    Weight Loss questions

I had the lapband in 2008 when I was 380 pounds at my consultation. I was able to get down to 280 but had many complications and gained all my weight back and had to get it removed in 2012. I continued in a downward (or upward I should say) Spiral with my health and weight. I rapidly gained weight and in October of 2015 I decided I needed to make a change and fast when I was put in the hospital for breathing problems and they almost wouldn't do a catscan because I was over the weight limit when I told them I was 480 pounds (which is what I thought I was). I was so overweight doctors were having trouble treating me. I ended up having to go on oxygen 24/7 because I was so overweight it was pressing against my lungs and restricting my breathing. I called and made an appointment at the bariatric surgeon the day I got out of the hospital. When I went for the consultation it turns out I actually weighed 540 pounds. I went through 6 months of preop diet and was able to lose 60 pounds. The day of surgery on May 29, 2016 I weighed 480 pounds. Today, March 16, 2017, I weight 303.8 pounds. I got my life back. Before I could hardly walk the length of a room and now I walk 2 miles almost every day. I had a lot of complications after surgery but I would do this surgery again in a heartbeat even with all I went through. I had the sleeve surgery because I did not want the malabsorbtion or dumping syndrome. Good luck to you and if you have any other questions you can ask!

No weight loss 5 days posts op

You are not doing anything wrong, it's completely normal! They pumped your abdomen full of gas for the surgery and you most likely had an IV. It will take a little time for that to go away. And depending on your weight lost prior to surgery, your body could be holding onto all calories. Be patient, the scale will move! Best of luck to you!
  3. I had a lot of body and face work done last month in Mexico by Dr. Sauceda. He specialized in massive weight loss and has great rates. I was there, under his care for two weeks all inclusive. He has a group over on ObesityHelp dot com. There are a lot of us over there that recently had surgery. He will be in las Vegas in June doing consultations.
  4. Way to go!! My surgery was the same day. Keep up the amazing progress. I'll bet as you continue to lose your BP will go down, down, down, like your weight.

    Stalled at Week 3

Hey there, did you get to speak with the NUT or Dietitian? Maybe you need to keep track of the calorie intake making sure your putting in enough or vice averse. Find out how many calories you should be on. Sometimes its just your body holding on to the weight, it will start to come off when it realizes this is life now and let go, LOL be patient. Be sure to follow up with the NUT, also maybe your losing inches now that too sometimes comes off first.

    I Am Back!!

Vacation is over and i had a BLAST. But the house i rented was great except no internet. Not that i really missed it as i was to busy to be on much. We ran from daylight to Dark. I did 7 amusement parks as well as the beach WOw talk bout sore. But i rode every ride I wanted to but 2. One i wouldnt fit in the seat the other the line was way to long and i was way to tired to stand in another line. I had great family time and enjoyed everything. Figured i would have lost a ton of weight. I didnt eat alot and walked my buns off but hmmm didnt lose much. Oh well This thur is my preop then next wen is my dr appt then May 2 wow just 2 1/2 weeks is my surgery. I am so far behind on what has been happening here on the board. I only have 65 notifications to try to read... LOL

    wht should i do?????????

You are right! Just do it, one day at a time. Measure, weight, whatever you need. Speak to your Surgeon, maybe you need a fill. But all in all, you HAVE lost weight. EVERYONE is different and they loose at different rates. The weather turned cold and I had put off my walks. Now my butt sags down to my knees. So what do I need to do, JUST DO IT. Today, maybe I will by legwarmers to keep my knees warm and I am going to go out! Thank you for KICKING MY BUTT TOO!!!!!
  8. Thank you for all the posts. I have been doing more research on both types of surgeries pretty much all day today. I'm still completely torn and still don't know which surgery I will get. All along I have wanted the RNY because I thought it was a better choice for me personally (I think I might need the dumping syndrome to keep me in line), but what if I fall into the group of folks that the weight loss does not help the pain and/or swelling in joints and lower back? What if I suffer some other injury that causes me pain and Tylenol doesn't work? I will be talking with the doctor as soon as I can for some medical advice, but I wanted to say thanks to you for answering my post!

    April 2014 Due Date

Wow! very similar here!. I am 11 months post op, down 123 pounds and am 6w4d preggers due 4/18/14. I had gotten to 127 down, but weight started to creep up a little, but has been holding steady at 123 down for about 3 weeks, just after finding out. I have a 4 year old daughter. My surgeon said to wait to get pregnant until 9-12 months post op, and we weren't trying, but it happened. We are excited, it's just a little earlier than planned. I have had no morning sickness and I'm hoping that's because of the surgery, but it might be too soon. I hope I don't end up with it. I had miserable morning sickness the first pregnancy, all day every day and was hospitalized twice for hyperemesis. Saw my OB yesterday and got the first sono. He said all looks good. Hope it stays that way. He said make sure to take the vitamins and stay hydrated. I'm also grazing constantly to make sure I get nutrients. Hoping the weight comes off easily after....

    Is it cheating?

i dont see why you couldnt. its not (cheating) but understand that liquids does help (with the weight loss) via Water weight....as good as you are doing, why buck progress? eating food to lose weight is how to do it.....(to me, diet pills, liquids only is diet mentality)...we are not on a diet..and remember you are doing fabulous. you will get that challenge.
  11. I came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon and I felt good, but now I just cried as my family ate dinner and I drank my protien shake. I’m ashamed that I couldn’t lose the weight on my own and I’ve had to have surgery to correct my weight problem. I see them eating and enjoying their food and I wish I could enjoy it too. I knew this was going to be hard but I guess I didn’t figure in the smells of food I would miss.😢

    2 questions....

Hi kris. For strength.training I strongly suggest going out and getting a fitness magazine or two. Not only will it give you great ideas and tips, but it will totally help motivate you. I've become a huge fan of body weight exercises. The basics. Push ups, squats. They work the whole body great. Start building up strength by staying on your. Knees while doing them if you need. Bi cep and tri cep exercises can be added. As for juicing, I just got interested as well. My only concern would be that I'd be adding too many calories in liquid form. I'm still up in the air about it. Best of luck with everything.
  13. A "stall" a few weeks after surgery is not uncommon, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet. However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. What You Can Do About a Stall or Plateau If a patient is experiencing a post-op weight loss stall or plateau further out there are a few possible causes. First, check that are you really in a stall. If the scale has stopped moving you may be losing inches, so check your measurements.
  14. I did a little panic eating before surgery and gained weight! My surgeon threatened not to do the surgery unless I lost the weight I gained AND the weight I was supposed to lose. Once I started the liquid diet the weight came off fast. I wouldn't recommend doing what I did.
  15. I just joined a meltdown challenge for the month of March... last time I did this I won $ for losing 3% of my body weight. Duh, we can all totally rock this challenge, yes? Please join me in the challenge and be on my team! http://mdcinvite.co/TheHealthGames1-March-Crystal-16527

    clothes

I'm down 64 lbs pre surgery weight, I had so many clothes in about 3 different sizes. It was neat to start trying on all the clothes that didn't fit anymore. My closet has never been so bare in my life, but boy those clothes are looking good on me. I'm about 1/2 way there and so I'm buying a few new things at a time - that's the treat for doing so well. I bagged up my clothes and took them to my bariatric Dr's office. They have a box that people can go through. If they are around for awhile, they donate them. I know that I never want to go back to where I was. It is a scary thought, though isn't it? Good luck to all of my fellow sleevers. God, isn't it great to paint your toenails without being out of breath. Yeah.
  17. There's lots of stuff here about food getting stuck and causing pain in the chest, and about first bite syndrome, but does anyone else feel it in their throat? When I ate, I would start to get discomfort in my throat, and it got a little worse with each bite, or sometimes it took several bites before it started. Sometimes it would get really bad, and sometimes it didn't resolve until the food came up. It has lots of similarities to getting stuck that way. It happened mostly after the surgery (mild then), just after my first fill and since my second fill. My nurse and surgeons at the clinic I go to seem to find that I felt it in my throat to be a little odd. Anyway this week the surgeon thought best thing to try was taking a little of the fill out. It's been 2 days and I haven't had anything close to that issue. So, I was too restricted. Only trouble is now I can eat more than the recommended amount again (still less than before though so I could still lose weight). I'm thinking I'll just wait and see how the weight loss does go - I dread the thought of even a small fill right now. Just to be clear, I am still so happy I did this, and with the weight I have lost.

    Weight Loss questions

Hello Rohit, At my heaviest I was 388 lbs. I finally realized that dieting and pills was not going to work for me. I grew despondent and then a friend made a comment that I should get weight loss surgery. I was offended. I kept dwelling on it it, obsessing over her words. I was formerly dead-set against it and thought it was only for losers and was the "easy way out". I finally considered that maybe I was wrong and began researching it. After about a year of research and saving money I decided to get the gastric sleeve in Tijuana. I was 350 lbs on the day of surgery. Four to five months later I had already lost over 100 lbs. Today, I'm just 8 lbs away from my goal weight. I'm both extremely excited and anxious because there is both positive and negative things that you have to work through but I can tell you that I should have had the surgery sooner. I do not regret it and highly recommend it.

    wht should i do?????????

What should you do?....I think that some answers may just irritate the crap out of you, and my answer probably will....you know exactly what to do....and just like the Nike commercial...just do it. For some strange reason, people (lap banders included) think that this journey is EASY....it is not...it takes work. Do not give up and you should surround your self with positive people and situations...it sounds like you are in the "vortex of doom and despair"...know the feeling-been there, done that and got the t-shirt. You are worth the work that you need to embark on. This is a learning stage...you are still learning about how to live with the lap band and what actual hunger feels like. It took me 6 months to figure out that I didn't know how to recognize hunger. I am a little stuck on path. I want to be 100 pounds down by my banding anniversary, but I have been at this weight since Jan. 17th. But, I know what to do...and guess what?...I am not doing it. I am choosing to make poor decisions. But, I am not kicking myself to hard in the butt...we are not perfect and I will get back on track. Don't worry you will do fine.

    Recommendations for a new scale

The Tanita brand scales measure your weight, body fat, body water, lean muscle, visceral fat, etc. They are not cheap, but not crazy expensive either. This is the same brand used in my surgeon's office, but their particular model is fancier. You can set up multiple users for some of the models. I got mine from Amazon and we both really like it.

    JaNuArY 08 Bandsters.... howzit?

hey girl, thanks for the kind words.. i totally understand the getting down over the food thing... but i just don't know if i could bear to put the weight back on.. could it be worth having some taken out of the band and trying some thing else to help (i'm swearing off any more fills - i'm at about 7 mls so i can't go much more or i'll be like dead) so i bought a bike, and now i'm going to give riding it a go!! i hope you find a solution, and that you feel better about the band soon... it has saved my life and i am really grateful... much love and support from me to you xxoo jess:wub:

    Weight gain before surgery

I gained 2lbs before my surg. It did not delay anything and no one even said anything to me about it.
  24. amberj- i have bcbs in wash state. i went to my 1st seminar sept 7th, and started the paperwork. they approved me 100% in nov, and i just got banded dec 13th. they required a psych visit. a nutritionish visit, a note from my dr stating why she thought i would be a good canidate. she knew of my struggles with my weight and my family history. i also had to have weight watchers fax my year long history with them. bcbs approved me within 3 weeks- god bless them ! im down 14 lbs and it has all been VERY easy. good luck to you !!
