  1. May be it’s the type of carbs? From purée stage I was allowed carbs: rolled oats & vegetables (not potatoes), then fruit later on. So instead of saying ditch the carbs I should have said reduce the carbs & look for more nutritious complex carbs like in multi & whole grains (low processed), seeds & vegetables. If you’re able to eat bread & pasta on your plan look for the low carb, high protein & multi grain versions. And of course leave them to last when eating: protein first then vegetables & then carbs if you can. But maybe it’s a case of discovering what works for you and it may be reduced carbs or only complex high fibre carbs. Ketosis didn’t last for my whole weight loss phase, just in the beginning. (Thank goodness - those bad body odour, bad breath, keto flu, etc. side effects are awful.) You don’t have to be in ketosis to lose weight. That’s just one way. Continuing to be calorie deficient will enable you to lose weight. I haven’t eaten pasta, rice or bread since before my surgery three years ago. I go out often including to Italian & Japanese restaurants & haven't felt like I’m missing out yet by not eating rice or pasta. Plenty of other options on the menu. As for bread - I have 7 specialty bakeries & patisseries within a 2 km strolling radius of my home. Don’t feel I’m missing out with them either. It’s just how you look at it. But that’s me. You have to discover what works for you.
  2. Has anyone else taken this for depression and noticed weight gain. I added it about a month ago and have gained a couple pounds. It’s supposed to be weight neutral according to my dr?? In all fairness I have been eating more but it’s almost as if the medication is making me more hungry.

    August surgery buddies!

Hi! I'm also scheduled for gastric sleeve in August on the 8th. I'm nervous also but really excited for the weight-loss. I would like lose over 100 pounds. I'm 6'2" and my CW is 277. I'm sad I'm missing out on all of these cute dresses this season, but I just keep reminding myself that I can go crazy shopping for a new wardrobe next summer. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. So today is my weekly weigh in day, and I weigh 349!!! It's the first time in 2 years I have been below 350 (1st time was when I did keto, but as soon as I hit 320 it literally came back up and I never lost a single pound after I went back to my original weight). I'm figuring out the food portions, timing, measurements and I think I have it down!!! You guys have all been so amazing with all the meltdowns, crazy questions, doubting myself, etc I've done on here (I know, I was a bit loco lol ). But I seem to be losing at a nice steady pace (5-7 pounds per week) and I have to say, I'm really liking it. I feel like this is much more sustainable and maintainable than when I was doing keto (and surprisingly, a lot less restrictive! ) I'm 7 weeks post op today and honestly, other than my scars on my tummy, I would never know I had surgery. No pain, no more limitations, no problems at all. I still have to be mindful of how much I eat and how often, because as I have said before, I never lost any of my hunger hormone. But I make homemade smoothies with fruit or I drink a protein shake if I need a little extra protein, or I just keep busy until I can teach my stomach and body that I'm NOT hungry and I HAVE eaten enough and I will NOT be eating anymore because I had my allotted amount and that's it. It's harder when you're still hungry, but it CAN be done. Especially when I see the progress on the scale. So so glad I had this surgery. I don't regret it at all. Not even a tiny bit. I just wish I had done it sooner. But I guess we all do, don't we? lol

    Low BMI pre op question

Hi, first time posting here, but I am also at a BMI of 29.8. My BMI fluctuates up to 30 and then down to 29. I am always on the boarder of obese and have been my entire life. I am tired of it. I have a surgery scheduled in July. I am scared and have continual second thought myself but I have decided that this is the best option for myself. I am tired of constantly struggling with my weight. I feel that this tool will significantly help me in the long run.

    Blah...my first stall...

I only weigh once a week at most, sometimes every two weeks. I would drive myself nuts weighing every day, because a salty meal and I can gain 5 pounds! I learned not to do this to myself awhile back. Everyone is different, some people can handle the normal fluctuations.

4 months out and stalled all month!

Carbs are, at least for me, the VERY worst thing I can eat if I want to lose weight. But it's not really possible to eat a balanced diet and cut out ALL carbs. My dietician said to consume 60-80g of protein per day, less than 50g of carbs per day, and less than 50g of fats per day. She said food should be half a cup or less per meal, and for those meals that I can't measure in a measuring cup, I bought a food scale and make sure not to go over 4oz per meal (I typically stay around the 3oz mark, just o be safe). When I had my stall, it happened at 2 1/2 weeks and lasted a full 2 weeks. I actually gained 5 pounds during it and then just got stuck. Now I'm 7 weeks post op today and I'm losing between 5-7 pounds per week (before my stall I literally lost 30 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks, it was crazy!!!) so while the weight loss has slowed a lot from pre stall, I like the pace I'm at. It's easier to manage and even with the dietary restrictions, I still get to order yummy stuff and not feel left out (and I end up with at least 1 or 2 more meals with my leftovers LOL. My husband calls me a cheap date).

Just need to moan, whine and vent -- Sorry

For me, Miralax has never worked. I swear by Milk of Magnesia (if I have a drink nearby to wash away the taste) or Colace (I have to take 4 a day to get it to work, but once it kicks in, I'm good for 2-3 days lol). I was also taken off my bp meds as well as diabetes meds by by surgeon, the day I had my surgery. It's worked out well so far (I'm 7 weeks out today) but I did find it odd that the surgeon took me off and not my PCP. I had my stall at 2/2 weeks, and it lasted for 2 full weeks. I actually gained 5 pounds on it before I just got stuck. I wanted to cry almost everyday. I'm sorry you're dealing with that. It never occurred to me that stalls would be the worst part of the surgery lol I'm confused why they won't let you have your diuretic. Was it prescribed for something that had nothing to do with weight specifically? If so, the surgeon's office had no business messing with it. I have MS, and they were looking at what meds to stop and I called my neurologist from the hospital and told them and they contacted my surgeon and said in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that any meds related to MS are not to be touched in any way, and if they refuse to let me have them, he would come to the hospital everyday twice a day to administer them to me and bill the surgeon's office for the visits lol Needless to say, my MS meds were left alone.
  9. For me it was my shorts. I put on my shorts with a belt and cinched em up. Walked outside with the wifey to take a walk and my shorts fell down to my ankles in front of the neighbors. LOL We are good friends so they knew I was on the weight loss journey and the neighbors wifey gave me a whistle with a chuckle LOL
  10. Thank you for the support! I appreciate the ideas and support. I think what I'm really whining about is that have to get rid of carbs, when I'm doing everything else right! I do walk as much as my body allows, I have physical issues which keep me from doing 3 miles a day like I'd like to. Still I'm eating very little compared to the average person. I walk everyday, plus weights, yoga, etc. I eat a small amount of carbs and throws me into non keto and I stall. I guess my body doesn't care about all this, it is what it is! So I've gotten back into just healthy eating, lots of protein!

    Inches Vs. Pounds

Pretty regularly during weight loss phase, actually. I weighed every day (still do) and took measurements every week (no longer do). There would be weeks where i lost 4 lbs but basically no inches (or fractions thereof), and then there would be weeks where i lost like 0.2 of a pound, but then lost 1/4 an inch of EACH of my thigh, upper arm and breast measurements. Interestingly enough, on those weeks when I didn’t lose much weight but just inches, my waist measurements did not move…which led me to believe i was retaining water - or just bloated - which would account for the weight number not moving much. Either way, losing pounds or inches, both are WINS.

    Calories per day

I'm nearly 3 months post op and I eat between 1100 and 1300 calories a day. I've never stalled in my post op weight loss and my surgeon, dietician and I believe it's because I eat this level of calories.
  13. Awesome. You will be on the other side and losing the weight before you know it.
  14. I have not but would definitely say listen to the doctors. I know once I was ready for the surgery I wanted it to happen like yesterday but better to be safe than sorry. Once it’s all done and you have lost your weight a few extra months won’t make any difference.
  15. I have had multiple issues since having my surgery. First thing I was taken off my blood pressure meds, now I need them more than ever due to skyrocketing blood pressure. I had a diuretic for my previous pills but they won't give those to me so the pill I have barely works. I hit my first stall less than 2 weeks out from surgery and am now in another. (Stalls suck) All of my old health issues came raring back with a vengeance, (hoping as the weight drops they will go away) and now have some new ones. Had the lab take blood and she hit a nerve so I am dealing with the aftermath of that. The NUT wanted no chicken, beef or pork for the first 4 months so with my dietary restrictions this is making things a bit harder. (Just eating more veges) I am having issues with constipation and called my dr. office for help. Lets see eat more fiber and drink more water. I have always done that. I drink over 70 ounces a day (probably be more now since its warm outside) I increased my fiber from around 15 g to 20-24 g. Not helping. So why are they treating me like I'm lying? So I have had to figure it out on my own. Probably the amount of iron I am taking in. So I am going to adjust that myself. On Saturday I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and go have fun. I went out to the mall with a friend. All that walking made my hip a bit sore but I ignored it thinking not used to walking around for two hours. Yesterday rolls around I stop at the grocery store after seeing my doctor and getting an xray and when I stepped off the curb my hip almost gave out. So here I am sitting in my room not feeling too great waiting to call the doctor again for another appointment. Its been fun these past two months.
  16. I’m 45 and healthy (just overweight - 40 BMI) until I had a stroke on 6/8 2 caused by tiny hole in my heart that never closed after birth. I’m doing well and expect to be cleared by by the neurologist and cardiologist in July. My surgeon understandably cancelled my 6/29 gastric bypass. However, he says I have to wait 6 months to reschedule due to safety concerns. With such, I’ll have to redo some of the process and may not get the surgery this year. I’ve already met my insurance deductible and out of pocket maximum - making surgery free if done by 12/31. Has anyone been in this or similar situation? Thanks!
  17. I have everything done to get approved by insurance. Did my EGD, nutritionist app, stress test and psych now just waiting for insurance to approve and get the call so I can start my 2 week liquid diet.
  18. Stalls happen. Frustrating & demoralising at times but part of the process. But you also know you have been going off plan which is hindering your weight loss too. You know what you have to do to get back on track. Remember the benefits of the surgery don’t last forever. Take advantage of them now. Take your lovely puppy for walks. Ditch the carbs. Stick to your plan. Ensure you’re meeting your fluid & protein goals. Check if you’re really hungry or just head hungry. Are you hungry for a specific food or food type? Does it pass if you distract yourself or have something to drink? Real hunger feels different to head hunger. For me I get restless & feel like something is wrong. It doesn’t pass & I don’t crave anything specific. You can do this.

    Post Op Periods

It’s because oestrogen is stored in your fat. As you loose weight the oestrogen is released into your bloodstream giving you a hormonal flush. Heavier/lighter, more/less frequent cycles, increased or decreased PMT symptoms, etc. plus the stress of the surgery & changed diet add to it all. I was menopausal when I had the surgery & all my hot flushes disappeared. They all can back though once I’d lost a lot of my weight ☹️. Your cycles will settle again too. PS - you can also become more fertile. Many surgeons suggest doubling up on contraceptives.

    Inches Vs. Pounds

This is pretty common. It’s like your body fat rearranges & resettles itself. Tracking body measurements as well your weight can keep you motivated when the scale stops moving. Plus the measurements can help you come to terms with your shrinking body too. Your body will even resettle once your weight is stable. I went from being very up & down when I stabilised to getting my curves back … well my waist & hips so I looked more like my old hour glass shape. Still no butt though. Weird but true.
  21. So alot of you are aware I have been in a full on stall for 5 weeks now..ugh.....anyway today or I should say within the last few days I have broke the stall and lost 4.6 lbs FINALLY!!! How many have noticed the inches coming off even tho no weight loss occurred? I have lost alot in my chest area, my bra band was a 46/48 circumference. I am now in a 42. I have noticed the way clothes fit looser and especially my shirts in the bust and some off my belly. I am pleased and thankful for the non scale victories I am starting to see.

4 months out and stalled all month!

I think you should continue sticking to your diet plan. Stalls do happen and at times quite irritating especially in the first 6 months when you expect your weight to fly away. I have had slow losing months every other month since the surgery. I stalled about 3 weeks or so too around month 5 where I barely lost 4 or 5 pounds that month. But then weight continued to fly the next month. So, it'll happen as long as you stick to your diet routine. Hope you break the stall soon.
  23. Slowly going back to old habits, which is not good. How have others stayed the course and kept losing to achieve goal weight?

    Thing I miss most

Reading this is my greatest fear. I'm 51, healthy and happy, but tomorrow I'm having surgery mainly because the quality of my life is starting the deteriorate. And it didn't happen slowly, I went from hiking 3 miles without issue to struggling to walk a couple of blocks in a matter of weeks (due to back pain). So while the weight didn't get in the way of your life now, maybe knowing it very well could at any time, maybe that'll help you feel a little less resentful towards things. I've been seeing a therapist via BetterHelp.com since I started down the surgery path. I know I have a food addiction and I know how much I love just stuffing my face, and it has helped. It hasn't gone away, but it has definitely helped. It's all done remotely, so even time isn't an excuse. And they've been very helpful with lowering the cost for me just for the asking. I hope you keep posting so I can follow your journey. I'm rooting hard for you (and for me!).
  25. Thanks again for all the insights. Spoke to the nutritionist, I have no exercise restrictions so I’m good there. She said I just need to listen to my body when it says to stop since I am on such a low calorie diet. Weight lifting and high impact activity is aok. She was surprised my calories were as high as they have been. She said I’ve been making all the right choices and I have been averaging more protein than many of her patients. She also thinks the weight loss is appropriate so not to worry about it too much. She said she’d be surprised if I average higher than that over the next two weeks on the soft food diet. So onward and upward (or downward as we’d all like!)
