I am having my surgery in Sarasota on October 29th. That is only 45 minutes/1 hour from Tampa. The Sarasota Memorial Comprehensive Bariatric Program is amazing. My surgeon is Dr. Nora. The entire group at the program has been so supportive.

Are we allowed to ask input on centers around us?
KarenLR75 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I searched for Bariatric Centers near where I live in Fort Worth TX and a place called BETTER WEIGH CENTER came up with a lot of positive google reviews, but their website either isn't very compatible with Chrome web browsers as it acted funny when I tried to sign up for a consultation and when I tried to look at info on the doctors, the page didn't budge. I'd prefer not to go to see Dr. Kim's place....my own reasons. Anyone else know a great surgery team/bariatric center? I'm just wanting to at least dip my toes into the Water and get to an info night... -
Anyone near Frederick/Hagerstown?
SilverBand replied to tomatogirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi There! I live in Frederick as well and would love to start a friendship with someone going through the same thing as I am! I was banded on Aug 28 by Dr. Gorman with Summit Bariatric Group out of Chambersburg Hospital! I know, a long distance to drive, but when I started the process (1/08) Frederick and Hagerstown hospitals were not offering any programs! So, now that I am banded, my doc's office said that I can attend other support groups that are closer to home. I plan on attending the support group in Hagerstown with you! I know that you must be excited about your upcoming banding! I am still very happy but ready to go back to regular foods. The creamy stuff is really boring and it is difficult on my family when we are out and about and they are hungry. We have to search around for a place where I can eat something too! Sucks for them. Congratulations on getting this far on your journey! I look forward to talking to you again soon! -
Am I cheating??? Yes!!!
SleevedRN replied to mav2126's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well.....my Doctor who is in the top 5% of bariatric surgeons in the U.S. didn't even have me do a pureed diet. I was drinking full liquids right after surgery for one week. Which included Jell-O, pudding and sugar free popsicles. I am now 12 days out eating a soft diet. Every Doctor is different and it doesn't mean something is going to go wrong. I trust mine completely. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using BariatricPal mobile app -
Booking esg already worrying that I’ll fail
summerseeker replied to Lozzaintheuk's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
I cant say for everyone but I was not able to eat beyond my stomachs capacity. I did not try the slider foods. Still can not. When you are healed enough to get the full signal, about 6 - 8 weeks out, if you have one mouthful more it will sit in your chest like a brick. You will probably become very nauseous and will be unable to drink for hours till you have got rid of the extra food. It will be a very unpleasant feeling. There is no way that I can eat when I feel this way. As for worrying if it was the right decision ? yep I did. Its lots of money to take away from the family. It cost me over £12.000 so that would have been lots of holidays they would miss. It was a huge leap into the unknown for me. All I knew was at my age and size my heart was struggling with the most simple household tasks. Then they told me I was diabetic .... no brainer anymore. I booked a appointment with the surgeon the same week. Everything has failed for all of us before. Doctors now believe that Bariatric surgery is the only way to keep weight off. I am not at maintenance yet so can not say if its easy to do it but I know it takes work and regular monitoring. I am overjoyed that I was able to do this. I am a different woman now. TBH I feel blessed -
I'm freaking starving.
Greensleevie replied to goldenbarbie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The head hunger is horrible at that stage. Call your surgeon as soon as you know he will be in and ask if you can progress to soft food. I had a friend that did that and he allowed it. If so, stick with things high in Protein like refried Beans, Riccotta Bake, soft eggs etc. Mac and Cheese and mashed potatoes are not ideal for a post bariatric diet. I did soft/pureed diet without mashed potato one. Once you start eating more 'real' food, the cravings and head hunger should go away. On another note, a positive attitude is everything in order to be successful with these surgeries. I suggest you do an attitude adjustment or you will struggle. Start by losing that huge chip on your shoulder. That alone should be a few pounds. -
Pet peeve: extra skin.
Healthy_life2 replied to JupiterinVirgo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Holy hell! this is a long thread. Some people for plastics, others not so much. I looked into it, I just can't afford them. No one here has to apologize or justify the reasons they choose to have a medical procedure. Dang, how many of us have been judged for having bariatric surgery? The only thing I want to leave here for newbies..... Is the loose skin is not as bad for me as being obese. it's livable. If your fortunate to be able to have insurance coverage or afford them. Go for it if it makes you feel better about your situation. -
I agree with both @Creekimp13 and @Apple203. I'd go to the bariatric center, sign a release form and stand there until you get your records. Then go to your new center, and sign a form releasing your medical records. You have a right to look that the psych report and to find out why she said one thing and did another. I'm so so sorry this is so hard!! ((hugs))

After going thru the entire program in 2015-16 ,being never told I had completed and was approved, my job was terminated and lost insurance coverage. I thought I had only completed 5 of the 6 required dietary consults. I had not persued it at that time, I'm told recently former insurance only required 5 sessions. They were only waiting on a new # from new insurance carrier, they could have told me then but failed to. Hokay,I then[emoji7] started the process over last fall, did all my different requirements all over, had all done by the end of 2017. Have been waiting with somewhat baited breath for a surgery date, had 1 person call from surgeon's office and gave me February 15, turns out she was a minor peon and spoke out of turn. Official person called last Friday, said---'" oh by the way psychologist wouldn't clear you for surgery. "This person when I saw her face-to-face told me I had passed all requirements and she would be telling them that. 1st time thru I had talked to a full psychiatrist and things were fine, well I'm the same old me as I was then, Now I am told their commitee-' I call them the Bariatric Court of Appeals ---will be meeting February 20 to review my case. Do they over-ride the faulty assesment, does my surgeon have the necessary man bits, (I'd use the proper Spanish term but I don't want Alex to ban me,) to go forth with this surgery as I think he should? All the sudden I feel like like I've fallen into a beauty pageant and I'm being voted whether I'm Miss Congeniality. Does desire ,weight loss & commitment count for anything? I've cut my weight down 32 lbs ---and at my age and activity level it ain't easy! My Bariatric Facilitator Amber says to relax, and everthing will be All right, if everything is so okay then this isn't a game that should have been played. My past approval should count for something.I need this surgery, it is my last best hope for better health and a longer lifespan. If I wasn't depressed before, I am now. It is difficult to accept I am unfit and unworthy, I've fought that battle --'hearing that from family and so called friends.[emoji25][emoji25][emoji8] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

So far, I have not found a place to host my group. Although I do attend a group called Lawrenceville Wings (you can find it on yahoo groups). I do attend the Emory group and I think it's awesome. They are not promoting a specific surgery and right now there are far more lap banders than RNY patients. Not sure who gave you that bad information. //I was banded last August and have been a miserable failure of a bandster ever since.//Sorry about your success or lack thereof. You can message me with questions, comments or concerns you have about your band and your program. You can also read my blog at Mick's Corner for more tips on what I eat, how I exercise and what I do to be successful. In the end, this process is 30% what you eat (measuring your portions, not drinking and eating, eating healthy foods, etc.), 30% moving your body more and 40% attitude. That means 70% has nothing to do with the band. Most of the success rest on our shoulders to make healthy choices, move our bodies more and to be positive. Emory allows you to attend a support group meeting for free. You can find out about them at Emory HealthCare - click on bariatric department. My preference was to attend the RNY group sessions because those patients DO NOT CHEAT. It seemed like the Lap Band patients whined about not being able to eat certain foods and the RNY patients just didn't do that. I found them more helpful. I like that Emory rolled the 2 groups together because the post op instructions we follow are almost the same. There are minor differences but, in general, we all follow very similar rules: - Measure portions - Don't drink for an hour after eating - Take a daily Vitamin - Increase our daily activity - Eat a healthy well balanced diet - Chew food thoroughly - Take small bites I try to focus on the similarities and not the differences. There is also a Lap Band group that meets in Atlanta. They are on Yahoo Groups as well. Although, they meet at a bar & grill. I don't find that a support group meeting at a bar & grill makes the healthiest eating decisions. So I don't attend many of their meetings. Hope this information helps.

For those with BMI 35-40?
restrict2008 replied to ronwifey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
when i went to see my bariatric surgeon his nurse said to me "dont get this surgery you are so short and cute!!!" my father who was with me chimed in "and ROUND!" He is in for anything to make his daughter less fat, while my mom, sister, and best friend were all somewhat against it- I think mainly out of concern for me and nothing malicious at all. Well I am now banded and they have no choice but to be supportive! I am not telling anyone at work and it is hard to sneak around only drinking liquids. -

I had gotten very used to all of the flavors of Protein drinks before surgery, but post surgery they all made me sick. I finally got the Click coffee flavored kind and high protein hot chocolate. I put the Click (decaf still for me) with Water and ice in my magic bullet in the morning and drink it on my drive to work (45 minutes) and I have the hot chocolate (bariatric pantry) in the afternoon. My nutritionist wants me to add unflavored to my coffee to get a little bit more in one drink so I am working on that part. Those are the only ones that I have found that I enjoy. Hope that helps give you a couple of more ideas. HW 344, DOS 320, Surgery Date 2/20/13, CW 291.1 Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk -

BC/BS MI - Time Frame & Requirements Questions and more!
Butterfly512 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have blue cross blue shield of michigan thru my husband's employer, my bmi is 35 with some other health issues, and I am told by the bariatric surgeons office that it's the best insurance to have, she said we can "work around" the 6 month diet requirement before surgery and told me to write on paper documenting all the diets I have tried over the years, maybe that will suffice for the 6 month requirement? Does bcbsmi still even require that? Plain & simple..I am anxious, not just to get the wls but being in limbo and waiting just makes me deal with the stress of my weight problem, bad eating habits & failing diets even longer..and actually my stupid mentality about it causes me to just want to wait until my preop diet and surgery to start the process of trying to lose weight, therefore I eat like a dummy in the meantime, feel like crap and the vicious cycle goes on for now. Idk if anyone can relate? From what I can gather, it might be around 1 month before I can get my procedure done..not bad of course ..I just hope nothing holds it up or goes wrong, my primary dr is already giving me the impression that he'll take his sweet time getting the letter of medical necessity letter (whatever it's called) & cardiac clearance together for me :-/ Between wanting this chapter and change for the better to happen sooner than later in my life..and the fact that I am in my mom's wedding in june, summer activities are coming ..etc. I want to recover and get my new journey and goal started without interfering with it all. I was very pregnant during last summer lol..I want to enjoy this one with the family! So..I need advice on the insurance, time frame to get surgery, and any of the other stuff I rambled on about lol Thanks :-) -
First Post: Are there any other military wives going through this process?

So we are currently at Fort Carson and since there is a bariatric program in place here at the hospital I don't need to have anything approved through tricare which is nice. They have a minimum of 3 months process here and I'm currently balls deep in all my nutrition, wellness, and psych appointments. @laurato if you could have switched to prime you could have gone through the bariatric program they have at Madigan. We just moved here from Lewis end of June. My surgeon also said that they work hand and hand with the other bariatric programs at other MTF's so that we can make sure to have consistent care afterwards. Since the band is a much slower process of losing weight, I would say that the percentage of people who need their gallbladder out after bariatric surgery is HEAVILY weighted toward the bypass patients. Since their weight loss is SO fast and since the mal-absorptive process would say to me that the liver and gall bladder have to work extra hard. I would talk to your doctor again. Unless he can show you where tests reveal your gallbladder is having problems, I would have HUGE issues with them taking it out "just in case". It is your RIGHT to push back on your doctors to make sure you get the very best care. Your doctor should go in VERY conservative on this.

I'm sorry but if you're going to a bariatric surgeon then they know the rules of the insurance companies by heart....when you were found to be - for sleep apnea they should have stopped right there.... most insurance companies also say that if you have no comorbidities then your bmi has to be >40 x3years not just a few months....good luck to you but I would def be worried about that doctors office... maybe you can still get approved though...do you have shortness of breath, high cholesterol, arthritis, lower extremity swelling? These are all things that could possibly help your case.

Any lapbanders who didn't have obesity related health problems?
marnie723 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am starting to schedule my lapband and after following along here for months, I am getting nervous about doing this surgery to lose weight when I don't have any REAL health issues. My BMI is 39 but all my bloodwork & everything else is good. I am worried that I might be creating problems by getting this surgery when, right now, none exist. My weight has controlled my life since I was 12yrs old, I'm a major yo-yo dieter & have never kept weight off like everyone else who has tried. I hate being fat. BUT I just read a book called "weight-loss surgery, Everything you need to know about Bariatric Surgery" by the former president of the ABS and it has freaked me out. The book keeps saying over & over that it's a last resort & you should be willing to accept death as a possible consequence. I know all surgeries have that risk....blah blah blah but if we really thought we were going to die I'm sure we wouldn't do it. I'm worried I will be running to the doctor now for life because of slips, erosions, overfills, underfills etc. Who else had the lapband that didn't have serious health issues? Has it complicated your life? I am worried I might be better off fat then slimmer & having all sorts of eating problems with the band in place. -
I am working on my Master's of Science degree and hope to gather several responses. Would you like to be a part of research by sharing your experience after gastric bypass surgery? The survey is completely anonymous and asks questions about your body image perceptions and alcohol usage one year after having bariatric surgery. Just click on this link or copy into your browzer to complete the survey. http://nnu.us.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_aXzZzHDDZiajdC4 Thank you in advance for contributing to this all important research. Feel free to pass this survey opportunity along to anyone who has had the surgery. Warm Regards, Northwest Nazarene University

I pushed "post" too quickly!! Sorry!! At Bariatric Advantage I am on the auto ship plan....they send it automatically however often I specify, and therefore I get free shipping. There are 60 chews in each bag, and I take 4 per day. (1000 mg total) I have them send 2 bags at 9.99 monthly. So it costs me $20 per month. -

I am half way through.. all my appointments have been one right after another and I’ve got maybe three appointments left(sleep study, sleep study follow up,and Echocardiogram) and the 6 nutritionist visits left (which I have only four visits left) Everything else has been cleared .. My original PCP (the one that retired) made the original referral and said it was medically necessary (that’s why she made the referral) but nowww the surgeon for Bariatric said that because it’s been over a year I need a NEW referral and a new letter of necessity for the surgery. BariatricEating.com: Not What You Want To Hear...
geronimo replied to blashlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry, but you calling 30 years of obesity "laziness" further underscores my opinion. Science has shown that obesityhas to do with biological and genetics issues. Thinking it's nothing more than laziness has the same overly simplistic mentality as thinking that the only thing needed to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Getting Bariatric Surgery still requires heavy diet and exercise, but also requires that we literally put our life on the line to enable this tool. Putting ourselves in a position where we might die on the operating table seems to me like the opposite of taking the easy way out.
