  1. I have been over weight most of my life, and I have been thinking about my options lately...I have lots of questions and I live about 4 hours from the tbnc I would love to go for a consultation, but I still don't know if this is what I should be doing. I am also concerned about cost...nothing I have been reading talks about the cost, does OHIP cover any costs, I don't want to get my hopes up to only realize that I can't afford this....
  2. Congratulations on making this journey. It will be one of the most amazing times of adventure and discovery how amazing your body truly is. First off with the pudding cups, I would be very careful of eating the whole thing in 15 minutes. Try to take it in over 20 or 30. To help with this I highly recommend eating with a baby spoon. I know it sounds rediculous, but it will keep you from taking too big a bite and hurting your stomach that way, but it will also slow down your eating. When eating with this spoon I also highly recommend setting the spoon down between bites. It sounds like for the most part with the liquid your are on the right track. The best I can offer is to keep at it. The 1 0z shot glass ever 8 minutes was my goal and my life revolved around what I was drinking for weeks afterwards. I know it is super frustrating now, but it does get better as your stomach expands slightly and you are able to take on more and more liquid at a time you wont have to be constantly drinking to get the same amount. At this stage you could probably also start eating things like highly whipped regular or sweet potatos and others. You could even try things like pureed Beans or cauliflower. I have a ton of reciped I came up with during this stage if you are interested. I even have a recipe for Protein Fruit Sorbet on my blog that is similar to the Dole Whip that is so popular at Disney Parks. Great job on staying active. I know the scale is the go to benchmark right now, but you need to try and only look once a week. Believe me, I know this is hard, but your body is going through some insane changes and your weight will fluctuate. There will be days when you don't lose anything and you feel like you could take on the world and there will be days where you feel like crap and lose 5. Your body is going to be going through so many crazy changes it can't keep up with itself. Don't try to fixate on the scale. I recommend using "Goal Clothes." Clothes that don't quit fit and then when you are having a rough day try them on. You will notice each time it will get closer and closer to fitting until ultimately you are down a whole size and can wear the crap out of it. Best of luck, I hope this helps, and if you have any additional questions let me know.
  3. I have completed my 6 month preop visits with my primary care physician and I am currently waiting in approval from my insurance company. I am so excited and anxious I can hardly stand it. I have been overweight my entire life and have struggled to lose weight and keep it off. I have 4 year old twin girls and I am doing this to be healthier for them. My last step is to stop smoking, I am struggling with this but know I have to do it. I have been reading posts on here for awhile and decided it was time to post one myself. Looking forward to this journey and getting to know some of you.

Need a Fill vs. Controlling Eating

I really think "I can still eat a 10" vegie sub" is not quite the right way to look at it. I really dont believe that any food is totally bad or off limits, or that being able to eat something specific that you fidn to be a problem food necessarily indicates you need a fill. But if you can wolf down a 10" sub really fast that's probably lack of restriction. If you can eat it with some effort then, I think we get bands to control our eating, and to eat less overall. If you eat a 10" vegie sub and nothing else till dinner and then at a moderate dinner, you exercise regularly and are losing weight slowly and steadily then SO WHAT if you can eat a sub? We didnt get bands with the express purpose of not being able to eat a specific food, it just doesnt work quite that way. I can still eat pizza, but only a very little, I can eat a burger but not a whole one. I do it occasionally. Generally they take so much freaking effort its not worth it and I dont really enjoy it, but I can do it. But once in a while, what does that matter. Chances are, if you cant sort out choosing healthy foods MOST of the time, and having those yummy things just as treats, when you go tighter, you will simply find other easier unhealthy foods to eat that will go down if the sub wont, the band doesnt MAKE you choose salad, vegies, fruit etc. So yes, to a degree you do need to control it yourself. It takes both - good restriction and some reasonable control. But of course, good restriction makes self control easier. Its just not necessarily a problem to eat pizza occasionally, unless it sends you spiralling out of control.

    Finally the stall is over!!

I'm in one now. 8 weeks post op and have been the same weight for 2 weeks. Plugging away though. Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 192 GW 135
  6. I had written you a long length post and I hit a wrong button and it disappeared. I am just going to say I speak from experience when I say please seek help. I had no idea where to go in the early 1970's to seek the help I need for the same things you expressed here. I was 21 and had lost 107 pounds through a diet program and had never had any relationships with men of any kind until after I lost my weight. The emotional turmoil and uncomfortableness got to be too much for me after a huge emotional hurt from a man. I ate myself from 170 up to 497. It destroyed my life and I know that if I had some counseling on how to deal with my new body and men I never would be suffering as I am today/ Please don't do as I have done, you have worked too hard to stop. Seek the help you need. I will be following this post and if you wish to email me privately feel free to do so. I have been in your shoes and am here for you.
  7. So, I reached one-derland weeks ago and I've been hitting every milestone that I thought was impossible. Now, I'm panicking: I have not been thin in a couple of decades and the thought of it is terrifying. I'm now a size 12 (from a size 22/24 in June), but I cannot fathom being smaller than this. I feel as though I'm not ready and/or I cannot cope with this. It's shocking to say this, but I'm not sure I want to be thin (which is what I was desperately trying to achieve). The attention is starting to make me afraid and uncomfortable, especially around men, and the new, form-fitting clothes are making me scared and self conscious (I actually find myself wanting to put on my old, plus-size clothes that obviously do not fit). Has anyone else gone through this? What should I do?
  8. I can only echo some of the other comments. One thing I would add is to find a Protein drink you like, because you will be drinking it often. I had to experiment. I like Muscle Milk light myself, but I don't want to sound like a paid spokesman. It works for me, you have to find what works for you. As was said, you should get off the carbs in advance. You want to help your surgeon, right? Shrink your liver by reducing/eliminating carbs before surgery. As they say, no soda/beer. I do like to drink on occasion, and I've already decided that once the dust settles after surgery, I'm drinking cranberry and vodka and bloody mary's, and maybe a bourbon and Water. But realize, these are not going to help you lose any weight.
  9. Band slipped after 3.5 years. Initially lost 75 lbs in first 9 months. Been slowly gaining about half of it back. Would like to hear from others who have gone thru second surgery and kept the band. Any surprises? What was your weight loss experience the 2nd time around?
  10. Hi everyone. My name is Jae and I'm awaiting answers from my insurance company (Group Health). So far so good, but we'll see how it goes once I meet with my doctor in a couple of weeks. I like many of you, can take the weight off, but pile it on again and then some. I'm tired of the yo-yos. My health is turning for the worse due to my weight and I want to enjoy life with my husband and our daughter. I need to lose 50% of my weight to finally have a "healthy" BMI. It's going to be a long road ahead, but I'm certain I can do it this time. I have the drive and support I need. Now just to work on the "tools" to reach my goal! Not sure what else to say for now....but I'll be here
  11. Sorry you are having such a rough time. Wanting to get back on track is the first step. I am wondering if you do need a fill. Getting stuck every once in a while doesn't mean you don't need to be a little tighter. You may be eating too fast, not chewing enough et... It might just be the food as well, bread and pasta can be very difficult. If you are having a lot of hunger I would go in and talk with your surgeon. Too get back on track you might want to do a liquid diet of low carb protein shakes for 2-3 days. I would then eat a low carb, high protien, low fat diet. Lots of lean meat and veggies. Berries for fruit are relatively low in carbs. If you need a fill, you can worry about portions once you have better restriction. Excersise is a key factor. It works wonders for weight loss. If you are not already doing it I highly reccomend you start. Start out slow and gradually increase your duration. If you can afford a personal trainer I highly reccomend it. I meet with a trainer 3 days a week for weights. It really helps hold me accountable. I was lucky to find someone I just love. The half hour goes by pretty fast. Well that's my advice, remember loosing weight comes down to calories in and calories out. That being said, I also believe a low carb diet helps as well. Keeps your blood sugar from spiking. Hope all this helps and best wishes!
  12. I had my band placed 6 weeks ago. First 2 weeks were great! Then the trouble started - couldn't keep anything down for 3 weeks, was told it was "soft tissue" swelling - last week doc went it to "unbuckle" the band - and I came out with a drain, NG tube, antibiotics, and doc said "your stomach looked like a hard piece of rubber - an abscess had formed next to the band btw my stomach and liver - finally went home - no band - just lots of antibiotics to hopefully keep the abscess from returning and aspiration pneumonia in the process. Lap band surgery - $3200 for "what insurance doesn't pay"; complications - 1 week out of work with no pay - hopefully living through this with no more hope of losing weight - priceless. I have lost 25lbs in this nightmare of 6 weeks and still keep nothing down except liquids - and sometimes the antibiotics. The band is an invasive, tricky surgery and although my surgeon states she has never seen someone reject the band like this - I don't believe her. I would NEVER recommend this surgery to anyone. I said 2 months ago that I was going to lose the weight or die trying - it looks like the latter is more likely to be true. Orange Coast Memorial Center for Obesity is not where you want to place your life.

    It's Happening

*tears* thanks gorgeous! i know its the right thing to do i know it is, i guess i need to spend some time on my head getting it to follow what my body needs too... i just want it so badly but im shocking at sticking it out... this is the only way for me... do you find it gets easier as you see the weight coming off.. i mean u've been banded less than a week and you've lost that much weight.. i hope its the same for me... hugs from the land down under x
  14. I'm at the three month post op mark and I feel like my weight loss is at a very slow crawl! The day of surgery i weighted 226 and I am now at 180. YEAY I'm in onederland but, I feel the weight is not coming off as it should be. Is this normal? Or has the head games been getting the better of me? I know I need to be eatting more protein I work out daily and get plenty of fluids. There are weeks where I just stay at the same weight.
  15. My name is Mel, I am 31 years old & I have just finished all my requirements prior to submitting my Prior Authorization request to Insurance. Before I do, I have to tell my patient advocate if I want the Rouxen-Y or the Sleeve. I am a little unsure. I am 270 lbs, 5'3", I am at my highest. I am lucky to have an insurance plan that covers WLS at 90%. I recently entered into a relationship with a great man and her is very supportive of my choice to do this. However, recently the topic of children came up. Now, I had my tubes tied 7 years ago and I have 2 boys ages 7 & 11. He, however, does not have any children. And he wants to have 1, just 1. Now I have read online how you should wait between 12-18 months post surgery before you try to have a baby. And I am currently researching TR & IVF options. I am doing all the research now so I know what I am getting into. I am wondering, has anyone else ever gone through this situation? If so, I am wondering, if I am planning to have a baby later is it best for me to.... 1. Rouxen-Y or the Sleeve? 2. Whats the weight gain like? will I regret it? 3. Will I be able to nourish an unborn baby adequately? 4. Will getting pregnant cause damage to my existing WLS? 5.... is there anything else I should consider? Any feed back is greatly appreciated. I really want to be able to make a good choice before I decide which surgery to go with.
  16. Because your Mother is a RN she should also know the consequences that comes along with being over 300 pounds. If you have tried and tried and you yo-yo most of your life, then something has to give. As a Mother she should be very concerned about her daughter and should be supportive in your decision. Surgeries, no matter how big or small can come with complications. Please, you can have your tonsils taken out and get a staph infection, its not just weight loss surgery. I got a total hip replaced years ago, I had my entire femur bone cut out, had my blood transfused back into me. I didn't choose to have this, it had to be done if I wanted to ever walk again. To answer your question, my family was very very supportive with my decison (especially my mother). why, because they thought my weight was killing me and was scared for my life... Best of luck to you in whatever decision you make,
  17. My surgeon didnt say anything about how much I should lose. I can, however, tell you that I started out at 321.6 lbs and now weigh 128 lbs. I look good at this weight – I could probably stand to lose another 8 lbs. My regular doctor said at 5’3 I should weigh between 113 and 140 lbs depending on muscle tone and body type. He also pointed out that I most likely only have 4 – 5 lbs of extra skin (the skin issue is slowly going away by the way), so if I include that, 117 – 144 would be considered healthy.

    New year new resolve

I've never blogged before but I feel the need for support and accountability of the members here. I've been banded since 10-7-09. I just went in Thurs for my 4th fill and just now am beginning to 'get it' I've been frustrated with not losing as fast as I expected....15 lbs so far.. all post band. When I went in for my first fill 6wks post op she put in 1cc and I swear I couldn't pass a sip of water. just gurgle gurgle so she let out .5cc and has been going slow since just .5 per visit. So now I'm at 5.4 in a 10cc band and this is all coming together now. Oh Yeah !! after 4-5 bites I'm done and fine with it. Love this feeling. Still dealing with head hunger and just the 'need' to eat. It truly is an addiction. My doc gave me a script for Welbutrin and it has really helped. Just a little bit of help to feel calm and not crave food. I used this when I did the phentermine thing a couple of years ago. I lost 60 lbs. but you know the routine...gained back all but 5 before my first lap band consultation. Anyway that's a bit about me. I feel excited that finally I understand 'restriction' and can see that this thing works.. I know there will be ups and downs (literally) but I have a good feeling about this. I have some questions about getting enough food. My gosh it seems like semi-starvation. I guess that's ok huh?

  20. My advice is this. If I were you, I would not worry too much about gaining weight. Going on the trip will be stressful, which will tighten your band. Also, don't pig out. Enjoy yourself, but in moderation. Have fun, and when you come back, diet like normal people do when they go on vaccation and eat too much. Don't be afraid to be normal. And another thing, all that spicy food might upset your band and give you more restriction too. Do NOT get a fill before you leave...your doc is right. Stop stressing and have fun. Keep busy and don't make the vaccation about food. I am excited for you- have a blast!

Any Buddies In Houston Or Not????

I went to the official meet and greet with Dr. Hollis today. A lot of good questions and answers. More than anything he said this is a tool and that we needed to follow the rules for this to be successful. I am very excited. I hope to lose the weight I want.

    Disney World!

That is so awesome! I live about 2 hours away from Disney and it has been very hot. I am going back once I hit my goal ... it's gonna be so different not lumbering around in the heat with all this weight, being able to walk around without running out of breath and being able to fit on all the rides! Congratulations on your weight loss and I will pray for blue skies ahead and hope you have a vacation of a lifetime!

    What happens in 20 years.....?

From what I've researched thus far, there is no known life expectancy of the band because it's only been around in the states for 10 years and it's only 12 years old in France. I think about the risk factors too and of the fact that once it's on it's there for life. If removed, patients turn to their old eating habits and gain the weight back and then some. Apparently, your stomach gets a little bigger after you've had the band for a while. So, if the band is removed you're able to hold more food. It's a permanet solution. I wasn't too thrilled about that, but then I think about my health NOW and how I seriously need to lose this weight. Like the previous reply-ers - you have to think about your health and not worry about the band itself. I'm going for my surgery towards the end of Nov and I try not to think about the fact that this thing will be in my body forever. I only think about the health benefits. I'd like to be alive long enough to find out just how long does this thing last... Good luck!
  25. I can't believe it! At 154 I will be in a normal BMI range and as of today I am more than halfway there!! Sleeved on Oct 11. This has not been an easy journey and I hope that folks who are still pre op will be conscious that this was definitely not as simple as get sleeved then magically lose weight, and my BMI was lower than many who get surgery so i didn't have quite as much to lose to start with. It has been rough, but I NEVER would've lost this weight without it. It usually takes me about 3-4 months to lose my first 20 lbs (slow loser) and I've lost more than double that in less than 3 months! This surgery has completely changed my life and I cannot wait to get to a healthy weight. I know that at 155 all of my old "skinny" (skinny for me anyway) clothes will fit and once I get there I will still be working to get to my goal weight but I will be comfortable in my skin again. I can't believe I'm halfway there already!!
