2 days until mushies...
belld replied to irene2502's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
mashed potatoes first, then scrambled egg, soup, pudding, applesauce today. I am at three weeks on Wednesday when I can "officially start mushies. I plan on branching out to some well cooked veggies..probably stewed squash first...yummy. I have been satisfied with my weight loss so far so I hesitate to move on but I know I should. My dietician says it is always better to eat your protein than drink it. I am not supposed to move ahead with chicken and other dense proteins until the 1st of September. I am looking forward to it. -

I desperately need your story if your band didn't work at first.
crystal525 replied to sdpressl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have always been a slow loser. I'm 19 months out now (my surgery was November 2008), and I'm down somewhere around 75 pounds (I've met my initial goal--I'm not sure of what my new goal is, but I'll know when I get there). I feel great, I look good:tongue:. My confidence is off the charts like never before in my life. I get compliments every day. And--my doctor has ALWAYS been happy with my progress. I usually lost anywhere from 2-4 pounds per month. I even gained some months. My doctor and I discussed each loss/gain as they came and I was often disappointed in my band, and myself in the beginning -- almost the whole first year (even if I lost a few pounds I didn't feel it was enough). My doctor always said it was normal--he's happy with ANY loss. But now I am extremely happy also. I've had to learn patience and to look at the positives...I wasn't gaining for once in my life! Or dieting!!! Also--If you lose too fast and you have a lot to lose, you are more likely to have loose skin. I am totally happy with where I am now. I was an 18-20 in the beginning and now I'm in 12's...soon to be moving to 10s. I also had to come to the conclusion that (even though I knew this going in) that this was not magic and that I would have to work it. I am one that has to exercise. I love the feeling though of not feeling like I am on diet. I eat whatever I want (and can--I've not been able to tolerate bread) in moderation. I've never been overly strict on myself which also contributes to my slower weight loss I'm sure. I don't limit myself by telling myself that I'm on a diet and I can't have xxx. That's why I chose the band. And I'm glad every day that I did. Give it time, and good luck. -
2 wks post op..can't see weight loss

I read on someone's post that their doctor said it is common for weight loss to slow or stop during puree and mushy stage until you start eating more solid protein. Hang in there! -
Do You Feel Like You Did The Right Thing?
ThruThickandThin replied to ThruThickandThin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm very happy for everyone here who are successfully losing the weight! It gives me hope that I too will be a successful lap band patient! I've only lost 5lbs since i've been banded (9/11) and I'm hoping with my first fill I will actually lose more.. "more" to the point that I will actually reach my short term goal of being under 200lbs by mid december. Sometimes I wonder "Did the surgeon forget to put the band in?" My appetite is so severe that I've been eating.. and eating well! With out any complications... Idk what to do, I do have my good days and that usually happens when someone compliments me on my weight loss.. but then I have my bad days (like today) when I eat solid foods when I shouldn't. Maybe, I should go back to replacing two meals with Protein shakes?? I feel like that's the only thing that works when it comes to losing weight. But s**t, does that mean I have to be the special cases that stays on Protein Shakes? Has anyone else had a severe appetite before their first fill? And find that the fill really did help? I have a meeting with my dietician this week and boy am I nervous! This is harder than I thought.. like really hard! Love, Keep hope alive -
He needs to lose weight too but won't try...
BeachBabe replied to jingleboob's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think that being 50 pounds overweight is that much. You can not control him and should ease up on him. Focus on yourself and your weight loss. I still am shopping for food for my family and buying my husband's favorite foods. You can't expect him to lose weight just because you are. Relax and leave him alone. He is not doing anything bad or wrong. We all know how weak food can make us. -

BetsyB replied to jingleboob's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Knowing that he pressured you to have surgery with promises to care for himself properly---and that he's now giving you a hard time for things like Protein powder--puts a bit of a different spin on it, for sure. I understand your unhappiness--I really do. But no matter what, his weight loss ball is in his own court. Sometimes we learn who people really are the hard way--I hope this is not the case for you; I hope that your husband steps up to the plate and does what he needs to do, and you find that he's just another guy struggling with his own demons rather than someone who manipulates to get what he wants from others, without doing what he needs to do for himself (and his relationship--not that weight is a relationship issue, but coercing you to have a procedure you didn't really want? that's definitely a relationship issue). -
Do You Feel Like You Did The Right Thing?
dj112 replied to ThruThickandThin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's normal to mourn the loss of our favorite foods or alcohol. I was miserable being obese. I felt like the weight was a handicap holding me back from life, having a big full life. I made a list of all the things I was missing out on. As we all know life is very difficult being obese. Today I have a new perspective about food. Those foods that I loved caused me harm and kept me fat, miserable and alone. A piece of cake won't make me happy or bring me joy. Eating clean is an act of self love and I want to start respecting my body instead of stuffing it with food that is harmful to me. -
My doctor gave me a month to rest and I am so appreciative of that, I have a job where I constantly move, bend, lift and it requires me to be energetic. I am 8 days post op and my pouch is very tender and sore. All I am doing is just focus on school, walking and water/protein intake. I applaud those who work after a week or two. As for me- I love my healing time. I can't even drive my car and don't even want to. I wake up feeling tinges of pain somewhere in my sleeve and can't wait for that to go away, I just had the surgery and am in no rush for weight loss- I just want to heal properly and I would feel uncomftorable returning to work this early. So I got four blissful weeks off.

AM I DOING IT RIGHT?
KindaFamiliar replied to sa111antha's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've no idea if I had a stall or not. I was sleeved on Feb 25 and didnt weigh myself for three months... In fact, that's the only time I've weighed myself... I can feel and see how much I'm losing.. My goals are more long term than daily/weekly/or even monthly... My second weight check will be a week shy of 5 months post op (July 17).. I'm aiming for a 50kg (110 lb)loss... Good luck to you... band almost at capacity but I'm not
MacMadame replied to taffiegirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1) 45 lb. in 3.5 months is actually a good weight loss especially with a band. 2) Esophageal stacking is bad news and can lead to bad health problems. Personally, if I had it, I would be asking about a revision to another WLS, not going to see a shrink. (Though maybe your surgeon wants you to go for other reasons?) 3) Mini-bypass is WORSE NEWS. The surgery is dangerous and people gain their weight back. The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons does not include mini-bypass in their list of viable procedures and reputable docs don't do this procedure. But there are other WLS types you can revise to such as the regular bypass, the sleeve and the duodenal switch. Since you have done so well with the band, I would consider a restriction-only surgery like the sleeve over something with malabsorption like bypass or the switch. But those others are viable options too. Here's a chart that explains the differences: Weight-Loss Surgeries Compared -
Big Week One Weight Loss - Is This Normal? And Other Questions
elcee replied to aussikiwi's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It depends on how heavy you are and how much you have to lose. If you are 60lb overweight then no it would not be normal. If you are 160 or 260lb overweight then it is probably not unheard of. A lot of that weight could be Water as well. You may find that your weight loss slows down or even stops for a couple of weeks whilst your body catches up. If it does don't panic. No it is not OK to zoom through the steps the way you have unless you have been given the go ahead by your Dr.. I have just explained in another thread the reason why following your Dr's instructions postop are so important. I don't understand why people go through this process, trust the Dr with their lives and then as soon as they are out of surgery decide that it is OK to ignore what he/she has told them.Doing what we wanted prior to surgery is what made us obese in the first place. If we carry on thinking we know better and doing what we want then we are likely to stay obese. So hard is it may be i think you need to ensure that you are doing what you have been told you should do. Nobody said it would be easy, it's not, but we have all been there and got through it so I am sure you can too. It is such a short length of time in the big scheme of things and as soon as you start getting fills it will get easier. -
Anyone Eldest Hips Start To Bother Them After Loss?
*susan* replied to kvdme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You know, I wake up a lot at night with quite a bit of hip pain. I never attributed it to possibly having something to do with weight loss. Interesting, I am curious to see what others have to say. -
I go in on June 10th for my first fill. After asking my doctor how much of a fill he'd be giving me, he told me just 1cc.....I was hoping for more, as I have read else where on threads that they get 3cc on their first fills. I'm a bit jealous! But then again maybe not, as I don't want to much restriction to quickly. Hey everybody, is this normal for a 8cc band to get only 1cc on my first fill? Just wanting to lose more weight than I have so far......it's been a slow process. Had surgery on April 21st and have only lost 12 lbs so far.:crying: Oh yeah....how do I edit my ticker to change the weight loss???

Sleep Test and a few other questions
Lizalee replied to Diamondette's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sleep study - I believe why they order them, other than the fact that many severly obese people have sleep apnea (as described above) and can die from it, it's because most insurance companies won't pay unless there are some "co-morbidities" unless your BMI is extreme. I have it, and use a CPAP machine at night - the change was fantastic - I felt so much better with it, since I wasn't having to sleep sitting up and waking up dozens of time a night) So, you need to know if you have it so it can be treated immediately - leads to high blood pressure, stress on heart, and even death. And because it will be helpful information for anesthesia when they put you to sleep. And because it will be another marker of sucess of weight loss, because weight loss may eventually cure it. Pre surgery diet: My bariatric center required 3 month supervised diet in order to see if I could maintain a healthy diet and loose weight (follow the rules). Many insurance companies require it (some 6 mos to a year). If you can't maintein or loose weight before the band by following the diet, you may be a better candidate for gastric bypass, since the gastric bypass doesn't let your body absorb as many nutritients from the food and has more severe consequences if you over eat sweets (dumping syndrome). Another reason for the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver, which makes it easier for the surgeon. The presurgery diet is basically a healthy diet - low fat, high Protein - 60 - 80 grams of protein a day. Plus lthey wanted me to find a Protein shake that I liked because you need them for the first month after surgery until you can tolerate solids better. Some surgeons require a clear liquid diet before surgery for a week or two - mine didn't. I think that's to shrink the liver. PIll size: I break my pills in half and have no problem. I don't have a good restriction. Post op I used liquid paid meds. I have heard capsules can cause problems, but I haven't had any problem. Talk to your phamacist if concerned about med size - often they can be crushed or you can get liquids, but some meds shouldn't be taken out of the capsule or crushed. And by the way, since my surgery in April, I'm now OFF most my meds, so it's not a problem anymore! :-) Hope that helps. -

6 Weeks Post Op and No Fill Necessary?
mominkansas replied to meandtheboys's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
could you have had a band that had some Fluid in it the day of surgery? Either way, congrats great weight loss! -
Ask yourself "What am I committed to?". If you are committed to weight loss and being healthy, you will make healthy choices. Every time you go to put something in your mouth-- ask that question.
