Menstruation

I have the opposite problem. I haven't had a period for the past 4 years (thanks to my IUD) and then all of a sudden I get it 3 weeks after surgery. I freaked out bc it's been so long since I've gotten a period. Hoping I go back to my normal soon.

December 2019 Sleeves

Hi friends!! I had my sleeve surgery 12-27-19. Pre-surgical weight 260. Weight today, almost 4 weeks out 238. It's been quite a ride. My husband had the sleeve 18 months ago, so he was helpful with my lovenox shots, wound care, etc.. What I was not expecting is how sad I feel, tired bc of the insomnia, worried that I am not losing enough even though my surgeon says I am doing great, and the food struggle. I do understand how you felt djgirl. Everyone else is eating whatever the eff they want and I am drinking my shake, eating oatmeal , whatever. I am hoping that this plateau I've hit will run its course bc its frustrating. Next week I can go back to the gym, so I will start out with the treadmill and eventually do some weights, situps etc.. I would like to know what healthy options everyone is eating? Thanks! Meg

February 2019 weight loss buds

This is wonderful! I’ll be honest and admit that I still very much feel like a bariatric patient. I too don’t eat all of the food that I prep and log, so even though my logs say one thing, the truth of the matter is that many times I’m eating 3/4-7/8 of the food I’m packing and logging. I wish MFP had an option where you could just autocorrect the calories and macros down by 10-20% across the board bc then that would be a lot more accurate. My carb struggle is a very real and daily thing. Yesterday I logged over 40gm and it felt very odd and reflexively I wanted to cut back today to “make up” for it. Gotta get over that mindset bc I’m in the high 130’s and I don’t want to slide too much farther down. It’s a mind game. I’m wondering what on earth my subconscious is doing , and I’m working on working through it.

February 2019 weight loss buds

Okay, so I discovered these a few months ago: The multi ones are awesome bc you have to take 6 daily. I like it bc I can divide it up into 3x daily and it isn’t as concentrated and therefore doesn’t upset my sleeve. The iron has vit C with it, which is critical for absorption. 3 daily is the dose and I take them with food (but not with dairy) Then of course is the generic Miralax. I mix 1 scoop in my morning bottle of water and sometimes I need to mix a second if I get behind. These 3 things I do religiously every single day. It took awhile to build that habit, but it’s totally worth it

OOTD

Kay, so heading back out to work soon, but I finished a challenge at the Pilates studio. 20 classes in 20 days. Lol, I finished in 17 days bc we are going out of town for the weekend tomorrow. Lately this has been my look. Not glamorous, and definitely no lipstick, but effective. I’ve really noticed more muscle definition in the last 3 weeks and I’m loving it!

I have many trigger foods. Some are triggers for “just” a few hours, and some I’ll probably never have again bc I don’t know how much I’ll be able to trust myself. Wine and clear spirits slightly trigger my hunger, but any kind of mixed drink with sugars completely turns on my “I need salty, crunchy food and I NEED IT NOW!!!” cycle. When I indulge in wine, I make sure I also have high fat, low carb options like mixed meats and cheeses, Parmesan chips, and some nuts on hand. The fat fills me up and it’s quite savory. The nuts and park chips are for when I need a bit of “crunch” Because these items are low-ish in sugars, the cycle doesn’t escalate. I’ve had bread like twice in the last year: once was when I was out traveling and the sammie I ordered was literally falling apart without the bread to hold it together (I was driving, had no option) and the other was when I stole a bite of my husbands dinner roll at dinner. Promptly spat out half of it bc it tasted so nasty. I’m counting myself lucky on this, but I’m under no illusion: I’m convinced that if I were to regularly try out bread, my aversion to it might fade or even go away and I don’t want that. Therefore I won’t even go there. Last fall at a football tailgate, I did have a bit of ruffles and French onion dip and it completely made me lose control for a few hours (I was also drinking at this event). Salty, carby, crunchy things are my kryptonite so I will indulge with caution and the knowledge that If I do, then I’ll prolly need to fast for at least 16-18 hours the next day to detox. Strangely, I can walk right on by cookies, cake, pie, candy and it’s no prob. I had a half-slice chocolate mousse pie for Christmas (my all-time fave) and it was “meh”. However, after having it, I was craving the savory crunchy so I know the sugars turned on my lizard brain. At the end of the day, so not worth it IMO
8. I had my surgery 12/10/19 and I have lots of temptations and I've slipped up bc food kinda was an addiction for me and I "quit cold turkey" and the diet planning is hard when you live on a budget. Anyone have any ideas on which brands or food are good bc I've run out of protein shakes so I may not be getting enough not sure but overall it's still successful I've lost 34 lbs since then and don't need to take blood pressure pills or diabetic medicine so that's pretty cool to me Sent from my Z557BL using BariatricPal mobile app

Are y'all like this?

Nope. Before surgery I was obsessed with food and eating and eating large volumes. Now, I do 2 no-brainer 5 minute meals...snacks as needed. And then an easy dinner. I usually cook the protein 1-2x for the week and then morph dinners into lucky leftovers. So meals are like 10-15 minutes from fridge to table for 2. If I'm not hungry, I skip whatever meal was planned and move along little dogey. Example: B1 - Protein Latte x 3 (cuz it's mah jam and I love it) Breakfast - Egg/ham/light cheese/salsa steamed egg (<5mins total prep and cooking) Lunch - Turkey Cheese Wrap with arugula, po, rbp and WF Italian dressing + baby carrots or grape toms Dinner - Made IP French Chicken last week and also have leftover enchilada sauce, so this week am making Tex-Mex Chicken Lasagna Boats with mixed salad side. BS - Protein banana puddin' if needed.

Embrace the Stall

So this is something I think some of you might be interested in: I had 3 major stalls in my first 10 months PO. In spite of that, I managed to hit GW in my 8th month. Then at 10 months out (which was during the holidays) I found myself at the same weight for a month and I was thinking I was in maintenance. I was 5-7 pounds BELOW GW, so the maintain didn’t bother me. I put my scale away bc I wanted to just enjoy my new body and lifestyle and told myself I’d use how my clothes fit as a guide. Then about 2 weeks ago I was taking a selfie and noticed my clothes were baggier than I remembered. Got on the scale and was shocked to discover another 6 pound loss. During that 3-4 week period of time, I ate and drank with reckless abandon. I most surely didn’t “earn” that 6 pound drop. And since then I’ve dropped another 2 pounds while trying to INCREASE my calories. Stalls are weird and they can take you by surprise. That last one disguised itself as maintenance.
12. Slimming Down Steve

21 DAYS SINCE MY RNY AND MY SURGEON CLEARED ME TO EAT WHAT I WANT.

I personally wasn't loosing weight till I took my calories from 600 to 800 calories a day then finally the scale started sliding down. As far as salty, I make my own smoked beef jerky so the salt content is minimal compared to store bought jerky. I still have a lot of muscle mass under my fat layer, it needs to be fed also so I can keep it. I dropped 57lbs or so before surgery. So what I'm doing is working for me and my surgeon. Everyone is different.
13. It is such a personal experience and very personal business. I have been living a very healthy life and eating less, drinking my protein shakes and etc. In my office we have maybe 6 wls employees, 2 in my immediate work area that tells everyone all of their business and displays all of their equally bad dietary habits. All of that to say, my coworkers have even more to say because they interact with those 2 and have first hand knowledge of what the process looks like. As much as those 2 get on my nerves, it annoys me to hear people say, "they took the easy way out!" or "you're not losing weight the lazy way like them!!!" I always have to stop those people from spreading false information and for not understanding that isn't easy. To add insult to injury, it's generally another obese person speaking ill of another obese person. Enough of my rant, that just takes me there with anyone. If it were easy, we wouldn't be plagued with an alarming rate of obesity. Getting back to my point, I've observed my Assistant monitoring my trash and asking me if I've been eating, (wth), staff yelling out she can't eat like us (because I decline), oh you think your cute in your clothes, why are you dressing up everyday, you can't possibly wear that size with all of that rump back there (and took her hand and tapped me on my butt), your getting thin ( I'm not even sleeved yet) being out sick for a few days is good for you--because you've slimmed down and the last one...your slimming down, you can at least say thank you (I didn't ask for a compliment, but thanks) ....This is all just coming from my immediate work area and a small group of women. I will not share my wls with these gossipy mean hens. They are going to speculate and talk crap about me either way, so have it. I have so many other things to contend with in life. I love myself, I'm at peace with my decision and I don't have space in my realm for BS. This is just the people who I work with, I haven't even shared the beliefs from some of my friends, family and guy friends and their negative views regarding wls. I have one life, one chance and I choose me.💜 How does everyone deal with the chaos or the reactions when people first see you who don't know you've had wls?
14. ** Irrational Vent Alert ** So, am gonna be 1 month post op tomorrow and figured it was a good time to frustrate and annoy myself by taking out the measuring tape that I'm supposed to be leaving in the drawer. I mean I've been in a good mood for too long, right? Geez. 🙄 The two areas that have been the bane of my existence since PS are my waist and upper thighs. And measuring them this morning fed (irrational) fuel to the fire. My waist continues to be bigger than pre-op. While it has de-swelled by 4 inches since the highest measurement, it continues to be bigger than pre-op and won't allow me to button up my pants comfortably. I am sick of wearing leggings and joggers, with a special hatred of the leggings due to my swollen abdomen poking out giving me a pregnant look from the side....which gets worse when I have food in my stomach. And my effing thighs are getting BIGGER. I measured +1" a week after surgery, and this morning its up another inch. WTF. I am telling myself its because my swelling is moving downwards. That makes sense, right????? Though I think the TT itself may be partly the cause of the initial increase in size: perhaps the thigh "meatiness" moved up as a result of the yank and is now concentrated higher, which makes me think this is not completely a temporary thing. Arg. Anyhoo, @mousecat88, @sillykitty, @okayestmom... how are you finding the progress of the de-swelling in your stomachs? Have you noticed any thigh changes? On another note, have you purposefully adjusted your salt intake during recovery? (am thinking of doing this, but I heart salt...) ...and @catwoman7 : how far along were you when your swelling completely went away? Did you also notice any thigh changes?

Vitamins, gummies and pills. oh my!

Oh I love my hero nutritionals slice of life omega gummies with chia seed, since they are fish free. They taste good too. For now I get them from vitacost.com but the company told me they will be rebranded at the end of 2020. https://www.vitacost.com/hero-nutritionals-slice-of-life-omega-3-with-chia-seed-adult-gummy-vitamins-natural-cran-orange-60-gummies for my multivitamin I need one that’s free of added iodine and I prefer Garden of life my kind organic prenatal multi whole food gummies. (a lot of bariatric people take prenatal vitamins) I did get Garden of life raw one multivitamin capsules this month, I’m not sure I care for them. I guess Since I have some bloodwork due for a surgeon follow up I’ll find out how my levels are. But my throat has been having problems (likely not related to surgery) the gummies are easier in that regard. And I believe whole food based and chewable or liquid absorb better. For hair skin and nails I like natures way alive hair skin and nails with collagen (300mg) gummies. They also make a calcium but I got a tablet from target, I guess I’ll find out how effective it is comparatively. You are correct about vitamin k , I recommend K2 as Menaquinone MK-7. I buy these sublingual for my mom https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VXDXXM0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 You might want to add in coenzyme Q10 as it’s extremely beneficial. I also take digestive enzymes with meals. For anyone who takes probiotics don’t forget that healthy gut bacteria needs to be fed with prebiotic fiber (inulin) or prebiotic foods. Chicory root is the best source of prebiotics. Some other sources are Apple pectin, konjac root aka glucomannan (you can buy shiritaki noodles made of this) as well as flaxseed and others I can’t think of at the moment. Better than rice is a rice alternative and good source of prebiotics. Cooked right it tastes great. https://www.vitacost.com/better-than-rice-organic-konnyaku-flour-organic-oat-fiber-rice-gluten-free?ta=better+than+rice&t=better+than+rice
16. I apparently have an unusual insurance question on my hands because my insurance company doesn’t seem to be understanding my question. For surgery approval, I am required to do six months of weight loss appointments with my general practitioner. At my initial consultation my bariatric surgeon told me to be very careful with how I do my six months of appointments because he’s had patients mess up and not get approved because of the how they did their 6 months due to their insurance companies being very strict. What I’m wanting to know is do my appointments need to be spread out 30 days apart, which is going to be really hard to do with my doctors busy schedule, or can they just be once a month without regard to the number of days in between? All of my appointments are pretty much at least 20 days apart except for one appointment that’s I think 17 days apart. I did reach out to my surgeons office first but was told that I need to contact the insurance company to find that particular detail out and when I call them I get the runaround. I have Anthem BC/BS. I’m sorry if this is a really stupid question. I’m terrified of messing this up!
17. My opinion being unsolicited bc Im VSG, I’m still commenting. Dumping aside, just stomach real estate considered, at 7 months I don’t suspect I will ever eat a plate of spaghetti again. And I’m glad. I didn’t do this so I could go back to eating that much. I can have a bite or two at this point and be very satisfied and full but not “sick.” I can’t speak to “dumping” but I do get pretty ill from sugar. I used edamame pasta last time I made spaghetti and I liked it. Everyone else tolerated it🤣

Dehydrated fruit...how is that diff from dried fruit? I’m curious bc I’ve heard that dried fruit is full of sugar.

Cold 🥶 Feet 😬

I have had two c sections first one was an emergency and it was a little painful than the second so hopefully this surgery goes just like my past surgery’s. No complications and little pain. I guess I’m also scared because I saw a video about skipping vitamins causing tooth loss and brittle bones, this also got me bc I’m not good at taking meds/vitamins. I’m forgetful. I appreciate all the support!

THE SLOW LOSERS CLUB SUPPORT THREAD

I hear you. I think the best advice - knowing everyones body is very different of course - I have seen /used to break a stall is Intermittent Fasting, Upping my water and protein, lowering carbs below 30 (sometimes even KETO so more healthy fats) and if say you have been really low on calories I just upped mine and the scale moved again. Which really messes with your head. Or at least it did mine. I have PCOS, I am insulin resistant, I have endometriosis AND I am hypothyroid all four which just make me a slower loser. Its hard to wrap your head around the fact that sometimes you need more CARBS or Calories to get the scale to move... I just keep ploughing forward and then if I stall- which is ALOT- i try to mix it up. And I am here for encouragement and i hope others are too vs casting blame or suspicions on others. Life is too short for the BS and negativity. Some people get dealt a crappier hand and its okay to get bummed out by that because you are human and have good days and bad days and thats OK. I tend to be very glass half full but every once in a blue moon I get frustrated and its okay to feel that way because thats how you move through the emotion to a better place. At the end of the day i am still going to wake up and try. I ran into my old trainer the other day at the gym (she left to go to law school) and she was blown away with how much I have lost and how I look and she texted me after and said I am so proud of you for never giving up because i know all of your health issues and how hard you work but you never ever give up and you should be proud of yourself. I say this because its a good reminder that waking up every day and trying sometimes is the biggest win of all. And there is no crime in encouraging people... That said i know for a fact I have stalled more than a week and it had nothing to do with calories. My surgeon and my Drs all attribute that to the above mentioned medical issues I have. But I can only speak to my body as you can only speak to yours. And to other we should speak with the kindness we wish to get in return. Life is too short for anything else.

1.5 years out & still throwing up?

So I’m now 3 days out from reparative surgery. My surgeon removed scar tissue and converted to a RNY Bypass bc he was not sure he could straighten out my sleeve enough. He also repaired my hiatal hernia. Said he removed a “ball of tissue & mesh.” 😳😳😳 He did say repairs fail sometimes bc that was from my previous hiatal hernia repair. This surgery I got to stay in the hospital for a night. It was great to be supported as I started healing & drinking water. I’m also home with a drain (kinda gross) which he does for any revision. Everything looks good though. Drinking my meds & water is already so much easier than recovering from my sleeve! I can tell a huge difference. I do have shoulder pain which they’ve told me is not gas but “positional pain” due to having my arms in one position for the entire 2.5 hour surgery. Thankfully, that means pain killers help. The hospital pushed fentanyl as much as they could once they figured out why I was pretty much screaming in pain. Then I had a morphine button I could push every 7 minutes. I walked a TON in the hospital. When they took me off of the pain meds, I ended up in severe pain again, and they had to give me another dose to make it home. Couldn’t sleep last night but got new pain meds this morning which really help. Would I do it again? Yes. Complications happen. The soreness will decrease. The healing will happen. More weight will come off. It’s going to all be ok. I’m just glad I finally got someone to listen to me.

Surgery without anesthesia

I passed pysch with flying colors. I spoon fed her an epic level of bullshit. Or did you not see that in my personality yet? I have no friends. Surprised? Did you miss the post where I admitted as such?

Home from the Hospital

I’m also day 7 of recovery. The pain WAS horrible. I did wonderful the first five days. Set my timer and everything. Yesterday I transitioned to Full Liquids ie broth, creamy soups, etc. Well, that wasn’t enough for me. I incorporated hummus and Puréed black beans. Well if that isn’t sticking to the rules enough, today I incorporated half cup of purées canned chicken with Light Mayonaise. Went down fine and feeling fine. I feel so angry and frustrated at myself though. 7 days and I’m already breaking rules?? I had Sleeve to RNY conversion bc of horrible GERD. Surgeon ended up removing all of my stomach BUT the pouch bc of all the scar tissue. Shame on me.

3 Month Stall. WTF?!

Yes thanks. I try to fill up on 150-200 calories.cutting the bars in thirds would be 120 calories, and have virtually no mass, so I fed them to the squirrels who ravage our bird feeders.
