    Love Handles

Truly, I think its headwork, not bodywork. We all have those spots on our bodies, and with little pockets of fat, the ONLY solution to them is to lose fat overall. You cant spot reduce, so that means less calories, a lot of cardio and some strength training to increase your overall metabolism. That's the only workout plan you need. However, even then your body will lose from where it chooses. I got down to a BMI of 22, felt and looked great, but still had a muffin top and some flubber. I just came to accept it, as I held that weight for 3 years and I could see that my upper body was very thin already, so its just my pear shaped body type. Other health issues have seen me shrink to a BMI of 19 and yep, the muffin top's gone, but I also look like a concentration camp victim (I'm not kidding) above the waist. So do be realistic in your goals.

    Looking for a Support Buddy

You and I are very close in numbers, and the same height. I start my first of six nutrition class on October 6. I have to lose 25lbs. And be at least under or at a bmi of 60. My insurance requires me to have a psych eval and 6 months supervised diet. My psych evaluation is 10/10. My dr advised to start a low carb high protein diet now. Not sure how long they require for you to be smoke free as I am a non-smoker.

Getting there - slow but sure

Congrats. Your under 200 in 5 months. That is my goal lol. The other day I was a little upset and discouraged and a strange thought came to my mind. I would have probably been up 5 lbs instead of down 32lbs if i hadn't gotten sleeved 10 weeks ago. This thought gave me so much motivation. I found a pare of slacks size 16 i'm not sure who the own of this was (whether it was my moms or my old pants) but when i slipped that baby on without any issues I was in a daze. People at work notice every single day that i am looking much slimmer. I am so happy. I am 6 lbs away from being 227 which is how much i weighed when my bf and i started dating 5 years ago. I remember being comfortable at 227 so I can imagine when i hit 199. I'm looking at the bright side of this all and i couldn't be more happy. Congrats!
  5. I am new too. I have had my consultation and I go to the nutritionist on 9/23. I am going to have my psychological on 10/1 and my EKG on 10/31. I am taking Vitamin D because my doctor said that my levels were low. I have to take that for three months. I am not sure when I will have the surgery but I imagine it will probably be the latter part of the year or the beginning of next year. I weighed Thursday and I weighed 385. I am fearful that the more that I wait I will continue to gain. Does anyone else feel that way ? The highest that I have been is 465. I definitely do not want to see those numbers again.

    Caffeine

I've wondered about caffeine if it really needs to be forbidden forever. I was hospitalized for depression once about 10 years ago and they wouldn't allow any caffeine at all in the unit. Everything decaf. Because it's a stimulant I guess but since then, I've wondered how it would fit into a healthy life. I was a diet coke addict until June 9th (surgery date lol) so I'm sure it will be a huge change for me not to have them anymore.

    New GERD diagnosis

I have had GERD for about 30 years, literally. I have been on some old school meds, and then on a PPI for about 19 years now. Even post VSG, and losing all my regain, my GERD persists. yes I am still taking a PPI. I've been on them all: Protonix, Nexium, Prevacid, Aciphex, etc. I was told that after all my loss if it still persists then yes, RNY revision is my only option. I'm now 4.5 years post VSG and STILL hoping it will clear up...
  9. How are you with drinking shakes? I know we should be getting Protein from food but you have to do what you have to do. Here are some suggestions http://www.bodybuilding.com/content/ultimate-list-40-high-protein-foods.html Some Protein Bars aren't bad but most are junk. The Rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein = 10 calories in order for it to be a good source of protein. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. I've made many big changes, but the most unbelievable to me was fried foods. Even after LapBand I was eating fried foods all the time. A typical daily meal was Popeye's fried chicken strips. My weight loss had basically stopped after 10 months post op. I finally gave up my deep fried everything 20 months post op. It has totally changed how I eat now and I am not craving lousy foods anymore. Slowly my weight has started to go down again.

    The Vets Didn't Lie

Every doctor is different. I know I have heard stories of people experience serious gas pain but not all will have the same experience. I did not have any gas pain at all. But I did take the advice and walked. Our doctor wanted us to walk as soon as possible after we got to our room, within 2 -4 hours and to walk every 2-4 hours. I did the walking almost every hour for 10-15 minutes. I actually ran the battery down in my iv as it was unplugged so often.

First 4 Months After Being Lap Banded

I was banded on 10/27 and have list 23 including what I lost in preop. Its definately been slow for me but I am cool with that. I also stalled on weight loss for almost two weeks when I went to mushies. Good luck to you! This was the best decision I ever made

    New and Need Advice

I used Health One for my loan. It is 0% interest for 6 months and then is a fixed rate of 10% after that. I am trying to pay off as much as I can in the first 6 months, then I may transfer the balance over to a low interest major credit card I have. The interest on that is 5.2%. What will be your total cost for the surgery? I used Dr. Kirshenbaum in the Denver area. He only charges $9950 for everything. Many people travel there because they are self pay. Do you have a major credit card that you could charge $10,000 on?
  17. I am a 20 year old female (going to be 21 soon) and am weighing the options of doing surgery while I'm under my parent's insurance. I'm 5'4, 310 pounds (BMI of like 54) I am still in college and would plan on doing the surgery either this winter or next summer. I graduate next spring so I would have the summer to repair from the surgery until the fall when I'd start a potential job. If i didn't get the surgery within the next two years, I might have to wait like 10 or more to build up my insurance at my new job. I am working on my degree in Elementary Education. As of now, I work at a daycare and in direct care, both physically tolling jobs for an obese person. I am asked constantly from both jobs why I'm so big and if I'm pregnant. Parents sometimes look down on me as not physically capable or not being a role model for their children, which of course I want to be. I want to be able to sit in a chair and not worry about it breaking. I want to be able to lay down and not have my neck fat squished up against my chin. I want to be able to be comfortable with myself emotionally and physically. I want to buy clothes at Target and other cheaper stores that carry cute clothes without having to hide out in the plus size section. I want to be healthy and not worry about the possibility of diabetes, heart attacks, or aches/hurts in my joints. Something, though, scares me about the surgery. I'm not sure if it's the surgery itself or the thought of not eating my favorite foods after. I know it's worth it and everything and that complications are a minimal risk but what if my sutures leak? Or the biggest fear, I end up stretching my stomach out??? Someone please help me out! Should I wait and figure myself out mentally or should I do the surgery and be healthier for my future career??
  18. Just got my info today. I get 2 shakes (their brand only, I think) mixed with Water only. NO MILK!! These are in place of 2 meals. I get a 3rd meal consisting of 4 ozs of my choice of Protein (any meat, eggs, cheese or fish). They gave examples of protein as lean beef, steak, veal, turkey, chicken, any kind of fish, cottage cheese, eggs, and cheese. We are also allowed 1/2 cup of non-starchy vegetables. They gave examples of broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, green Beans, salad greens, and cucumbers. NO FRUIT, PEAS, CORN, POTATOES, TOMATOES, OR OTHER STARCHES!! We also have to take a Fiber supplement, 8 chewable orange (ugh!!!) Vitamins per day and 200 mg of CoQ-10. We must drink 64 ozs of liquid (no coffee, decaf coffee, tea, or soda). No carbonated beverages. We can also have 2 servings each of SF Jello, SF Popsicles, and broth per day in between meals. I'm pretty much typing this verbatim from my preop instructions.

Got a Fit Bit today - tips?

And whatever time u set it up, it counted the calories u burned from midnight. I've had mine for about 3 weeks and still getting used to it. Sounds like alot of calories it burns for just doing nothing. And my sleep setting doesn't work well. Had to take back the original one cuz it didn't count my sleep at all. Now it counts 14-18 hrs for 6 hrs of sleep. Not sure why. I konk out after taking a sleeping pill about 10 and forget to tap it to put it to sleep. Just came up with the idea last nite to set my alarm on my phone for 10:30 to tap it. It worked! Finally! Good luck!
  20. I have been given my pre-op diet instructions from my surgeon! He said that I need to do this diet for at least 10 days, and can do it longer if I so choose to. I would like to "try" to do it for a month. In part, to try to get my body a little ready for a big change. And also to lose weight and be as healthy as me and my fatty liver can be! So tell me... What is your pre-op diet like, if you have one? WHAT are you eating for your one "meal"??? And do you think a month is doable? Too long? I believe it's going to be insanely hard to get used to, so I want as much time to adjust as I can get! Here are my guidelines: 30g or less carbs 60-70g Protein minimum 2 shakes per day 1 lean protein meal per day 64 oz Water per day Snack can be SF Jello

    Pre op consultations

Good luck with your new journey. Because of my age and my local hospital being taken over by a big Boston one, from my first appointment until my banding was 10 months. I survived. I went to all the monthly meetings and still do go to them. They are very helpful and you learn from other WLS people. Also, I have seen on this site that people do not go to their doctor's as much as they should. That is very important. Good luck to you and your mother. Arlene
  22. I am now 5 days op with a few questions. I have gone from "I think I'm gonna die and this decision wasn't so hot" to "I'm uncomfortable but it is manageable and I will be fine in a few days. I'm glad I did this.". here are my questions: how much should I be able to drink at a time? In the morning when I get up I can drink a 10 ounce Protein shake in just at an hour. Is that too much? Should I still have pain on incision sites? I still have a pretty significant pain on my left side by one of my incision sites. How much solids should I be able to eat? I am cleared for yogurt and I was able to get down 3 ounces in about 30 minutes. Is that too much? I guess I was under the assumption i wouldn't be able to eat but a teaspoon of food at a time. I was shocked I could eat the yogurt. when I stopped at 3 ounces i didn't even feel really "full" or uncomfortable. I just stopped since it was the first time I'd eaten anything. I guess I am ultimately worried I have a leak in my stomach and I'm able to get so much food down because it is leaking into my abdomen! The doc did a leak test on me and it was fine at hospital. I just didn't think I'd be able to get this much down! Is this normal?

    Start of new journey

Wee update..... Lower body lift done 09.01.10 - unbelievably sore, worse pain ever, but would do it again!!! (had vacation in Florida 6 wks after surgery - flying from Scotland - 9hr flight - did theme parks, wore bikini, felt fabulous!) 7lbs of loose skin gone 14cm at front 10cm at sides, 2cm on back. Band slipped 03.17.11 - no pain but couldn't eat or drink for 4 days. was awful..... Went to operating theatre that night, and band was put back into place. Have gained 25lbs in 2 months.... not happy...... Bariatric Team told me a patient put on 14lbs in 10 days so don't worry about my 25lbs......!!!! Band now has 3mls in it..... another fill tomorrow....... I REALLY need restriction. This extra weight is annoying the hell outta me..... although everyone says I look better, healthier etc. I admit I feel better, permanent heartburn is now gone....no night reflux.....feeling permanently cold is gone and DH prefers me like this! Gonna get rid of this 25lbs over the next 6 months.... BTW Brachioplasty hopefully in the next 6 weeks..... yay! Sadie
  24. Everything I've heard and read is that Dr Cirangle is the best in San Francisco. I so wish I was close but I am in Ohio. I don't believe he is that expensive but people say his expertise is worth every penny. He has been doing the sleeve for 10 years or longer, a lot more than most in the eastern US. His success rate is very good so I have read. I called his nurse a few months ago and was willing to travel out there and stay for awhile but my insurance would pay nothing. Something about not living in Ca. Look him up and he also has a video of a sleeve that he did from beginning to end.
  25. I had surgery with Dr. Aceves in Mexico. He fixed the hernia at no extra cost to me. My surgeries were the reverse of yours==I had my gallbladder removed 10 months post-op and although my surgeon was worried about adhesions in the area from my VSG, he didn't have any problems getting my gallbladder out.
