    Nausea and sweats

How far out are you? I am way behind most people on what I can tolerate, I had my surgery 5+ weeks ago and the thought of eating meat just sounds terrible to me. I am still struggling with protein shakes, yogurt, cottage cheese, soup, a scrambled egg here and there. Everyone is different, take it slow. Your system isn't ready for that yet, meat is hard for a lot of people to handle.
  2. CherCare, your dilemma sounds very familiar to me, so I will share in the hopes it helps you. After what seems like years of suffering, I finally figured out that I have an intolerance to certain types of artificial sweeteners. In the last 2 months, you've probably been dieting, yes? I would start with the sugars you're consuming. Personally, I cannot do sucralose or stevia even in small quantities. Most premade or ready to eat foods have sucralose. Flavored waters, Water Enhancer drops, premier Protein shakes, protein powders, diet yogurts, etc, etc. It's everywhere in low calorie foods. And there is also a thing called FODMAPs. These are short chain carbohydrates that some people have problems digesting. All of the fake sugars fall into one of this overall category. I suffered for years, had every uncomfortable test known to man, including my gastroenterologist removing my gall bladder because "maybe that will help." It didn't. They just kept telling me I had IBS and tried to throw pills at me. Somehow I made it through 30+ years without IBS, but suddenly I had this. In actuality, I was only ill when I tried to "eat healthy" aka diet, that I had diarrhea. When I went back to eating what I liked (non diet food), I wasn't sick. I used to think I was allergic to dieting. The most Enlightened wisdom and profound eureka came in the form of an awesome nutritionist who taught me all about FODMAPs. My regular doctor and gastro doc have no idea what FODMAPS are. They both looked at me as if I was speaking Greek. I would see a good nutritionist who will help guide you through a FODMAP elimination diet so you can figure out the offending foods and start feeling normal again. 3. Drop the carbs and the yogurt. Increase your protein. you should be able to have 3-4 ounces of meat at a time. I would ditch the premier shake too honestly, and replace it with meat unless you really just can't eat and that is your only option. Cut out all processed foods (and Protein shakes are fake processed foods), and eat lean meats you cook yourself, get up to 90 grams of protein and I am pretty sure you will see the scale moving. Even with your not intense workouts you are still probably burning more calories than you are intaking. You need more protein to fuel yourself. Thank you for all your advice. It gets so confusing sometimes, sometimes I'm told I'm not eating enough calories and then I'm told I'm eating too much ! It's so confusing !

  5. I average around 1000-1200 calories. Usually a premier shake for breakfast sometimes an egg with turkey bacon 2 hours after . Lunch is usually 2 oz of lean protein with 1 oz of veggies. Snacks are low calorie cheese sticks, Chobani 100 yogurts or 1oz of Trader Joe's trail mix unsalted. Occasionally I'll have a 100 cal bag popcorn or a piece of bark thins . Carbs are usually 40-50g a day . And yep I'm regular ☹️
  6. P3 packs (once you're cleared for nuts) Greek yogurt Tuna cheese (lots of cheese sticks, cheese cubes, etc.) Refried Beans Special K Protein Cereal with Fairlife (not low carb if you're doing that) I can't stand protein shakes. Yuck.
  7. This Friday December 9th I will be one month post-op. A little refresher on me: I was 470 pounds on October 26th when I started my pre op diet. I was 440 pounds when I had my surgery on November 9th. By November 19th I was 420 pounds. The weight loss slowed down then and by November 29th I was around 413 pounds. 7 pounds in 10 days. I joined a gym near my job that has an indoor pool and after my surgeon said it was OK to swim, I decided to start swimming for 30 minutes each morning at 7 am before I go to work. I'm doing the breast stroke, nice and easy, taking my time. I started swimming on November 29th at 413 pounds. Today December 6th I'm 403.5 pounds. The swimming is helping the weight come off! If you are NOT exercising, you really should. It makes a difference! As for eating, I'm trying to get in around 100-120 grams of Protein a day. The swimming makes me hungry so I bring about 5-6 small meals with me to work. I try to eat about every 2-3 hours. It could be a chobani greek yogurt, some pureed chicken or turkey, Soup, hummus. I'm trying to be aware of fat and sugar and make protein the most important thing I eat, plus plenty of Water. I'm just really happy I started swimming because it's really helped me to get even more energetic in the morning and it's going to help with the weight loss! Thanks for reading this! Russ

    6.5 pounds in 4 days!

Alot of people do! I only eat 200 calorie Breakfast and lunch (banana, egg then soup) and a 100 calorie evening meal most days. I try to push more and occasionally hit 700 cals if my granddaughter gives me a chocolate button or two when playing. But most days, 400 to 500 calories is my outcome. For the first three months it was 100 to 300, last three is 400 to 500, with 600 to 700 exception days. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App And you are sick all the time. People that want to live have more calories. Your body can't function on that little. Starvation is not health. @@OhHeyMarina Ahh I missed the yogurts. What????? "People that want to live have more calories"!!! Do you think I choose to eat like this? Do you think I choose to have C Diff? To lose my hair? To "be sick all the time"???? I have worked hard to get up to this calorie a day level, to take all my Vitamins and meds, to move around, to drink my Water requirements. I make my Soups from scratch using beef bones for the broth to get Protein in. I eat a banana for the potassium. We agree that starvation is not health which is exactly what I have been saying since day one! Malnutrition can be an unfortunate side effect of a vsg. That is not a choice. I am following my plan to the letter. As much protein as I can push, followed by my water, then meds and supplements, then veg and fruit. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    6.5 pounds in 4 days!

@@OhHeyMarina I was only told to make sure I am getting 70-90 grams of Protein. The way I have been doing it is I just have 3 shakes a day (1 for each of my main meals) and then 1 AM snack and 1 PM snack in between each of those meals of either yogurt or SF pudding. Of course I am drinking LOTS of Water all day as well! I have been using the Syntrax nectar protein line, and my favorite is the chocolate Truffle Protein powder flavor. I LOVE it. I have tried many different brands before, and this is the one my sister found and stuck with after her surgery over a year ago and is also my favorite. I didn't care for the Premier Protein Shakes honestly, at least not for me. I tried the broth but the kinds I found at my local grocery stores were NOT good on their own... can't do the broth thing. So I am pretty limited on the variety of things I have in my day but overall I don't feel hungry and I am hitting my protein requirements everyday doing that I keep track of it on my fitbit account.
  11. 1) It depends. We all react differently. I was back at work after 3 days, and I could definitely have done 2 weeks. However, people with more comorbidities or who are otherwise more sensitive need more time. 3) Other than no NSAIDS, I have no real restrictions. In fact, I'm more free than I've been in years. 4) Drink kefir or eat yogurt every day for a month after surgery to repopulate your gut bacteria. While anecdote does not equal data, I am certain it aided in my speedy recovery and lack of nausea. 6) Most people have significant improvements in sleep apnea after the surgery. @@OhHeyMarina Hey girl, I too have noticed that going through this full liquid diet phase pre-op it is really almost all mental and emotional hunger rather than physical! After about day 4 I found I rarely feel "hungry" and I am much more satisfied with my protein shakes, yogurt, and SF pudding. This phase has caused me a lot more emotional ups and downs than anything, but I am really appreciating the process and it helps me better understand my dependence on food in my life for things outside of hunger and nutrition. You are doing amazing! Keep it up! I am now on day 9 out of 14, it does get better! Just hang in there girl <3

What to pack for lunch when 6 weeks out

I have access to a microwave and small kitchen, but more often than not I pack stuff that doesn't require preparation or heating. I love the P3 Protein packs. They have just the right amount of meat, cheese, and nuts to fill me up and get me a good protein bump. I also pack greek yogurt, and sometimes chicken strips that are pre-cooked to eat cold or warm with some teryaki dipping sauce. I usually have a couple of Protein Bars in my bag just in case, as well.

well 7 pounds exactly now haha but @OutsideMatchInside I'm doing about 700-800 my Protein shakes are each 160 so 2 a day are 320 "I'm suppose to have 4 of them but it isn't happening" my yogurts are about 90-100 each depending on the flavor and thats 3 times a day so about 300 and then 2 Jello are 20 so there is 40 popsicles are 10 i have about 2 of those also so 20 then some broth which i don't count the calories cause its always home made but obviously there is some in there so I'm getting at least 680 calories not including the broth plus i do drink crystal lights and stuff which is 5-10 calories and sometimes i have about 5 of these @@Mimiof3 YOU CAN DO IT!!! @@sparkles83 thank you!

What to pack for lunch when 6 weeks out

I agree with "genn". The World According to Eggface Blog is a great place to see lunch combinations. She uses a Bento box and fills it up with different things like turkey lunch meat, cheese cubes, dip made with yogurt and veggies, grapes, etc.
  18. I will be going back to work right after the holidays, I'm looking for some ideas as far as what I could pack. I will be doing "Blue Collar" controlled industrial area type work and fighting for a microwave is not an ideal thing. So far I'm thinking of dicing up chicken, small chunks of cheese, yogurt, and maybe avocado. What are things that you would put into your lunch box? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Soft Protein Food Ideas?

For soft Proteins, I agree, cottage cheese, yogurt and the Protein shakes are great. My nutritionist said we need to get at least 60 grams of protein a day. Also, you can try canned chicken and mix it with some no fat or low fat mayo and seasonings (chicken salad).... you can do the same with tunafish. Or you can bake some soft fish like tuna, salmon or tilapia... all great ways to get protein and they are nice soft meats. I am on the pureed stage and have been eating non fat refried Beans with a teaspoon of light sour cream and a dash of hot sauce. I also like the non fat chicken salad. I have tried cottage cheese, non fat greek yogurt and Egg Beaters for Breakfast.

    Soft Protein Food Ideas?

Well you need to be getting protein so I would say protein shakes, yogurt, and cottage cheese would be best bets.
  21. I started doing my own shakes a few days out from surgery, I had a hard time getting the Premier Protein down after drinking them for a few days. I have found that when I blend the chocolate premier with ice it's like a chocolate shake and I have no problems. The Protein Shakes I made right after surgery just had Greek yogurt (I used the oikos triple zero) and plain or vanilla protein powder, if I didn't want fruit flavor from the yogurt I'd throw in some Peanut Butter and half a banana (both were allowed on my stage 2 plan). I used almond milk in these but if I had found fairlife skim milk sooner I probably would have used that instead! Now almost 2 months out I do frozen fruit with Water, stevia and a tbsp of GENEPRO. Makes about a cup and a half -but I only use 3/4 cup frozen fruit- on my way into work. According to my fitness pal it has about 130 cals and it fills me up for a couple of hours. The genepro protein is a god send I wish I had ordered it sooner. It was expensive but I was having a really hard time choking down the other protein powders I got from GNC, I have a protein powder graveyard in my cupboard lol!!!

  23. I can't stand the taste or texture of ready to drink shakes. I made my own too. My program said that if adding milk or yogurt to smoothies then not to add fruit. To keep the sugar and calorie content lower? I'm guessing? They also told me to keep smoothies under 30g Protein. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    ugh to the liquid diet!

i'm only allowed Protein shakes and Water (though i could add fruits, yogurt to the shake)... the first day i used unsweetened almond milk with the shakes thinking it would mask some of the flavor. i'm 4 days in and i no longer use the milk- water only and LOTS of it. the colder the better. my favorite so far has been to blend an orange, vanilla Protein Powder, ice, and lots of water. it gets frothy and tastes sorta like an orange julius (or so my mind likes me to believe). also decaf instant coffee and/or Peanut Butter (powder) added to the protein powder is a "great" way to drink the shakes. but besides all that, how's your gut? OMG I'M DYING WITH RUMBLING AND GAS AND BATHROOM TRIPS! :(
  25. Yes. I've been doing that. Here are some things I add. Not all together but I change it up.
