I am 6 weeks out and just had a margarita last weekend and I've take 2 short trips. My docs main concern was counting the calories and carbs, not the "alcohol" itself. I think if you don't overdo it, you will be fine. The difference in how you feel between week 2 and week 6 is HUGE!

Does your plan that your surgeon and NUT have on mention it? There are many thoughts on alcohol. Some surgeons say never again, some at least a year some 6 months, 6 weeks. You will just be getting to normal foods when you go so it can be a bit scary but just take it slow and easy. I traveled 6 weeks out and have been on 5 or 6 trips since and it gets easier. Good luck to you!

Should it Stay or Should it Go! (My Fat)
Photo925 replied to the-Russ's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so glad I found this thread.....I was feeling exactly the same as you. I'm doing my lab work on Monday then go see the doctor before starting the Kaiser classes. I have actually done fasting before so the liquid diet actually doesn't scare me as much...I see what you mean about be worried about not enjoying food...but it seems to me that you still get to enjoy everything after some time..just not as much of it. I went to my orientation and I swear they were just trying to scare the crap out of you by saying you can never have caffeine or alcohol or carbonation in your life ever again....my sister was sleeved and although she stays away from carbonation, she has coffee each morning and will partake in a drink from time to time...plus she's a cheap date now cause alcohol effects her way faster (I joke) but really, we are all different and it seems as though you just have to wait and see what will work for you....I was on the fence and even against the surgery when my sister had it done, but I'm really committed to making this change now!! -
I drink a pitcher of beer while I'm working out at the gym. I take two big gulps between each set. Can't have another swig until I do another set....motivates me to keep lifting. Just kidding of course. I really try to limit my alcohol to maybe once a month and just maybe two glasses at most when I do. Really got to watch the alcohol post sleeve with the risks of crossover addictions. But I know that's not your real question. As for calories from it and exercising....I would probably try to have the alcohol on a night I knew I wasn't going to exercise the next day since it can dehydrate you. And good hydration is one of the keys to a good exercise session. As for the calories, there's some debate on a calorie is a calorie. My guess...... it is probably true as far as just pure body weight goes. But someone who weighs say 200 pounds gets X amount of calories from lean Protein, a few slow carbs (veggies) and good fats, will probably stay a little more fit and have a better physique (muscle) than someone who weighs the same 200 pounds, gets the same X calories from about all sugary stuff and saturated fats, which may tend to be stored as fat in the belly and other unwanted places. I really have no science or studies to back that up, but I'm guessing it's out there and I'm just going from my bit of research. With that said, I'd say have some wine from time to time, I do and it hasn't messed me up yet sticking to just once a month indulgence. Just maybe limit it, stay with clear alocohol, no sugar/juices and ease into it and gauge your body's response to it and adjust from there.

Hello my darling Diary.. I am sorry I have neglected you. Work is out of control and I barely have time to breathe. Going online at home is not an option. This is the one area I don't need anyone in my life knowing about. Too stressed to even think today. But glad I was able to drop the 3 lbs I had gained a couple of weeks ago (damn you tasty alcohol beverages!). Spoke with a temp agency this AM seeking new work. They have several temp to hires...that's all I'll accept. Touching base with them Monday to see what they've come up with for me. sorry, too tired to focus. Will do full update monday. toodles.

How is your pre-op diet going?
time2006 replied to AngelaTX's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My post op diet starts when I get home on the 3rd day. I will basically be on atkins. Meat ,cheese, fish ,eggs, or cottage cheese, pureed until the two week mark from surgery. Then I can have same things not pureed. The first week of december I can add a half cup veggies daily. December 22nd I can start half cup fruit a day.at 6months (March) I can have half cup dairy and 1cup caffeine. At 7months I can add 1complex carb. No alcohol for at least a year (rarely rrink anyways) -
Told me I have a Fatty Liver. HUH?
ShineBright724 replied to meyouus's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, I actually have non-alcoholic fatty liver and that was my surgeons reason for suggesting WLS. He took my gallbladder out in Nov. 2012 and noticed my liver and said that weight loss could reverse it. -
Hey...I had an ultrasound of my abdomen yesterday that showed a fatty liver. Now they want to do some sort of test to check my gallbladder.---------I haven't had RNY, but I did have the band since 07.------------I did what most people do in the "off" hours, check medical sites. Nothing is conclusive until I see my Dr and she tells me, whatever... But I must say I'm scared. I do not drink a drop and rarely ever did, but you can still get Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, especially if you weigh what I do. I've heard that surgeon's won't or can't do bariatric surgery if you have fatty liver. Then I read that the experts suggest 'slow" weight loss to recover. And then I saw an article Alex posted that in Germany, they find that fatty liver is dealt well with with WLS. What's the TRUTH? My WLS Clinic appointment is not until November, I'll go crazy before then! -------------has anyone on here had a fatty liver? Oh, and they say change in diet helps but does not cure. I don't know what to think. And as far as the Gallbladder, I have no inkling as to what THAT is all about. I'm having bloodwork asap (don't know if it's a fasting one yet) , maybe tomorrow or Saturday. Any input???

It's easy for alcohol to creep up on you both physically and calorie/sugar wise. My NUT said to do a small amount of vodka with crystal lite or something since juices have added sugar, soda has carbonation, etc. But it can cause dehydration, fluid retention and make you feel icky the next day which could stall weight loss. However, everybody is different! And some is much better at handling foods/drinks than others. Just be cautious - many people can't hold nearly as much as they used to.

my surgeon says he'd rather his patients eat butter than consume alcohol. ever.

Hi, I drink beer with Ice at least once or twice a week and I have not had any problems. My workouts consist of walking and I still appear to loose 2 to 3 pounds a week. I'm waiting until November to hit the big gym. I think with your activity and low consumption you should be ok . Calories are calories it doesn't really matter where they come from so as long as your meeting your daily goal. We all know the health concerns with alcohol consumption but it doesn't sound like your on the wrong path. (:

Sugar in alcohol metabolizes really easily to fat. Protein is harder to turn to fat. I'd try a little and see now you feel.
-
While the alcohol may not make you gain fat, it will be taxing on your liver and it will influence the amount of Water in your body. A few glasses of wine in a week might not break the bank, but don't take it too far. Take it up with your NUT, but I think you should be fine if you're far out enough.
-
If you want a glass of wine that is fine just make sure you account for the calories and carbs just like anything else you eat. I too enjoy a glass every know and then. If you have a carb counting book alcohol might be listed and it is interesting which ones are higher than others.

Yet wondering...if I am consuming some alcohol but staying within my calorie requirements and exercising...will that slow my weight loss? I love spinning and core exercises, tabata, etcetera but I also like a couple glasses of wine a couple times a week. I'm keeping my food carbs low, too. Just wondering about others experiences. FYI--I am almost 5 months out. Down 63 lbs--275 to 212. Eating about 1000/ day and exercising 4-5 times week with good workouts IMO.

Forbidden Fruit...or meat, veggies, etc.
mrsto replied to Armonet's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't have issues with anything passing through the band, or being uncomfortable going down. However, what I do notice is that there are certain fruits that give me a stomach ache; honeydew melon and pineapple....to name a couple. I haven't eaten all the fruits I used to eat, but I'm guessing I'll find more that no longer agree. Weird on the alcohol, huh?? I heard people say that you get buzzed a lot quicker, and they were SO right! I can feel the first sip of wine. That's not to say that I don't drink the whole glass, but I've certainly become a cheap date - LOL (if I were dating) -
Work Dinner- 3 weeks Post-op- Yikes!
SeaLegs replied to AvaFern's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The task is to enjoy and appreciate! Do not drink: alcohol will affect you much more potently with the sleeve. You might have to fake it, or find a potted plant like in the movies. Other ideas: eat before you go, clear broth soup, cut up your food and push it around your plate, or how about just going around the table like a bride and chat/reminisce with each person, then have them box up your dinner? Congratulations! Let us know how you did! -
Work Dinner- 3 weeks Post-op- Yikes!
Bufflehead replied to AvaFern's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would avoid wine or any kind of alcohol entirely. If anyone looks at you funny just say, "sorry, I can't drink right now, doctor's orders!" Unless your boss and co-workers were raised by wolves, they'll respect that and let it drop. If you have a great time and are friendly and happy with everyone, they aren't going to think you are being rude or ungrateful. -
Work Dinner- 3 weeks Post-op- Yikes!
AvaFern posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a small problem, and while in theory it's a great problem to have, if anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it. I have worked for a company for the past 10 years and I have been blessed with an opportunity to move on- my last day is next week. I have a really amazing boss who is taking our entire office out to dinner this Friday to Celebrate my time with the business. The dinner is at a very, very nice steakhouse and there will be an expectation of at least a little bit of alcohol consumption. So outside of the fact that I'm a little concerned about not being able to eat much, there is also the wine issue. I've never been a big drinker, but I feel like it's rude to not at least take a few sips and to heartily enjoy what will likely be a very expensive meal. Also...no one at work has any idea I had this surgery and I am currently at 3.5 weeks post-op. My three best friends are aware that I've had it (none of these people work with me), but past that I have no intention of anyone else ever finding out. I don't want to appear unappreciative or ungrateful, but there is no way that I would tell anyone at work the real reason why I can't eat and drink. Also, while I feel comfortable with what I can and cannot nibble on, I have not had any alcohol since surgery and before that I was already kind of a lightweight. Will a sip or five of wine be ok or is this one of those things (like chicken and bread for me) that is going to make me instantly sick? Any thoughts you all have on this would be appreciated. Thank-you! -
Breyers makes carb smart and no sugar added. 4 grams of sugar 4 grams sugar alcohol and 13 carbs.

The only thing I'd worry about is all the sugar alcohol in it... It'll give you diarrhea

Can i have one night of drinking?
Em's Mom replied to sleeveddoll's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are on a liquid preop diet, drinking will knock you flat. Also, if you are having problems with following instructions before the surgery, are you sure you're ready to face the diet restrictions that will follow the surgery? The preop diet is for shrinking the fat around your liver to minimize complications during surgery. Drinking 8 oz of alcohol is a lot for one evening. Please think hard about what you are doing. -

gamergirl replied to sleeveddoll's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op's purpose is to shrink your liver. The way to shrink your liver is by restricting total calories, total carbs, and total fats. Alcohol contains two of those (calories and carbs/sugars), and is also pretty hard on your liver. You could therefore increase the chance of complications. As a trade-off, it's hard to see the upside.
