill just thinking about ice cream/cookies/cake. As for social situations, I go, but I eat nothing at all. It was really weird at first but it makes it easier then feeling anxiety the whole time worrying if I can eat something or if it is going to make me sick. Just keep a glass in your hand and most people don't really notice. I just don't think of food as something that is pleasurable anymore. Maybe that's for the better? I would obsess over meal plans for the week like it was some kind of special project. Now I not only don't care about food but also have to force myself to eat. I'm starting to be ok with that, it's just the way things are now. Instead of thinking about food I've gone back to school while still working full time. Staying busy helps me not overthink things and get depressed about it.

Pureed food stage
sasharbinx replied to HeidiSue2009's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just bought my first unflavored protein -- went with GENEPRO from Amazon. Still waiting on it to arrive. Hope it's good! -
There is a difference between unflavored and flavorless. Unflavored only means that there is no flavoring added to cover the natural flavor of whatever protein they are selling. Flavorless is just about unobtainable unless you look at Genepro which is snakeoil. Totally worthless BS from an unreputable company. But it mixes well and has no flavor, so many people buy it.

My first day mushie/soft - i was petrified
trekker954 replied to trekker954's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I ninjaed the chicken chili and while that first taste was delicious, common sense told me it was too spicey for my delicate tummy and gave it to my husband. I had hummas mixed with GENEPRO instead which was fine too. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App -
Isopure unflavored protein tips
shedo82773 replied to Rose400491's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Before you buy this be sure to check in with your Dr or Nutritionist. But...I a huge coffee drinker for sure. BTW BariatricPal Store has a new product, it is NO ACID COFFEE Even my hubby likes it. LOL So back to unflavored Protein: I put GENEPRO in my Espresso every day. No taste at all. Win-win for me!!! It definitely has no taste at all. I tried ISOPURE and personally, it was so gross!! I commend anyone that can drink it!! GROSS!! I tried a protein unflavored called PROTEINEX!! According to my DR. that is why I ordered it. He was wrong!! -
Where do I get genepro?

unflavored protein powder
Sherrie Scharbrough replied to Soni572's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Also I forgot to say...they sell GENEPRO at the BariatricPal store. If it was so bad for us would they be selling it? Just another thought. -
Stenochick, yes the Protein powders are yuck now. The only one I can consistently drink is skim +carnation SF+ GENEPRO unflavored. Sometimes you need to just take it easy.
