    Hi I'm new

Hi I have been reading post last night and today and just now registered. I have not had any surgery yet I went in earlier this month to my Endocrine Doctor and a Gastrointeroligist and My Endocrine doctor said that Weight Loss Surgery might be the thing to help in dealing with my Diabetes. At first I was skeptical and afraid to do it. But reading on here and other websites and just learning what the whole process will be like. But I do still have questions like I love water can I still drink alot of it and how much can I drink of it I do know I can not drink anything while eating and thats okay but can I drink a sip If I need to get the food down. I also have all my teeth taken out and the dentures I have are not good at all and I do need new ones but I heard I have to really chew and chew foods when I get to the soft food stages and beyond. I also have diabetes like I said do others on the board that have diabetes shown any improvement. I am now on 2 types of insulin and take 4-5 shots of 100 units for Levimer and 30 units if Novilin R plus I am on meds of High Blood Pressure, Hypothyroidism and Diabetes Insipidus I also have Sleep Apenea and High Colestrial and yes I'm only 25 years old on April 1st Yay! I have times of uncontrollable craving and urges to eat and if I don't it makes me very mad and unhappy. And If I do eat I eat alot I go out of my way to get the food I want and I sneak foods that I know I should not have from other people. I am at my highest weight of 325 I have been up and down a bit in weight but usually it just goes up. I have been on a few diets but I can't seem to stick with them because of my cravings and I know I can improve with exercise I am very tired all the time and mostly stay on my computer all the time. I do have 2 dogs and I have resolved to walk them more and I found a nice water areboic class nearby that If I can convince my dad to buy a 3 or 6 month membership so he can us the weights at the gym I can do the Water Arebics and walk on their track and use the weight and cargo machines. I'm am on government assistance and I don't have a job right now so money is tight. I hope I can get Insurance to cover the surgery and If not I don't' know what to do If I don't get it. I hope with my weight record and medical records and that fact im so young and have all these medical problems that my insurance which is Access Plus PA Assistance will cover me. Any info and advice will be greatly appreciated. :-) I know this is a step in the right direction for me.

    Excess skin

Hi Brandi, The only thing I remember about tightening skin was from Weight Watchers that drinking skim milk would keep skin from getting flabby...hope that helps. Betty

    Help My Daughter

I was banded 10years ago and lost all my weight. Generally I found if I followed a healthy eating food plan, kept a food journal, exercised... I did well. I would “fall off the wagon” once in awhile... but then I’d get back on track. Any weight lost surgery is one of many tools we have to help us. They are not the total answer to weight loss. This is key and one reason I think some people fail to lose the weight they want to lose is they rely mainly on the surgery. There is a lot of maintenance with the lapband. Ie. Fills that work one time are too much/too little other times. Also sometimes exercise, flying and other random times the band would be affected. But I was Ok with it....until about 4 months ago. I had a really bad virus. It was the first time I️ threw up from illness in 10 years. All of a sudden I couldn’t sleep at night with a lot of reflux, I couldn’t eat many times, etc. I went 2 weeks ago and I have a serious slip. I’m getting the band out Friday. I can’t switch to another surgery until my body heals a bit. I was a big cheerleader for the lapband. And it really served me well. The one thing i really like about it, after it’s taken out it’s as if there wasn’t an operation because the body hasn’t been surgically changed But medical advances give us more choices nowadays. I am going to try to go without any replacement surgery doing everything I’ve done to lose the weight. If it doesn’t work, down the road I will do the sleeve. (Discussed with my doctor as my best option) Your doctor will recommend what’s best for you based on weight to lose, lifestyle etc. And you decide after your research what you think is best I wouldn’t recommend the lapband to my friends based on the other options.

Banded a month ago in Mexico

Hello, I had my lap band surgery in Mexicali also. My surgeon was Alberto Aceves. The care in Mexicali also exceeded my expectations. I stopped loosing at about 2 weeks post op too. You will begin loosing again but it is not uncommon to stop loosing at this point. My surgery was 4/17/09 and I have lost 48 pounds. Make sure you are drinking enough Water and eating around 65 grams of Protein daily. I got my first fill at 6 weeks in Mexicali. After my fill I began loosing again. Be sure to exercise at least 30 minutes each day too. You may need to increase your calorie intake just a little. I began to loose once I increased to 1200 calories. Remember, the lap band is only a tool that will help you to eat less during dieting. It is not going to make you loose the weight. You will still have to eat less and move more to make the weight come off. Good luck to you.
  6. I have been on this site for about a week. So, I am not new new, just new. Well I thought I would do an about me sort of thing-to introduce myself properly. Here goes. I am Joan. I live in a southern suburb of Chicago, Illinois. I am 32 years old, and I have three kids. I have a 1 year old baby girl, a 3 year old son, and a nine year old son. They are great, and I love being a mom to them. I am married to a neat guy, and have been for about 5 years. We have been friends since High School. I am a graduate student in Counseling, and am doing my internship now. About one year till I become a Therapist, treating individuals, couples, and families. Yea! I am getting my band on (hopefully) Thursday 2/10. The reason I am choosing this surgery is that like many of you...I have tried nearly everything else to no avail. I want to be able to live a more physically active life..and to be able to feel like I can go to the amusement park again and feel comfortable. My present weight is limiting my life, and I won't have that any more! So, that's me. Thanks, Joan
  7. I was diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 26 or so. Have had 3 major manic episodes, 2 of which landed me in the hospital. Escaped the hospital by the skin of my teeth the third time. I've had my ups and downs since then. Been doing great for about 3 years now, stable on meds. I too had to meet with a psychiatrist before surgery and was completely honest. She talked a lot about addiction transfer (I have other addictions besides food). I was successful loosing all my excess weight in about 10 months. 30 pounds has crept back on. I plan to loose 20 of it, I got just a little to thin, or so people tell me. As long as I loose enough to get back into my jeans I'll be happy.
  8. Hello! I would like to start this thread by assuring all readers that I love my band. I have been banded for 3 months now. Even if I never lost another pound, I understand things about food and eating that I never did before. For instance, what full feels like. Or, the joys of bringing home leftovers from a restaurant. Or, not feeling like I have to order the largest plate on the menu and eat multiple large helpings in order to feel satisfied. Actually, eating is now more enjoyable because I can savor it, rather than shovel it. With that being said, I have to admit that I'm quite an impatient person. I understand that I have an underlying desire for all things to happen immediately as I want them. In regards to the band, weight loss is feeling slow. So far, I've lost 25 pounds since day of surgery. I suppose in three months, I expected to be losing more. It would be my goal to lose 100 pounds by my first 'bandiversary'. Are there any veterans who can speak to what feels like a slow start? Do the first few months have a tendency to feel like a shit show? I know this sounds ridiculous, but how important is exercise in motivating results? I know people have lost plenty of weight without it, but is that really an effective approach? Can anyone speak to how they felt after their first 3 months or so. This is an interesting time in the life of a bander. It almost feels like being a toddler. I can say that my experience has been fantastic. Never have I experienced sickness, pain, or any other undesirable moments. I'm interested to know when veterans starting "seeing" results. And please, (kindly) feel free to tell me I'm being a little whiny, impatient banded toddler. It's confusing because who really knows what normal is? It is an entirely subjective situation. It's like going to the doctor and being asked if you have a "normal period." How the hell am I supposed to know if it's normal, I've had no other experience but my own! Thanks all!!!

    Got to love the band

Hi Mark, How are you? We met at the Cranbourne meet up but didn't really get the chance to talk. Las Vegas must be a pretty out there kind of place. Did you do much gambling? I am doing pretty well with my weight loss and am getting very close to the 100 kg mark now. I am going to celebrate when I am under it too.:clap2: Good on ya. Susannah
  10. Hi Guy,s Just got back from nearly 3 weeks of holidays. Hawaii, Los Angeles and Vegas it was fantastic. I ate like a pig and stuffed in as much as i could. When at dinner with friend i quietly went to the restrooms half time and had a purge then went back to the table and continued. No one was the wiser. When we returned home. (So glad to be home.) TOTAL WIEGHT GAINED , No, No , -0.5 of a kilo I couldnt believe the scales. I lost 1/2 a KG . Normally a holiday would be a gain of 5 or 10 kg. I,m a happy old soul. Mark.
  11. Do any ladies have PCOS & are losing weight just fine? Or do you have PCOS & the weight is coming off slowly? TIA
  12. Hi Hiya. Just wondering How rapid the weight loss was for you in the first cpl of weeks? I weighed myself on.Friday, 7 days post op and was thrilled with an 11lb loss, weighed myself again today , 11 days post op.. and I've lost Nothin since Friday. I'm a bit freaked out by that, was expecting a loss. I'm now thinking I'm gonna be one of those ppl who doesn't lose anything much after RNY. Feel like crying
  13. I'm 2 1/2 years post op and just hit 100 pounds of weight loss. It's been a long slow road but at least the scale has gone in the right direction. I still have 71 pounds to go. I'm wondering if anybody has some jumpstarting tips or even pearls of wisdom for me. I need to get some more of this weight off before I lose my mind. Thank you!

14 day pre op liquid diet

It is probably a sign that you are keeping well hydrated and when your body is ready to let the 'water weight' go it will do so! Also, don't get too preoccupied with the scales...that can frustrate you and take the enrgey that you need to focus on pre-op!! Power on!!

    anyone older out there?

HI, Thanks, I have found the 60's thread and have posted to it. How did you get that neat weight loss tracker on your posting? Congratulations on your 79 LBS!!!
  16. My name is Llyra and I had lap band surgery March 3. After a slow start my weight loss picked up and I am now 26 pounds lighter than I started out. I love the suggested question in the guide to introductions: "Have you been banded?" It makes me feel like a rare bird or endangered wild cat. I look forward to connecting with others who are on the road to recovery from life within a wall of flesh.

    Weight loss

I am one week post op and ive lost nothing... not a single thing! I would be dancing on the rooftops if i lost 15! 2 weeks is to premature to be worrying about the weight loss.... i was worried too... but we need to allow our bodies to heal and do what it needs to do. As long as we do the right thing... the weight will come off

  19. am i the only person who has not lost a ton of weight on the liquid diet? i've been following it to a T, and consuming less than 1000 calories a day, and have only lost 5.8 lbs in my first 10 days. i take synthroid for a thyroid issue and have PCOS, but assumed that with the liquids, i'd be seeing bigger losses. i am so afraid that the surgeon will think i've been cheating, or that my liver will be too large. what gives?

small loss on pre-op liquid diet?

I dont have the answers for you but I wanted to post anyway. I view this crappy preop thing (I am on day 8) as more of a mental change than physical. I know from the doctors perspective it is done to shrink your liver. But for me it is a detox of sorts from food. I have thyroid issues as well and that does make weight loss a challenge. However, I see your 5 pounds as 5 pounds that you dont have to loose later. I think 5 pounds is great and dont compare yourself with anyone else. This is your journey and you should be proud of how far you have come to this point.

    3Days!

Hi everyone my name is Tricia. I'm 34 and have 2 children. I started my weight loss journey in June at 244lbs. I am at 230 now. The hardest part for me was quitting smoking. But my surgery is this monday!
  23. I am 3 pounds from my goal weight. I still have 6 weeks to lose it before I see my surgeon, but I have been stuck for 2 weeks. What can I do. I can’t loose this opportunity.

    Weight down = feeling fat

Our bodies morph over time, with age, childbirth, etc. Funny, but I have found the opposite of your experience. I find myself looking thinner at my current weight than I did in my youth. I attribute that to lots of loose skin and what I call "dripping fat" that seems to pool in the loose skin, lol! One other thing - our skin and supporting structures take a while to bounce back. My neck was worse at 50 pounds lost (at around 2-3 months) than it is now at nearly 150 pounds lost at 18 months post op. Also, I haven't lost any significant weight since January, and people tell me all the time I look like I've lost more. A plastic surgeon also told me that after people have plastics, they continue to improve for 2-3 years. So, I'd say give it some time and things may shift and tighten.
