I know this is old but I have been on Suboxone for 10 years now, my pain management dr told me and the surgeon he wants me to continue taking my 4mg of suboxone through surgery and that if the surgeon had any questions about medicating me for pain after my sleeve surgery he would be happy to discuss it with him. I'm not sure if they have spoken yet but have a meeting with the surgeon in about a week and surgery in less than 5 weeks so we shall find out if they have me follow his instructions of continuing to take it or not and if I do how pain control goes. I've heard of other pain patients actually taking percocet for breakthrough pain while on subs so i don't see it having a negative effect but with all the horror stories about precipitated withdrawals when I started taking subs I can't lie im definitely nervous.

    September surgery buddies!!

    Hi Buddies - Two weeks away and I've got a lot of head trash going on that I just need to get off my chest. ::deep breath:: Fair warning - this is kinda long, rambling and full of woe is me. Feel free to exit stage left now. I am afraid. Not of surgery, not of complications, but of failure. I've tried so many things and failed. Or succeeded, then gained the weight back and then some more. I feel so out of control of my weight, I've gained steadily for two years straight. 50+lbs. Nothing stopped it, not even my usual approaches. And I can't help but think, if starving myself didn't work in the past (I mentioned I've tried everything, including very low calorie diets) and led to regain plus some, why will this work? If I couldn't stop the gain, how will I possibly lose the 100lbs I need to lose? If I am in control of the successful outcome of the surgery based on adherence to the rules - then that makes me shake in my boots. I've been down that road before, "You will be successful if you just follow the program!" Didn't work so well obviously. I'm feeling defeated because of my past, but trying to find hope. My hope is all the success stories. I'm almost hesitant to feel TOO hopeful because of my fear of failure. I also know I'm not alone in how I feel, that many of you feel or felt the same. And if you don't feel this way, please don't let my fear become your fear! I KNOW you all will be successful!! It's my own failure that I'm all too familiar with. Sorry to be so negative. I just had to get this **** out of my head and get honest with how I'm feeling.

    August surgery buddies!

    I’ve had a crazy week after my surgery on the 29th. I’ve been struggling with gas pain and swelling; my tummy is so swollen and sore. I have huge bruising near my incision sites, too. I got really nauseated yesterday and started vomiting. I really felt terrible! So I ended up back at the surgery center to get IV fluids. I was really dehydrated. Im feeling sooo much better today! I have some meds for nausea now and lidocaine patches for areas near my incisions that are very sore. Im still the same weight as my surgery day so I guess I should be thankful I didn’t gain due to all the swelling! Im living on jello, bone broth, popsicles, and a LOT of water!!

    I had a zoom Meeting with my doctor today, I asked him about stalling already and he assured me that it happens to most people. Our systems are adjusting to the diet and trying to hold on to fuel. He actually recommended to eat a few more calories a day to kick start the weightless again. He said that a lot of times throughout the next few year, we may have to do that, especially as we all become more active.

    August 24!

    One week appointment went very well. I got three out of four drains removed, and potentially getting the fourth drain removed on Friday if I can keep my output below 20 each day. They took all the tape off of the incisions, which wasn’t very painful but did it feel weird. When they were taking stitches out of my bellybutton I could feel clearly that they were touching the skin on the side of my abdomen, despite the fact that that skin is now in the center of my stomach. I think I am going to need to reroute some nerves or some thing. Ha! Due to the fact that there was so much loose skin on my upper body, they ended up actually having to do an upper body lift at the same time. So my incisions run all the way from my elbows through my under arms and underneath my boobs. I am happy with this, because I had such trouble with skin spilling out in my under arm area that I really was concerned if they left any skin there what it was going to look like a postop. It’s probably going to be a longer recovery because of the additional area, but I am OK with that. Still not in any significant pain, although riding to and from the appointment and getting the tape and drains out absolutely tuckered me out for the day yesterday. I guess it’s hard to judge how much energy you have when you were spending all day and a recliner watching an old season of project runway. My left arm is still significantly swollen, and missing some feeling on the lower bottom part of my arm. Hoping that resolves once the swelling goes down, whenever that is.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

    I’m so sorry i know how horrible it is. I had the VSG October last year, lost all the weight but by my 4th month i couldn’t take the pain from GERD Dr had me on so many medications for it but nothing worked. I am now a week post conversion to Bypass no Gerd anymore. Best decision ever. I hope you can convert soon 🥰

    Ooh I’m not certain that the lack of energy is entirely due to the reduced calories. Although I’m sure that plays a role I think it’s just our bodies are healing and we need more sleep. I was tired for a while too. I just gave into it and took lots of naps. Basically all you can really do. I’m not sure if I was still tired at 4 weeks post op but everyone recovers differently. It’s doesn’t last forever though. Just try to hang in there.

    Weight during preop

    Yeah, I have food allergies so I use hardly any condiments. No gluten. No tomatoes. (The 2 take out most condiments). I can handle minimal dairy. Whey protein I’m ok with but cheese I have to be careful (think 2 of the baby bell cheeses a day). About the only condiment I’m ok with is vinegars. Oil I only use the spray (per the nutritionist) to decrease intake and focus on fats from avocado, nuts, seeds and hummus. I see the surgeon in the next 2 weeks so I’ll see what he says. I do know the NP said everything is really going to be based on my other health conditions as my cardiologist wants me to have surgery (I have some congenital heart defects). The surgeon had mentioned he’s been discussing me with my cardiologist. So maybe I’m just stressing myself out (not the craziest). I know my advocate said on our last call everything was looking good.

    Egglife wraps

    i am hoping for my target to start carrying the flavored one. So far they just have the plain. Our Sam’s club does have the everything bagel but I’m pretty sure I can’t eat anywhere close to 12 in a week. Plus I’m not really a huge fan of that seasoning (i can take it or leave it but it doesn’t add much flavor in my opinion). I am looking forward to the southwestern flavor becoming available though. That sounds good.
  11. So it turned out that there is two days of clear liquids and then nothing the morning of surgery. The letter posted to MyChart was pretty far off from what I was told at my appointments today. I am deeply grateful I did not have to do weeks. I applaud those of you who are doing that because I know it is NOT easy!!! So today is your big day!!! Yayyy!!!! The first in our group. You will do great. We are all cheering for you!
  12. Today was my pre op appointments. I first met with the resident, then the surgeon and then the nutritionist. Then I went for my Covid test and then on to anesthesia and finally the lab. It was a busy day, but I managed to stop on the way home for a hair cut. 😅 I am starving!!! Today I drank three Gatorade Zero with protein, 3 sf jello cups, the broth from a can of chicken noodle soup mixed with a packet of ProCel for an extra 10 G protein…and probably half a box of sf popsicles. Okay, not really…but a LOT of popsicles. One more day and then surgery. Hopefully I won’t be hungry anymore after that. A big, fat taco with mild sauce would taste so good!

    August surgery buddies!

    I understand the frustration with not losing. I thought the first week or two would show a great bit of loss, but so far the scale is hovering between 296-298 fluctuating up and down. I’m only 5 days out so I guess it’s still fluid retention from the surgery itself. I just really wanted to end out August under 290. I know that it is nothing I am doing wrong. I’m walking every 4 hours, getting my water in, I hit 60g of protein today but have been averaging 40-50. Drinking shakes, eating yogurt, and still doing clear liquids. I track everything in Carb Manager. My calories haven’t gone above 400 all week. I’m following every instruction they gave me to the letter. So if I still haven’t lost by my post-op next week, at least I’ll have a log of everything I’m doing and eating to show them, so maybe they can help me figure out what I need to adjust.

    Question on hair loss

    I cut mine in two stages. My hair wasn’t quite at my waist but probably about 2/3 down my back. Had about 4inches cut off in the first month then had it cut to just above my shoulders in the second month. (I go to my hairdresser every 4 weeks to colour & cut my hair.) Have to admit the shorter strands did not look nearly as bad as the long hair in the bottom of the shower - didn’t seem as as much hair. By cutting off some of the length you may notice your hair is much bouncier & less flat as you don’t have the weight of the longer hair pulling your hair down. Your hair will grow back but it will just take a bit of time to get back to the length you want it. Or you may decide to keep the shorter length like I did. So much easier to care for & style.

    I feel you on the frustration, but really it's way too soon for either of us to get upset by our progress. It's just so hard when SuzyQ posts they lost 879lbs their first week (which is great) and we hope maybe it will happen for us too!

    I ask the same question to my doctor today, he says as long as it doesn't progress and change the characteristic of the pain/discomfort is part of the healing process in you abdomen and abdominal wall. My discomfort started last week, I'm able to sleep on the side and in my belly since day 5.   17. Haven't updated this thing in a while. It's just to keep me accountable and I know others can read this so feel free to chime in. I'm officially almost entering my 7th month of post op life from my gastric bypass. I feel so much better and I've lost over 100 lbs but there are days I still feel like it won't all really matter at all until I am stick skinny (which wouldn't be possible without plastics and even then I don't think so). I hate that I think that way - it makes it hard to be happy for myself and then that feeds into not meeting my goals. 

    I was in a weight loss rut for a while there - like the whole month of August basically was me just gaining and losing the same 4 lbs. I figured it was just a weight loss stall part of the process because I hear there's a big stall 6 months out. I also was macro and calorie counting but I was drinking more alcohol than I ever have since surgery. I think that contributed to it immensely. Just to be clear I wasn't drinking out of transfer addiction - just going to more social events and dinners because my life has gotten so incredibly busy. It's amazing because I have the confidence to go out and be social now but it makes it harder to navigate the strict calorie limits and hydration goals when you're always hanging out with people. 

    Anyway, I really put a lot of thought into calories the past two weeks and stopped drinking too. I finally broke my stall. I went from 240 to 236 and it seems to be sticking. I'm at this weird part in the surgery journey where the honeymoon is over. I no longer get food stuck in my esophagus on the regular but I have noticed I am starting to feel nauseous after eating (probably because I don't have the limitation of the food getting stuck) so I don't realize how much my body is actually okay with. 

    So now I'm at this point where I'm figuring out how much of different types of foods I can really eat without making myself nauseous. It's a work in progress but I'm determined. I'm usually good around 1/2 a cup of carbs and 1-1.5 cups of vegetables. Protein is always different. Sometimes I can eat it no problem, others it's one of the only foods that still get "stuck". I try not to go crazy counting calories because I have a history of eating disorders. I mainly try to stay under 1300 calories. My BMR is around 1900 right now. Instead of counting every single morsel, I make sure I eat more in the beginning of the day so I don't snack at night and I weigh my food if it's a fat or carb. 

    I'd really like to add more exercise back into the equation but I've been on my *ss for the past 2 weeks because I sprained my tailbone. It's finally better so I'm going to try doing a mile run and a 2 mile walk at least 3 times a week to start out. Weathers also clearing up for outdoor runs and I'd like to get my sweat on anyway. 

    But anyway, I feel like I'm at this point of my surgery journey that doesn't get talking about a lot. The pre op and right after surgery phases are talked about most but the most important part seems to be what happens after all the cool perks start dying down? Hunger comes back, or you're able to increase portions, introduce foods back, etc. I'd love to talk to others about this point just for support. I know it just comes down to tracking and movement but sometimes it does feel like you're doing it all and those numbers won't budge (they don't go up, but they don't go down). For me it's best not to obsess over the number. I can get really depressed checking my weight everyday. I'm down to checking about 3 times a month now. 

    Not sure what else I'm trying to say here. Just want to keep going. My first goal weight was 220 that I set for myself. I'm about 15 lbs away from it. I think once I hit 220 and maintain it for 2 months I'll set a new goal weight for 200 lbs. I think at that point I'll be ready for plastics. I'd love to have my arms tightened, my stomach skin removed and my boobs lifted. Everything else I can take or leave haha

    August surgery buddies!

    Hi, same surgery and same date! I am still on the liquid diet tho for one more week per Dr’s order. I get about 60g of protein daily and about 50oz of water/liquids. Feeling a bit frustrated because I have only lost about 1.5lb since surgery.

    Nausea

    I had a patch from the surgery for three days, that seemed to work really well. I had an Rx from before the surgery and I was told I could take if needed after. If I take it early enough it helps. If I wait to long nothing seems to help. Also if I get even slightly dehydrated I feel nauseous. I was getting sick from my protein shakes (too many) so I cut back to no more than 1 fairlife a day and break it up (only a few ounces at a time) then I seem to be ok. I’ve been doing pretty well with chicken salad and high protein foods - I just have to eat 5 or 6 smaller meals… if I try to eat 3 I don’t feel well. It’s to much at one time. RealGood brand frozen dinners are a higher protein and I’ve tolerated those well puréed. Texture is a little weird - but I got used to it. (One more week until no more purées - I’m hoping that makes it even easier) Maybe check with your team and see if they are willing to prescribe something or if they are ok with you pcp prescribing something.

    Hunger

    So our surgeon had us on 3 weeks of a liquid diet and now starting our 4th week we can have mushy/puréed foods. I had a scrambled egg and about an hour and a half later had 1/4 cup of chicken noodle soup. Eating every two hours or so seems a little inconvenient especially when I’m thinking about going back to work. But I guess This is my new life and I have to figure out what works. At least I’m not alone in the hunger feeling. I wish you well on your journey as well tho. 😁

    Nausea

    I'm three weeks post op, and I never really feel comfortable. I use myfitnesspal and measure my food in order to eat appropriate amounts. I do feel better now that I can eat actual food and not just soups or protein drinks, which I frankly found revolting. Now, I mostly eat white fish and chicken, hummus, refried beans, mashed baked beans, eggs etc. But even though I eat small amounts and try to eat slow, I usually feel nauseous after I eat, and also between meals. So many things disgust me now. I bought sugar free juice drinks, in order to drink something other than water, but they make me nauseous. Is this normal? Does everyone feel like this? Does it get better? Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get rid of nausea?
  22. Hi, I am 6 weeks in and still hard to eat and drink. I just returned to work and need some ideas on what to eat feel like I'm not getting enough protein and it's really hard to drink the shakes now. I really miss using a straw.     August surgery buddies!

    I had RnY on 2nd August. I lost a little over 32 pounds between the Liver reducing diet and a week or so post op. Then it massively slowed down and now I’ve been at a stall for over a week. It’s so disheartening, I’m terrified that I’m doing something wrong! 😩 I’m trying to research as much as possible, because I wasn’t really given anything to follow. But I’m under 500 calories per day and I believe I’m eating right. Perhaps not enough protein though. It’s so overwhelming!

    Puree week

    I lost like crazy week 1. Week 2 (starting purées) I didn’t loose an ounce. Today is day 1 of week 3 (my 2nd week of purées) and I finally had movement on the scales.

Hello everyone one of my favorite things to drink pre opt was body armor but of course I am not able to drink it currently do to the sugar being too high and don’t want to risk dumping syndrome. Is there anyone that’s months of weeks post op that can now do more than just 6 grams of sugar? Is that something that will stick with me lifelong? Or might I be able to have a body armor every once and again in the future? Any help I would appreciate 💜
