When I went to the doctor for my consultation I honestly thought that I did have a big frame. I was shocked when he said that I will probably be more on the small/petite size once I've lost all the weight. My BMI chart said that at 5'5" I should be about 120, but Dr W. says that I'll look great at 135/140. Those charts are so confusing, and he said that doctors shouldn't use them anymore.

Awesome! You must be in San Diego area! We will be getting sleeved around the same time since we'll be finishing classes around the same time! So it's 10% of your starting weight at the orientation that they took? Do u know if you lose too much you can then not qualify? -

Im in the Kaiser program now too, It's actually a great resource to learn everything you will need to know before the surgery (mind you some of the stuff they talk about is just repetitive and overkill for anyone who has ever tried to lose weight ). My program is 24 weeks as opposed to 12, but it has gone by pretty quick so far (6 weeks in). I know I have to start getting on track to lose my 10%, but I also kind figure that I can lose it in the 4 months of classes that I have after the first of the year...good luck to you!! -
Just fascinated if anyone has bought anything, Usually, it's meals and supplement website devoted to low carbs, huge quantity provides, and other protein/weight decrease products. I've been placing buys for the last 2 a few several weeks and could not be more satisfied. The have an awesome option of low carbs meals. Definitely analyze it out if you are looking for low carbs options.

I'm still considered "overweight" according to the BMI scale. Do I still want to lose more weight? NO. I'm healthier than majority of those Regular BMI'ers.

Read the wording very carefully. Mine said "weight loss surgery excluded EXCEPT for cases of medical necessity" or something similar to that. Contact the utilization department of your insurance and obtain a printed copy of their exact wording. Hope that helps.

Feet should be at or bit wider than shoulder distance. Toes must be pointing forward, that could be your issue. Always look at your feet before you start your set. Go down slowly to the point where your butt just goes to where it would if you were sitting in a chair. The weight should be in the front of your thighs which at that point is on the top of your legs. You should not feel it in your back or knees. Lift up slowly so you come up straight and don't wobble forward. In Yoga there is a pose called chair pose where you hold that downward position without any weights for 30 seconds to a minute. That really helps to develop proper technique. If you feel strain in your knees something is wrong. Go through the above steps and if that doesn't do it make the trainer watch you do every squat and tell him exactly what you are feeling. The last thing he wants is for you to get hurt. Good luck

I Cannot Be The Only Person To Have Ever Asked This Question...
SmilinGal replied to Lissa's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I hope after I lose this weight, I will be able to use this information. -
Spinning is great because you can go at your own level. Don't worry about the spastic person next to you cranking it as hard as they can trying to out-do the instructor (there's one in every class). Just go at the pace you feel comfortable with and try to push yourself occassionally. That is where you will see the gains in your fitness and endurance.

surprise response
itscometothis replied to quazarfrog's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Here comes a big hug.. and it's a squishy one! I told a friend of mine who is VERY overweight and her response was.." I am going to join weight watchers and do it the right way. I wouldn't ever do that to my body." I was standing there thinking the following.. 1. Why did I tell her? 2. She appears jealous and jealous people gossip and I didn't want people knowing.. crap. 3. What is she talking about never doing THAT to her body... she already did THAT and more by eating like she was having her last meal on death row for the past 39 years. Which isn't a judgement call.. I did the same. The thing is.. we can't control other people's reactions and if they react in a bad way then they need to figure it out. I had hoped telling my friend would make us closer in a weird way.. but I can safely predict that this isn't going to go over well. Hold your head up high and be proud -
Holy Cow... it all starts tomorrow
Goofyspice posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yikes!!!! Its finally here. Tomorrow AM. Been getting a bit anxious... surprise!!! Ya the nightmare I had the night before last was my first clue. I was driving a car and the breaks went out. Thank goodness the phone rang, cuz I had just pulled up the E-brake and "ring-ring" Yesterday I was having internal dialogs with my self. I was a bit redundant with the questions to myself HEAD: "Really, Seriously...you NEED a Surgery to loose weight??? ***pause*** think*** ponder*** SELF: yes I do, haven't figured it out after how many years/trys. SELF: " you have seen others here in this forum start with the same doubts right beforesurgery...drrrr" HEAD: "Really Seriously...you SELF: "shut up HEAD!!!" "we have already discussed this." I was a little annoyed that my sister is not going to spend the night tonight but is picking me up in the morning. I live closer to the Hospital than she does by a good half hour and the trip to the hospital with out rush hour traffic is an additional hour. She said when she realized I was on Clear liquids only for two days she didn't want to be around my grumpy butt. In the end I think it works out well not because I may be grumpy but I don't need to get into any sister fights LOL !!! My furr- babies were just crying by their food bowl while I was on the phone. I asked them if they were hungry and I told them too bad if Iam on a liquid diet than everyone's on a liquid Diet!!!! Have no fear I will feed them but they could stand to lose a pound or two. A friend the other day asked if my cat ...Bubba was pregnant? I said No HE is not preggers. Ahhh... I feel better just rambling all my goofiness right now even thought my stomach is growling!!!!! So I have exactly 4 hours left till the midnight no more anything cut off and then around 11:30 pacific time tomorrow (4-11-11) I will no longer be a virgin-- surgery virgin that is Shoot I still have to pack!!!!!!!!! -
I do know my body burns calories all the time. I know some people don't believe I starvation mode, I do, in the past when dieting I've tried to eat less than reccomended to lose weight and I stopped losing. Once I started eating more again I started losing again. So I believe it in. I do know that I've lost inches. I've had to get smaller pants and work scrubs. I get at least 80grams of protein per day, so that is adequate. As for the gym, I usually go in the morning about an hour after breakfast. This morning I wasn't really hungry, but I felt I should eat, so I had an unjury protein shake, made with milk, so it was 28grams of protein.

I think I've had great success with the band and working out has been a large part of that. Even though I work out a LOT, I don't make any special food allowances for that. If I'm hungrier for some reason I may eat more, but it's not like I think of it as earning credits as you might in Weight Watchers or something. All this said, I never did count calories, so I did have a different approach in general. But I think it's best either way to think of exercise as just a part of your lifestyle rather than as something that allows you to (or requires you to) eat more. Best of luck to you!

Hang in there it gets better and it does not take long. I remember asking myself "what have I done", when I was in the hospital. After a couple of weeks that changed to "that was not that bad", and now it has changed to "I would not change a thing, and I would recommend it to anyone who is tired of struggling with a weight issue."

You'll have to make your own choice about whether or not to drink. I usually don't get any alcohol, but will sip from my husband's. YMMV. I thought I'd share this post from another band site discussing alcohol and it's effect on weight loss. Alcohol inhibits the hormones that make you feel full, promotes the hormones that make you hungry, and lowers your inhibitions. Yes, people tend to eat more when they drink. Plus alcohol is basically a toxin that your liver has to process and it doesn't process food in the same way while it's process alcohol. It takes about 3 days to get rid of the alcohol completely. So for every day you have a drink you'll generally go 3 days without losing weight. That doesn't seem like a good trade off. One can get by with a few sips of wine before dinner but a 5 ounce serving of red is about 130 calories. When one is trying to eat 1200 calories there's not a lot of room to spend a 10th of the daily allotment on alcohol.

I Ihave started this Pilates yoga excercise class. Never imagined I could do it. After a year, I'm ready to jump into this with both feet. Finally can move instead of waddle...yes like a duck. Embrace and take advantage of the weight loss and freedom in movement.

Low weight/high reps vs. high weight/low reps
Jachut replied to davsil's topic in Fitness & Exercise
High weight low reps - and go really heavy, as heavy as you can possibly manage. Better yet, do it circuit style, dont have breaks and sets in the same way that you do with regular lifting - and focus on whole body movements, dont waste your time standing round doing bicep curls. It will get your heart rate skyrocketing and torch calories. -
Wow that is great.Have you had a pretty steady weight loss? I see you have lost seventy-nine pounds. I have been stuck at 165 for almost three months. I cannot buy the body bug because I am paying for college for my daughter. She has the band to. She has lost about 30 since March. The last thirty pounds is a B---- You go girl

I was happy..then sad! Need some feedback pls!
terrasmom replied to bobbiezhere's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes you definately must tell your doctor about the sleep apnea!! Dangerous to go into surgery without giving him that information!!! Also my insurance company had to have three things "presenting" as a result of my weight, and yours may be the same. I also got the doctors treating my conditions to write the insurance companies letters for me. Hang tough, it WILL happen! -
Low weight/high reps vs. high weight/low reps
jagoholmes replied to davsil's topic in Fitness & Exercise
It really depends where you are on your journey. If you are at goal weight then you should be really looking at using higher weights, but if you are still a long way off, it can sometimes be a problem in that with higher body fat levels comes a raised testosterone level, meaning you can build muscle much faster. Now this isn't necessarily a problem because we want more muscle... more muscle the faster the metabolic rate. But what can sometimes happen is the increase in muscle tissue, especially in men tends to make them look a little bigger. Also you will never see any toning of muscles if they are covered in a layer of body fat. Its like displaying a priceless Ming vase covered in bubble wrap, you just won't see the benefits, so keep your training to larger muscle groups, moderate weights and circuit training style to get the best of both worlds, fat burning, muscle building and cardio. Hey everyone! My names Cat, and I've been in the process of looking into the lap band and other weight loss surgeries to help me with what my dr calls the "monumental" task of losing 200+lbs. I'm 26 years old, a mother to a hyper 15month old boy, a student in my 4th year of my bachelors and 2lbs shy of 400lbs. I recently had a consultation with a lap-band surgeon, and he said he has no reason he wouldn't perform the surgery, it's up to me, but with such a large amount of weight to lose, perhaps I should look into gastric by pass. At least talk with a surgeon and see what it's all about. He told me that with a lap-band, and at my current weight, with work and diet, I should expect to lose about 80lbs. Seeing as that's barely a dent in what I need to get gone, he said unless I'm that rare 1% of people who take it to the extreme, he wanted me to be aware of the average results. Although I appreciated his honesty... I was hoping for a more inspirational talk! lol. Anyway... I was just wondering what you fine group of people thought, and how you're feeling about your choice as a person of size to go with lap-band versus other options. The other things weighing on my mind, which I dont want to decide the choice of surgery on, but hey, it's there, is my surgery would be out of pocket (and my pockets dont go very deep!) Where as gastric by pass or sleeve would be covered for me. Isn't that aweful?! At my size it's not a "cosmetic" surgery lol. Thanks for listening guys, hope to hear back from some of you!
