  1. my name is Carla, I live on the Oregon coast. I have mobility trouble so it's hard to exercise out of the water, but I do swim twice a week. I was banded in Mexico 4/10/07. I've had a hard time of it with this band. I'm down almost 40lbs. I have a hard time with drinking so much water. I do eat good food but not much of it. I know I'm going to beat this weight issue and be healthy someday. I will not ever give up no matter how slow I lose the pounds. Good luck to all with a healthly life.

    Lap band weight pecentages

I think if I gave the % a lot of thought, I would have never had been banded. I knew I could do this, and not losing what *I* wanted to lose never crossed my mind. I ended up losing over 110% of my excess weight.

    I have a testimony/NSV

Hello Crishell, when did you have your surgery and how much weight have you lost? I love hearing these kinds of stories because they inspire me to keep going. Thanks in advance!
  4. Hi Cecilia. Welcome to LBT!! I've read about lots of people who have had skin reduction surgery after losing their weight. I think it kinda depends on your age, your genes, where you carry your weight, etc. I was the exact height and weight that you are when I began my weight loss journey in August 2008. I've lost 64 pounds and I feel GREAT!!! I had my blood pressure medication cut in half and I have so much more energy now. But....... I can tell that I will have some excess skin when I get to my goal. Not sure if I will be able to afford plastic surgery, but I've decided that the empty baggy skin is better than the tight fat filled skin was. Guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. This is a great place to come with your questions. Lots of very nice people here who can answer your questions, address your concerns, and give you support. People who know exactly what you've been through, what you are going through, and can help you know what to expect. I've made some very good friends here. Keep reading and asking. Good luck in your journey and if there is anything I can do to help you, let me know. Take care. Becky
  5. Congrats on your success! That is an awesome loss! I'm 2 years post op (and a couple months) and I've lost 145 pounds and have been maintaining below my goal weight for over a year. It's always good to hear the success stories to remind us that it is indeed possible and possible long-term :-)
  6. On April 24th I will have be banded for one year. Unfortunately, I feel like this has been a very disappointing year due to setbacks, second surgeries and finally having to switch Drs. I have had so many fills I lost count and then having to have a repair surgery and long story short I switched Drs. and got another fill. I am now at only 3cc and still able to eat a lot more but I think I'm finally seeing a tiny bit of restriction. I'm so lost and confused about what I should expect to see and feel considering I've been doing this for what feels like forever but not having success secondary to bad patient care from my dr. I gave up on losing weight when I had so many problems with no real support from my dr and now I don't know how to start over. I never truly learned the rules and never have had any negative results from not following the rules. I've never experienced being stuck, I've never thrown up, nothing. It's like I haven't had a band until now. I want to refresh my mindset and begin again but it's been such a bad experience thus far that I'm having trouble. Is there anyone with any advice or have been through something similar? I need support and though my sister and best friend have a lapband , I'm the only one to have such a bad experience and they can't really relate to me.
  7. It was so much less intimidating than I thought it would be! My surgeon and insurance don't require a specific amount of weight to lose aside from the two-week 1000 cal max diet right before the operation. I was terrified I would have to strictly justify everything I ate to an obsessive degree. Instead I was told to hit the 60-90g Protein target every day, sample different protein powders and shakes, to slow down eating so that a meal takes me 20-30 minutes to eat, to practice sipping Water slowly, and to start the protein first, veggies next, carbs only if you're still hungry pattern. And no meal skipping (I tend to skip breakfast). She said most people naturally start to lose weight even pre-surgery when they start these habits. I'll have a weigh-in next month but it doesn't sound like it'll be Draconian.
  8. Congrats @@katanne ! My first appointment with the dietician is in a couple of weeks. My plan is the same as yours... I don't have to lose a specific amount of weight (outside the 2 week liquid diet), but gaining is a deal breaker. I'm also lucky the only real thing my insurance requires is phone calls with their people.

    Yet Another Mile Stone

I feel the same way. This opportunity is the answer to a prayer and a dream. I wish my surgery was sooner rather than later but I'll take the wait ....to get rid of the "weight". lol Good luck to you.

    worrisome stats

I think there are "worrisome stats" for every procedure out there! I've had four pregnancies and three deliveries, a D&C, tubal ligation, and LASIK -- all came with risk of complication. Of course, these complication statistics should definitely be considered but we also need to consider the complication of NOT losing the weight. For me, nothing else was working and Lap-Band surgery seemed to be the only hope. They may invent something else that's even better (they already have better eye surgeries than six years ago) but I'll be glad that I got the surgery when I did. (Easy to say when I haven't had any complications, huh? ) There aren't a lot of long-term stats on the band yet so we're trusting the opinions of the developers and the doctors (some of whom have been banded themselves) when they say that the band should last the rest of lives, generally without complications. Your question, though, is one of the reasons I chose the band over other surgeries. It just seems more harmless and less likely to cause me problems later.

    Too few calories

Your calories are the total of the calories in your meals combined with the calories in your Protein shakes or other protein supplements. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So generally forget about counting calories but make sure you meet the protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes.
  12. I kept asking my Dr how would I know if my band slipped and he told me that I would continously be vomiting. I think what's happening is the same thing that happens to a lot of us. Right before your first fill you feel like there is no restriction at all. I even gained a couple lbs. before my first fill! Initially you are swollen from the surgery and I think your body is adjusting so sometimes it feels like you can't get anything down. Then as you heal you feel like you can eat anything. Once you go Wed you'll feel so much better. I only had 1 fill so far and I am scheduled Fri for my 2nd one and I can already feel that I need it !!! It's a matter of finding just how much you need in your band to make you able to eat but feel real full. Good luck!:wink2:
  13. I was wondering what's your follow-up plan after the sleeve? My doctor told me he would like me to stick to this plan: SURGEON: 1 month appointment, then every 3 months during the 1st year, then every 6 months during the 2nd year, then annual visits NUT & PSYCHOLOGIST: month 2, 4, 6 after the surgery, then every 6 months, then annual visits at year 3 and on. I'm wondering if this is enough? Of course I can always book an appointment if there's something going on. What I don't get though is, given that maintenance is much more difficult than losing weight, why do they limit the support so much in year 2-3 when you are likely to hit your goal and get into trouble...?
  14. I posted this in the insurance forum, but wanted to check in here also and see if anyone had any information. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or any advice for me. I had the LAP-BAND® surgery in June of 07. My company insurance was BCBS of NC at that time and they covered surgery and follow ups, fills etc. Later that year, my company went self insured thru med cost. At that time the HR department told me nothing would be covered related to weight loss or my follow ups. Because of this I have not been able to have regular follow ups and maintenance. I only go when I can save enough to. I spoke with our HR again, but she was no help and I also spoke with a company nurse and she said that she believes this is wrong. Because I did not change insurances and I have a medical device in me they should not deny me care now. I need to know if anyone else has dealt with this and if there might be any options I could take. Thanks so much! __________________

    Another question

Thanks for the encouragement. I have been so confused about it because I haven't been eating anymore than I was to start with. Thankfully, my willpower has been incredible this far. I'm sure that I could eat more if I wanted. I'm worried that once I do start putting more calories in that my weight loss will surely stall. I hope not. When do you usually get your first fill?
  16. That's way more than mine suggests. I see surgeon and NUT at 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months and that's it for the surgeon. Then I start back up with the weight loss doctor every six months for two years and that's all they recommend. You're right, I guess we could make more appointments if needed. My doctors are an hour away so I'm glad to not have to take off work and go down there too often.

    Getting banded on 12/17/15!

@bgtribble We have almost the identical stats. I am also 5' 6" and my heaviest weight was 259 pounds. As an adult I had always maintained a healthy weight for my female frame - about 145 - and was a lifeguard, canoe trip instructor, avid backpacker... never a 'small' person but fairly 'trim' and definitely healthy. I got married and had a baby and then the weight started to creep up on me... 10 pounds heavier, 20 pounds heavier... and over the past 15 years, I ballooned up to 259. Now that I'm back in 100's again I feel I have regained my 'old' Self. I'm not at goal weight yet, however I am feeling SO much better even at this interim stage of the process 65 pounds down! Like dear Bandista above (she is a guru - listen to her!) I also love food and cooking, and am able to still enjoy beautiful food and meals out... but in smaller portions. The best thing is having the background of satiety constantly there. The "Hunger Monster" that derailed my weight loss attempts in the past is no longer there. Now I have a can of tuna & mayo or a small piece of tender steak or 5 Tbsps of egg salad and that's it. Give me three slices of roast duck, a few spears of asparagus and no starch (potatoes, rice and breads are out for me) and BOOM. I'm sated. No desire for anything more. Happy for you, jiggyjiggy120 - you are about to embark on getting control back and feeling better. It's a tremendous thing!

    Some Info From The Pros

If I have to rush to eat, I don't. You can't. You have to be able to have time to sit and wait in between bites. I usually can't do fast food either (burger buns, soft wraps....they just don't work usually). I do find I eat the same things, not every day but there are things I know seem to be okay so I know they won't cause me too much grief if I'm paying attention. That's the thing....even after being banded for 1.5 years if I don't pay attention & take my time, I pay for it. That being said, my doctor said that no food would be off limits (however this isn't really true because at least while still in the weight loss stage, there are certain foods I just can't eat like doughy breads). However, I'd rather lose this weight finally than eat at McDonald's!
  20. Has anyone seen a difference in your relationship for the negative after surgery? For me I dnt feel like the same person anymore.. but feel selfish for it.
  21. I am getting my lap band on March 31st. I will be started my pre-operation diet on the 17th. I can't weight to get stated. Starting weight 219.

How would I know if I've streched my pouch

Remember it takes 3500 calories to gain a pound. I highly doubt at 8 weeks, you can eat this much to gain weight. It could be water weight or other variables. Track your food and follow your plan. It will get easier. This is a lifestyle change. And WLS is only a tool.
  23. I find that sometimes I eat more than other depending on the kind of food, me when I consume too much sugar I defiantly gain some weight. Here’s my advice, embrace ur worry over stretching your pouch. That worrisome voice was my red light over 5 years that beeped every time I over did something or strayed away from the reasons why I did this surgery. This way you will pay attention and be mindful at the meal time of quantity and quality. I also found that after the liquid and soft food diet, there are foods that I couldn’t eat anymore or digest and that helped me stick to what I could easily eat.

    down 5 pounds this week

Ok, I have to laugh, really really hard. I had all the fill removed from my band, because of the nausia I've been fighting, so I don't have the extra protection from over-eating. (the band is purely restrictive) I've been on a rip-roaring High and so I expected to be gaining weight. I also have been drinking Rum and light fruit beverages, becuase I wanna. I've also been eating ice cream and pasta. Yes, that's right, I've been eating pasta this week! Pasta and bread, everyday! :hungry: I'm down 5 pound this week.
