    August Surgery Buddies!

Happy to report since my surgery date on 8/1, it’s 8/15 and I’m down 22lbs. First night in the hospital was brutal getting woken up every couple of hours for vitals and blood work. Not a whole lot of rest. Luckily, I was able to come the next day. Started my liquid diet and haven’t had any issues with any of my “meals”. On week 3 now and introduced an egg and still no issues. Toughest part is still getting in all the water that’s recommended. I hope all you other August surgery buddies are doing well!!

    August surgery buddies!

So, why exactly will you be doing the puree stage for so long? The hospital I went to has the general rule of a liquid diet for two weeks and one week pureed food. If that goes well, you can start eating regular food, but in small amounts. I wonder why it's so different.

    September surgery buddies!!

Forgot to say that I just spent the last few hours making a list of dinners for me and the family to cook for 6 weeks. Its for the 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after my surgery. I want this as easy as possible on me, so for the liquid diet weeks I have the dinners being something I would not want to eat. So hopefully there will be less torture and temptation. That's the goal at least, fingers crossed.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Great to hear from you all! It's so interesting how we have picked such a range of goal weights/BMIs. I am almost exactly 9 months out now, 108lbs lost, BMI is 24.8, still losing about a pound a week and absolutely loving that. Gonna ride this horse as far as it gets me Loving my new life.
  5. Hi! I am 2.5 weeks post VSG. I’m in puréed stage and following everything to a T - HOWEVER, I ate an ounce of hummus that had poppy seeds in it before I realized OMG these are seeds! I told my Dr who told me to watch for fevers etc. But I’m wondering if anyone has done this or similar.
  6. Hi, I'm new here. I joined this forum with the expectation that my surgery was going to be about 10 months from now. I went to the surgeon today and I'm looking at two to three months from now. Which yay?!? I don't have to think about the what if's as long, but now I'm overly anxious about "holy crap, it's so soon I don't have time to prepare". I'm having the bypass which is what I went into the appointment expecting him to say I would need. I'm just nervous and jumping in head first reading all the posts. Thanks for sharing your stories, I didn't want to read them while being a creeper and not sharing mine.

As usual, some people who hit the average swear by it, those that don't ridicule it. I hope EVERYONE draws the appropriate message. If it's not clear, statistics are crap. Here is the truth: A certain percentage (50-60%) hit average loss which is also 70-80% of goal. If you hit that and are happy, more power to you. [ETA: When I started, at my weight, I would have killed to hit average. I would have been fine.] If you're not happy with that, the averages need not have power over you. I lost goal and past goal, through little fault of my own, other than binge running. Anyone, through ridiculous acts or normal behavior can beat the averages. Statistics are lies. HUGE lies. I could post my statistics. Yeah, I have them. But I know they are mine, only mine. And may make a lot of people feel like crap: For 2 reasons: 1) I weighed more that most people here, so my monthly losses seem crazy, not so much for me as others (starting higher and lower) beat me. 2nd, I shot past goal because I was running 90+ miles a week. I couldn't eat enough to stop losing weight. What good does it do anyone here to know? None. Do you. No one here lives you. You may lose little or a lot, I think it's a crap shoot. Just don't compare, that is a losing game. Good luck, Tek

    August surgery buddies!

If I was feeling really poorly, I could just give them my doctor's note and take the whole four weeks off, and nobody could say a thing, But, since I'm not doing that bad, and I'm asking for reduced in-person hours this year due to going to school as well as working full time, I stand a much better chance if I'm there from day one and showing the department head that I'm willing to work.

I like jello … but the artificial sweeteners kill me. First the taste, then digestively. I wish I could find something without aspartame. Erythritol doesn’t seem to bother me as much - but I’m not finding popcicles made with that. The simply delish is the best of the jellos I have found - but pricy. I have some of their pudding to try - when I’m allowed to have it. Once I’m allowed purred fruits, I will make some protein fruit popcicles and gelatin “jello” - but that’s not until week 2 for me.
  10. Congratulations! I'm 8 months out and have only lost 41 lbs. I'm 61. You are doing great! My doctor cleared me on eating everything at 6 weeks out. It's so weird that so many doctor's have such different aftercare directions. I continue to try and eat about 800-1000 calories a day. I have never "dumped" even after eating sweets. I was losing about 5 lbs per month but I've been on a stall for 2 months now. A little frustrating.
  11. I am 3 mos out and had my final nutritionist visit last week. Because I am healed and tolerating the surgery well, she has cleared me (more or less) for juice, soda, alcohol, coffee, etc. - all in MODERATION. I have had small portions of cake, cheesecake, pie, cobbler and candy and have not experienced dumping syndrome. I HAVE had the foamies when eating something either too bulky or taking one or two bites too many. I generally stay between 900-1100 calories per day. I am 62, 50 lbs down and still losing 1-2 lbs per week. EDIT: By "clear", I mean I made her aware that I had consumed this items without any negative consequences and we discussed that I should have no problems if I exercise moderation.

this is all so very interesting! i appreciate all the comments on this thread. I am one month post-op from bypass. I lost about 7 lbs my first week, and nothing since. However my clothes are fitting much better. I had lost 40 lbs prior to surgery, plus 15 lbs on my pre-op diet. So these explanations really are making sense to me now. Thank you!

I'm a teacher too and I totally get what you are saying about it being more stressful to take more time off vs going into work! I'm a teacher so I have to be there when school starts. I hope I get stronger every day, but if not I can have my teaching assistants do a fair amount of work for me for a couple weeks. I think I may have overestimated my recovery rate, but this was the earliest I could get the surgery done, so 2 weeks will have to do!

This exactly my worry. Luckily the kids won’t be back yet for that first week. That’s when it really gets exhausting. Lol.

    August surgery buddies!

Most likely you will feel better and get stronger every day. I was winded after just getting dressed last week, and I'm still a bit winded going up the stairs today, but I'm still heaps better than I was two days ago. So, you may well be perfectly up to going to work in a week's time. If not, is there no way you can get more time off?

    August surgery buddies!

I had my surgery on the 9th, and I went back to work today. My doctor recommended that I take at least two weeks off, and I have a doctor's note for four weeks, but I'm a teacher and this week is the only time we have to prepare before school starts next week. So I went today (at 9, thankfully not at eight) and I ended up staying until 3:45 or the same as everyone else. I was a bit nauseous after lunch (very thin oatmeal) and I had to stand up sometimes during our meetings because I was uncomfortable, plus I was pretty tired when I came home, but in all I'm doing much better than I anticipated. Sure, it would have been nice to have another week to heal, but it would be more stressful for me in the long run to turn up next week unprepared.

    August surgery buddies!

I go back to work next Monday and I'm scared!!! My surgeon wanted me off work until Sept 12th and OMG would that have been amazing! Mostly I'm worried about the fatigue. I am almost 1-week post op and I'm pretty much exhausted all the time. I had my post-op checkup today and by the time I got home I was dragging and needed a nap.

    August surgery buddies!

I'm getting around really well. Last week I walked a mile every morning with small breaks to stop and rest. I was prescribed gabapentin. The one day I took it, I did not feel safe to drive. Except for that I could totally drive now one week post-op!

    August surgery buddies!

I started back to work late last week. I was getting really stir crazy. I actually feel great and am just ready to settle into my new routine. My energy has been up by the end of the day which I was really worried about. I even got some extra steps in last night on the tredmill. Everyone is different in their recovery!

    August surgery buddies!

Yes! I had mine on Monday, Aug 8th and I was back working remotely from home by Friday. By 3pm I was really tired, but I feel like I have much more energy this week.

Half way through the month! Good luck to everyone coming up this week and I hope those who have gone before are having a good recovery! Anyone who already had it already back at work? This has been my biggest worry.

Here is my rate of loss. We are all different. We all hit stalls at different times. Surgery Date was April 18th. and i take measurements and weight on the 4th of every month. So last measurement was August 4th.

    August surgery buddies!

Good luck everyone having surgery this week and speedy recovery to all. Just got my time for tomorrow and my heart jumped into my throat when I saw the hospital name on the caller ID. I have to be at the hospital at 7:30 am … not sure if I’m their first of the day, but at least I’m before lunch… so hopefully by this time tomorrow I am in my room and resting comfortably… or taking a lap. Lol. Deep breaths… calm, relaxing & positive thoughts… 😊

Agree with others. Everyone is different and your body does not work linearly. I mean, I'm no where near goal and I have slowed to a crawl the past two to three months, without changing my eating (might be all the exercise, but hard to know, I'm just keeping on keeping on). Other people with my same stats could be dropping 2 or 3 times the weight I am - until their bodies decide not to and stop. It's not predictable and I find comparing myself to others does nothing helpful or useful.
