  1. I lost 55 pounds in 5 months before surgery and right now I am 5 weeks out and have lost 30 pounds. I actually thought this same exact questions the night before surgery. I thought...'well I have been eating very little before the sleeve already, so would it make a big difference after surgey? Will I still loose the weight like everyone else?'..... and the answer is yes! so don't worry about it. By the way congrats on loosing that weight! It only makes it closer to goal!! You loose so fast in the beginning that it makes you only jump closer to goal by loosing that weight before surgery! Good luck on your journey and keep us posted!

    Hi!

I'm 42, married and have two kids. One is gone to university and the other has two years of high school left. Been married 21 years. I'm in the Canadian Army and am in my 24th year. I love what I do, and can't think of doing anything else...plan to work until I'm 50ish, then should be in a good position to call it quits. I am trained to fix army kit, concentrating on electronics, however I'm more supervisory these days. I love life and leisure. I don't need a bunch of people or friends, as I believe in quality, not quantity... My wife is my best friend and I wouldn't have it any other way. We love vacationing together, and spending time with our kids, but we do realize they are growing up, and want lives of their own. I like to work out and get sweaty, spend time in the sun, read, walk, jog, listen to music and watch movies. My band journey started in Feb 2010 when a coworker told me his story of how he lost a bunch of weight and planted the idea in my head. After some consults and preop I was on the table on June 22nd 2010. My starting weight was 265. It's been good for me. At first the weight tumbled off but things have slowed significantly. I'm good with it. I can eat almost anything as long as i take my time.. i've had refux issues am on Pantaloc to help with that. of my 10cc band im roughly at 9.25 cc's and that isvthe max i can go without the reflux giving me severe issues. i still Get the occasional blockage and i know my slider foods. im trying to maintain a plateau right now so im trying to live as "normal" as possible. The band has certainly helped with my key issue of overeating and gorging, the rest is up to me to pick better choices. you dont change 39 years of bad habits in 3... it takes time, and as long as the numbers are in my favor, its all good. I'm in the best shape of my life, healthy and plan to live a long time.
  3. Hi Kim, Here's the link to the thread that has a couple of appeal letters in it: http://lapbandtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2527&perpage=15&pagenumber=2 At this point all you're doing is getting a referral from your PCP to explore weight-loss surgery. Don't worry about what TYPE of surgery yet; that's not a call for your PCP to make. Once you get the referral to a surgeon, start going for all the diagnostic tests and whatnot that the surgeon requires. The first step is to get the doctors and Kaiser to agree that you are a good candidate for surgery at all. Then it's your surgeon who will be putting in the request for pre-cert for the surgery itself, and at that point you need to be all over the lap-band vs RNY thing. Make sure the surgeon's office requests the correct surgery, and if you are denied make sure you know exactly why. Then take it from there. Good luck!!

5/3/07 OMG! What AM I doing??

Been hell at school today - some vile kids and organizing my cover for next week and told my line manager I might not be in for 2 weeks as people seem to think I'll be sore for longer than I thought. At least all the activity and a staff meeting after school took my mind off tomorrows events! The nurse called this evening to ask a few questions and explain what'll happen tomorrow - she asked how my pre op diet was going (what pre op diet?) then she went on about someone who'd lost half stone for her op (Why have the op if you can lose weight so easily??). I have this nagging feeling that if anyone is going to fail with the band .. it's bound to be me. I know that's not fighting talk and if I heard anyone say that sort of thing I'd say they're doomed to fail.. please let it work for me!! I'm worrying now about the actual operation now and I must focus on the good that'll come out of all this and think beyond the op itself. Time to pack my bag and get things ready for the kids.. I promise I'll be back to tell what happens - if not.. well:straight

Some Thoughts and Plans and Goals

great job on the swimming. that is great exercise. am also glad you stopped weighing as much because sometimes the scale is just not right and if you gain (for whatever reason) it just ruins your happy attitude esp when you KNOW you are on it and doing fabulous. as long as you are losing inches, then you are losing and i know you are. good luck on the upcoming fill
  6. I am right there with you...I will have my Lap-band surgery on the 15th of Jan. Your blog says a lot! I made my decision to check into the surgery when I had gained so much weight back after I quit smoking. I have the high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and was told that I am a diabetic after seeing the surgeon. I know that I need to make the change for me and no one else! Kandi
  7. I had reduction/lift done 15 yrs ago. I had been 40/42 DD for many many yrs even when I was smaller and the morning after my surgery still admitted I was scared to look! I was a few days before I could stomach looking. the pain for me was minimum and I stayed numb on the incisions for many yrs. I was soo happy to get it done. was such a relief. I'm really shocked after 100 pd weight loss to date that I mine have NOT deflated yet! lol...will see how or what happens to mine when I get another 30 to 40 off! My tummy will be next myself. Even after 32 yrs and 2 kids my tummy never went back to pre pregnancy form. that I am looking forward to!

    Weight Gain

I have also gained part of my weight back. I have gone keto for normal people and the admin wanted me to consume over 1249 calories. I couldn't. I went to bariatric keto and it was more reasonable. Now the difficulty is getting back on track and cutting all the crap out. My family keep bringing it back in the house and I get angry and eat it. My bad. So now i need to pull myself back to basics. Tomorrow is my start date.

Is A 5 Pound Gain Possible?

It is really true that most take-out food is very high in sodium, fat and carbs. My dietician states that even if you are eating good foods but you increase your salt intake it will show in weight gain. Everyone is right, take it as a learning experience about snacks and take out food and just move on. You aren't the only person who probably learned this the hard way. Congratulations for getting right back up and on track.

Is A 5 Pound Gain Possible?

I think some of the weight is from the crackers/sweets/fried food and brownies; and the some is from the high salt content that is fast/fried food. If you MUST have a snack at night I would make it chicken breast, or veggies. Because crunchy carbs are my down fall I don't keep them in my house at all. Full disclosure I had chips and salsa, and cheesecake at a Super Bowl party and it took me a week to loose those 4 pounds that were there Monday morning. Stupid Patriots!!!

Is A 5 Pound Gain Possible?

Wow, that must have been discouraging! I find it hard to believe that one evening of excess=5 pounds, but it must be true. Likely a combination weight gain and water retention (due to salt, alcohol?, high carbs, etc). Just get back on the program and all will be okay. Learn from this and add it to the list of things to avoid in the future. Part of this journey is figuring out how you gained so much weight in the past (and you just got a clue on the weekend). Good luck and carry on.

Is A 5 Pound Gain Possible?

Actually, that 3,500 calories (actually, kcal.) per pound was determined in the lab by oxidizing, or burning, food. It's unproven that the same equation works in the body. It's very possible that someone could gain five pounds without eating 5 x 3,500 calories. I know a lot of us who in our overeating days could gain more weight than our calorie intake would seem to permit, and it would just stay on as we continued to overeat. Metabolism is indeed quite complex, highly individual and not fully understood.
  14. When I weighed myself at home on 2/6/12, I weighed 256. I was so happy because I had lost 2 pounds (I was 258 the previous Monday). I stuck close to my diet all week, but did cheat a few times with some crackers and sweets in the evenings. I still exercised each day though. Then, over the weekend, we had friends over and they brought Long John Silvers for dinner. I knew it was bad, but I didn't want to insult them, so I had 2 pieces of fish, 2 hushpuppies, and cole slaw. While we were playing cards, I also ended up snacking on brownies and Cookies that my husband had made. I knew it was bad and a no-no, but it had been sooooo long since I had those things. Well, Monday morning, I had an adjustment appointment and I weighed in at 261. I was so angry and mad at myself. I couldn't figure out how I gained 5 pounds in 1 week, but I bust my butt to only lose 2 pounds the previous week.... Is this possible, or was it possibly Water retention. My PA gave me a big lecture about carbs and how they affect blood sugar, insulin production, and fat storage. I felt like a little kid who had failed their science test. I weighed today and I'm back down to 258, which I'm happy about, but I'm still at a loss of the 5 pounds in 1 week. My scales are also very accurate. They are usually within 1 pound with my doctor's scales. I know there will be bumps in this road, but I didn't realize one cheat day would produce those horrible results. Needless to say, I'm back on the wagon this week and hopefully next Monday, I can see that 256 or less again....

    Here We Go..help??

You sound like a pretty bright guy and I'd like to try to talk you into investigating a Center of Excellence near you for any possible weight loss surgery you may be interested in. My PCP talked me into going to one and I'll have to say it was as good an experience as I could have hoped for. I was in a similar health situation and most of my problems have been resolved by band surgery. like most of the folks here, I've dieted most of my life and I can't really say the band made a great deal of difference, it was the total experience that did it. I learned to eat properly, developed the will power not to overeat, especially in social settings. I've lost over 60lbs in the past 4 months which was a little fast, I'm trying to build muscle back now and losing at a sustainable rate, 2 to 3 lbs a month. I haven't had any fills yet, my surgeon and I both think my weight loss is appropriate. I have energy I haven't had in years, It's been a great experience, You'll never regret it. Now for the hard part. You are going to have to find something to replace your food addiction. I make furnature, take care of my horses, have been active in ham radio for years, just anything to stay busy and away from food. Losing weight is really hard work and you'll have to put a lot of effort into it. You'll get out of this experience just what you put into it. It's worth it. Lots of luck.
  17. I think I asked before or I know there's probably a million of these post but here goes. I have been seeing the scale move and I feel like I has to do with muscle gain. I lift 3 times a week and do zumba 2 times a week. I feel like I need to add cardio. Opinions? Also if your a runner how did you start out. I think I should add running to my routine but I dred it because I feel like I'll get bored. Or as weird as it sounds I fear of getting tired quick and not being able to do it.

Surgery is scheduled for 12/8 - Yea!

Hello ladies! I just received my date for December 1st-I'm also very excited about finally reaching this point (I had a 6 month supervised weight requirement for insurance). My pre-op appointments are on 11/20 and 11/26 so I guess I'll also be on liquids the week of thanksgiving also. I believe my plan allows one lean meal per day so I'll get some nice turkey and veggies still ???? looking forward to seeing your progress!

    Stomach feels full?

After surgery, the primary drivers are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary. Your body is converting the stored fat in your body into energy. Thus you lose weight. I had RNY surgery and was restricted to 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of food per meal at the six week mark. So I thought it strange that you were consuming a cup per meal. But there are a variety of surgeries such as Sleeve and the meal limit requirements will differ. There are many different types of Protein shakes out there. To me they all taste bad. I experimented until I found one that I could tolerate. In my case it was Muscle Milk Light. I used a blender (Ninja single serving size) to blend the powder to the proper consistency. I blended in a banana to mask the taste.
  20. Thanks, this is what I thought too. I'm 350lbs and so far I've lost 11.4lbs in 2 days so I'm praying that it keeps up but I know it's prob not going to [emoji30]. How did you find the weight loss after surgery?

    Going back to gym

Diet is key. If your not loosing the weight try upping your calorie intake. 600 to 1000 cal a day and working out you should be okay.

    Sleeve at Penn in Philly?

I'm doing weight management with my primary, but the list of what they go over is in that red folder they gave out in the information session. It's behind the sample letter of recommendation for primary doctor. Sent from my HTC Desire 530 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I would review your doctor's instructions. Yes I know everybody says that. The reason why I want to stress that is that every doctor is different in what they consider mushies. My first week of mushies was only yogurt, cottage cheese ricotta. That's a far cry from anything that you can put in the blender. Remember just because it mushed in a blender doesn't mean it's the right weight. And when you eat something it's going to go into the small stomach and pull on the stitches there from the band until it passes through into the big stomach.

    Pre-Op confusion

After my initial meeting with my surgeon, he set a weight loss goal for me of 10 pounds, I think because they want to see that I am trying to change my habits before surgery. I went to the NUT at my surgeon's office and she has been amazing. We are slowly removing sugar and Diet Coke from my diet and adding Protein and Water. This is to get me ready for the surgery. Ask the surgeon for a NUT recommendation, it is likely they work closely with one or two. I would follow either the surgeon or the NUT that is recommended diet as they will be the experts when it comes to bariatric surgery. Also, it sucks that your PCP isn't on board. Mine is very supportive, which I think will ultimately help with long-term success. I hope everything works out for you!
