    Need Help!

Don't forget that as you exercise you are building muscle, which will give you a little weight gain. Drink lots of water and don't drink when you eat. Stop focusing on the scale and just enjoy your day. It will come off whether you stress about it or not.
  2. In the beginning, it's important to eat according to the surgeon's plan to avoid issues healing. After that, it's smart to go on a slightly restricted diet until you learn to eat to your nutritional guidelines. Once your capacity increases, it's up to you on what you eat and how you do it. Keep in mind that just like prior to surgery, overindulging in any of those foods will cause a stall or an outright weight gain. I eat whatever I want, in moderation. I am not on a diet. I had the sleeve to control my portions and I refuse to live on Atkins forever. That said, eating a "normal" diet will cause you to shed the weight more slowly. So don't go in eating whatever you want once you heal and get angry that you're only losing a pound or two a week (if that). I started out immediately post op restricting my carbs very severely. After several months of slow loss, irritability, feeling denied and just plain old frustration, I opted to go a healthier route (for me) and to incorporate a more normal number of carbohydrates. My loss didn't slow noticeably, but then, I was a slower loser from day one and only averaged about six pounds off per month. So, do what you want. Again - if you sit down and consume all the ice cream you can eat (and boy, it will be a lot more than the amount of chicken breast you can eat) do not be surprised if you don't lose weight. Part of having the surgery is to learn how to eat properly and yes, sticking to a mostly healthy diet is important. I'd say I follow the "rules" (Protein first, veggies, then a tiny bit of carbs) about 90% of the time. But I eat cake or Cookies or bread if it's what I really want, in moderation. Good luck. ~Cheri

    Just Had Surgery!

Don't worry about the weight gain. I came home from the hospital 4 lbs heavier. It is the IV's. I'm so sorry you had problems. You'll get back on track. This board is wonderful for support. We all need each other.

    March Bandsters!

..Depends on your history... if you have been completely successful in keeping the weight off then you dont need the band. i guess it all depends on what sort of weight gain you have had inbetween. if you are still ahead with weight loss and dont have any other health issues that are affected by your weight then maybe you be quite good without the band. but, your dr wouldnt have agreed to the surgery if he didnt think that it would help you, would he?? Everyone of us here has had those nagging thoughts one way or another. i think its because we are walking through a door and shutting it behind us ?? anyway, you have done really well in losing so far. im sure you will do well with the surgery . im having doubts sometimes myself. i need to stop and be realistic though about my health needs right now... and not try and talk myself out of having it done. im being done in 9 days. No pre op diet.
  5. Hello everyone! I am just beginning my journey. Today I met with my psychologist and tomorrow I meet for the first time with my bariatric nutritionist (RD). I do not have to do a 6 month program with a nutritionist according to my insurance, but the program requires "up to three" visits with the RD. Any insight on what I can expect for that first RD visit? Also... the psychologist I met with today challenged me a bit (appropriately) on what my plans are post-op when I feel stress... she wanted to know what I will substitute for food to prevent future weight gain. I told her that I typically find solace in my friends, prayer, and food; I am wondering, what have you found helpful to prevent stress eating (I know the sleeve restricts intake... has this been enough to deter you from this behavior?) Thanks so much, in advance, for your counsel as I begin my journey!

    March Bandsters!

Judych: I have confidence in you! I was told that I am too fat for the band, that there was no way this would work on me. I am determined to make it work. IF in 2 yrs and the weight is not off, I can at least say I did everything I was suppose to do and I didn't create the roadblocks for myself. It won't be b/c of me that I fail. Maybe those people are right, I might fail but I am going to give it 110% .. I have been up and down with diets all my life, I have lost weight, gained weight, maintained, gained again. But this weight issue, isn't going to get me! (now ask me in a week and I might be on a low and regret it stage but for now I'm up and going to keep going)

    Help!

hi minismom sorry for your weight gain, BUT don't worry. don't beat yourself up over it. My WLS 12/15/11 - i considered the beginning of the month my funeral, and i went crazy on wild and nutty things to eat, cuz i figured i would never be able to eat them again, or in very small quantities. I did gain weight, but i was having the WLS in a couple of weeks. so i figured.... Was treating the world like it was going to end tomorrow. i wasn't required a pre-liquid or anything diet., i wish i were. I really didn't take the time before surgery seriously enough, and try to lose some weight, Some others do the same....wrong.....but mistake is done and over with. Can't change whats already happened. You on the other hand are so wisely aware of what happened with you gaining weight. You'll do better. Don't kick yourself for gaining -you'll probably lose the weight and more before WLS Surgery is not til July. I know you will work hard and probably lose some weight will come off before the WLS. Regardless, like i said, its over, can't change, sounds like you will do great. See you around the site in preparation for WLS July will be here before you know it. Best Wishes Congrats on your pending WSL kathy

  9. Need some major support as nobody in my life will understand. I was banded in 2006 and everything went smooth -- lost 120 lbs and went down to 140. Life was AMAZING, I had an amazing social life and I even worked as a promotional model for Heineken for several years (OH, the irony...) Around 2009ish, I started getting TERRIBLE acid reflux which progressed into frequent vomiting and eventually severe chest/abdominal pain. This progressed into bad complications - at some points, I couldn't even keep my own saliva down and I was vomiting several times per day. I visited my doctor and discovered that my lap band was essentially strangling my stomach and had my band unfilled. Even after the unfill, I still had terrible attacks of pain -- I would get a warning pain in my right jaw, then almost immediately afterwards would have a pain so bad in my chest that it would cause me to double over. After this experience I was TERRIFIED of the band -- I regretted ever getting it, I wanted it OUT of my body, and I became seriously depressed and had bad anxiety, mainly because I was (still am) uninsured and no doctor would do the full level of tests I needed to pinpoint the problem. Because I had gone from full-on starvation mode (barely being able to keep down liquids), I gained weight IMMEDIATELY. One thing led to another, my depression got worse from the weight gain, and I'm now back up to 230lbs. I'm frustrated with myself and I want my old life back -- I'm 28 years old and while I have a great job, I rarely go out anymore and I'm hesitant to date because of my weight gain. I really just want to feel "normal" again.... I'm terrified that I'm wasting what should be the best years of my life. That being said, I'm ready to tackle the lap band again -- I plan on calling my doctor tomorrow to get filled again --- and I'm TERRIFIED of going through the pain and complications again. Has anybody ever been through this?? I think I really just needed to vent this out to people who would understand... thank you for any support or encouragement you can share :-)
  10. Out of curiosity, was Dr. H who did your surgery? I have the exact same issue... literally, EXACTLY. I was banded in 2006, got down to 140 lbs, had what you're going through now, had my band un-filled and promptly went back up to 230 -- much of the weight gain happened within the first few months of the unfill as my body went from starvation mode into normal eating as I couldn't even keep my own saliva down. Who did you see for your follow-up? I was seeing a doctor out in Joliet who was SO wonderful, but it's much too far for me as I live in Chicago. It's been 2 years, and I'm ready to tackle this again...
  11. Can They Cause Weight Gain? Many people use artificial sweeteners to cut their caloric intake, but the very opposite effect can occur. New research shows that artificial sweeteners stimulate taste receptors that sense sweetness in both the esophagus and stomach. Anticipating energy, the pancreas releases insulin, an important hormone for accumulating body fat. At the same time, chemicals are sent to the brain’s satiety center, which becomes confused as to whether or not the body is actually receiving calories. The result? You feel even hungrier and less full, which can lead to weight gain. Are They Addictive? First, artificial sweeteners are substances some people feel they can’t live without, a sign of an addiction. Second, artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than natural sugars, such as those found in whole grains, fruits and skim milk, and can actually reset your taste buds. The body then builds up a tolerance, which can cause overuse, another sign of addiction. The theory between artificial sweeteners and weight gain extends to include addictive behavior. As the sweet receptors in the esophagus and stomach become “tricked” by the zero-calorie sugar substitute, you crave more food and become susceptible to addictive eating habits like binging or overeating. Are They Linked To Diabetes? Since artificial sweeteners cause your body to crave more food, you can put on weight, which increases your risk for diabetes. Whether you’re diabetic or not, limit yourself to no more than 2 servings of artificial sweeteners per day. (A serving size equals 1 sweetener packet or 1 diet soda.) Can They Cause Cancer? When artificial sweeteners like saccharin were first marketed, some animal studies showed an increased rate of cancer in animals. However, the FDA has done due diligence in their research for these sweeteners, and no evidence exists that moderate use in humans can cause cancer. http://www.doctoroz.com

    Struggling With Vsg Choice

You are tall and I worry if you have had the restriction I have had you will be 120 pounds when all is said and done. You being 150/160 is a perfectly fine weight for you. You are 70/80 pounds over. You will lose that before the six months is up. Your body regulated itself for many years. You gained a little with the kids, but it wasn't 60 pounds. What do you attribute your weight gain to? You are just saying getting older, but that is 60 pounds. Are you on any new medications? Did you go through anything hard? Did you lose yourself in your children (less workouts/more fast food)? I mean these are very important questions. People who are naturally thin just don't pop up and gain 60 pounds overnight just because they turn 40. Most of the people in my family are naturally thin, some of them gain weight. They can not cope with stress as two aunt's went through a divorce, but if they found out a way to take time for themselves, deal with the stress and just went for a walk the weight would come off. Then my other Aunt who was a size 2 her whole life is now a size 12 because of Crestor (Cholestorol Meds). She is in her 60's. Do not allow your poor body image (and I know what this is like) destroy you. You have something that is already working in your favor - your body. This is BIG decision, but is it the right decision for you. I would try to look for people who were the same height and needed to lose the same amount of weight as you. It worries me that you will in fact, lose too much. There is someone on her who made it to her goal weight 5 months in...Only had to lose 60 pounds or something like that. When I was 235 I never even considered this surgery even though I knew about it. I really didn't think about the surgery until I knew I could never physically do what it takes to get the weight off. If my back had healed I would have done the work, and I was up against genetics and myself (addictions). And I was hovering around 300 pounds.

    So Frustrated With Eating Out!

It is reassuring to read that others have this struggle too. I know that it's a dilemma that we all share. I also know that in some aspect I just don't want to cook myself. I have cooked for many years and had just decided I didn't want to cook any more. I call it just plain being lazy. But today is a new day and I will work harder to fix my own foods. I've noticed with me, that since I can put a limited amount of foods in my stomach, I am focusing alot more on organic foods like wild salmon, organically grown veggies, and I do avoid the processed foods when I do cook. That's my new goal. Organic foods. I can't handle the thought of eating pesticides in my food any more. I also believe that processed foods contributed a lot to my weight gain. Besides eating way too much. I just realized that I have been getting really picky when eating out, not happy when I don't know the grade of meat I'm getting. Wow, I just realized that I handle my anxiety by going out instead eating at home. Oh, I know I also have to have better time management skills to do a better job with eating healthy. SOrry for the rant. Thank you everyone for your feed back. XOXOXOXO!

    LapBand Lower Class????

And then let's talk about the growing number of RNY patients who, at several years out with a relaxed pouch and weight gain, end up getting a band. None of the procedures are a magic fix, and it still boggles me that there is a weird caste system around bariatric surgery (I've experienced it too).
  16. Thanks you speak for all of us. By you being aware of our weakness IS a strong tool. It is easier to keep it off now than before. We were out of control. Weight gain will aways be our fear. It's good to have that. It makes us stronger. You story is very real. Thank you again.

    I Need Help

I guys I'm getting a sleeve but have been thrown back by my friends comments, have you gotten pregnant after the sleeve I know I gotta wait and I will but things like food intake for the baby and weight gain after pregnancy worries me, what about infections?
  19. Well after many months and many ups and downs I finally have a date to have my eroded lap band removed. March 29th is the big day!!!!!!!!!!! I will have my surgery VERY early in the morning and will stay overnight to make sure there is no leaking from the repaired area of my stomach. Hopefully, if all goes well, in two months I will revise to either the sleeve or banded plication. There is much to consider with both of these procedures and the positives and negatives are pretty well balanced. I have read good and bad things about both procedures. Right now though, I'm just going to focus on getting the band removed and see what kind of damage it's done. So far I have felt no effects other than an occasional pull or tug or momentary pain in the area just below my sternum. I still have some minimal restriction due to there being a plastic ring in the middle of my stomach but I can pretty much eat anything I want and have been. I figure that eventually I will have the tool necessary for me to succeed so I might as well enjoy myself while I can even though the weight gain is making me feel miserable physically. I can't wait to be thin again. Weird how the mind justifies things. If I couldn't eat another cheeseburger tomorrow it wouldn't bother me, but since I can I do! Ugh. I'm definitely ready to get back on track. Let's get this party started!

    February Bandsters?

i just had a look. as far as the calories are concerned its not too bad. im a red wine drinker, its going to hurt me to have to give up my red wine. i do like a drink to relax especially when out. what alcohol has the least calories? does anyone know?? perhaps i could have the odd drink of something other than red wine. it seems that the red wine has given me more problems with my blood pressure and it certainly has contributed to my weight gain, thats for sure. i just dont think its entirely realistic to go without having an alcoholic drink socially. what do others think?

3 Weeks Post Op And Starting To Gain Weight

Reading the majority of these posts is making me very nervous...I attended my post op appointment this morning. CT scan and additional lab work came back with good results. I had lost an additional 2.4 lbs since my visit last week. Best news: I no longer am required to crush my meds!!!! I am going to begin my "mushies" in the morning, and really am concerned with regaining some of the weight I have been working to loose! I have already made a committment to be consistent with my exercise, a maximum of 5 days per week. Because of my age and status with post vehicle accident fractures still healing, and no NASIDS, the bones and joints need a couple of days off from cardio a week to manage the pain. I visited the grocery store for the first time in weeks...on the menu for the mushie week are eggs, low fat cottage cheese, yogurt, SF pudding (60 calories), halibut, canned in Water peaches, a sweet potato to bake, and fat free refried Beans, along with FF sour cream. Writing this sure makes it seem like a terrible set of menu choices, but after 4 weeks of liquids it sounds good to me! My next appointment is for 3 weeks; the doctor has informed me that he will not be doing a fill at that time. He said he wants to see my progress (or perhaps lack thereof), and at that appointment will discuss creating a fill schedule with me. I am nervous about weight gain and feeling like a failure, though I do understand that this slight weight gain is normal. I guess that the exercise will be the deciding factor... Everyone continues to do well...good encouraging news for me. Thanks for sharing the weight gain information...perhaps o won't freak out too much!

3 Weeks Post Op And Starting To Gain Weight

im 2 weeks out and have seen this.. i gained 2 lbs and freaked out. im told this is normal... as mentioned before.. im very careful now.. because since the swelling has gone down i get hungrier faster and again told this is normal.. i was afraid to eat between meals but did talkt o my nutritionist about it and she recomended i have a yogurt.. or pull my meals slightly closer together.. weight gain is normal because your body is just getting used to having food in it again after going thru the liquids.. your body thinks its not going to get anything so its storing everything you put into it. watch your carb intake and try to stay away from sugar. keep up with ur workout plana nd you will be successful.
  25. I know that many people ask the same question but just curious if others having the same problem. If you have can you share what you did to prevent weight gain till you get to the right fill level. I go in next week for first fill and follow up appt but just don't want to keep putting on weight till i get to the green zone. Thanks and appreciate any and all thoughts
