Lactose intolerant post surgery?
Lisa B replied to Lisa B's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for the responses, all. And thanks, Jack, for that vision of "old putrified and fermenting products" - that is something that is going to stick with me for a while! (Or hopefully not, as the case may be!) Jachut, fortunately coffee isn't one of my vices, so I'll take your word that's it's the strong stuff that may be setting you off. Interestingly, I saw my doc yesterday for the one-week followup, he's moved me to soft foods, and I've had a couple of yogurts and some cottage cheese since then. No gas today, but yesterday was really bad - keep me up at night, bad. Who the frell knows what it means, but I'm guessing it's another point toward Jack's putrifying remains. Hee, sorry Jack, couldn't resist. PS Jachut - you look awesome and are an inspiration. My excuse is that I'm six years older and I'll never wear a bikini like that! -
I only eat fish, so that's a big part of my daily protein. I mix it up with FF refried beans, a few pine nuts tossed in my salads, and any FF version of dairy with good protein like cheese, cottage cheese, and yogurt. I'm usually too full to deal with starches, so an occasional bit of potato is a treat but not something I care all that much about. I never eat bread or pasta (by choice), and I can't stand the taste of those Boca or veggie burgers. *blech* Yes, I have a very boring diet, but I like it that way.

My surgeon gave me the following: Post surgery day 1 and 2 Clear liquid diet days 3-16 full liquid (thinned baby rice Cereal, fat free vanilla yogurt, vegetable juice...etc) day 17 - 30+ Puree/blenderized diet (low fat soft cheese, fat free 1% cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, low fat cheese omelete, pureed Soups...) I have to be honest and say I have had mashed up talapia, a scrambled egg and cottage cheese....no issues, but the hunger is insane....trying to drink Water and also doing my unjury Protein shakes to make sure I get my 60 grams of protein in. When you have your post op follow up with your surgeon, talk to him/her about your diet, they may or may not tweak it. I wish you all the best!

I'm starting the 5 day pouch test tomorrow. I am at 3.5cc now, and today I had a frisco burger from Hardee's. It wasn't even good. I'm just sabotaging myself because I know I can. I should add, I started myplate back again today and after seeing the gross amount of calories in the burger, I adjusted the rest of my day. 140c yogurt, 200c of crab & 2 handfuls of red grapes.

What Was Your First Soft Food Experience Like after Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
BamaXpress78 replied to BamaXpress78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. I guess I imagined that if I took small bites (which to me is basically about 1/4 teaspoon), chewed really well, and waited a couple of minutes between bites then I wouldn't have any problems. But after thinking it over maybe my bites were a little larger than they should have been and maybe the couple of the bites I didn't wait long enough. I completely get the restriction part and so glad that I have this working for now. I am just going to have to give it some time as far as capacity. Tonight for dinner I boiled and egg and made some egg salad (using light mayo, greek yogurt, and seasonings) and it went down really well not to mention I didn't miss the gobs of full fat mayo I used in the past to make it. Thanks again for all your help and advice! -
You don't DRINK the vinegar, you hold it in your mouth, then spit it out. lol. Surprisingly, my 10yo dd LOVES that program Nova Science Now! We watch it all the time. Pammie... maybe frozen peas or corn would work the same as the blueberries but not stain? Make a vanilla yogurt/protein powder/frozen blueberry smoothie w/the berries... Work today... got a little burned @ the pool yesterday, esp. my eye lids... weird. It's grey today, calling for thunderstorms, so just as well I've got all this work to do! Enjoy your Friday!

My surgery was a success and recovery is somewhat slow then I expected. I have some pain but not a lot matter fact the only time I feel real pain is when I cough or sneeze. I having a hard time in getting water in. But I am able to eat yogurt, jello and protein shake. I will just be glad when I can get these staples removed. I also realize some of my clothes are getting big. I almost forgot is anyone having some tenderness in their legs I just noticed it today? Call my insurance 24 hr nurse line and she said that I can just keep on taking the blood thinner and everything should be ok. I will probably call my doctor's office tomorrow to be on the safe side. I will be glad when my life gets back to some type of normalize.

Pre- op diet: shakes are so horrible
TheRealMeIsHere! replied to jersey0601's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried EAS AdvantEdge RTD? They are not as thick as some others. strawberry reminds me of strawberry Quik chocolate Fudge is like YooHoo Cafe Caramel tastes like iced coffee. Just keep trying different shakes till you find what you like, everyone's tastes are different. What about Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt? Yogurt counted as a liquid on my program, or even Protein puddings. Where can I find these? I had someone in my support group say the same thing, but I have been unable to find these in shake form (I can only find the protein powder.) I get them in Walmart, which has the best price here, or Shoprite. -
6 days post op and hardly able to eat...help!
llynn1013 replied to teacherica's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also banded on 12/22/08 and am not really hungry. My brain says I am hungry but my stomach does not. Yesterday all I could eat was 3-4 oz of nonfat mocha, about 5 oz of liquid re-fried beans and a frozen gogurt (the kids to go yogurt). I am forcing myself to eat. I am worried I won't lose weight because my body will think I am starving. Although, I am down already 6.6 lbs since Monday. -
What to eat before early morning workout???
Stacy160 replied to BrittanyAnn1's topic in Fitness & Exercise
When I was running a lot in the summer (waaaaaaayyy back in the good ol' days... ), my favorite thing to have was Greek yogurt. I knew I was getting fuel, it didn't make me feel full, and just sat in there so nice and comfortably with no issues at all. Plain, with a little vanilla extract and Splenda. I'm planning on getting on the treadmill a little later today and I don't have Greek, but I do have Kroger Carbmasters (which, if you're not familiar with it, is like any typical "diet" yogurt, thinner and not real substantial, but good) so I think I'll see how I feel with that. -
Ok I have to admit I have not been adding up my calories so I just went and did it, Today I had 550 calories and I would say that pretty much represents my days. For Breakfast Protein shake: 110 Snack greek yogurt with berries 145 lunch 3 turkey meat balls and some green Beans 150 A bite of a bagel (not typical) 35 calories dinner 2 Asian spring rolls (trader joes) 100 calories Each meal I could not get any more food in, so now I am am making myself have some apple with almond butter. How do I get more calories in if I am full??? I frustrated because I am in a stall and I am sure it is from starvation mode. I excerise 30 minutes in the morning doing step aerobics on the Wii.

Hi, I'm new here although I have been lurking a while. I think this is a fascinating thread. My husband and I have had this discussion a number of times. I was recently sleeved, and he is finishing up the process and hopes to have his done in December. Like Joe, above, we have had multiple discussions about food in the house. I do all of the shopping and cooking for the family and over our 18 years together have learned to be very careful about what I buy. (For example, no tubs of ice cream in our house! If I buy them, they get eaten late at night by my husband.) And he regularly asks me to hide certain foods from him, which I hate. While there isn't a lot of junk in our house at all, he will also eat multiple yogurts if they are in the refrigerator (for example.) He's working with a specific therapist for these issues before the surgery, of course…but I will be very curious to see how we do as a couple with our sleeves. The one thing I've noticed even though I'm very early on is that my compliance to this program is all on me, and if i get upset about what other people are eating or give me access to, I'm going to be a very lonely girl. Anyway, thanks for starting the thread.

Don't those Greek yogurts taste sour? I haven't tried one, but I know I don't like plain yogurt. Could I add SF syrups to Greek yogurt? Obviously I can add fruit. You tell me...

Well, here's the scoop on yesterday's second fill results. Yesterday was an all liquid day so it was a wash (awash - get it?) as far as testing restriction. Today was a mush day up until dinnertime. Breakfast and lunch were yogurt and cottage cheese - each a measured quarter cup. dinner was going to be scrambled eggs, but the chef made a slice of ham steak also. I gave it a try, with chewing a priority. I only needed about a quarter cup of scrambled egg and four small bites of ham before hearing that small voice of the lapband saying enough...any more and you'll be overdoing it. I'm both surprised and pleased at the feedback that I'm getting from the band. It does speak - but its up to me to listen and obey. There used to be a series, I think on Masterpiece Theater, called "Rumpole of the Bailey", about an English lawyer who called his wife "She who must be obeyed". That is going to be adjusted slightly and my lapband will henceforth be known as: " It Which Must Be Obeyed!"

Hi Suz1! I won't spend time here telling you how idiotic I think your surgeon is for not prepping you BEFORE the surgery... wait, I just did. Well, anyway, like you, I was in a whole lotta pain. I honestly spent the first 7 days wondering if I had made the right decision. I'm now three full weeks out from surgery and I'm feeling great! The gas pain (that radiated from my abdomen to my shoulders and neck) was so bad that the liquid vicodin didn't help. Since the vicodin was adding to the constipation, I got off it after day two. I advise you to do the same. You may find, like I did that the pain you're experiencing is related to the gas. In that case, walking will DEFINITELY help. My energy picked up when I started eating the soft foods, like yogurt. If your nutritionist didn't give you written info- guidelines- you may want to call her and ask for them. That way you can go over them at your leisure and maybe not be so overwhelmed. Take it easy on yourself, your body is working to heal from what it thinks is a pretty traumatic experience. Follow ALL of your surgeon's instructions, and be sure to keep him apprised of any changes that you feel are not right. Don't worry, you made the right decision. In a few weeks, you'll feel MUCH better.

It's not vomiting as you know it pre-banding. It's more of a baby-spitup type deal. You have something inside that doesn't agree with your band, you get rid of it, you feel good again. I've been banded 19 months, only had to PB once in a restaurant and that was due to a rather stressful situation (had picked up my dd from the ER in a another city after she totaled her car.. major stress). I had plenty of warning, it was no big deal. In fact, it was almost a year before I had my first pb episode at all.. everyone varies so much in their reactions to the band and how they eat afterwards. Sliders are foods that are soft and slip past the band and don't contribute to satiety. Things like Ice Cream and Yogurt are obvious sliders. Less obvious ones are Popcorn and salads (sometimes). What is a slider for one person might not be for another person. Grilled chicken for me is a very hard food to eat. It's often dry and will get stuck and cause a pb episode quicker than other foods. I usually get grilled or baked fish, but then again I'm a seafood lover. Keep asking questions.. we all learn that way.

16 oz or 32 oz container of Greek fat free yogurt mixed with cheesecake SF pudding mix. 16 oz tastes like a thick cheese cake. I like it a bit lighter so I do about 25 oz with one box of pudding mix. Can also add graham cracker crumbs on top or make with chocolate or other flavor of pudding. SF pudding...but adds scoop of Protein powder in each bowl.

How i lost 80lbs in 6 months eating anything I want!
ualaw08 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Yes that's right! Anything I want! 6 months ago I was absolutely miserable. While eating anything I wanted, I was gaining weight like crazy. My body would hurt and I could not fit any shoes with the exception of loafers. I would plan my my whole day around eating. I would plot how would wake up early just to stop by Dunkin Donuts. There I would by about 6 donut holes and 2 chocolate covered donuts and wash them down with a 20 oz soda. When I arrived at work 2 hours later ( I know, hell of a commute) I would be hungry again and would most likely eat another whole Breakfast or snack. I would down coke before lunch and couldn't wait for 11:00 to come to indulge in whatever the hospital cafeteria was serving. I would cancel meetings some days because it was too far of a walk across the hospital and my feet would hurt terribly or I would be too embarrassed to walk in out of breath. By 3:00, I was ready for a sweet indulgence and when I left, on my way home I would eat McDonald's. If my husband cooked. I would eat again once arriving home. That was my life. 6 months later. I wake up early to make a smoothie made of spinach, blueberries, strawberries and Water. For lunch, I eat a lean and green never eating more than 4-5 mouthfuls (I throw away so much money). For dinner I juice all sorts of fruits and veggies. If I'm hungry in between? Nuts. Do I have something carby from time to time? Yes! Do I have something sweet from time to time? On my way to get frozen yogurt now! Do I eat anything I want? Yes! So how have I lost 80 lbs in 6 months? Because this surgery has made it so that I mostly only want clean, healthy foods. I hate eating out of a bag or box or can. I love colorful foods and fresh foods. I crave them! This surgery has changed my life! I still have about 50 more pounds to go, but I am looking forward it! New day! New life! New me! -
January 2014 Sleevers Come In!
luckyme2g replied to HipsAndLipstick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Laura, my version of the full liquid diet includes 3 protein drinks per day plus 3 snacks of yogurt or low fat milk plus 2 strained cream soups per day. I am sure your nutritionist wiki have a similar plan, but it may vary slightly. This is only for days 8-10 of the pre op diet for me. -

So damn hungry...
tami wright replied to holidayexpressions's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Almond milk has very low Protein in it. Use soy if you are having trouble getting enough protein! I use almond milk occasionally now (3 months post op) but when I do I'm using Greek yogurt and a scoop of Protein powder with it in my shake. So I "fix" the low protein aspect of the almond milk. Sent from my iPad using VST -
I definitely know what you mean! I’m 5 days out from my sleeve and it’s so weird not being hungry. Of course I would love to chow down on a ribeye and loaded potato but obviously that’s mental hunger. It is kind of weirding me out. Today was my first day back to work and all I’ve had is a protein shake, a half a portion of broccoli cream soup, a popsicle, and a half a single container of yogurt. And I’ve still got to get 10 more grams of protein and almost 15 ounces of fluid before I go to sleep. It’s a weird feeling to physically not be able to eat anymore when we are so used to eating way too much with ease. Good luck and let me know if you come up with any tricks! Haha

how long were you off work?
Staci replied to MeMeMEEE's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took I took off 8 work days off. I was tired the first few days but keep a small fridge in my office stocked protein shakes I took to work with me. Now I keep it stocked with cheeses, shaved lunch meat, and yogurt so I can sneak a protein filled snack when I need it. I didn't want to use vacation time, I want to use that when I can enjoy it, so when I exhausted my PTO I decided I felt well enough to go to the office. Everybody is different so do what feels good for you!! Best wishes!!!! -
Update: Not featured: yogurt, chicken & chocolate chip cookies a friend made for me. (More tea, hot chocolate, coffee & water) The Cookies: they were not protein variety lol so *technically* I'm still on plan, but it's more about me not being a DB when visiting people who go out of their way with hospitality. I'll survive if I have a cookie, especially after walking 2 miles to see them.
