Week 5 Side View (-25 lbs)

    From the album: In Progress

  2. This is my first post on this site. I was banded in June; I have lost 50 pounds so far. I work out quite a bit. I find the weight just doesn't come off for me unless I am at the gym 3 or more times a week. I do one hour classes; I average about 4 days there per week. For me, classes are ideal because I don't like to work out. The classes are always different and I won't leave or quit in the middle if I get tired. If I'm on a treadmill, I tend to not push myself very hard. At first, I found myself modifying quite a bit of what the instructor was doing, but now I can keep up pretty well. I have a skinny friend with a heartrate monitor thingy and she burns around 600 calories per class. I figure I'm probably doing close to the same...I'm bigger so I burn more than she does, but I'm also not quite able to do as much of the high impact stuff she does yet...
  3. Well, I'm still a work in progress, but I can tell you that I lost the first 35 pounds with very little exercise. I thought this was going to be a cakewalk! Then... well... it all came crashing to a stop. So I started riding my bike moderately but the weight loss was a slow crawl... Then I joined a gym and started doing Spin classes. Whoa! That's when I found out what intense exercise means... I thought I was going to die for the first 3 classes. Then it started getting easier and I had to push myself harder with more resistance. And now I do 5-7 spin classes a week, combined with a small amount of strength training. I went for my 5th fill last week and had gone from a standstill to losing 17 pounds... My fitness level is getting better every week and my heart rate recovery time is falling consistently. I'm with Jachut on this... You have to challenge yourself. If you walk 2 miles along the same path all the time - your body will become efficient at doing it and you'll no longer get the same result. The harder you work - the higher the result - plain and simple. Brad
  4. I had to exercise 6 days a week. I have a very slow metabolism and if I didn't exercise, there is no way I would have lost or kept losing. I did the stair master, walking/jogging on the treadmill, and the eliptical machine anywhere between 30-60 min per day, as well as weight training. Building muscle will make our bodies burn more calories even at rest.

    3 weeks Banded

Its been 3 weeks and I have to say that I am pleased with my band so far. The hardest part for me was the liquid stage but now that I am on the puree/mushie stage, which pretty much for me equals soups, fish and very soft veggies...life is great. Its so weird that although I have no fill yet, I can only eat small amounts and dont feel hungry all that often. Even this weekend, I was at a party and told myself that I would cheat and got a peice of fried chicken...after two bites and chewing for a million times...I decided that I wasnt hungry and no longer desired the chicken and put it down. Ohhh and the weight is starting to slowly come off... Things are on the up and up!

    6 months in

:thumbup:okay so i am now a little over six months into post op, and i have so much energy. unfort. my back doesn't keep up. as crazy as it seems i love mowing the lawn, have been hiking and even to a few very fast paced concerts. i am now down 81 lbs and can get into a 22, it is an accomplishment. but every now and then i feel like what the heck i still look big, but i remember it wasn;t how i looked that bothered me but what i couldn' do and then i am ok. it is so hard to get everything in and some days i still do nothing but the drinks. i am supposed to go next week for my fill but think maybe i will just discuss the feeking of irratation in my incision instead. i hope everyone else is having great sucesses!

    How do you handle hiccups?

Well i usually get hiccups alot and bad since I always ate and drank to fast. I would get them really deep too! I have been banded a week and haven't had the hiccups at all...probably because I slowed down my eating habits. If you do I have a hug pillow that I hug to my stomach when i sneeze and cough and that helps a lot too! Good luck with your journey into bandland

    I Frustrate Myself!!!

I identify with both of you here. im having more sweets and chocolate than i should be. my weight loss is there but minimal....( but Im grateful for every bit of weight loss.) I dont mind the rate of weight loss but do mind the fact that im still having issues about what im eating.Plus the fact that im not lasting four hours before being hungry again... and thats after having a protein breakfast. I have a fill in two weeks time. that will make me four ccs (3cc plus 1/2 plus 1/2 coming up i hope) .... im hoping that this fill will make a big difference to the amount i eat as well. I have to say.... ive had more soups this year.. remember, its winter in Australia... more home made soups... and ive been having more than a bowl at a sitting, thats for sure. Thats definately not a cup full... way more than a cup. More like two good cups full. I know that im hopeless keeping blogs... im not even consistent with the weight loss site that so many are using on here. Im grateful that i can share on here though. By the way, i had a drs appointment on friday. this was to my referring dr. I havent seen her in months. I was weighed and she was so excited about my weight loss . In the country areas where i come from lap band surgery isnt seen much... so she was excited to see the results and also to talk with me about it all. Only problem... i have a bad UTI... blood in urine etc.. (TM information.. lol, sorry)... Ive also been dizzy quite a bit, some days worse than others. It was a bit confusing for me as i have some hypertension, so that was making a clear diagnosis harder. the dr reckons not enough fluids being drunk, that the UTI and not enough fluid can cause the dizziness and also the infection. So now im on antibiotics. i hate taking them but we have to get this cleared up. Im trying to get as much fluid in as possible as well... Now im wanting the infection to be cleared up and Im hoping that this next fill will help me to last at least four hours between meals.
  10. If you're on IV fluids you won't get dehydrated. Do what the nurses tell you to do. Your stomach has been cut and sutured/stapled, of course there's going to be some blood. It looks like more when mixed with saliva and water. When you get home, follow the food progression exactly. Scar tissue needs to form around the sutures and or staples in your stomach to strengthen and heal. If you overdo it in the first few weeks and put pressure on the suture line, the scar tissue fibers can break down. Congrats on your revision!!!!

    AB's Journey

Youve done good. I had my surgery last month also. But ive had to have more pain meds, 2 ivs, because i cant get my fluids in. I cant even worry about the Proteins yet, theyre just concerned about my Fluid intake right now. My stomach is still so tight that i can only get like 4-5 sips and im full for about 1hr. I think alot has to do with i cant grt a regular bowel movement as of yet and ive taken everything. Ive had ibs before the surgery so it hasnt helped. Its crazy when all u can pray for is to be able to go to the bathroom....lol But i didnt go out and buy a scale for my house, i dont keep up like that. Last week when i was able to go from a size 3x to 1x, i go by my clothes. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  12. I'm so anxious to get started. I have an *** so my PCP had to refer me to the surgeon to start the program and monitored diet thing. I had some blood work done and my cholesterol is off the charts ... over 300, my vitamin D is too low, my liver ALT was too high. I'm falling apart. Even my sleep apnea seems to be getting worse. My first intro seminar to the program is in a couple weeks and I can't wait!

    Today

Well, today I didnt lose anything...I think that I went under my regular calorie count yesterday and messed up my bodys way of thought...So today I started counting my calories today to make sure that I got all of them in today...So far I am about 620 calories for today and still have dinner to go...I might end up having to have a little snack before dinner so that I can get a few extra calories...I just dont understand how my surgeon expects me to keep to about 1200 calories a day with just 3 small meals and no snacking...It just dont add up to me...Well, I have several girls at work on a diet now and they are doing a grapefruit diet along with a regular diet..So, its basically eating a grapefruit before each meal but if I were to do that I wouldnt be able to eat my meal...So they let me know that they had read that I could do the sugar free grapefruit juice or find some grapefruit pills to do before I ate my meals...So I will go out tomorrow and find me some sugar free grapefruit juice (if there is such a thing) and try it for several weeks and see how it does me...Something new to try and there is just telling if it will work or not but it never hurts to try

    13 Days til Banding!!!

Today is day 3 of pre-op. I stayed within my calories yesterday, but overdid it on carbs!! I thought all the dinners in my freezer were less than 20 grams carbs; I cooked one then looked at the carbs: 43!! oh no, should have pitched it but I went ahead and ate it. Then had blueberries for snack, and they are higher carb too. Some friends came over and brought a watermelon, I went ahead and ate some because I didn't want to have to explain. She asked twice what kind of diet I was on and I said predominantly liquid, she wanted to know what kind, blah blah, so I finally went ahead and told them I was going to have lapband surgery in two weeks. (Wasn't planning to tell very many people, but I'm not good at making up stories as I go along) Anyway, I was surprised, she said it would be good for my health; I about fell over in surprise. Another protein review: 1) Whey Gourmet Creamy Orangesicle Swirl - just 'ok'. Too sweet tasting for me. I mixed it with ice and water; maybe should have used a little more water. I wouldn't buy it but others would probably like it. (It came in my Bariatric Eating sample pak. My goal for the rest of the diet: STICK TO IT!! Don't overdo the carbs. I am feeling full; however, the day I had my regular meal at lunchtime, I was hungrier in the evening, so think I will stick to having the regular meal in the evening since I feel fuller longer.

    3 weeks post op

Remember, everyones plan is different. My plan allows for adding textures like lean ground beef, shredded chicken or pork , and flaky fish starting in week 3.
  16. Hey guys, I’m new to the site, I’m 3 weeks post op. I have been on liquids as a choice. However I’ve wanted to begin eating. I’ve been consistent in weight loss daily and I’ve exercised by walking for 20 minutes. I want a meatball but I’m afraid. Does anyone have ideas?

    Approved Today

After bugging BCBS of IL and TeamCare, I was approved. My dr's office submitted everything last week on 4/3/18 and I was approved today! I am so overjoyed. Cannot wait to talk to my Dr's office and get this surgery scheduled. My son graduates from college on 5/12 so I'm going to wait until after his graduation to have it done. I cannot wait. I'm so thrilled! Literally feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    Aproved!

OMG!! I received approval from my insurance today!! I am sooo happy. I was in such a slump...this has been such a roller coaster so far. After being denied by BCBS of IL a few weeks ago (said I needed more documentation for my two co morbidities) I went back to my primary MD, had more labs done and resubmitted. I called the insurance yesterday and was told it was denied again because there wasn't anything new submitted. I very nicely started to ask questions about the new info we had sent...hight cholesteral, started on new med, etc. She had not seen that and started to look thru my submission again. She agreed to send an email to the doctor that decides. Today I received a call from her and the new information was enough to get it approved for the vertical sleeve. I am so happy. This just goes to prove what everyone else has said...keep trying. Surgery date won't be till around 1/13.
  19. Thanks for the responses. It seems a little counter intuitive to me that after the swelling-restriction goes away, then comes the fill-restriction, which somehow allows for greater calorie intake. It must come not from the volume of food eaten but by being able to eat from a higher quality selection. I am definitely looking forward to getting my protein from chicken next week instead of just whey!

    Feeling down

I believe that you're feeling down for no good reason. You seem to be living with some misconceptions about band surgery and what follows. You're also contradicting yourself, if I understand what you're writing. I hope I can help you get to a better place. The first weeks after surgery are about healing from it, not about losing weight. That you lost seven pounds in the first four (is that it?) weeks is quite nice. Lost weight is lost weight. Most people don't feel that "a lot" has changed in the early days. For most, getting the band adjusted to the point where it is a good, working partner takes at least a few adjustments. It may also involve adjusting to remove Fluid. The process is more an art than a science. I know one person who reached his goal and has maintained it for many years with an empty band and never one adjustment. He is quite the exception. Even when a band is at optimal fill, it can change, either suddenly needing more or less saline. I have no doubt that this sounds discouraging to you, but better to know it now than never. In fact, all band people should be aware of this, among other things, from the very first. You say that your appetite and eating pattern has changed. This tells you that the band has begun to pick up steam. A good thing. You last weighed on 13 July, so you don't know what further loss you may have had since the seven lbs. As you seem to feel little control over matters now, I suggest that you try to eat meals on a regular schedule. It's also important to use a food tracker and enter everything. My Fitness Pal is popular and people say it's easy to use. I use the tracker at sparkpeople.com, a large website dedicated to health, fitness, weight loss and the like. It also has a fitness tracker. The site doesn't espouse surgery for weight loss, but I find that no problem. There are "teams" of people who have had surgery. Livestrong.com is a similar site. The amount of saline in an adjustment or in a band is meaningless on its own. What matters is having the amount that will, again, make for a good partnership. You're in good shape.

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels

Hey bandster family, Time for my morning rant session. Like I said last week , I had a fill on Thursday (it's going pretty well). This band is definetly a tool, as you can tell by reading some of the success stories, some of us get the hang of it alot sooner than others. I've realized that some of the things I could eat last week with ease, don't work now that I've had this last fill. I had to learn the hard way that chicken (no matter how it's cooked) is not my friend. I had 1 drumstick from el pollo loco yesterday (1 lousy drumstick), didn't even eat the whole thing, and it was a wrap. Chest started getting tight...... and well yall know the rest. It's crazy, I've been pretty good about staying away from chicken, but for some reason, yesterday I just had to have it. So, I went to the grocery store last night, and stocked up on some of the old faithfuls, like shrimp, fish and tuna, and yes I did buy some chicken (can you say gluten for punishment), I plan on making chicken salad by boiling the chicken then putting it in the food processor (that's the only way it goes down and stays .. Well until later my bandster family, (hope this helps someone along their journey)

    Anybody else experiance this?

You just need to keep sipping all day. I have noticed over time that when I am not drinking enough water my weight loss stalls. I have to drink to keep losing.

    I Frustrate Myself!!!

I feel like I should start a blog but I'm just not sure I'm comfortable with that...so instead I'll share here. I am so frustrated with myself right now! I have been falling back into old bad habits like snacking when I'm not hungry, hiding my eating, and making bad food choices. I am horrible at keeping a journal. I tell myself it is something I will use when I hit a plateau and when I do, I journal for a day at best. Yes, I've tried several apps on my phone, taking pictures of my food and the basic writing down what I eat but none of them last long. When I went to adjust my weight tracker tonight I realized I had only lost 1 pound in 4 weeks. I admit it is better than gaining but I need to get back on track. My next PA appointment is September 13th and at this point I do plan to get a fill. I have not had one yet and know that could be part of the problem. I know it is not the entire problem though! I am battling eating past being satisfied and into "I'm stuffed". Today has probably been the best day for me this week. Hopefully just getting what is in my head out into "cyberspace" will help me get back on track. I also keep looking forward to September 4th, that magical day when school starts and I can hopefully get back into a more predictable routine! Thanks for reading my rant!

    Two week stall?

Here is a good article about why stalls happen: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php
  25. Hello! I am new to this, and I don't really have anyone that I know who has had the surgery, or wanted to so I have so many questions and I'm hoping I can make some friends here who may be able to help! I started my diet on September 4th in preparation to see a see an obesity specialist --- I am in my pre-approval stage, I saw an obesity specialist on Oct. 2nd who took my weight and set me up with tons of testing, and information. She specializes in using methods other than surgery to help with extreme weight loss. I did not know that when ibsaw her, so I attended a bari-seminar and was assigned a patient advocate who told me the specialist I was working with does not recommend surgery for anyone - which is confusing bc she told me she thought it was a good option for me. Now she referred me to a family doctor and I am set to go see him this Friday Oct. 23 - My insurance calls for Three months of a medically supervised diet and I don't know what date to start from? Or even what the insurance calls for as far as a medically supervised diet? If I choose not to go with Jenny Craig or weight watchers, and just do the plan my Dr. and I agree on - does that count? Or do I have to see a nutritionist once a month too? I have an appointment with a nutritionist, but the dates will not line up exactly! I am so confused, and between the politics of the specialist, the patient advocate telling me that the diet starts the date the Dr puts in his notes and not to worry - I am worried and a little confused! Can anyone help?
