    Recommendations for a new scale

The Tanita brand scales measure your weight, body fat, body water, lean muscle, visceral fat, etc. They are not cheap, but not crazy expensive either. This is the same brand used in my surgeon's office, but their particular model is fancier. You can set up multiple users for some of the models. I got mine from Amazon and we both really like it.

    Weight gain before surgery

I gained 2lbs before my surg. It did not delay anything and no one even said anything to me about it.
  5. amberj- i have bcbs in wash state. i went to my 1st seminar sept 7th, and started the paperwork. they approved me 100% in nov, and i just got banded dec 13th. they required a psych visit. a nutritionish visit, a note from my dr stating why she thought i would be a good canidate. she knew of my struggles with my weight and my family history. i also had to have weight watchers fax my year long history with them. bcbs approved me within 3 weeks- god bless them ! im down 14 lbs and it has all been VERY easy. good luck to you !!
  6. How/when did you choose your goal weight? Did your surgeon provide input?
  7. Congrats on you weight loss. When one's sagging skin pulls on one's spine or neck to the extent to cause severe pain and necessary spinal/cervical reconstruction , THEN the damage that excess skin can do will be realized. Does it happen to everyone? of course not Does it happen to enough to be a consideration to pre-op WLS folks? Absolutely! Is skin removal surgery major and painful? WLS itself is a walk in the park compared to skin removal surgery. (MHO). So, please don't take skin surgery lightly, but when needed, there is no choice. It is not always for cosmetic reasons.

    Tricare North - Bariatric Help

I am Tricare North Standard. In 2009 I was 5'2", 253 lbs., BMI 46 with HBP, cancer, and depression. Approved for lapband in a day. They required my weight history, mental health eval, other things were doctor requirements. I lost about 80 lbs. and kept it off for 6 years. Band started giving me issues with my esophagus and needs to come out. TriCare approved removal in a day, denied a revision to bypass. However, my doc did a peer to peer; on the website it looks like they have now approved the revision. That's not official yet, but if it is then it only took about four days for them to make that happen.
  9. I had a Board celebration to attend last night (we just completed a $1.2 million fundraiser to renovate the stage in the theater I am Board president of) and was going through my closet in some frustration yesterday morning. They've seen this, they've seen that, they've seen that one a hundred times...Then, at the very back of the closet, was a black sheath with a floral jacket that I hadn't worn in over 10 years! I didn't know I even still had the thing! It was my favorite dress for a long time, and I used to wear it when I was this weight before, so....maybe.... I tried on the jacket, and voila! It fit! I was so excited all day, I could hardly wait to get dressed up for the fete! I have to attend 2 or 3 very dressy events each year for this theater, and I have never felt "pretty" even though I'm dressed to the nines. Last night, I felt pretty and the compliments were just rolling in! This morning I feel like I could go shopping...and I HATE shopping!
  10. Hi all, I am almost 1 year out from my surgery date (I have lost 121 total pre-op and post op). I am going on vacation in 58 days (but who's counting) and I would like to lose another 15 pounds in that time. I don't think I can do it because I am losing much slower now. I do exercise 3-6 times a week (pretty intense workouts). I am wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions to help me get try to get to my goal before vacation. It's not my final goal I just want to be under 200 by the time I go on vacation. I thought I would be at my true goal now which is about another 55 pounds from where I am now. So I still have weight to lose, just very slow. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  11. This isn't a weight-loss specific site, but it's a blog I've been reading for about a year or so now, and I just love it. The guy who runs it (Chef John) is a professional chef down in California and he does short online videos of all his recipes (He's also an about.com food guide and a foodbuzz featured publisher). It's great especially for people who may not be the best cooks cause you can kindof get a better idea for the technique of things by watching. Also, Chef John is rather funny, so the videos are not only informational, but entertaining as well. chicken.html" rel="external nofollow">some-good-frickin-paprika-chicken chicken-chili-or-chile-verde chicken-caesar-springrolls-ultimate-low-carb-wrap getting-under-skin-for-great-big-juicy-breasts turkey-chili-mooooooove-over-chuck garlic-fennel-and-orange-grilled chicken-breasts-with-herbs-de-provence budget-beef-merlot-succulent-beef roasted-pork-tenderloin-with-fresh-plum roast-pork-tenderloin-with-apple-dijon italian-meatballs-lets-get-rolling i-have-met-enemy-and-he-is-me-please black-pepper-crusted-pork-tenderloin Hope you enjoy!!

5 Weeks Post Op And Feeling Discouraged

Please don't be discouraged. You will get there. Dont watch the scale so much. It will torture you. It's going to take a year or so for the dramatic results. Just keep doing what you are doing. You didn't lose last week but you didn't gain either....
  13. I think I feel restriction. I am scheduled for my first fill on 7/2/08 but my appetite is minimal. I am more aware of the smells and look of food, and that makes me think I am hungry. I have been sticking very closely to what the doctor requests for my diet. I still feel fatigue and am not quite up to the exercise level I would like. I am cautious eating foods and my upper chest and throat feel tight often. I am most excited about my weight loss progress.

When are you able to start running?

My surgeon said wait 6 weeks before strenuous exercise (like weight lifting and running). I was the same way -- walking and walking and walking and when that 6 week point got here, boom, out for a run I went!!! Running when skinny is much more fun.

    Lapband vs lapband with plication?

no one WLS is better then the next..all WLS require work and a mental change and a def change in eating habits and begin to exercise to make the most of whatever surgery one gets. the plication as my dr told me is my stomach folded into itself and stitched to make a small banana like (sleeve) if you will..it will (and has) helped me eat less and since this is a new procedure and still in early trials, i had to sign waivers on it...my dr did it pro bono for me....i was super morbid obese and the dr wanted me to have the bypass and i said no.....so he offered me this with the band but STRESSED that if didnt follow the lap band rules (eating my allotted amounts, stop eating junk food and begin to (move), no WLS would help me...... most WLS can and will help one lose at the beginning (the pre and post op diets helps with fast mainly all Water weight loss) and its amazing and its a confidence booster......and then when people REALIZE that they cant eat what they use too and just push it and overeat anyhow or not follow the rules, then the surgery isnt working..and 10 or more posts a day on this forum saying what am i doing wrong etc.. get whatever one you want but understand that its not a miracle....it will help you if you help it...i am living proof of that......but i also know/understand if i dont do my part the bypass, the sleeve or the DS or the band or plication wont work..people rush into WLS in my opinion thinking i had surgery and now i will automatically lose 100 pounds in a week..doenst work that way....a total mindset and attitude change is a must for success..esp when one was as large as me when i started..i either did it the right way, or got bigger...i had no other options.
  16. I just created a bio with all my issues but can't find it so here goes ... I had my sur. Nov,2004. I have had only one unfill in that whole time. I had a thyroidectomy May 27th, 2008. I am a cancer survivor and now cancer free but in the three months post op that surgery, I gained 30# and am having problems getting it off and I have abnormal CBC lab values low hemoglobin and hematocrit and elevated white count and more than doubled platelets. I have subsequently had an upper GI and lower last month resulting in (from biopsy) a lot of undigested food above the band, a bacterial infection of the stomach lining, and diverticulitis. I am on Tetracycline, Biaxin, and Previced for 14 days. I am in pain and my abdomin looks like an eight month pregnacy. I have had much pain in my life as I have lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes and few lesser issues. Those are the heavy hitters. I think I am going to have the band removed because if there is undigested food above the band the infection will reoccur. Has anyone had theirs removed????
  17. So I am still in the planning stages, but have made my decision on gastric sleeve. I have about 80-100 lbs to lose. THere is so much info out there that has helped, but would like some direct first hand answers! I am debating between Dr Leon or Dr Ortiz in TJ. Any thoughts? I am concerned with feeling like a normal person. How long before you felt normal, as in you could eat normal healthy food (just in much smaller portions) I will not live the rest of my life on soft food and Protein shakes will I? I am 5"8. Every one talks about skin. I know its different for everyone, but does everyone have lots extra skin? Do you have more with sleeve than you would just traditionally losiing weight? I have lost about 70 lbs before (gained back of course) and did not have any skin. That mean i probably won't this time? Now my weight is very evenly distributed everywhere Will I lose my hair?? I want to get this started asap...If I chose April 8 surgery date, I will be vacationing in Florida May 2. Will I be miserable, what would i be eating by then?
  18. So I forgot to put this last week. I was reading some article in People magazine that was about that country singer that's married to Garth Brooks. I know her because of her cooking show on food Network: Trisha Yearwood. She's lost about 30 pounds and I figured this would be the same old kind of article about eating right and exercise that we always see. It wasn't. She was so honest about living her life at size 16 for decades and just wanting to be able to be less tired. The thing I thought was so cool about this piece was when she said a couple of weeks ago after some awards thing her and Garth were flying back and she ate an In N Out burger with fries and a coke and she had two Peanut Butter cups. Usually she'd just go "Well, my diet is ruined so I might as well just keep eating everything I want to eat" but now she thinks "Ok. I splurged. No big deal." and the next day she ate like she was supposed to and went to Zumba class and that was that. And she didn't have any weight gain and realized this is how normal people eat. Normal people do not beat themselves up everytime they have a burger. Normal people do not constantly think about food or the ramifications of having a piece of chocolate. As long as your indulgences are limited to splurges and not an everyday occurence, we should stop being so obsessive and negative towards ourselves. I really found this helpful. I am just like that. I'll eat chips and think "Well, since I've already come this far" when really I just need to go "Those were a great treat. Where's my Water?" instead. Alright. That's all. Just felt like sharing. Ters

    STALL!

I am 2 weeks post op and right there too. STALL. In fact I gained 2 lbs when I went on full liquids. I eat maybe 1 can of Soup strained and divided up throughout the day. I have a coupe SF pops and my Water. Not much else. Really sad about this even though I heard people venting on the forums post op. I am trying not to weigh myself everyday. That only adds to my sadness about the situation. That and people asking if I have lost X amount of weight yet... GRRRR>..
  20. @@bring I am so sorry to hear this. I, too, am struggling with this problem. Most people say, "When you hit a plateau, exercise more." What if one can't? I went into this with a "pretty-sound" body. Little did I know that the mobility issues that I thought were weight/age related, were really a very serious Hip disease. Now, I am facing, at age 52, a bilateral hip replacement. Any exercise, including Water aerobics, causes pain. It isn't debilitating yet, normal, everyday movements cause just modest pain. But it is increasing every day. I went to 2 orthopedists, hoping for better news. The second was worse than the first. Has anyone else suffered from pain, loss of range of motion that limits exercise? How did you cope?

    4oz of food?

Either way, really - whatever is most convenient for you. If you consider that in these early mushy and soft phases most foods are close to the density of water (which scientifically is the measurement standard as 1oz volume = 1 oz weight) then it doesn't really matter. I find weighing to be much more convenient as one isn't continually cleaning measuring cups and spoons; even when cooking I rarely use measuring cups as the European method of weighing things is a lot easier.
  22. I am two and a half years out from my surgery. I have gained six pounds but I feel like I have gained inches. My sizing varies. I can still wear clothes at my smallest and I can wear clothes that are one size up. I am under a lot of stress at work and have no time to exercise. Can anybody that is at least two years out relate to this? Tell me where you are and how you are doing? Any suggestions?

    Exercise suggestions

I swear by the elliptical. I love it. And recently I've started doing different programs (there is a weight-loss setting, cross country, uphill, etc....they basically offer just varied levels of resistance and challenge) instead of just sticking to one. When I can afford to have a piece of gym equipment in my house, that will be the first one I buy!

Why does everything have to include food?

I know! It's crazy! During the 6 months weight management program required by my insurance I noticed that a lot. Date night = dinner and a movie. lunch with mom on Saturdays. Taking the kids out = fast food and movie (with popcorn). Meetings at work = pot luck or birthday cake. Overtime on Saturday = doughnuts or bagels brought in by the boss. Birthdays, holidays, just a regular day = food, food and more food. And I am hating my Protein powders/drinks. Ugh. Jennifer
