    Long time, no fill

Hello guys. Been a while since I have been on and almost as long since I've been hitting the weight loss road. I was banded back in Oct of 2007. Between the loss pre- and post op I lost around 85 pounds. Had 3 fills and was doing very well. Then all kinds of hell broke loose. In hospital with dehydration and stomach bug, blood clot, car wreck, job loss, father dying, house foreclosure. All in about a 6 month time frame. It sucked. I didn't want to go back in for a fill because the amount of stress along with my band gave me PLENTY of restriction. We ended up moving to a small town 2 hours from my doc. No fills anywhere near where I live. I've also been working two full time jobs (~100 hours/wk) for going on 18 months now. Unfortunately both jobs are fairly sedentary so I've managed to put back around 40 pounds. No problems with the the band during that time. So yes. I'm now backslid and un-filled since Feb of 08. I want to get started back now. I've gone back on liquids for the past week to shrink up any pouch expansion (pretty sure most of my weight gain was to eating around the band...I still have some restriction but have consistently chewed really well, but didn't obey the no-drinking rule). I'm embarrassed that I have let things go so long. I am hesitant to go back to my doc but I know I need to get restriction going again if I'm going to be successful. I dread going back. Do any of you have similar experiences? I'm not concerned about being successful--I know that with restriction I can be. Is there anything else I should be doing before going back to my doc? Thanks for listening. Wish me luck (and a few prayers if you have any to spare!) Ben
  2. Hey hope everyone is having a great day ! I want to come on here and just get some honest help and advice hopefully . To give you a brief summary about me , I do suffer from obesity and have a major weight problem. I can safely say that a majority of my weight gain has been within a period of 2 years. From the age of 18 - 20 years old I have managed to put on a whopping 80 pounds . May of 2018 I weighed in at 305 pounds and since then have lost around 17 pounds which puts me at 286. I have struggled with gaining a mass amount and loosing for a while. This time I feel like it has been a tougher time for me because I actually hit 300 pounds and that was a weight I told myself I would never reach. I do not suffer from binge eating disorder because I never sit and just eat a mass amount of food . I believe I make poor decisions on what I eat overall. Looking back at how I ate food , I could have easily been consuming 4,000 calories a day . Now I consume 1,700 -2,000 calories a day which keeps me satisfied . I do light exercise and occasionally go to the gym during the week. ( no set plan , just come and go when i have time). I have been following this for about 2 months now . I have tried many ways to loose weight such as weight watchers , hiring a personal trainer and counting calories. Through my attempts I always fail to loose the weight necessary and become highly discouraged. The struggle with my morbid obesity has been very tough for me . My whole life I have been over weight , but now that im a young adult Its become a huge burden to my body and social life. I have spoken to my doctor about my concerns regarding my obesity and we have done blood tests which all came back fine. He did mention if I was interested in doing weight loss surgery to help with my obesity and that is something I have been considering for almost a year alone. Medically I believe I qualify , due to my BMI of 42.5 and having asthma along with it. I want to see a nutritionist and bariatric doctor so I can be consulted and exhaust all my other options before I truely do the surgery ( if i get approved). Overall Im just tired of gaining so much weight after I loose a small amount. My life has been dramatically affected and want a change.

    Terrified of change

Many people experience a fear of failure when it comes to weight loss. This is cemented into their minds by the failures they experienced by years of "yo-yo" dieting. RNY gastric bypass surgery is a whole different experience. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. I found that it was not hard to lose weight when hunger was not constantly and incessantly gnawing at my bones. Back to your problem, weight gain during the pre-op stage. Here are some recommendations: Begin attending Bariatric Surgery Support Group meetings. They are generally free. Walk 30 minutes every day. Give up all carbonated beverages. I lost 20 pounds on giving up my 6 diet Coke a day habit pre-op alone. Read the calorie labels of everything you consume, especially at fast food restaurants and try and pick low calorie foods. I use to love milk shakes at "Steak and Shake" but after reading the number of calories in a milkshake, I gave that up for life. On the other hand a crunchy taco at Taco Bell isn't bad nor a bowl of chili at Wendy's.
  4. Heather, ick, I'm sorry! I hate vomiting. Are you sure it's not morning or pregnancy related sickness babe? My band has been tight and picky lately. Not so tight I can't eat, but I'll take a few bites, feel the chest pain, belly tightness and have to stop or slow down. I have had lots of gas ever since banding and now that I'm preg I don't tend to take my Gas X since it's not safe to use. In pre-preg days, I found that being in a back-leaning position and taking gas meds really helped a tight band. If I took bites that weren't going down, I would lean or recline back for a few min and swallow a pill, 10 min later I could usually eat fine. This also helped to eat certain "no no" foods like Pasta and chewy breads. Lately the pregnancy and gas bloat are back. I often have a jacket or sweater with me in the restaurant so I can casually have my pants unbuttoned and lay the jacket across my tummy so nobody can tell. I gained 8 or 9 lbs the first few weeks of pregnancy, and only now the hunger has slowed a bit and my appetite is getting to a more manageable level, so I'm ok with the band tightness. I'm hoping to get thru the next 6 or 7 months without an unfill so that I have at least SOME control and don't go weight gain crazy.
  5. I had surgery on Dec 26, 2017. I’ve lost only 21lbs since surgery, and 34 total. I got down to 173 and stayed there for a whole week, so I think it wasn’t scale error. But now I’m at 179 and have stayed here for over a week, so it can’t just be water weight. I went up 6 lbs literally over night, not gradually. This is worse than a plateau!! I’m less than two months out. Could my weight loss be over? I stay under 1,200 caps and over 65 protein a day. I don’t drink as much water as I should, but I’ve increased water a lot from pre-surgery. I try to keep carbs under 50 a day. I work out for an hour five times per week and definitely feel stronger. I know muscle weighs more than fat, but from what I’ve read on line, one can only gain 0.5-1 lb of muscle per week, so I have a hard time believing a six lb weight gain is all muscle. What is going on???? PS. 1200 Cals May sound high, but with my work outs, and the fact that I rarely eat 1,200 and am usually around 1,000, I don’t think the calories can be to blame.

Phase one...what was your turning point?

i am very excited about this path i am on to better myself by improving my health. even the preparation phase has been a great experience. the psychological evaluation probably was the most enlightening. it revealed that i am 'above average in intelligence' but quite dysfunctional in my relationships with men.:sneaky: this coupled with disappointments, loss, unplanned changes, and a desire to shut off myself from the world lead to ballooning of 100 pound weight gain over a period of six years!! The trip part about all of this is that i didn't see it piling on. talking about denial. i finally saw it staring in my face when i was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. i realized that i could die in my sleep from the underlying factor of being too fat... for the first time in my life i was scared. this was my turning point. i knew i needed to do something but whatever i needed to do i knew i could not l do it on my own. i did what i always do when i am afraid, or uncertain...i prayed. believe it or not, my two-fold miracle began when i found this page and then found a group of people at a center called true results who lead me each step of the way. so now i am almost at the finish mark for completing all my required testing. tomorrow i will have my nutritional consult which is the final visit. then i'll wait to hear from the insurance company. it's been a long four months... so tell me what was your turning point and where are you in the phase one process:rolleyes2:?
  7. Hello all...been a while since I've been on here. My wife had her band put in during April of 2008. My wife has been having some issues with weight gain/pain for the last few months. Today an ECG showed that her Lap-Band has completely eroded through her stomach. She was told by the GI doctor that she would have to have it taken out, let her stomach heal, and then, if she wants another, put another band in. We called the Dr's office that did the band, told them the results and they scheduled an appointment for next monday. Anybody ever have this happen to them???

    Teenagers Getting Wks?

I guess it would depend on the teen. I know we have some teen on here that have done very well. My thoughts are along the line with Kadeez..... i would think LB would be better. I'm not incline to agree with the "emotional eating" part. I think kids are over weight because of the stuff they eat not why they eat. McDonald's, burger king.... fast foods. I know that's what contributed to my weight gain. Teens these days are very much on the go.... and they eat tons of fast food. I say, if they go thru all the prerequisites and they have extensive education ..... they why not. Why go thru life Fat if they don't have too....
  10. Hi all, So, I was just discharged from Hospital yesterday. I had yet another bout of my D.R.E.S.S syndrome. (I had two episodes back-to-back) When I have these flare-ups, I have to go on high doses of IV corticosteroids called Methylprednisolone. Well, the last flare up I had (in the middle of Oct) they gave me the IV and then my treatment was done. Well, I flared up again within 5 days. So this time they did the IV steroids and now they are doing a long tapering down dose of oral Prednisone to see if this extra treatment will nip these flare ups in the bud. (like over 3 months) I am now also on a different corticosteroid/immunosuppressant called Cyclosporine and apparently going to be on it for a year. *whimper *whimper With being on steroids there are A LOT of side effects. Guess which one I'm most petrified of..? WEIGHT GAIN! -it might not be literally weight (or fat) gain but it could be Water weight. -my appetite may increase -my weight can redistribute -I may feel extreme exhaustion all of the time -I may feel jittery and shaky -I may be forever irritable -I may be severely out of breath even with a mild walk -I may have insomnia ** the reason I say I may have these particular symptoms is because I did have them the last time the doctor had me on this tapering dose of the steroids. The difference back then was that I didn't have the WLS, and I DID gain actual weight because I ate a sh*t ton more than usual, wasn't watching it closely and didn't even think about exercising at all. I'm devastated to be back on these steroids and I feel like I am going to be putting my weight loss on hold for at least the 3 months. I weighed myself this morning and I am still up 4 pounds from last week. Even in hospital I ate the best I could, ate my Protein, drank my water, and walked around as best I could. Came home yesterday and the first thing I did was went out for a trail walk. Am I going to be stuck for at least 3 months? WAHHHH To make a LONG story short; I am looking for other people to tell me that they beat the odds and lost weight while on this nasty medication. Please tell me that I am not going to work my ass off, struggle as all heck, but not get anywhere! Has anyone been on Prednisone and lost weight anyways? I know it'll increase my appetite but I will ignore hunger and still eat what I'm supposed to eat. I know I will most likely experience water weight too, but I will do my absolute very best to beat the side effects of Prednisone. I guess I need a little bit of hope that I might actually win this battle.... Heather

    Weight gain

Just need to post this for some help and encouragement. I had my sleeve Dec 2015 and lost about 80 lbs. I felt good and only wanted to lose another 20 or so pounds. These past few months I took on a new position at work and have moved so weight loss was not really at the forefront. I still feel good restriction the problem is I noticed I snack a lot more even from before surgery. I knew it was bad and getting out of hand but just got off the scale and I'm actually up 10 lb. I know this isn't the end of the world but of course I start feeling like I ruined my sleeve. I have a plan to start fresh again tomorrow maybe even try the 5-day reset. Just looking for others who may have gone through this and bounce back or anything you can help me with. I know what I'm doing wrong and I know what I need to change. I keep telling myself I have lost 75 lb even before surgery with Weight Watchers so now I have to think I am just a normal person that needs to lose weight. For some reason I keep getting scared that it is going to be harder because of the surgery which doesn't really make sense but I guess I'm freaking out a little bit. I guess the feeling of the honeymoon being over just has me really upset right now that I didn't take full advantage and may have ruined it. Thanks! Im 8 Months Pregnant!anyone Else?

25 lbs is a healthy weight gain. You'll lose like 10 right away at delivery, with the baby/placenta/amniotic fluid. The massive uterus (which went from the size of a small orange to bigger than a large watermelon) and the breast engorgement make up another good 5-7 lbs, so you can expect to drop that weight in the first month or so, at least as far as the uterine shrinkage is concerned. So most of this weight has nothing to do with fat. I think you'll be able to lose the odd 5 or so lbs of fat you gained by breastfeeding and using your sleeve to your advantage.
  13. remember a baby is between 7-8 pounds and there is a large placenta and lots of fluid. 25 pounds seems like a very healthy weight gain! Congrats!

    NuvaRing?

I haven't had the sleeve yet, but I am on my second Mirena. LOVE it! Didn't really notice much weight gain from that.

    NuvaRing?

I have been using Nuva Ring for 7 years. I didn't notice any weight gain when I started and over the years I don't think it's contributed much to my weight gain, mostly that's been caused by eating too much. You're most likely going to have to try a few different kinds to see what works best for you, we all have a different reaction. This works best for me since I can't seem to remember to take a pill everyday. I also tried the patch before the ring but it was always ripping off the top layer of skin every month when I changed it out. Another benefit of the ring is very minimal bleeding, sometimes I don't even get my period before I start the next ring.

    NuvaRing?

I've been using the NuvaRing for years and I love it. Never noticed any weight gain. I do love that its made my flow VERY light and only a few days(usually less than 4). Total bonus for me. Talk to your Lady Dr. about all your options, but I love it.
  17. I'm sure it's a combination of things, her own personal issues at home. She probably really wants to be supportive but feels awkward about her own weight gain. I think you need to have a heart to heart so it doesn't have more of an affect on your friendship. I had to tell someone, if you can't be supportive then just keep your mouth shut, she may be doing that(?)

    17 Months Out Progress

Everyone is different, so I can only speak from my experiences, but many of the fears, rumors, advice has turned out to be far, far off base. I am not promoting or endorsing any of my particular choices for others, but I've found that I can still have anything and everything I like to eat and drink and more. I rarely exercise, I can drink any form of alcohol I like, with no difference in tolerance from pre surgery. No special gear, eating utensils, measuring devices, apps, fitness gear is necessary. If anyone is told they need any of those things by other post vsg individuals, they really don't (unless it is the advice of a surgeon/doctor). But, hey ...if it works for you or makes you feel better, by all means go for it. Weight goes up and down. Stalls happen. Weight gain happens. Its not hard to get back on track. Paying close attention to what my body is telling me is one of the big differences for me. hair falls out, hair grows back. With a large weight loss at an older age, there is extra skin that I may or may not address at a later time. My latest lesson is that there are extremely unpleasant consequences to missing B12 supplements for very long: shaking, numb hands and fingers bruises weakness breathlessness extreme...very extreme, joint pain debilitating back pain Sometimes I'm not hungry and don't eat all day. Other days I eat constantly.
  19. Hello All: I just returned from my pre op appointment with my surgeon. I wanted to share with you the questions I asked and the answers I received. Q. Can I take my capsule (Cymbalta) medication after surgery? A. Yes, do not stop taking it, but open the capsule pour the contains in something to get it down. Q. I am allergic to vicodin and codeine. What can I take after surgery when I get home? A. You will be prescribed something nice and strong, but it will be in pill form and need to be crushed up before taking it. Q. What is the deal-o with "gas" after surgery? Is that due to the surgeon's technique or specific to the patient? A. All the gas pumped into you during the surgery is removed while you are asleep. There are three types of pain, 1. incision pain 2. irratation from the gas 3. ..... oh heck I forgot lol if you did well with your gallbladder surgery, you should breeze through this no problem. Q. Do you make everyone's tummy the same size or is it based on the patient's orginal tummy size? A. The stomach size is a constant, determined by the tube used as a "pattern" to guide the cutting. The only variable that is not controllable is the length of a persons stomach. Q. Is there anything you might find during surgery that would cause me to wake up without being sleeved? A. 1 in a million chance that there would be anything that would be found during surgery that was not identified during the pre op testing. He has never had a surgery that ended in no sleeve. Q. Straws? What is the theory behind straws? A. The straw mystery is a myth. However you can get your liquids down is fine by him. Q. Weight gain from/after surgery? A. Yes there will be some bloating and Water retention. Don't bother weighing yourself for a week. Q. I had to out right ask... do you... or are you going to do a nicotine test? A. No. "Should I?" lol I think those were my primary questions as I can remember them. Most of my questions I was able to find answers on the internet or VST. My surgery is a go for October 22nd. I officially clocked in today at the doctor's -15#'s. I start my pre-op diet on the 9th. And I am super excited and very ready to get this party started. Thanks for reading. Bonnie

    Super bummed

Im 2.5 months out and weighed myself this morning and the scale was up 3 pounds. It's nothing to worry about. I eat 600-700 calories a day and know it's not really weight gain, it's just being human--and a woman. I'll lose two or three days in a row, stall for a few days, sometimes go up, even, and by the end of the week I'm back to my loss weight. Then, on the eighth day I'll have a two or three pound loss again. It can get frustrating and this is why they say only weigh yourself once a month, but I'm a scale addict.

Girls: Depo Provera and the Lapband

Well I had major side effects I gained 100lbs in 9 months with Depo that is what started my weight gain for me and I have never been able to loose more that 50-60lbs since. I am praying that with lapband I will get below 200 agian! The other problem is that my Blood pressure shot out of control and since depo have not been able to use any other birth conrol because my BP shoots up. I had been on BC for 5 years before depo an never had a problem. I think people on Depo should really read the research and see all the problems it has caused for many people!

    Weight Gain

My first week and a half was amazing I saw almost 2-3 pounds a day and lost over 20 pounds and then it just stopped. Week 3 and now week 4 I have not lost a single pound and I noticed that I have gained 3 pounds and I feel like it is mostly my fault. I don't drink enough water because I am not thirsty and I am eating soft solids now and I don't eat enough I think or I could be eating the wrong foods. I am just feeling defeated. My support from the surgeons office tells me its probably my body going into starvation mode and possibly constipated. I just feel alone and it is making me depressed. I don't binge eat but during Thanksgiving I went crazy on the stuffing I might have eaten that stuff in bits throughout the day I really wanted to feel normal for a day but now full regret since I saw the scale go up one pound. Is there anyway feeling the same way or has been there and was able to overcome it?

    Before my weight gain

    From the album: Transition

  24. I was banded with plication on 7-26-11. While I was on all liquids I lost about 32 lbs. SInce I have been back on solid foods I feel like I have gained a few pounds back. I have not had my first fill yet so I am still a bit optimistic... but I expected more from the plication I guess. They claim that my stomach has been reduced by 70% and I would say that is accurate because I am only able to eat about 30% of what I did before. However, that 30% still seems to be enough to not allow weight loss and even allow a bit of weight gain. The doc said I should feel restriction from the swelling around the band site for 3-4 weeks, however, after about 10 days I felt no restriction what so ever in the band area. Has anyone else gained a bit of weight after transistioning to solid foods before first fill?!

    How much did you gain??

Hey ladies, I'm 13 weeks pregnant and thankfully haven't gained anything but instead I have gained a umbilical hernia which totally sucks. Hopefully my weight gain will continue at a minimum. I know wishful thinking. Good luck everyone.
