    1 year post-op gastric bypass

2 years 8 months out. Doing good. Reached goal last August. I still have in the back of my mind the twenty pound weight gain they say will / can happen at the two or three year mark.. I weigh weekly so I can stay on top of that situation..

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

This is such good news!! my surgeons nurse told me since i'm already approved that weight gain isn't an issue for them. I was stressing over this 6 lb gain since corona-tine. When do you start your pre-op liver shrink diet? I have my pre-op appt on 6/30. It is very nerve wrecking for me at this point. They also did a switcharoo of surgeons on me too. not that I mind but I haven't met this surgeon yet..SO lots of nerves here too

    Protein bars

Sure you can eat them, but in the interest of health and weight loss (as well as maintenance), it's always best to rely on real, whole foods: snacks like tuna, avocado, nuts, eggs, lightly roasted chickpeas, plain Greek yoghurt (or pudding made from plain Greek yoghurt mixed with protein powder), etc. Most protein bars are essentially candy bars: they're ultra processed, high in calories, low in vitamins and minerals, often high in sugars and/or fats and salt, and most are full of sugar alcohols that can cause stalls and even weight gain for people trying to lose weight. If you read around this forum and on other weight loss and WLS forums, you'll find that they're also a "slippery slope" for some in that they can lead to pretty intense cravings for bad carbs. The only thing that really separates them from candy bars is protein content. If you're craving a treat but would like to combine it with a quick hit of protein, it's very easy to make your own protein bars or balls. There are loads of recipes online; just search around for the healthier ones that don’t contain added fats and oils, added sugars including dates or dried fruits, etc. They take only a few minutes to make, and the nutritional profile is far healthier than any of the commercially made ones.

    Carb Amount?

The only thing I count is protein. Although, when I look at a label I will look to see if there are a lot of carbs because I definitely found correlation between carbs and weight gain. Don't forget to pay attention to the carb calories that you drink. Good luck!

    Carb Amount?

I'm 16 months out. I started maintenance at about eight months and experimented with different levels of calories and carbs to stop losing weight but avoid gaining. I noticed a direct correlation between more carbs and weight gain, more than calories. When I got about seven pounds above my goal, I started limiting carbs to the extent possible. Since then, I've stayed at my goal weight for about six months. The bottom line: 20g of carbs is great during weight loss but very unrealistic during maintenance. I avoid carbs where possible, but I probably get about 40g per day, which has enabled me to stay at my goal weight. It would be difficult to go much lower than that while trying to eat "normally." (I'm at about 1,600-1,800 calories per day as well.)

    6 Month Pre-Op Diet Question

I have to think your time counts lose or gain. I would hope that weight gain would be at the surgeon’s discretion as you will have fulfilled the insurance obligation. I am right with you, nothing but a significant weight loss is going to change my health issues. I am also a nurse (assuming that is what your name implies) 😊. It is so frustrating that insurance is always driving health care instead of medical need. i hope everything works out for you, @NurseJaci13! I am just hoping this new wave of COVID cases doesn’t hijack my surgery date again. I gained about 7 pounds when my first date was canceled🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

    6 Month Pre-Op Diet Question

As far as I can tell they don't really care if I gain or lose, at least from what my BRS nurse said. It's more about the "education" I receive. I'm more concerned that they will think I gained on purpose to get over 40, which I didn't. I also have to be over 40 or be over 35 and have co-morbidities @WishMeSmaller and I agree. I'm only 5' 3" so a pretty small weight gain or loss changes my BMI but 5-10 pounds doesn't really change my health issues. I don't think my doctor even cares that much. They want you to meet with a nutritionist twice before surgery and do two psych evals, but they don't have a minimum time to do it in. They will get you in as quickly as you meet those two requirements and insurance approves. I was just wondering if anyone else had this situation.

    June 2020 surgeries

I had my final class today and my pre-op testing. i just have an echo to get done tomorrow (born w/heart valve issue & they want me to be cleared for surgery) and then the covid on sun then my surgery next wed. i've gained some weight since covid (stress/hopelessness/depression) and my doc said no more weight gain from here until my surgery next wednesday or she'll cancel it. i get it, but i plan to start my liquid diet earlier (just bought a bunch of protein drinks/crystal light/jello from walmart to pick up tomorrow) and plan to walk 2x a day w/my dog if i can. a mile each time, more if i can swing it in w/my work schedule and appointments. It's gettin' real real ya'll.. i cant' have anyone w/me because of covid (not in the hospital to stay overnight or to visit..) but its ok bc ive been doing this journey by myself (not married/living alone) so it's only appropriate that i do this final step alone.
  10. I read this and kinda laughed at myself. I haven’t had the WLS yet, but I’m already noticing a boost of confidence and seeing myself thinner. Not crazy, I think I’m skinny, but I’m already identifying with a healthier body. Maybe because I’ve always fluctuated weight, I know what I look like under this weight gain. I feel very relaxed and ready to be the me I see in my head :)
  11. Hello all! I’m very excited to find this forum for questions and support. I started my journey towards WLS in January. My insurance, at that time, required 180 days and 7 dietician visits. I did well with the first 2 dietician visits and the counselors appointment. Then COVID hit. My March appointment was cancelled, and I didn’t hear from my surgery center for a little while. I reached out to them at the end of March to see if I could start virtual visits, and they said that they were transitioning to that. I met my surgeon virtually, and I’ve had 3 virtual dietician appointments. Aetna changed their qualifications for WLS surgery in May, so now I need 12 appointments, but there’s no weight gain rules. The office is having me do 3 appointments a month to try to keep me as close to my original end date as possible. Some things about me: I live outside of St.Louis, Mo, I’m 37, am a mom of 3, 11 yo boy and 9 yo boy/girl twins, I have 4 cats and 2 dogs, all rescues, I’ve been married 13 years and together 16. My family is very supportive of my decision to have surgery. I am 5’10 and 290lbs. I have a few medical issues, but nothing comorbid to my weight, so I cannot lose too much weight before surgery or I will disqualify myself. I’ve been able to lose a little since my first appointment, but they want me to maintain now. I’ve had my upper GI and an abdominal ultrasound to see if I can have my gallbladder removed durning surgery, and it looks like I can, but my surgeon hasn’t confirmed that yet. It is slightly enlarged and I have sludge, so I’d like it gone. Anyways, I’ve rambled long enough. I’m happy to be here, and I look forward to getting to know y’all!

11 years post op. I have gained back half of what I lost. Is there hope to stop the weight gain?
  13. Hi everyone, I'm not usually very good at linking in on forums and other online communities, but I've logged in today for the first time since my roux en y bypass 3 years ago to see if there's anyone that has or is experiencing the same as me. For the first time, I have put on weight and I am so disappointed in myself for letting myself go. I had phenomenal success following my op - I lost around half my body weight: Reducing from 23st 5lbs (327lbs) to 11st 5lbs (159lbs) over 18 months and actually had to eat quite a lot, albeit little and often, in order to keep my weight stable. Since the coronavirus lockdown however I have been non-stop eating and as a result have gained a stone (14lbs). I'm 12at 5lbs (173lbs) now and my clothes are too tight. I can eat normal sized meals and constantly snack. Basically, once whatever I've eaten has digested I'm eating something else. I'm really worried I've stretched my pouch. Can going on a diet cause it to shrink back at all, even just a little? I'm considering a keto diet because I do like high protein and high fat (I'm crazy for butter!). All responses are welcome. Thank you 😊

    I need help

I think Covid has made the "rules" change a bit. From what I'm reading noone's surgery has been canceled due to weight gain lately and several people have posted that they were concerned and then given the go anyway. Best of luck!!

    Can anyone help, or....

@PolahBeou Sorry that you are having issues. At 5'5" and 114Lbs. Your BMI is 19.0 Low end of normal. One more pound will be underweight. You said "So far, every doctor I've visited has recommended more exercise and protein. " Wow, exercise contradicts weight gain. Who are these Dr's? Seek new Dr.s and pressure them. Advocate for yourself until you get the help you need. Suggestions (not medical professional advice) Sop exercising. You are burning calories that your body needs. If your surgery restriction is tight, Eat small meals all day to stop weight loss and gain weight. The only way you gain weight is eating extra calories. (High carb and fat) Try a medical grade weight gaining shake and a Liquid/powdered carbohydrates. look on Amazon or GNC

About the only way you can get revision is serious GERD. But weight gain that soon after sleeve may indicate to some surgeons you aren't ready to undergo another procedure. Check with your bariatric center and see if what you are eating is contributing to weight gain. (are you back to old habits like soda, fast food, junk food, snacking, grazing, etc,). Also be aware that some medications can cause weight gain. Check any meds you take for weight gain as side effect. You need to figure out what is really going on before considering surgery again. With the restriction gone from sleeve, your weight now depends on you and see what you can do to fix problem. Getting regular exercise? Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Welcome! I'm only 3 months out and am still losing, so I can't sympathize with recent weight gain. But I am definitely upset that my apartment building closed the gym! So glad it's finally summer here in Canada so at least I can go for pleasant walks.
  18. Hello Group! Today is my first day here onsite. I started my lifestyle change on 3/9/2009 when I had my WLS-Lapband. I went through some immediate results but 6 years later I developed an erosion in the mouth of the stomach that caused my tool to be removed. I experienced a rapid weight gain! On April 19 2016, my surgeon revisited my case and I was approved for a revision. We agreed on the Gastric Bypass. The surgery went well. I take my vitamins, eat right etc. On august 16, 2019 I underwent the Panniculectomy surgery which went very well. The recovery process was about a month. I am very happy with the results. Now, what I am currently experiencing is the UPs and Downs of weight loss and weight gain due to the unprecedented times we are experiencing and the challenges we faces each day. In March 2020, I was required to work from home which was great but the exercising has been limited. OMG how I miss the gym... I visited my nutritionist and she recommended I join this website for some guidance, support or even a fruitful tip that can keep me motivated. I do not wish to go backwards, I want to continue losing and I just seem to have lost sight. HELP
  19. To each their own. One person's "rush" is another person's lifetime. I booked my PS consults ONE WEEK after reaching goal weight (7 months after WLS). Had the actual PS surgeries 7 months later, (14 months after WLS)...and only because it was the earliest he could get me on his schedule. He (nor the other 3 surgeons I consulted with) had any time requirement to be at a stable weight. In fact, I lost another 12 lbs by the time surgery came around. At the time, my surgeon seemed to be more concerned about further weight loss after surgery than weight gain, at least in theoretical terms of how the skin at the the incision lines *may* have an undesirable "pucker" look depending on how your the scars heal. He said a 10lb loss would probably have more undesirable look-effects than a 20lb gain...but again depending on how your scars heal. In terms of weight gain, he said possible effects would be widening of scars (again depending on how you heal, AND how much you gain). I figure if I gain or lose weight in the future, and don't like how it looks, then I will do whatever I am prepared to do at that time to address it then. Maybe I'll have to re-tool my diet/exercise to "re-fit" my skin, maybe I'll have another surgery, maybe I won't care. But TODAY, I am completely and totally happy with my decision to get what I got and the timeline it was performed. Bring on bikini season!!! Do what makes YOU happy and what is in your means to do so. Good Luck! P.S. I am really excited for you though...PS is a GAME CHANGER.
  20. yes - it would be a huge mistake not to wait. A vast majority of people put on 10-20 lbs after hitting their lowest weight. You really need to be at your final weight - and stay there for a few months - before investing in plastic surgery. A weight gain or loss of more than 10 lbs or so will affect your results.

    June 2020 surgeries

Oh, and I'm scheduled for 6/17. (RNY - was gonna do sleeve but I decided on the RNY after talking a lot with my nutritionist and doing research) Was supposed to be May 4th, but was postponed due to COVID-19. I was feeling pretty hopeless that entire month and a half when it was cancelled (cancelled late march..), so I gained some weight. Luckily, my surgeon said no more weight gain and we can still do the surgery. My insurance doesn't have any requirements but the 6 month weigh ins. I'm 16 days away and I"m pushing myself with eating more veggies, more protein and drinking more water. It's stuff I've done before, because I lost ~80lbs on Keto a year and some change ago, but gained it all back. I figured this time, I can do all those changes I made w/keto, and the new tool of the surgery and I should be set. 🤞
  22. "...data in both animal models and humans suggest that the effects of artificial sweeteners may contribute to metabolic syndrome and the obesity epidemic. Artificial sweeteners appear to change the host microbiome, lead to decreased satiety, and alter glucose homeostasis, and are associated with increased caloric consumption and weight gain." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29159583/ Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Impatient- I hate the unknown.

I dont. I've been camera shy the past few years because of the weight gain. So I dont have an insta. But yes. That stuff really rewlly works. Its funny because my boyfriend thinks I have powers because everything I want i usually get. When I put my mind to it. Lol. Maybe we will be July surgery buddies!
  24. At 10+ years post op I'm also battling ups and downs. My story is different from yours but the bottom line is getting rid of the excess weight. Have you considered options besides revision surgery? I'm likely covered for revision despite relatively low regain due to other health issues. You may improve your chances of approval by focusing on co morbidities caused by regain. A revision would be successful, but until I live differently I may face the same situation in another 10 years. My BEHAVIOR caused my weight gain. INTERMITTENT FASTING is helping me control this need to be full. I'm training my body and brain to understand that feeling hunger is not the same as starvation. It is helping me to drop the pounds and revise my attitude towards food. Jason Fung (search YouTube and online) and others have been my guides. My desire to be full is my eating disorder. Fasting helps me to focus on nutrition and understand when I need to eat vs when I want to eat. As an advocate of health at any size, my diet for life keeps me in good health. Periodically I tweak my program because of metabolism issues. When I stay with my program I maintainin. When I slip from my program the need to get full emerges. Diets to reset my pouch as someone already suggested work well for me. However, eventually I want to feel fullness again and I'm attempting to reset more and more often. This is why I'm working to become content with an empty belly and a well nourished body. I wish you successful weight loss and good health however you decide to accomplish your goals.
  25. Congrats to you! The key to managing weight gain is staying alert to it and having a workable plan. Seems like you have this in hand. I'm also 10+ years out and living through the ups and downs. My salvation has been shopping with a tape measure to ensure I never buy a larger size. Vanity also helps. I prefer the best quality I can afford over quantity. When the pounds pile on I cringe in the mirror and deal with it. Looking like all hell is breaking loose and having limited use of my wardrobe is motivating.
