    Gaining Weight?!?!

    There are two types of weight gains/losses. Most of the weight you lose in the beginning will be Water loss. It depends on how much you have to lose. The more you weigh, the more fluids you retain. Fat loss is what you really want. So don't pay much attention to short term gains as they can be just Fluid retention. I can go up or down 7 lbs in one week(all fluides) if I go nuts and eat chips, ice cream etc. If you are eating healthy foods and keeping your caloried count down you probably are not gaining fat. tmf
  2. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh and here is my update from today on obesityhelp regarding my platelet counts and prednisone therapy: PLATELET COUNT - 121,000 WOOT WOOT. . . The Prednisone worked beautifully, and all the crankiness, little weight gain, increased hunger ARE ALL WORTH THE END RESULT ! ! ! "Thank you" just isn't enough for me to say at this point for all y'alls support and prayers/good thoughts/swinging chickens ! ! ! We were hoping for a jump to at least 85,000 and here we are at almost normal level. Just for reference, I started off around 70,000. Again, without VSG this would not have been possible, and I'm elated and beyond blessed once again that I chose the "right" surgery for me, for all the "right" reasons ! ! ! I'm cleared for the epidural, and will be awake for Tatum's arrival ! ! !

    Weight Gain.

    I finally got the nerve to weigh today. 239lbs. Thats early AM while I was running on empty after a workout so I know it would be more under normal conditions. I had gone down to 226lbs before. So don't think you cant gain folks. 13lbs is no joke. I have my work cut out for me I see. I will keep u informed. I'm planning a active weekend for sure and to watch the diet. I can simply eat more than I should I may schedule an appt. with the Doc. I will use you all as leverage. I will report my losses here and I promise they will come quickly........
  4. I'll be happy to be able to play with my soon-to-be 8 year old son. I'm not ready to be granny too quick (LOL) -- my oldest is married already, but her hubby is in military and in Japan, so they're not ready to start yet (whewww) My youngest is more active and I'd love nothing more than to be able to put on a pair of shorts and chase him down!!!!!! I can't wait to get started. I'm already trying to change my mentality about food, etc. My husband and I were able to quit smoking New Year's eve, 2005 (and have stayed off) with the help of a reputable hypnotist. But hence the weight-gain!! My family was harping on us to quit 'for health' reasons, but I told them how healthy are we now? We can get sick & die of complications of smoking or geee---- how healthy is the weight gain and what goes with that? High blood pressure, heart problems and a host of other things!!!!! At least I was happy smoking -- I enjoyed it. I don't enjoy being fat. All the ranting & raving, we've managed to stay off the cigarettes, and we never thought we'd ever be able to do that. So if we can win that battle --- I pray I can win this battle with obesity, too!!!! Thanks for all the great support! I'm so happy to have found you!!!!!!
  5. Hi! I am new here and I just got approved for surgery Feb 12, 2013! I wanted to introduce myself and am so appreciative to find this forum. about me: I have been struggling with weight since about the age of 8. I remember going to weight watchers at the age of 12. After college, I gained 40lbs in one year. I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which doesn't help with the weight. I love to eat- I eat for all occasions- happy, sad, stress, etc.... BUT I am tired of food ruling my life! I have always lived to eat and I want to change that. I want to eat to live! I gained more weight after two kids and have been quite miserable. I have done many different diets and lifestyle changes but it is typical...lose weight, gain it back plus some. I looked into surgery a couple years ago but my insurance did not cover it. In November, we switched insurance companies and they cover it! Here is my timeline of events: 11-10-12- Information session 11-12-12- Verify benefits 11-12-12- complete and return questionnaires to doctor 11-16-12- view on line EMMI presentation 11-29-12- Bariatric screening with nurse and dietitian 12-10-12- psychological evaluation 1-3-13- Consult with surgeon- Dr. Amir Heydari 1-21-13- Request for authorization for surgery sent 1-24-13- Approved! wow that was fast (though they did not call and tell me until 1-28-13) 1-24-13- 1st pre-op class 1-31-13- 2nd pre-op class 1-31-13- pre-op appointment with surgeon 2-2-13- Begin pre-op diet 2-12-13- Surgery scheduled! I am so excited and nervous all at once. I have prayed for this and God has heard my cry. I know it will NOT be easy but I am so ready for this.
  6. I have a stretched pouch,, and have been UNFILLED FOR 2, GOING ON 3 MONTHS.. I WENT today for a fill and Dr. said I am still stretched, but NOT SLIPPED>..So I am just going to stay unfilled and really watch what I eat so I dont gain any more weight.. I will take some weight gain over ANOTHER SLIPPED BAND, MY COST TO FIX A SLIPPED BAND IS 5000. I am a happy camper today

    Protein Help?

    MeginNola, I had not thought of creating my own protein drink for myself. I think I might give that a try too as I have all of your suggested ingredients at home! I have been creating a protein shake on the recommendation of a coach for my son that he loves. It is milk, a little vanilla ice cream, peanut butter and banana. I would NEVER drink that of course, since it does not fit in with my nutrition goals, but for a football player who is working out all the time and trying to fuel his muscle and weight gain it is perfect, and much cheaper than my shake mix!
  8. I was scheduled for plastic surgery last week, but had to postpone. Now, I'm questioning my decision to have surgery, mainly because I'm worried about gaining weight during recuperation because of inactivity and boredom, and I'm worried about getting off track with exercise, which is a huge priority for me. Can those of you who've gone through this already please share your experiences regarding weight gain (or loss) following plastics? Thanks! The choices I'm listing in the poll are: **I lost weight following plastic surgery. **I temporarily gained weight due to swelling, but lost it within 2-3 months after surgery. **I gained weight after surgery, and I'm still struggling to get it back off, but it was still worth it. **If I had to do it over, I'd skip plastics because of the re-gain. **Other (please explain) Edit to add: forgot to allow for a "have not had plastics" option.     Excessive drinking

    Anybody else having this issue? The more depressed I get about my huge weight gain the more I am drinking to forget. I'm doing this instead of eating. Anyone else going through this? Pretty sure this is contributing to my possible ulcer.

    So Frustrated!

    Be patient with yourself and the process. We all went through something like this. Your body just had surgery and has to take a break to heal and adjust to the losses experienced. Each of us do this stall at different times and for different lengths of time and for some of us it happens often. But guaranteed your weight will start dropping again soon and if you are following the rules (i.e. enough Protein, sleeping, eating right, exercising and drinking enough water) there is no way you will not lose this weight. Honestly at your stage it will not stop. I had a major stall in the second month for almost 3 months, that included gaining weight. Heck, I just gained back almost 2 pounds in the last couple days. Am I frustrated yes, but I now know it will start up again and to just keep on plugging away. I even raised my excercise level and still gained. It is what it is and your body is doing what it has to handle all the changes. We did not lose this overnight and it is unrealistic to expect it to happen that quickly (I remember being lectured with that same quote and boy did it annoy me at the time lol), so reevaluate your goals and expectations and stop worrying. You are doing awesome, you have lost a lot of weight already and it will come off and you will love the new you, we promise!! Three months out from surgery today and have lost halfway to my goal weight even with all the stalls and weight gains I keep experiencing. OH!! measure yourself everywhere and write it down, then every week check those measurements because those change even when you are not losing weight and it is nice to see that progress as well. best of luck and keep strong it is worth it!!

    Is my BF sabotaging me?

    I can really relate to your post. My husband became the food police, and started offering me little bites of his ice cream or other junk food while I was in the losing stage. I always declined, and then the comments would start. We had to really sit down and talk about my issues. He does NOT understand the need for surgery, even though he was supportive and knew that I was going to lose weight he was NOT prepared for me to get so small. He wanted me to quit losing at around 175lbs, and felt that was small enough. The comments about leaving him after you lose weight are directly tied to his own insecurities and there's nothing you can do but reassure him that you'd leave due to his behavior whether you were fat or skinny. My husband got really possessive, and would make me uncomfortable in public with his constant need to touch me and "claim" me as his property. He pulled some major b.s. on me once when a man came up and was just being polite by saying "hi, how are you?" He rushed over, slid his arm around my waist, and kissed my forehead. I looked right at him and said "Stop hiking your leg on my thigh!". He was so mad that another man would even speak to me, and it did cause a lot of conflict. What he failed to ever recognize is that I got hit on before even at 270lbs yet he was never intimidated or threatened by other men when I was fat. It was a long road for us, but we communicated and worked through it. Once I reached goal weight, I continued to lose another 25lbs. It got even worse, and we really had to sit down and talk it out. I had to remind him that I was healthy, that I was not starving myself, that I was eating double the calories and carbs that I ate during my losing stage, and that I was under direct care of multiple doctors. He still to this day tries to get me to eat more because my surgeon believes I need to maintain around 140lbs instead of 125lbs, and that I would not look so thin. So, I made the mistake of taking him with me to an appointment where my surgeon addressed my maintenance weight. I've never been able to live it down, and now with the 30-33lbs weight gain in the pregnancy, and the urging of my ob's to keep my weight around 140lbs once I deliver, it is even worse. He's hidden the scale, he's back to being the food and medication police, every day I hear how much did you eat today, did you take your meds, and Vitamins, did you drink all your Water? Every day it is a battle. At this point, and being over 2 years out, it's a lost battle, he's lost a lot of his possessive tendencies, but the fact that my face and neck has plumped out in the pregnancy, he likes it better. He has a preference for me to be a bit bigger, and a little more fluff, it's just so difficult. I have no magic answers or solutions. I just want you to know you are not alone, and I wish I had some fabulous solution, but alas, it's a struggle for us even being this far out. It spurs a fight/argument a couple times a week because he knows that I plan on getting back down to my original maintenance weight. He's so mad that I have moved my pregnancy clothes out of the closet and have pulled out all my "tiny" clothes in preparation to wear those again.

    Great Products!

    I couldnt live without my vitamix blender - but its a big investment. Whilst I had restriction, it enabled me to eat enough fruit and vegies - makes great Soups, smoothies etc. Now I'm on a low residue diet to manage chemotherapy and without it, all I could eat would be white bread, rice, Pasta and Protein, again, it pulverises the fruits and vegies so that I can eat them without them causing a huge workload for my gut. I never tried baby cutlery, but by far the biggest and most effective tool I used in losing weight and in keeping it off unfilled are small dishes and plates. I have an array of them and they make portion control easy to do without weighing and measuring. For example, I buy yogurt in big tubs, because I'm feeding a family and we all eat it, but in days gone by the tub would be gone in a day. Now we serve into teeny little bowls that hold about 200 grams - the amount in an individual tub of yogurt. I find as long as I stick to 3 meals a day of proper portions, I can eat absolutely ANYTHING I fancy, and usually even a little bit of desseert, without worry about weight gain at all, so much so that I have no plans to refill my band at all.
  13. Where is the family forum? I wish we had one.. Ok here goes. About once a month the entire family has a family gathering. The kids go swimming, play with one another, and of course there is a lot of food. In fact I think the day is centered around grazing all day long and drinking beer/wine. I don't drink beer or wine so I am good there, however, I do not want to be around all that food. The truth is that I love food and the company I have around food. Call me an addict, call me a foodie it doesn't matter. The point is I find it difficult to be around all the food and not sample it. I was the only large one in the family so the rest never had the same issues I had with grazing and weight gain. The smells are enticing and even though I am not hungry.... I still want to sample/snack (head hunger). How can I attend this gathering and not be bothered by the food at 2 weeks post op? I am seriously thinking about not going but I was given some nasty looks by family. Only 1 knows I had the surgery and the others think I had surgery for a hernia (wanted to avoid judgement). Any help is appreciated.
  14. Okay so I have blue shield and my insurance is requiring the 6 months of monitored nutritional visits. This Friday will be my third visit. At my first visit I weighed in at 271, my second visit I weighed 264. Since my last visit I've gained about 4 lbs. So my question is...will I not be approved for surgery if my weight fluctuates during the 6 months? Throughout the month my weight usually goes up and down a few lbs and i'm scared they won't give me surgery because of it. Anyone know how that works ?

    Weight Loss Question

    For me the losing is sorta based on momentum. I was on a pretty good pace going into the surgery.....and was amazed at the amount of weight gain that occurred during the hospital stay.....it flushed out quickly and things really amped up in the weeks ahead. I'm guessing that it'll take you a couple weeks and things will kick into gear for you, too.
  16. So, the first thing I'm going to say is very "tough love." If you aren't losing weight, that means you are probably eating too much and/or not exercising enough. Remember that as you lose weight, you require even less "fuel" to keep your smaller body going. That said, there are also other things that might be going on. 1. Weight gain can be the only/first sign of band slippage. You should talk to your doctor about that possibility. He/she can order a simple chest x-ray to check the angle of the band, 2. Have you had your thyroid hormone levels checked? 3. Your doctor might have other recommendations. You should definitely check with him/her. Do you need another fill? Do you need to spend more time with a dietitian or counselor? Best of luck!

    Depo Shot And Lapband

    I worked for an gynecologist for a few years, and I learned that Depo is notorious for causing weight gain, the average being about 30 lbs. Most of the doctors in the practice would only consider it for women who had low normal BMIs. I would try to find another option if you can; you don't want to be behind the 8 ball before you're even banded.

    I wish I could answer your question. I actually have the same question. Depo provera has been the most effective and convenient form of birth control for me over the last 10-12 years. It's also be been a part of my 50 lb weight gain over that period. Of course the larger part of my weight gain was due to my unhealthy eating habits and inactivity. My banding isn't until April 2012, but I would somewhere down the line like to consider going back on it. I know that I have to get my lifestyle (food and activity) under much better control first.
  19. My name is Sharon and my surgery is in two weeks. I had a very easy insurance approval process and extensive pre-op testing. I was never over weight until the past five years and in that time I was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, hypertension, liver disease, gout, etc. My weight increased over 100 pounds in five years. I am excited to continue this journey and get back to being able to recognize my self when I look in the mirror. I want to do the things I did before the illnesses and weight gain, like walking, playing basketball, playing with my little ones, walking my dogs.......I am going to need encouragement and support from people that understand what I am going thru, that is wy I sought out a forum to join. I hope to eventually be able to pay it forward and help someone else!

    Alcohol

    So I know some will come in here and say "no, stay away!" But I'm not one of them. I'm a traveling salesman and I had my first cocktail about a month post op. Empty calories? Yeah, but we all know that. Stay away from beer, gas pain will hurt and it's like drinking liquid bread. I haven't had wine...but I stick to 3 cocktails since I entertain clients often (and the 4th meal drunken eating has completely stopped for me). Whisky Sours, Long Island's without the coke (tastes like lemonade), and hurricanes are my chosen poisons. Let's be honest though, alcohol can be a slippery slope (transfer addiction). As with everything post-op, moderation is key...if you let history repeat itself and alcohol contributed to your weight gain then the surgery was all for nothing. If that's not an issue...cheers!
  21. Sorry it took me so long to get back on here. Where in Cali are you originally from?? It is definatley something to get used to being all the way over here. I am from Sacramento, and miss my home too. But if i never came here, then i might have never known about the surgery. Wow, thank you for telling me about being denied for surgery if you gain even one pound on the supervised diet. I think thats crazy but understand. Have you lost any weight on your diet yet? and if so, how much. I was just trying to compare progress, even though i have pretty much made NONE!! lol But at the group meetings, they don't talk about weight gain during the program. I would have never known until i came upon this site. Well i hope you have a great Thanksgiving!!!!!
  22. I am officially in the 2-teens! Goodbye 220s! I won't miss you. I haven't been below 220 since junior high, or at least freshman in high school. I can't be too sure though because I never weighed myself. I'm basically going off of clothes that I've saved and how they fit, even though I've grown several inches since then so naturally my BMI is going to change. I tried on clothes I've been saving since before my rapid weight gain, and some fit and some were too big! I don't need to shop for bottoms now because I've dug out 3 pairs of shorts, 4 pairs of capris, and 2 pairs of pants. All I need now are shirts that don't look like tents on me, lol. Even at my heaviest, I had pretty good blood pressure. It averaged about 110-115 over 70-75. In an earlier post of mine, I was worried that my bp seemed to be higher than it used to be, even though I've lost 70 pounds since my highest weight. Donated blood today and my bp read 100 over 70! I used to have dimples on my lower back, one on either side of my spine, and they have returned! Before, my fat "filled them up" and now they're back. I can now see a slight indentation above my collarbone. If I shrug my shoulders, I can see my collarbone clearly! I work in a movie theater and one of my jobs requires me to go up and down stairs all day. I don't get out of breath anymore. My ticker starts the day of surgery, but from my highest I am halfway to goal! 70 pounds down, 70 to go!

    Weight gain

    I need some instruction. I had my vsg in March, 2009. I have gained some weight and I am worried. I am a stress eater and I have had my mother for the past 2-1/2 years and she was/i on hospice for the past year and a half. No excuse, just find comfort in food. NOW, I want/have to get back in line. Can you give me some advice on how to shrink my pouch back to what it needs to be? Liquid diet for a few days? Thank you so much for any advice you can give me.

But sadly, your situation does not look good for a long healthy band life, here is your problem, you went passed the green zone, and staying in the red zone (too tight) for too long and I am sure you did not care because you were happy with your great weight loss. You lost your weight the wrong way, and when you lose the wrong way with the band you will pay for it. The lap band has a VERY HIGH complication rate for this very reason, (lap band abuse) this is why many surgeons are moving away from the lap band because so many people abuse, get too tight and never follow up until their bands has slipped so bad it must be removed. And of course many patients are not going to be honest with the surgeon about being too tight and using the band as a bulimic tool, many surgeons are just seeing all these horrible long term complications of problems with the esophagus and other issues and are moving away from the band to the Sleeve for this VERY REASON. This is one reason the manufacturer wants to sell it, people in the US abuse it too much, they can't be trusted with being HONEST of how tight their bands are, surgeons have NO CLUE of how tight your band is, they rely on the patient to be honest of how tight their bands are, you are suppose to let the surgeon know anytime you have frequent vomiting and can't keep solids down. Has your band slipped? We don't know, we are not qualified to answer this question, but based on living with the band 8 years and seen others go through the same thing, it SOUNDS like your band has slipped, either pouch dilation. You can actually live with an untreated band slip for a few years, but eventually the band will slip so band and cause horrible reflux and vomiting daily so bad and it cause maladaptive eating problems meaning you will eventually not be able to keep any food or keep liquids down. The reason you are a bit concerned now that you still have "some restriction" even though you've had a few unfills, reason is your band has probably started to slip from being too tight and vomiting daily and when the band starts to slip it gets tighter and tighter, and you have to constantly get unfills until you get all the saline removed. As you can see you can't depend on the band to do all the work, and keep it too tight to stop you from eating, you lost your weight wrong and sadly it will not stay off unless you conjure up some willpower and start using your band as a tool instead of a crutch and eat healthy and exercise. It may be too late to save your band, only your surgeon can tell you what your future with your band will be, but you really need to get in and see your surgeon ASAP where they can check the position of the band and pouch size, and sometimes Upper Gi's don't tell the whole story, sometimes you need a EGD (endoscopy) to access the damage to your esophagus or pouch. If you are not having many problems now since you've gotten some saline removed, does not mean your band is Ok, Also, If you don't have money or insurance now, the best thing you can do is stop the vomiting, watch your portions before you end up having to have emergency band removal, yes it can eventually get that bad. The only concern now is having tight restriction even though you've removed saline, some people have to continue removing saline until the band is totally empty and still have issues and when there is no where to go the band must be removed if you have horrible reflux and un-wanted vomiting on an empty band, and then you can aspirate food into your lungs, I hate to scare you but want to prepare you for what I've seen so many go through with their bands. Also while you are not having many problems for NOW, it would be a good to start looking for a new job that will offer you some insurance because sooner or later you will probably develop reflux to the point you will not be able to sleep and band damage causes regurgitation of vomiting in your sleep, it can get ugly. I am sending you a cyber hug and giving you tough love and sending you warm vibes, and I really hope your band will be ok, and you learn from this, sometimes you need outside help like counseling and seek a therapist to help cope with your eating and why you eat, you can't use the band as a coping mechanism, that's not its job, although the band is the SAFEST of all the weight loss surgeries, it can get very dangerous and do harm if we don't use it wisely and responsibility. While I feel that much of what you wrote made excellent points, there were a few things however that I felt were a bit presumptuous. I definitely can take constructive criticism (even though sometimes we don't want to hear it), but I do feel there were some things that were a bit off. I included what you originally wrote in blue because that is what I am responding to, not the edited version that is posted now. Yes, there have been points where it can be considered that I have abused my band. Not because I wanted to or even felt that this would help with weight loss. To be clear, I feel that during the times I was regurgitating food was also the time when I gained weight. This was counterproductive for my weight loss goals. The reason I did not get unfills/fills and tweak more often was because I could not afford to do so. My goal has always been to find a healthy productive way the band will work for me without throwing up. You stated...You lost your weight the wrong way, and when you lose the wrong way with the band you will pay for it. I can't help but feel slightly offended by this statement. The first few sentences of my post stated that I did very well initially, lost 75 pounds in the first 8 months and maintained that weight loss for well over a year. Then my post goes on to state that eventually I began having problems. I worked extremely hard to lose that weight and for you to discredit me of that achievement is completely unfair. I have had the band for 30 months and began having problems in the last ten months or so. You also stated...But sadly, your situation does not look good for a long healthy band life, here is your problem, you went passed the green zone, and staying in the red zone (too tight) for too long and I am sure you did not care because you were happy with your great weight loss. - and - And of course many patients are not going to be honest with the surgeon about being too tight and using the band as a bulimic tool - and - As you can see you can't depend on the band to do all the work, and keep it too tight to stop you from eating, you lost your weight wrong and sadly it will not stay off unless you conjure up some willpower and start using your band as a tool instead of a crutch and eat healthy and exercise. Again, I can't help but feel that you are making assessments of me that are simply untrue. I absolutely do care and that is why I have been back for an unfill and have been trying over the past ten months to find a middle ground. I would have loved to been able to tweak my fills more often, but because I cannot afford the charges, I was left in an undesirable predicament. If I took out too much, I was able to eat pretty much anything...too little and I couldn't eat at all. Yes, willpower plays a big part in this...I agree. And, I probably used my statement referring to having no willpower loosely. To clarify, when I first had my lapband, I had very good willpower. I measured all of my food and made the right choices. After I began having issues and could not readily afford to keep meeting with my doctor, I did go for "junkier" types of food because these were the things I was able to hold down and quite frankly, I was hungry. Of course, this type of eating puts you back into bad habits. I attribute this to my weight gain of 18 pounds. I was not using the lap band as a bulimic tool or crutch. I was trying to find a happy medium and unfortunately without insurance, this was a difficult task. In my opinion, the lapband should provide a healthy level of restriction so that it can be used as a tool and that was merely what I am searching for. I never said I had tight restriction now. I am at a point where I am able to eat a modest, healthy meal and feel satisfied. Now that I have had some Fluid taken back out and am able to eat healthier foods, those are the things that I have been going for. But, let's get real honest....if we all had amazing willpower to begin with, we probably would have never needed a lap band. You go on to say...Also while you are not having many problems for NOW, it would be a good to start looking for a new job that will offer you some insurance because sooner or later you will probably develop reflux to the point you will not be able to sleep and band damage causes regurgitation of vomiting in your sleep, it can get ugly. I am sending you a cyber hug and giving you tough love and sending you warm vibes, and I really hope your band will be ok, and you learn from this, sometimes you need outside help like counseling and seek a therapist to help cope with your eating and why you eat, you can't use the band as a coping mechanism, that's not its job, although the band is the SAFEST of all the weight loss surgeries, it can get very dangerous and do harm if we don't use it wisely and responsibility. Considering you do not know anything about my home situation, to suggest I look for a new job comes across a bit condescending. I currently have to stay home to take care of a disabled husband and small child. If I worked a full time job and had to hire someone to do this, it would cost me more than I would make. So I work part time when family is able to help me with my husband and child --- being i need such a flexible schedule - the part time jobs I am able to work do not offer benefits. I would love to get counseling to work through these lifelong eating issues, but therapy costs money. I do thank you for being informative and I really do appreciate a lot of the points you made. And although I feel your response to my post came from a good place and was well intentioned, I do feel you were a bit quick to make some harsh accusations about me personally without enough background. I just wish you would have asked me for a little more information before you rushed to judgment. I know that you have edited your initial post and your second one may not seem as harsh, but it is hard for me to "unsee" what I already have read. Jay

    Self control

    Get back on the horse. You can do it. If you are anything like me, half that weight gained is Water weight and will come right off.
