    Scars

I didn't have noticeable scarring from my RNY, but I had A LOT of it after plastic surgery. I've read it can take up to two years for the scars to lighten and flatten as much as they're going to. The scars from my lower body lift (Aug 2018) are looking pretty good at this point, but it's been over a year. The ones from the rest (March 2019) are still pretty red. I'm sure they'll lighten, though. Yours probably will as well if it's only been three months.
  3. So I'm just ahead of you in the process - I'm 2 weeks 4 days today. And like you I had no issue getting water and yogurt down - even 4 days after surgery I was getting 64 oz in just water, not to mention my protein shakes. But then came week 2 when I started soft foods and I couldn't eat a whole scrambled egg. Then the next night I barely finished my 4 oz of chili (which was mostly 3 oz of chili liquid and 1 oz lean beef). I wondered the exact same stuff you were but trust me, the restriction will come. Just stick to your plan. And don't worry about the weight stall when you start soft foods. I just hit it and got over it (I think and hope). BTW we'll have to chat about Australia sometime soon. Wife and I are thinking of going there and NZ in May for our 10 year anniversary!

    Four weeks post op RNY

I think you are losing just fine. I had surgery on October 1 and weighed 285 that day. Today I'm 266.....for two weeks I stayed at 270...stall already......So..I've only lost 19 lbs. It's slow compared to others but still happy to be slowly losing. I do wonder why i did this to myself sometimes. I thought with RNY you were supposed to lose faster.
  5. 7-10 weeks it take your belly to heal, So be careful that is a big cut and will need to be taken care of, Do not push it and just chill and let your body recover, I can say even today i still have issues with some foods, There is a big difference between Yogurt and Cottage Cheese and a 4oz piece of chicken, So i would lay low till atleast week 5 to make sure you are somewhat healed up. F@#ck Food - is my attitude
  6. Just curious if anyone has had a significant rise in their Total Bilirubin and Vitamin B12 levels post op. My Bili is always on the high end of normal, or BARELY above normal. I was once told that I might have some sort of benign liver disease (I was 19 at the time - I am now 47), but no other doc was ever concerned as the rest of my liver function tests are usually normal. And while the only time I have ever had (knowingly) a Vitamin B12 level was pre-op... it WAS normal. When I got home from the hospital, I noticed online that my Bilirubin was much higher than my normal while I was in the hospital. I just assumed that it was due to injury/irritation of liver or gallbladder during surgery and hoped it would come down by my next set of post-op labs. Well, I was supposed to do my 3 month labs 2 weeks prior to my 3 month appointment. Because I was going back to work, I decided to get it done 2 weeks earlier. They are posted on my physician portal and they have me a little alarmed. Most are OK, with a few out of the ordinaries. But my Total Bilirubin is 1.9 which is a little HIGHER than it was in the hospital, but also my Vitamin B12 level is greater than 2000. Of course, you look these up online and the possibilities of what is causing this is pretty scary... so I don't want to jump to those conclusions. But I can't find enough research regarding this phenomenon with WLS. I had the sleeve. I know my liver was fatty according to my surgical notes. I know I am losing weight rapidly so that can cause issues. But, has anyone else go through this? If so, what was the cause? And did it resolve on its own? Or did it resolve at all? Kind of anxious, but my appoint with the doc isn't until December. Struggling with deciding if I should wait and see if the doc calls me when he sees the results, making an appointment for sooner, or just waiting until the next appointment. Worried, but also know I was fine before surgery, so maybe I am still just recovering? Or maybe it is my gallbladder acting up without too many symptoms yet... or maybe it IS a liver disease. Not ready to think Cancer yet, but don't want to "wait and see" too long either. Ugh. Anyhow... I doubt the doc has seen my results yet.

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Day 7: What book am I most grateful for? I had to give this a lot of thought since I have been an active reader for my whole life. I was the pasty white kid who stayed inside all summer reading books because I just love to read. There is one book I have kept on my nightstand since it was published and it is called "Healing Hearts" by Dr. Hisashi Nikaidoh. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Nikaidoh for about 10 years at a children's hospital--he is a pediatric heart surgeon and one of the most amazing doctors I have ever worked with. He wrote the book about some of his experiences as a surgeon after losing his physician son in a tragic accident. Some of the families he writes about are people that I knew and worked with. Working with him and many others at the start of my career really shaped me as a nurse and nurse practitioner. When I read it even now it reminds me of how fortunate I have been to spend my career taking care of other peoples' children. I have definitely received so much in return from these amazing kids and their families.
  8. When I had surgery on October 10 I weighed in at 235. I’m now four weeks post op and my weight is 218. I was under the assumption that I would lose more/faster by having RNY over VSG.. is my weight loss ‘normal’.. should I be losing faster? This weekend im allowed to start move from basic walking to real exercise.. I’m hoping that will help.
  9. I was scared too...but I can honestly say it's the best decision I've ever made. You'll do fine just focus on how much healthier and happier you're gonna be. Based on my recent medical tests this has improved and extended my life. My surgery was July 19, 2019 and I've lost 51 pounds and counting. Good luck, you've got this!!!

I HATE I GOT THIS STUPID SURGERY!

Stick to your teams plan. Its still early. The effort you put in now will pay off over the next few months. This surgery is 10%Physical and 90% mental. Hang in there.

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Day 7 gratitude: I can only pick one?!? 😄 I looked through my book list and choosing a favorite is pretty literally impossible. I'm going to narrow it down to one series - The Dark Tower, by Stephen King. It's a series I try to re-read every 5-10 years, and it's one of the few I still own in print.

    MEN 300-350 LBS WEIGHT LOSS

Great thread. I'm 3 months from 40....just got sleeved on November 4, 2019, weighing in at 301.5 (I'm 5' 9"). HW-316. Like others, I didn't have a set goal weight. I kind of set 199 for myself just because it's been nearly 25 years since I've seen a 1 as the first digit on the scale. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Post-op weight loss expectations

Your initial couple weeks or so of loss includes a lot of water weight, as you body gets used to the large caloric deficit and struggles to get used to operating on so little (that initial loss is primarily glycogen - stored carbohydrate - which comes off quickly and includes a lot of water that keeps it in solution. Once that has burned off and the body gets the idea that you are serious about this caloric deficit thing, it finally decides that it needs to get serious and start drawing on your fat stores, which comes off more slowly. So, yes, it is normal to lose a lot the first couple of weeks, and also to stall a bit and not lose anything for a week or so, and then start losing again, but more slowly. Long to intermediate term, figure on 1-2 lb per week (5-10 lb per month) as a good sustainable loss rate, with some weeks or months being above or below trend. For instance, my loss, starting from a bit under 300 lb, was 32 lb the first month, followed by 15, 15, 10, 10, 10, by which time I was within about 10 lb of goal weight and started ramping up my calories to slow things down. Also, figure on your loss rate declining over time - it simply takes fewer calories to move your body around 24/7 when you weigh 250 vs. 350. This trips up some people, particularly if they increase their intake after a few months - increasing intake meets declining calorie burn and you reach stability, whether you are at goal or not.. So try to maintain a fairly low intake at least until you are within sight of your goal weight. Good luck!

    The Maintenance Thread

Shhhh. Don't tell me that! Thinking that I can't gain more than 10 lbs after having plastic surgery without screwing up the work is one factor that is helping me stay where I am!! (actually, my plastic surgeon didn't say anything at all about gaining or losing weight. But I've read others' postings on this and/or other bariatric forums that their plastic surgeons advised them not to gain or lose more than 10 lbs or it'd affect the work. Since my PCP told me that 140-160 is a good weight range for me, and I had plastic surgery at 150 lbs, that fit in absolutely perfectly!)
  15. Good morning all! I'm 2 weeks and 2 days post-op and things seem to be going well. Much less pain daily and really only when I sneeze or cough does it hurt. Incisions are healing nicely. At first I lost fast, like 4 pounds a day. After a few days of that it slowed to 2 pounds a day, then 1 and now it's 1 pound every other day. I was 299 this morning, same as yesterday. It's been 28 total since surgery day (327 that morning) but the slowing down worries me. Am I still losing like a I should? What weight can I realistically expect to be at in 6 months? My 10 year anniversary is in May and we want to go to New Zealand and Australia for that but I'd LOVE to be under 250 so I can do all the adventure stuff I used to not be able to do due to weight limits. I get my liquids, at least 64 in just water and another 16 with my protein shakes at least. Yesterday I was pushing 96 oz of total liquid. Food is protein shake for lunch, then yogurt (2 g sugar total), then Unjury shake around lunch then some sort of soft protein for dinner (egg, chili, ground meat, etc). Additionally I couldn't eat a full egg last night. Maybe got 3/4 of it down before I felt 'full' and had some pain. Is that normal? Will it get better and will I be able to get my full 4 oz in eventually? Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with what's happened so far - I'm just concerned for the future. I really thought I'd be shedding a pound a day at least and I'm concerned that I won't get to the full 4 oz I'm supposed to be eating.

    The Maintenance Thread

Here's another surgeon opinion: My guy is more concerned about weight loss rather than weight gain after plastics. He said a 15 lb weight gain would make a negligible visual difference, but 5-10 lb loss would/could likely result in skin folding along the scar incision. At the time of my consult, I was 127 lbs and he was not concerned about more weight loss because he said "You don't really have anything left to lose". Well surprise! I've gone down 13+ lbs since I saw him last. We'll see what he has to say next week at the pre-op appt. P.S. A small part of me (a VERY small part) is low-key considering postponing the surgery to give me more time to be at specific weight for a longer period of time. This coupled with the fact that as time goes on, I don't seem to be bothered as much with the state of my skin as I was before. I'm totally walking around naked and don't mind it one bit (Mr. is pleased). ALSO, my plastics priorities are changing. Now I want a butt lift, I think! I guess this is why (some) people say to wait a while after reaching goal to go down the plastics path...

if you're like most of us, that 10-20 lb rebound is going to happen, whether you do it on purpose or not. I personally would not try to do it as it's very likely to happen on its own. I was totally convinced I was never going to have the rebound weight that most of WLS'ers have because I was so good at monitoring my weight and my food intake, but....ta da....at about three years out, I started slowly gaining. Put on about 15 lbs. I'm not complaining because I was a little too thin before and I look good at my current weight, but I just wanted you to know that rebound does happen to many of us without our even trying. re: plastic surgery - a lot of plastic surgeons advise people not to gain or lose more than 10 lbs after surgery because you're at risk of it affecting the work if you gain/lose much more than that. That's one of the reasons I wanted it (not the main reason - but one of them). I was hoping it would force me not to gain more than 10 lbs (and I did have plastic surgery after my 15 lb rebound, so I should be OK...)

I could have written all of this .... I was planning to let a bounce happen, and float up +10 lbs or so post ps. Like you, I liked my body better when I was a bit heavier. I also figured it might fill out some of the areas not fixed my plastics. But my surgeon was adamant that surgery weight - weight skin removed be your forever weight. Can't say I'm totally comfortable with that.
  19. I had mine 10/16/2019 it was a rough start... the first 5 days after surgery I was in so much pain! I’m 3 weeks out and I’ve gone from 237 to 220... I can barely eat anything and I constantly crave water bc I feel dehydrated 24/7. Although I’m supposed to be on full liquids for another 2 weeks I’ve added a soft scrambled egg to my diet, I did consult my surgeon and he told me it was ok. I don’t try to do it often.

    The Maintenance Thread

It is a mental game for sure. I was freaking out in August since I was already at goal and still consistently losing. I felt I had no control and at that rate would be 110 lbs. by October. I increased calories and volume as much as I could and the weight loss eventually slowed but still felt like I didn't have control of it. Sure enough as many of you said it would slow down. I think I have lost 1-2 pounds over the past 6-8 weeks but on some days I have gained a pound back so I guess I am officially maintaining at 126.5-128lbs. I am now at 1500 calories consistently and can sometimes eat 3/4 of a cup of food (if it's soft, or slider type) at a sitting. I can now eat and egg with some veggies, yogurt or RX bar in less than 5 minutes and finish a protein shake in 15-20 if i am in a hurry if I haven't eaten in the 1-2 hours before so it has definitely improved. I have now seen 2 plastic surgeons to discuss arm and tummy skin issues for a spring surgery. Both have said (at 5'2.5 in and 127lb.) that I don't have anymore fat I could lose. They both made comments about how thin I am (that sounds crazy to me because I would NEVER consider myself thin) and both said I am just skin and muscle. I thought I had some fat in the love handle area but the PS said it's just skin. So now the decision I have is to try and stay at 127lbs. or do I let myself slip down a few more pounds assuming I will have the 10 lb. regain everyone talks about or should I purposely try to gain a few pounds for my ideal weight. If I could set the scale for the future for a consistent weight for the rest of my life I would actually like to be 5-7 lb and maybe even 10 lb. heavier. At that weight a few months ago I felt I looked good and didn't have as much saggy skin. I would anticipate I would be losing 2-3 pounds of skin in the spring for surgery as well so i need to account for that.

    Revision

Is there a reason you're not losing? are you have trouble? are is it just to lose more? I would start by looking at why it's not working. Is it your food choices? Overeating? Not exercising? The reason i'm saying this is because if its those things, a new WLS won't fix it for the long term. You have to start within. I would suggest, if you haven't already, get the myfitnesspal app. it showed me how much i was really eating vs what i thought i was eating. I had the band for 7+ years and maintained 89lbs.... but when the band was removed due to a slip.... i gained 30lbs. Sure it took 2.5 years... but i couldn't lose it. I thought i was doing everything right.....Then when i started the process of revising to the sleeve, i started logging everything.... I found i was making bad choices, overeating and not exercising as much as i thought i was. That was in July, i got sleeved Aug 28th...... and things are back on track.... but i'm still logging in my food and exercise. Keeps me accountable. Band 2009 SW: 232, LW: 130, weight at removal 143... Sleeve 2019 SW: 173.5 , Today 144.4..... Goal is to get back to 143 (1 more lb to go) or 140 if poss.

Can we just be for real ???

Raises hand and says Yes.... One of my main motivations was to look better. I was in a very long marriage and we would go a year with having sex 1-2x's. I thought, if only i could lose the weight he would find me more attractive and life would be great. So in 2009 I got banded, lost 89lbs (100 but to hard to maintain). Went from 232 to 143. But instead of getting better my marriage fell even more apart. He couldn't handle the attention i was getting. And to be honest, it was intoxicating.... i loved it. We divorced in 2017 after 26 years. Fast forward.... 2017, flu/stomach bug = slipped band. Fast forward Aug. 2019 173.5lbs..... Sleeve. Todays weight 144.4 Starting to feel sexy again. Sept. 2019 remarried and feeling great..... bring on 52 years old... i'm ready

    Gastric sleeve journey

I found that adding a green smoothie to my morning routine helped me (go to bathroom too!) -- 7/22/19 -- 268 to 11/5/19 - 207. I have lost a lot of inches (didn't take them unfortunately before surgery). I am down from 20/22 to a 16. Definitely get you a few small saucer plates (the ones they sit a coffee cup on). Good luck!

    Surgery Date

Again, being nosy--are you using advanced surgical partners? I saw them when I started having problems with my 10 year old lap band. I liked the doctor but his office staff was a mess- wouldn't return calls when they said they would, no follow through for scheduling tests, etc. And they incorrectly told me that since I've already had a bariatric procedure that Medicare won't pay for a revision. Medicare didn't pay for the first one so why would they balk at a revision? Anyway I knew I needed the band removed regardless of whether or not I could get a revision and was unhappy with ASPs office, so I did some "doctor shopping" on the internet and found Virginia Bariatric Surgery Center in Reston and their office is so helpful and better informed and helpful than the other. I've said before that there are lots of good doctors out there, but if the "front half" of the practice is a disaster it doesn't matter how good the "back half" is! Laura

Can we just be for real ???

There is a hierarchy of needs in WLS just as in life-a Maslow's Hierarchy of sorts. I think it looks quite a lot like this one below that I just made up. We all advance on the rungs at different rates. And for me, the looking/feeling sexy came WAY after a lot of other "stuff." It was not my primary motivation. But each of us have different reasons for our WHY. They are all valid regardless of where they plug into the ladder (hierarchy). I couldn't even address what I call my "vanity pound weight loss" = the last 10-15lbs, until I was there...and that took me 140ish pounds and 2 years to get there... WLS Hierarchy of NEEDS Ladder: BONUS! Yahtzee!!! The thirteenth (bonus) rung up from there is SELF-ACTUALIZATION 12. The twelfth rung up from there is to REACH PERSONAL WEIGHT GOALS 11. The eleventh rung up from there is a DESIRE TO CLAIM SEXINESS/BEAUTY/ALL-THAT-AND-A-BUCKET-OF-CHEESE 10. The tenth rung up from there is an INCREASED DESIRE FOR ACTIVITY/SOCIALIZATION 09. The nineth rung up from there is SHOPPING (hehe) 08. The eighth rung up from there is not feeling afraid to be EXPOSED RATHER THAN INVISIBLE 07. The seventh rung up from there is IMPROVED/NEW RELATIONSHIPS/JOB/FINANCES 06. The sixth rung up from there is CHANGING NEEDS/DEMANDS FROM RELATIONSHIPS 05. The fifth rung up from that is IMPROVED CONFIDENCE 04. The fourth rung up from that is FEELING BETTER EMOTIONALLY 03. The third rung up from that is FEELING BETTER PHYSICALLY 02. The second rung up from that is GETTING OFF MEDS 01. The bottom foundation for most of us is: HEALTH IMPROVEMENTS
