  1. I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement to all of you. I've had my Band since 12 Nov 09. I have lost a total of 54 1/2 lbs including (mandatory diet and Pre-op). I have lost on average about 4-5 lbs a month. So, for the most part, I am textbook with the weight-loss. So, though the loss was not fast, it is still coming off and, I am very encouraged. Well, I took my measurements back on 7 Dec 09. I'd completely forgotten about that. I hadn't really checked since then--other than measuring my waist periodically. Shockingly, this is the results: 7 Dec 09 10 July 10 Bust 7 Dec: 47------------ 10 Jul:39 Waist 7 Dec: 48----------- 10 Jul: 35 Hips 7 Dec: 47------------ 10 Jul: 40 Neck 7 Dec:14 1/2--------- 10 Jul: 12 Thigh 26 22 Arms lost 2 inches I know that this is long. But, hopefully it will motivate and encourage someone. Also, I have started jogging. Which has really helped too. Thanks, Brigette

    Ignorant people

LOL Just wait stupid pompous people are all over. Stay focused and remember this visual: People who disagree with my choice of weight loss are like slinkys, let them sit at the top of the stairs and i give it one kick and let it go down the stairs.
  3. I recently had a follow up appointment with my doctor and he said im doing great. As of today I am 5 1/2 months out and have lost 76 lbs. But I told him my weight loss seems to be slowing down. He asked if I am getting my protein, which I am. Then he asked how much I'm exercising to which I responded everyday thinking that it was a great thing but he said no you have to take 2 days a week off from exercise. He said no one should exercise 7 days a week. Muscle is built during rest. He strongly recommend I start strength training. More muscle will speed up my metabolism and help burn fat more efficiently. His advice was that I spend two days of cardio, two days of strength training, and 1 day of interval training with 2 days of rest per week. I haven't strength training before so I set up appointment per his recommendation with a trainer for her to set up a program for me that I could do at home. She was very nice and gave me great advice she said you should never strength train two days in a row. Always drink your protein shakes after you exercise on your strength training days so your body will not take from the muscle you've already built. She also said that my rest days I could practice stretching or I could do yoga or palates if I wanted to do something. So I stared all this 5 days ago and have lost 2.5 lbs since then. I never thought I would say this but I really like the strength training and look forward to learning the palates and yoga. I am learning about my body and I was greatful for all the help and advice so I thought I would share the advice I received. Hope it is helpful to someone.

    Just beginning. . .

Congratulations on your weight loss so far - that's great! I've only been sleeved for 10 days. For me it's not an issue of putting myself first or not - it's that I HATE exercise. I know I have to change this fast if I want to get healthy. I'm open to suggestions as well!
  5. I know that you're really wanting to lose a lot of weight quickly, but I'm worried you're going to beat yourself up and be very negative and frustrated if your weight loss is closer to "normal" than "fast". That being said, I have lost 19.5 in the month since my surgery so I guess that puts me right around the loss range you're wanting. I can tell you what I eat now, but I think the big difference is 1) I didn't have to do any liquid diets pre-op and 2) my diet now is very different than what I used to eat. I don't do eggs so most of the time my breakfast is 1/2 cup of Chobani vanilla Greek yogurt and 1/4 c to 1/2 of Kashi GoLean Cereal (high Protein, high fiber) mixed together. I have tea before that to help open me up and take my meds. For lunch I'll do 3 oz. of canned chicken and a tablespoon or two of low fat mayo mixed together with some spices, and I eat it with 6 or so celery sticks to scoop it up and get that crunch. dinner, I'll measure out 4 oz. of whatever meat my family is having and I'll add a side of veggies. Honestly I'm not a big veggie fan so my veggie intake is pretty limited to salad, celery, fresh salsa, etc. If I'm hungry between meals and can't handle it I'll have a low fat cheese stick. If I want something sweet after dinner I have some Jello Temptations that are 100 calories but usually I'll try to just have a cup of tea or a piece of gum instead. I'm not a person who needs a lot of variety in my menu. I could probably eat the same 5 or 6 meals for a whole week and not really mind. Am I hungry? Heck yes I am. I'm in bandster hell and running on fumes, but each time I get hunger pains I drink a big glass of Water and usually it staves it off a bit.
  6. Ann, your choices for a decent surgeons are Riverside, Orange County and Beverly Hills. I went to Cedars-Sinai and had the best care I've ever had in my life. The drive is horrendous and it requires eight to ten trips. I have a ranch, not too far from you and I did a lot of research before deciding, my doctor's recommendation made up my mind. I don't have any idea what Tricare might do for you, but please find the best surgeon and hospital you can. Not all weight loss facilities are equal so choose wisely. I know I sound preachy, but I hate to see young people get less than the best care possible. If I can be of any possible help, feel free to PM me, and the very best of luck to you.
  7. Well isn't the reason for weight loss to eat healthy and not revert to old ways so sweets are the last thing I'm thinking of

    Unfriendly friends

I remember when my sisters had Thier surgeries one 15 years ago the other 13. I said the same thing that they took the easy way out. And the skin was pretty awful they both look older after the weight loss but Thier loss was extreme as they were very very obese. But boy I was so wrong about it being easy!! And loose skin can be fixed. Your friend just doesn't understand how much harder this is then a diet. I was the same way. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

    One Step Closer

I have on average 5 protein drinks per day (I have to have 100 g a day). I also eat sf Popsicles & fudge pops (my surgon said the fudge pops would be fine, I would check with your surgon) I can also have chicken/beff/veggie broth but it's a lil to salt for me so I don't eat that often. I'm on a 2 week liquid diet & I have lost 15 lbs sine 10/15 for a total pre op weight loss of 50 lbs my surgery is 10/29 & I'm so ready to be on the other side. My best advise is don't try a premix protien & expect the power version to taste the same. I did this with isopure I could tolerate the premix it wasn't to bad so I bought the powder & it's one of the most disgusting things I've put in my mouth, so $100 later & a cabinet full of isopure I had to go to Wal Mart in search of something I could tolerate. EAS & the bullets have been a huge blessing. I mix the bullets in my water because I have to get at least 64 oz a day so I'm getting water & protien at the same time. I hope this helps give you an idea.
  10. Thank you! It has been a struggle. The only month that was "easy" and the weight just came off was month 1. 22lbs. The rest has been a fight. I really didn't want to live my life on a "diet" but just be normal. I still obese over what I eat and if I worked out. If I am eating enough. Did I eat too much. Should I eat carbs or shouldn't I eat carbs with the level of working out. I still have not found my exact science. I know the sleeve was the healthier option, but considering my history of working out and dieting RNY may have been a better option. In 2007-2008 was working out with a trainer 3 x a week, watching intake, working out on my own. I went from 223 to 203 from October to June. 20lbs! Looking back I was fit but the weight loss was so slow. It is not normal. I am not like others so I try hard not to compare. I know some people would say she is lying she had to be eating twinkies or late night stops to McDonalds. I know what I have done and how I have tried and today it is still a fight. Okay heading out for a walk!

    Totally stopped losing weight

You are at a plateau. Don't stress to much. My longest plateau was a month long. They happen. You are only 3 months into it. The good old saying...."Trust the process". Your body is adjusting to it's current loss. During this time, even though you won't notice lbs disappearing, the inches will be. Hang in there!
  12. Hi Jessica! Great job with your weight loss! I think carbs might have a little to do with my stall. I also think that my working out has something to do with it, oddly enough. We have a new gym in town that does some pretty intense workouts and I go Mon, Weds, and Fri. I can't help but wonder if this sudden change in workout might be causing a little bit of the stall, as well as maybe building muscle. I am going to try the Keto diet to limit my carbs and hope that that, combined with my inability to eat a lot and working out break my stall! Good luck to you on breaking yours!
  13. I lost over 150# since my vsg and have been maintaining since feb 2013. I could not have done it without the surgery, but it DID require major lifestyle improvements. I eat much less quantity and much higher quality of food. I have changed my life from being food centered to food being fuel. I am active. I have to tell you, the last 40-50# required alot of diligence and just plain hard work, but even if I had only lost 100# of my excess I would still be better off. I have spent literally decades and who knows how much money trying to lose and maintain the lose via other methods (including thelapband) and was never able to make it work. Part of it I was more then ready, I was just DONE with junky eating and part of it was I needed the sleeve to control myappetite and be tht "tool" for weight loss. In the beginning I would say it is 80% sleeve... for me that started changing around 8-9 months post op an now I would say it is 80% my effort and 20% sleeve but it is alot easier to live a healthy lifestyle at 150# then it was at 300++++++

    Fit Challenge??

My gym is hosting a 12-week fit challenge. I dont have all the details to it yet, but it seems like who loses the much weight, maybe goes by loss of body fat %. It starts june 7. First place gets $10,000! Second, 3,000 and third 2,000. I want to join, but i feel shy and embarrassed. Plus I just got banded and have heard all about bandster hell. Any words of encouragement?
  15. Hi I'm in the Lou too. Well, just outside. My process started in feb 2012 and my surgery is scheduled sept 11. It truly was a long 6-7 months ! Insurance required 6 monthly visits with my doctor where he watched my weight and counseled me some. Seems like alot of extra medical stuff plus the weight loss institute required psychiatric assessment, visit with dietitian, nurse visit, blood tests, endoscopy, sleep study. Wow looking back it was a lot. But totally worth it with just 11 days to go!! I'm on 2 week pre-op protein shake/clear liquid diet now. No complications pre-op!!
  16. I live in st Charles county so DePaul weight loss institute is closest for me. It's a center of excellence which was also necessary for my insurance. My pcp knew about my attempts to lose weight previously- I did not have to prove anything about it though-just told them at depaul. And it's a one stop shop too which is great-dietitian, nurses, psych assessment, endoscopy, sleep study, surgeon -everyone is there. I would think des Peres hosp would have a similar program. But don't know anything about it for sure. Good luck!

    Anyone from San Diego

I'm here in San Diego and was sleeved on 1/31/14. My surgeon was Dr Zorn with Pacific Bariatric. He's awesome and really encouraging. My highest weight was 251 and I'm now stuck at 185 for some reason. It's a little discouraging so I came here t see who else was having the same hiccup with weight loss.
  18. You and I seem to be losing at the same pace. I'd say that much weight loss Is damn good but try not to compare yourself to others. Personally I can't compare with the majority that post here because one, I'm a very tall guy and Although theres is a world of knowledge to be learned i need more calories than most of the ladies on this board and we lose at a different pace. And two I drink way more protein shakes and other supplements than a lot on this board because I want to gain muscle. But great job with the weight loss!!

    Anyone still smoking?

Not gonna lecture you on it....cause you're an adult and can make your own decisions. But you are aware that if you continue to smoke after surgery at all...you strongly increase the chances of having a leak or staple line ulcer, right? Smoking after weight loss surgery is a huge risk, and springing a lead is a mess. To each, their own, but I personally would never take a risk like that. Would want to make sure I could quit before surgery. Many doctors will not do surgery if you flunk a nicotine test a month before surgery...for good reason. Best wishes to you.

    How's everyones incisions?

My incisions are doing good. I can't see my port incision because my steri strips haven't come off there yet, but it's close. denal8 I didn't tell very many people at my work about the surgery. I've lost 33lbs since dec 1st and the funny thing is that no one has really said anything about my weight loss but i do catch some people looking. It's fine with me that they aren't saying anything, it makes it easier for me! hahaha As for what to say when people do notice you could tell them that you are taking your new years resolution seriously this year. Or that your doctor has put you on a strict diet and exercise plan.
  21. How early and at what rate did y'all loss weight after getting banded. I know everyone is different just wondering.
  22. Congrats on putting the surgery behind you You should start seeing weight loss this week. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much for the encouragement, and Congratulations on your weight loss!! It's being on here thats gonna get me through, people who haven't been through it or felt like I do can say they understand or say im stupid, but until theyve been at that dark place where you don't want to go out its all just words Keep up the good work!! How many calories???

Was my caloric intake consistent or my weight loss? I did average 600 daily, sometimes 400 sometimes 800 but I always made sure it averaged out to 600 daily. Weight loss did slow down in the end but it wasn't bad. Frustrating because I wanted to reach goal but it wasn't a huge plateau or anything. I really work hard too, I do a lot of hard cardio daily and some easy cardio. THAT'S what really makes a difference. I had to stop running for about three weeks due to a medical problem (one that was my own fault) but even then I continued to lose. Must be a metabolism thing from cardio.

    Another Newbie

Thanks, Cindy's mom! I guess I'm just being impatient. I know the weight didn't come on over night but it sometimes feels like it! Have you had any problems with your band? Was your weight loss pretty steady and what did you eat! I've got lots of questions, as you can see! Lol
