    Pain?!?!

I was told that it was muscle tissue healing. had the same kind of pain last week and a few days later it just eased up. Now it's just about gone and I'm able to bend and turn on either side when I'm laying down. I walk a lot and I feel that helped a lot. Hope you feel better soon Had my surgery on June 17.

    First Fill News 1/3/2010

Christmas was wonderful....but I'm kind of glad that the temptation is OVER and done with.... whew! There was an abundance of chocolate candy, cookies and other treats where we spent Christmas!!! I had my first fill 5 days ago, 12-30-2009. It really wasn't too bad. It didn't hurt any more than any other shot... (and not NEARLY as bad as my recent flu and tetanus shots!!) The appointment took less than 15 minutes and I was on my way. The nurse completely obstructed me (via saline) at first. She said this was to help me understand how the process of swallowing will be changing a little...and to get an idea of the feelings I may experience. (She had me sip water until I was "tipped off" and then she released the saline, so I could feel the water drain through... it was a little strange, but not distressing. She again encouraged little tiny bites, eating slowly, eating protein first, no drinking with meals -- all of which I've been practicing for the past 6 weeks! I'm glad I've had some time to build up my new habits. My hunger level has been fine over the past 6 weeks. even without a fill. I can easily go 4-6 hours between meals. It's actually kind of cool to hear my stomach growl... and to realize... oh, I need to eat something! I haven't been able to eat much at a time. Certainly not more than 1/4-1/2 a sandwich, hamburger, etc...depending on its size and the type of bread involved. (I oinch off a lot of the bread instead of eating it.) Mostly, I eat grilled chicken or baked turkey breast and soft veggies. I did have some wonderful roast this weekend that melted in my mouth! Swallowing has not been a problem. I do take little bites -- and I try to quit eating before I start to feel too full. The whole process is still amazing to me! Now that I'm home, I'm exercising again. (There was WAY too much snow and ice where we were visiting over Christmas... and the temp was in the single digits! TOO cold for this southern girl!!) But now, I'm back to doing either 30 minutes on the treadmill or on the bike. Also doing a little bit with free weights and lunges. Just easing into it and trying to make exercise a daily habit. Still AMAZED by the whole thing.... very happy and thankful that God provided this opportunity for me. :smile2: I hope anyone reading this is also experiencing positive results. HINT== Check out the thread that is all before-after pictures and you'll feel really motivated!!

    Almost 2 weeks since banding...

Well, I feel really good My port incision still hurts and the swelling is going down to an extent that I can feel the port when I press on it. Losing average 1 per day. Going back to work Tuesday so I plan on being alot more active. It is tough now because it is like 150 degrees here in S. Florida . I am going to try a bike soon to to see how that goes. Getting a fill in 2 weeks already. I told the doc I dont feel any restriction. I am not hungry but could probably over do it without some discilpine...rut roo! I dont go to the bathroom (number2) and this bothers me. I dont know if I can take a laxative. I think protein binds you up or something....all this foreign healty food in my body and it doenst know how to act. In the mushy stage; egg salad, tuna salad, hummus (a first not bad) and of course those lovely protien shakes. Best wishes to all in your banderama!

    Does Anyone Here Smoke Marijuana?

I was lucky in that it has never really given me munchies...doesn't now. It was fine for me. I smoked it sometime around my second week post-op.
  6. Storm, yes it has been a rough week. That whole not knowing thing sucks big time, but so thankful it's a clear. I am just excited to go to the next step!
  7. Progress!!! I have my psych evaluation scheduled for April 7th. That will be the beginning of that 6 months. So, if all goes well with that, surgery will be sometime after the first week of October. Countdown is underway!

    Endoscopy Tomorrow

You wanna be sedated, just like the song. Maybe a sore throat for up to a couple three days, maybe not. If so, it may even be as mild as the slightly annoying feeling that often precedes the common cold. Maybe a slight bruising around the collarbone or upper shoulder(s) from being leaned on during the procedure, maybe not. Nothing eventful, nothing that will keep you from going about your usual routines.

Am I crazy?? Already Mourning Food!

I never thought I would say this either but you are correct. I had to have a unfill 2 weeks ago due to gall bladder surg. During that week before getting filled again, I thought I would have sm amounts of all the food I couldn't have before (anything with bread) and I found 9 out of 10 times I didn't enjoy having it.:clap2:

    5 days post op

Ok well my stay in hospital was longer than expected! I was booked for surgery on the 19th of May, which went ahead fine... however the pain after surgery was a big problem for me. The surgeon was concerned about the amount of pain I was in and that something was wrong. So after endless people touching and feeling their way across my unbelievably sore stomach, x-rays and ct scans, they found that there was nothing wrong, however my internal swelling was taking more time than usual to go down... hence the pain staying for longer than it should. I spent 5 days in hospital on morphie and pethadine... NOT a good experience! hopefully it will all pay off in the long run  This is my 4th day on the fluid's diet and already I am struggling! Not only do i feel the need to chew, but i want normal food! I want to be able to eat! It's driving me insane! Weightloss wise, Since I commenced the optifast (2 weeks prior to surgery) up to today (5 days post op) I have lost 10kg... a good start I think!

    motivation

I am going to be blunt, but you didn't get this surgery to become bulimic. I am 8 months in and have lost 52 pounds. All of this was done in the first 5 months, been stalled for the last 3 months, because I learned how to eat around the band. Also, I had to be tightened very slowly because of acid reflux. As I get tighter, I am now just experiencing the need to vomit. But I know why...I am not eating the right things, I eat too fast and too much. I feel your pain, but you have to be honest with your doctor and get this straight. There are some VERY serious consequences to what you are doing. They are there to help you. Good luck.
  17. Hello, My name is JJ. This week I have taken the first step in getting my health together. My insurance covers weight loss surgery after 6 months of supervised dieting. Today I saw my GP and she is completely supportive of this journey, and was genuinely honest about it being a tool, not a cure all. I appreciate the honesty. I have chosen a Dr. and will attend his seminar in a few days. At that point I will fill out the paperwork and go from there. About a year ago I had a major surgery that improved my health by 75%. Since then I realize how great I can feel, and the immense pleasure of being a part of life without pain. My BMI is 41. I am 5'1" and 219lbs @ 39 yrs of age. I have thyroid disease (hypo), high triglycerides, mild sleep apnea, depression (after losing a child) and am pre-diabetic. Around 10 years ago all self-esteem issues vanished for me after the birth of our child. I finally started living life as much as possible, only being held back by pain. I buy clothes that fit, and look nice, and never agonize about what I am wearing or how it fits. I take care to look up to date, and presentable for me. I like looking nice and feeling good. My husband is FABULOUS. When we met I was around 150 and as I grew through the years his devotion and commitment to me grew even deeper. He's not a chubby chaser, but loves me and respects me. He looks like a male model still, and I have grown obese. I know I have a good, good man. My goal is to feel as great as I can, be 100% a part of life, and come off of all my meds. I am ready for this change. Thank you to everyone that is so forthcoming on this site. Just what I have read in the last few days has helped with questions and curiousness!

    Losing hair

I noticed that I was having hair loss post-op. I was not able to keep in the shakes and still can't. Pre-op I did fine with them but, after it was like a switch was flipped. Since I have been out of the hospital about the last week and have been able to eat it has virtually stopped. I eat eggs (2) scrambled for breakfast. Lunch is chicken or Tuna. Dinner is crab, chicken or tuna. Before bed if I am hungry I lick on a spoon of peanut butter. From time to time I alternate with cottage cheese instead of eggs for breakfast (cholesterol reasons) or mashed potatoes (for carbs) at lunch with a few chunks of crab. I only had surgery 4 weeks ago and do find it difficult to get in all protein required. My hair loss has improved so much though. 2 1/2 weeks no protein was rough on my body. Increase protein and it should stop.

    Docs in Maryland

Hi livn, Well, I know that the office has gone through a personnel change over the last few months. I was sort of in the middle of it and the only difficulty I had was getting them to send/fax me the list of required medical tests to my family doctor for pre op testing. It became a hassle but all worked out in the end. I'm not sure about your approval process, but a lot depends on your insurance. I met the "national standards" for obesity as required by my insurance (BC/BS Federal). Some insurances require a year of recorded dieting, thankfully mine did not. My insurance also required a "center of excellence" which does fit with GBMC. I went to GBMC at my diabetes doctor suggestion..he had 11 patients before me that had lap band surgery and all went there...another had RNY but in DC....all lap banders are doing extremely well. As for GBMC, I can't complain...except for the initial paperwork delay. Post op, I ended up back in the hospital....had surgery Friday and did well on Saturday, but on Sunday afternoon, I couldn't get liquids down....Called Dr. Mo Monday AM and he had me come straight in..here, my esophagas had swollen (very rare)..admitted me into the hospital for 1-1/2 days for IVs, was preventing dehydration, plus steroid IVs for getting the swelling down....Dr. Mo was great throughout....I've been back a few times, with no problems with the office...yet to get my 1st fill. I still have some restrictions and don't have the need yet...am losing 1-2 lbs per week so Dr. Mo and I discussed putting it off until I need it. I cancelled my December appt for a fill and will go back in January for check up. I really haven't been involved in the monthly meetings...just don't have the time to get up there....I work in DC and just adopted a greyhound that keeps me busy... I know people have complained about GBMC, but if you feel uneasy, check out all of the other places nearby...make sure you are comfortable with your choice.... I'd probably go back to GBMC over again.. GOOD LUCK !
  20. Just got home from the hospital I was sleeved on July 21 and I still feel really crapy, and throw up. I also have a massive head ache. Anyone else experienced this ?

    What's been your lightbulb moment?

My light bulb moment happened this week. I had my surgery on November 22 and have done pretty well. I have stayed the course and have not swayed from my list of acceptable Protein options prior to this mini vacation. This week I went to San Francisco to care for my aged father. When I arrived in SF I went to the market immediately and bought my Dannon light and fit yogurt, cottage cheese, Light Baby Bel cheese and turkey slices before I even went to my Dad's. I wanted to make sure I continue to make good choices when it came to food. Seven days later....... I am home and food wasn't an issue. For the first time in decades I took control of my eating habits when visiting the family in San Francisco. I said NO to a cannoli, NO to a Joe's hamburger, NO to a Tostada, NO to a crepe, etc.......my response was, "Can I meet you afterwards?" I always carried a Baby Bel Cheese in my purse and always felt satisfied. I came home 4 pounds lighter and the feeling........I GOT THIS!

    Input Anyone?

I had the lap band placed over 4 years ago...don't regret it all. I am very happy with my decision in getting it. However..... When I first got the band, I had this pain for the first week or so after surgery that was like a "tearing" or "ripping" pain all over my stomach when I stood up and tried to walk around....I called my doctor, got checked out, no infection and was told that it was pretty common to have abdominal pain after abdominal surgery (lol). The pain eventually subsided in the beginning. But then it came back about a month later and has come back a couple times a month since then. I obviously went back to my doctor and he again said it was not band related and to check with my GI doctor...so I did. Here's all the tests I've had done: Colonoscopy Fluoroscopy EGD CAT scan Hida scan Gastric emptying Multiple trips to the ER they found I had gallstones and said that could be what was causing it, so I had my gallladder removed......but STILL have this pain! The pain feels like it starts in the center of my stomach, right below my sternum or on the left lower rib and radiates ALL over abdomen, back and chest. It is a CONSTANT tearing , ripping, pain that when severe, has made it even hard to walk without cringing. Sitting and laying down the pain subsides quite a bit, but as soon as I stand up its, in my words, ON FIRE! Doctor told me I had IBS from when I had colonoscopy, but people with IBS usually feel relief with (excuse me) passing gas or with bowel movement. Mine does not. And people with IBS usually feel it after eating particular foods...mine is not triggered by certain foods. For instance, this morning I woke up with the pain....first thing in the morning. The only thing that seems to help the pain is ibuprofen 800mg or sometimes narcotics. I've tried gasx, tums, and pepto and those don't work, I do have ovarian cysts and very heavy menstrual cycle (sorry guys who are reading!) but my doctor doesn't seem to think that the pain would go up that high. But what about endometriosis? That runs in my family. Anyways....if anyone has any insight, feel free to share. 4 years of this is tiring when I don't know what it is.
