  1. Hi future friends! I don’t have my surgery date scheduled yet, but I’ve got most of my ducks in a row, and just waiting to hear back from insurance on when my sleeve date will be! I’ve read so many inspiring stories and seen so many of you share your before and after pictures, that I must say I am blessed to have found such an authentic and supportive group to go through this journey with! My story is pretty common as far as up and down weight gain since childhood, post-baby weight gain, etc. Then, 3 years ago, PLOT TWIST! One day I couldn’t walk or use my legs. We thought it was Lymes Disease, and it took over a year to figure out it was Fibromyalgia. Then, it took another year to get the right medications to bring the pain levels down. I’ve come very far, but still have to use a powered wheelchair for any walking or standing longer than 10-15 minutes and tire extremely easily. Of course being immobile and on MANY weight gaining medications pushed me right into the MO category super fast! My hope after sleeve surgery is to be able to be more mobile and finally feel like myself again. I would love any stories of anyone else’s journey! Remember my friend, Your weight may fluctuate...     From what my insurance says for revision due to weight gain, it must be over 2 years since first surgery, and less than 50% excess body weight loss, and following the nutrition guidelines for weight loss since the operation. Good luck!!
  4. hello there just doing my monthly check in for those who are interested. So it's officially 8 months since I had my RNY BYPASS surgery. My journey has been good. Started high weight of 322lbs and I've been in maintenance now 2 months. I sit consistently around 165LBS most days but my lowest recent weight was 163lbs. I have definitely been enjoying alot more variety in my diet since maintenance began and I can tolerate most foods but still use shakes if needed. I am now consuming around 1500kcal most days even a few treats here and there without any side effects or weight gain. I'm feeling amazing and looking good. I'll be 36 in about 5 weeks but feel healthier than I have in 20 years!!! I am glad I did the right research and chose the BYPASS as my first and only surgery and I'm amazed how well I've done. never ever expected to lose 100% EBW but I've done it and my surgeon says I'm an anomaly only about 5% of his patients ever lose that much 😊 I know it's only early days and things might change in regards to malabsorption of calories and such but I'll be sure to keep an eye on my weight for the long term. I just want everyone to see it is possible to be successful and reach all your goals. you just have to be 150% focused on your goals from day 1. Thank you all and I'll appreciate any comments. Mike
  5. I have not been on here in years but don’t know where to go for help. I had the sleeve on 6-10-13 I lost 135 pounds and was extremely happy with the results over the years I was able to maintain and would go up and down a little but stayed within 10 pounds of my lowest weight of 140. Then COVID hit and now I am working from home and don’t get out much and I am weighing in at 180. I am terrified to gain my weight back and can already feel it in my joints and such just the weight I put on. I can’t seem to get back on track. I need any ideas/tips that anyone can offer. Someone that has gone though a weight gain of 40 lbs and got it back off. thanks
  6. I'm a former bander too. It caused all kinds of problems and then the weight gain. I had my sleeve done about a year ago and love it. I knew how to eat and what to do it was like riding a bike. I'm really happy now! Good luck on your journey!
  7. I am on Medicare and also had my sleeve in 2017. I did not have to do any of the stuff I did the first time they just scheduled my surgery. I also was at original goal so if you have weight gain ect I am not sure how that would work. BTW I still have acid a month out of revision and I am not the only one their are others in this forum that still have it after revision. Good luck.

    Anxious to hear how Old Profile's surgery went. I am meeting with my surgeon next week to discuss bypass revision surgery for fixing GERD, hiatal hernia, and had weight gain after sleeve. Best of luck to you!!

    June Sleevers Post Op

    I had my surgery 6/8 as well and everything went well I spent two days in the hospital because I wasn’t taking in enough liquid. The first week out the weight was falling off I was down 17.5lbs fast forward to last week and I gain two pounds. What is going on? I feel like did my surgery not work? Why am I gaining weight? On top of that here’s a list of things I’ve experienced after surgery. Burning in my lower abdomen from the blood thinner shot, gas and burping, weird stomach noises, itchy incisions😩, a yeast infection from the meds they gave me in the hospital😫oh and did I mention WEIGHT GAIN. The struggles are real. Can someone shed some light on the weight gain?

    Revision sleeve to bypass

    I am getting a revision done this coming Wednesday. What happen was I had my sleeve done in nov 2013 and I did great! But I had very bad heartburn so I started taking nexium daily. In 2016 my surgeon did a hiatal hernia repair. That did not help so I just dealt with it and ended being put on dexilant medication for Gerd. So I had a upper GI and endoscopy and it showed regurgitation and acid reflux . So my doctor sent everything over to blue shield of California PPO. And it was authorized by them . My surgery was supposed to Take place April 8, 2020 but had to be rescheduled because of the coronavirus. So my new date is this coming Wednesday, June 24 and I got my clearance and I even had the Covid test last Thursday so I’ve been quarantine till Wednesday. I’ve also gained some weight in the last two years so this should help with my Gerd and weight gain. I’m very nervous but I’ll be so happy to be off the medication for the horrible heartburn.

    Thank you all for the feedback. I think my biggest concern is the idea that it would stretch the new stomach and I would have weight gain. Is this the reason it is prohibited?

    Why is this so hard for me

    Seroquel is usually prescribed for serious psychological conditions, not for sleep. It can cause substantial weight gain in some cases. There is another drug in its class, Latuda, that treats some of the same psychological conditions that Seroquel does but is not associated with weight gain. You may want to ask your doctor whether your condition can be treated with Latuda or another weight-neutral drug.

    Why is this so hard for me

    Lyrica is renowned for increasing your appetite & weight gain. It’s a great medication for nerve pain but ... Your appetite is probably coming back, with the meds contributing, & you may be sub-consciously eating more. It’s easy to do. Check your serving size and if you aren’t counting calories, you may need to give it a go for a couple of weeks. All the best.

    Why is this so hard for me

    Hi again... I see Amlodipine, Seroquel and Lyrica all have weight gain as a side effect. I would definitely meet with Dr. to see if there are other weight friendly substitutions. I recall my surgeon warning against this for the rest of life—-to be sure to ask prescriber for something that won’t make the journey more difficult. Hugs and prayer that answers are right around the corner for you!

    1 year post-op gastric bypass

    2 years 8 months out. Doing good. Reached goal last August. I still have in the back of my mind the twenty pound weight gain they say will / can happen at the two or three year mark.. I weigh weekly so I can stay on top of that situation..

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

    This is such good news!! my surgeons nurse told me since i'm already approved that weight gain isn't an issue for them. I was stressing over this 6 lb gain since corona-tine. When do you start your pre-op liver shrink diet? I have my pre-op appt on 6/30. It is very nerve wrecking for me at this point. They also did a switcharoo of surgeons on me too. not that I mind but I haven't met this surgeon yet..SO lots of nerves here too

    Protein bars

    Sure you can eat them, but in the interest of health and weight loss (as well as maintenance), it's always best to rely on real, whole foods: snacks like tuna, avocado, nuts, eggs, lightly roasted chickpeas, plain Greek yoghurt (or pudding made from plain Greek yoghurt mixed with protein powder), etc. Most protein bars are essentially candy bars: they're ultra processed, high in calories, low in vitamins and minerals, often high in sugars and/or fats and salt, and most are full of sugar alcohols that can cause stalls and even weight gain for people trying to lose weight. If you read around this forum and on other weight loss and WLS forums, you'll find that they're also a "slippery slope" for some in that they can lead to pretty intense cravings for bad carbs. The only thing that really separates them from candy bars is protein content. If you're craving a treat but would like to combine it with a quick hit of protein, it's very easy to make your own protein bars or balls. There are loads of recipes online; just search around for the healthier ones that don’t contain added fats and oils, added sugars including dates or dried fruits, etc. They take only a few minutes to make, and the nutritional profile is far healthier than any of the commercially made ones.

    Carb Amount?

    The only thing I count is protein. Although, when I look at a label I will look to see if there are a lot of carbs because I definitely found correlation between carbs and weight gain. Don't forget to pay attention to the carb calories that you drink. Good luck!

    I'm 16 months out. I started maintenance at about eight months and experimented with different levels of calories and carbs to stop losing weight but avoid gaining. I noticed a direct correlation between more carbs and weight gain, more than calories. When I got about seven pounds above my goal, I started limiting carbs to the extent possible. Since then, I've stayed at my goal weight for about six months. The bottom line: 20g of carbs is great during weight loss but very unrealistic during maintenance. I avoid carbs where possible, but I probably get about 40g per day, which has enabled me to stay at my goal weight. It would be difficult to go much lower than that while trying to eat "normally." (I'm at about 1,600-1,800 calories per day as well.)

    6 Month Pre-Op Diet Question

    I have to think your time counts lose or gain. I would hope that weight gain would be at the surgeon’s discretion as you will have fulfilled the insurance obligation. I am right with you, nothing but a significant weight loss is going to change my health issues. I am also a nurse (assuming that is what your name implies) 😊. It is so frustrating that insurance is always driving health care instead of medical need. i hope everything works out for you, @NurseJaci13! I am just hoping this new wave of COVID cases doesn’t hijack my surgery date again. I gained about 7 pounds when my first date was canceled🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

    6 Month Pre-Op Diet Question

    As far as I can tell they don't really care if I gain or lose, at least from what my BRS nurse said. It's more about the "education" I receive. I'm more concerned that they will think I gained on purpose to get over 40, which I didn't. I also have to be over 40 or be over 35 and have co-morbidities @WishMeSmaller and I agree. I'm only 5' 3" so a pretty small weight gain or loss changes my BMI but 5-10 pounds doesn't really change my health issues. I don't think my doctor even cares that much. They want you to meet with a nutritionist twice before surgery and do two psych evals, but they don't have a minimum time to do it in. They will get you in as quickly as you meet those two requirements and insurance approves. I was just wondering if anyone else had this situation.

    JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS

    I'm on the first day of my liquid diet.. i started a day early bc my surgeon said no more weight gain, whatsoever.. so im hoping that the diet & walking will get me down enough for her to cont with surgery on the day of. im sooo terrified that she'll cancel the morning of and ill get extra disappointed/depressed & won't wanna do the program anymore.. if anyone has any liquid diet tips, pls let me know!!!

    June 2020 surgeries

    I had my final class today and my pre-op testing. i just have an echo to get done tomorrow (born w/heart valve issue & they want me to be cleared for surgery) and then the covid on sun then my surgery next wed. i've gained some weight since covid (stress/hopelessness/depression) and my doc said no more weight gain from here until my surgery next wednesday or she'll cancel it. i get it, but i plan to start my liquid diet earlier (just bought a bunch of protein drinks/crystal light/jello from walmart to pick up tomorrow) and plan to walk 2x a day w/my dog if i can. a mile each time, more if i can swing it in w/my work schedule and appointments. It's gettin' real real ya'll.. i cant' have anyone w/me because of covid (not in the hospital to stay overnight or to visit..) but its ok bc ive been doing this journey by myself (not married/living alone) so it's only appropriate that i do this final step alone.
  25. I read this and kinda laughed at myself. I haven’t had the WLS yet, but I’m already noticing a boost of confidence and seeing myself thinner. Not crazy, I think I’m skinny, but I’m already identifying with a healthier body. Maybe because I’ve always fluctuated weight, I know what I look like under this weight gain. I feel very relaxed and ready to be the me I see in my head :)
