    Menstruation after VSG

a lot of women have screwed menstrual cycles (and some have mood swings, too) for the first few weeks or months after surgery. It does eventually stabilize and regulate. It's supposedly due to estrogen being released from fat cells due to the rapid weight loss.

    Skin issues after RNY

My teeth are fine but I recall a few posters have commented on tooth decay. But I wonder if it’s the surgery or long term poor diet that’s contributing to the problem? I haven’t drunk soft drinks/sodas for decades & the last time I needed a filling was when I was in my 20s. (I think sodas are very acidic plus the sugar of course.) Not that I’m saying that’s why you’re experiencing problems. There are lots of possible causes. Genetics do play a big part in the strength of your teeth & general dental health as well. Oh & I wonder if the calcium loss you may have in your jaw could be affecting your teeth too?? Hot flushes & mood swings sent me to my doctor to ask for HRT. The day I got really cranky with my boss was the day I made the appointment - lol! Then a colleague admitted she’d noticed I had become rather ‘feisty’ when dealing with the public. Feisty is better than saying I was being a real b*tch I guess. 😆 Actually reducing the calcium loss menopausal & post menopausal women experience is a benefit of HRT. Have you had a bone density scan recently? Getting older suxs big time.

    Slowing down weight loss

3 months is still pretty early in the process. Over time, many people get some or all of their appetite back. For me, after year 1, I got about 60% of my pre-surgery appetite back. I'm hungry less intensely and less often than I did before surgery, but I do get hungry. As I was approaching my weight loss goal, my doctor advised me to incorporate higher calorie foods like avocado and nuts (more calories but not more volume). And that worked to slow and then stop my weight loss. Ironically, I do eat about 1000 calories per day, but I'm normal weight at this point, I'm older and I'm short at 5'1". So my BMR is pretty low. With all your activity and being a bigger person overall, I'd expect your eventual maintenance level of intake will be higher than mine.

    Gastric Sleeve BMI 35

What about getting approved? I am at 36 and change. I am 5'4 and have no co-morbidities. I have 2 autoimmune diseases and have had 0 success with diets, "lifestyle changes" and so on. I even took weight loss meds that had me injecting myself. Obesity runs in my family and at this point, 8 family members, including my sister and niece have gotten the surgery. My grandmother's cause of death was obesity. I went to an information session and they looked at me like I had 3 heads. Losing 80lbs at my age (43) and shotty joints is nearly impossible and I am having a hard time enjoying my life. I see the GI doc soon, as I have bouts with Gallbladder issues and I am hoping this is the deciding factor. What did you all have to do to be approved for this surgery? Any information would be helpful! Thank you.
  7. yeah who knew that losing TOO MUCH would ever be a concern but I'm coming up on my three-month anniversary of gastric sleeve. Have had no problems really at all ... Started at 280 with the two week pre-op diet and weighed 218 this morning. Never really stalled at all and am starting to wonder what's going to happen when I reach my weight target (190). I eat four meals a day but only 200-300 calories per meal so averaging around a 1000 cal/day. I swim 2-3 times a week and do yoga 2-3 times a week and I make sure I hit my protein goals every day. And am never really hungry. In fact my afternoon meals often leave me feeling like I ate too much. When I reach my goal how will I add calories? 1000 cal/day is not sustainable forever ... is it?
  8. I had RNY gastric bypass in august 2020. It’s true what they say, that wls is just a tool and you’re still going to have to work hard to get to your goals! But I’m super surprised that my hunger levels don’t seem to have changed very much. I feel hungry every couple hours, when I was hoping to be one of those people who didn’t think about food very often. My weight loss has slowed because of this, so I’m wondering if anyone else experienced this and has any tips. Thanks!

    Nervous to take the plunge

This is all rough. I was on medication for weight loss too, but my insurance said I didn't lose enough for them to refill it. I also have bipolar disorder and anxiety and I agree that it's hard to focus on your weight when your mental health is acting up. I am sticking with the first surgery center I went to because it's where my GP referred me and they're a large academic medical center in my area that has an excellent reputation for high volume. What you want in any surgery is for the surgeon to do a lot of your type of surgeries - practice makes perfect (I'm serious about this - I work in clinical research and all the studies show that surgeons who operate more have better outcomes, assuming the same level of complexity and that they are up to date in technique/safety protocols). I don't worry so much about the surgeon having the best bedside manner. I just want them to be technically excellent.

    Purée and stall?

the infamous three week stall. Happens to probably 99% of us. Stick to your plan and stay off your scale for a few days. Your weight loss WILL start up again.
  11. I had a somewhat similar experience, except I have not had any visits in person due to COVID - everything has been on zoom. The NP visit was a group visit and they just talked about the program and surgery in general and obesity information. I met with the surgeon who took a general medical/surgical history and asked about what surgery I was considering, but told me his recommendation was for a different surgery (I am in agreement with him). I met with the nutritionist who asked me about history of disordered eating, what I eat, if I had any things I couldn't/wouldn't eat, binging, meal skipping, night eating, use of medications for weight loss, previous weight loss attempts, etc. I met with the psychologist who took a psychological history (this was long because I have bipolar disorder and anxiety) and asked about eating disorder behaviors in detail (like restricted eating, purging, over exercising, etc). She talked about my concerns about the surgery and support systems and my expectations. I was told my insurance required 4 monthly group nutrition classes. I have gone to the first one and the second is this week. The first one was so dumb. It just covered general nutrition, what is a calorie, healthy eating, carbs, fats, etc but it doesn't talk about how to eat after surgery. Like they were showing portions that are way too big for post surgery. I tried to ask the weight center team about what tests I will need and they keep saying I won't need any (endoscopy, sleep tests, ECG, chest X-ray etc). I was surprised, but I don't have many co-morbidities other than high LDL cholesterol and mental health issues and migraines. I may or may not have GERD; there is some disagreement about that. I have some symptoms but not the standard ones. Oh, I called the surgery center the end of January and I'm told I might be able to have surgery in August!!!! This is partly insurance hoops to jump through but also COVID delays as surgeries were stopped a lot last year and also Dec-Apr this year. I hope the info @DoodlesMom and I provided is helpful for someone thinking about surgery and curious about the process.
  12. Are there any tele support groups you could go to? Is your practice's nutritionist offering telemed? Perhaps either or both of these could help you get back to your "weight-loss mindset". The fact that you lost that 5 pounds says to me that you have nothing to be ashamed of. But something to be proud about. You know what you're doing. You could just use a bit of encouragement.

Yes it was the same with my mom til she died at 86. I a ENT been to a gynecologist for many years, so unless it gets unbearable or something else shows up I don’t think I will be on HRT. I’m the baby in the family and I don’t believe my 2 older sisters are on them either. Hope it stays that way! Maybe the sun will help my skin, Today I go to the dentist for the second time since my surgery, and that has affected my teeth as well! I’m now officially falling apart! I may have bone loss in my jaw . My bite wing X-rays didn’t look good and all the sudden I have 5 areas that I have cavities in between my teeth! I haven’t had cavities for years!!! Last visit he gave me a script for strong fluoride toothpaste. So more meds! Can’t wait to find out if he can save my molars! Have a great day! Did you encounter any problems like that after your surgery?
  14. the infamous three-week stall. Almost everyone goes through their first major stall sometime during the first month after surgery (it's usually the third week, hence the name, but it can really occur any time that month). If you do a search on this site about it, you'll find something like 17,000 posts on it. And no, I am NOT kidding. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days if you need to - and rest assured that it WILL break. most of us hit several of these stalls along our weight loss journey. I think it's your body's way of recalibrating before it moves on. They typically last 1-3 weeks, and as long as you just stick to your plan, they WILL break. My three-week stall was weeks 2 & 3. During week 4, it broke and I lost like 6-8 lbs within a couple of days. So hold tight! btw - I just did the search for you. We're up to 17,501 posts on this topic: https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall
  15. Don't panic! I don't remember the specific day count, but it was about that time that my body did the exact same thing.. I think for about 3 weeks I didn't lose anything. Remember, for 4 weeks now you've basically had nothing to eat - (2 weeks pre-op, 2 weeks post-op liquid diet) now you're starting to add in some puree or soft foods and your body is probably screaming "HOLD ON TO EVERYTHING WE GET!! WE MIGHT HAVE TO GO 4 WEEKS WITHOUT FOOD AGAIN!!" My weight loss has been loss > plateau > loss > plateau > loss > plateau... As of this morning I've lost 113.6lbs, and tomorrow is my 9 month surgiversary. The weight will come off, it will work

    Any Vegetarians here?!

I am getting my Surgery soon in May if everything goes as planned! In the mean time I was wondering if there are other Vegetarian WLS members who can guide me through or make suggestions for Post Op Diet especially in terms of protein and how they ate daily in the intial phase of their weight loss!

    Flappy tummy

Spanks would totally help- they compress the body. Be sure to use powder or antiperspirant between/ beneath skin folds to avoid rashes and discomfort. Grats on your weight loss!
  18. I am five years out and did fine till “covid” year. I gained 5 lbs and it scared me...lost it by going back to no unhealthy carbs and increased exercise. I have lost the mindset I have had since then...since surgery really. I gained the 5 back plus 10 more in the past 13 months! I am ashamed and scared. I want my weight-loss mindset back..the one where I couldn’t imagine eating “white carbs” ever again. I am depressed.
  19. Hi everyone. I had gastric bypass 2 years ago and have gone from 299lbs to 178lbs. I am able to see that I am smaller than before but I have become more and more obsessed with my weight and the fact that my BMI of 30 is still obese and can’t help to feel like I failed this surgery. Prior to my weight loss, I dreamed of being under 200lbs but now that I am here I can’t help but be so disappointed of how big I still am. Anyone else suffering from this?

    Hungry hungry hungry

I find with me, it’s not so much the calories but the carbs that stalls my weight loss. How many carbs in the raisin bread?

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hello everyone, I'm also checking in to see how everyone is doing. I had VSG 10/16/20 with a surgery day weight of 213, today I am 162. My weight loss seems to be slowing down. Is anyone else having this issue or is it just me? I'm not sure if it is the norm but I have only lost 3-4 lbs in the last month. I grateful for that but was used to more weight loss. I must say that I am trying more foods and wonder if that is why the weight loss has slowed. Looking forward to hearing back, be blessed y'all 🙏
  22. you WILL lose some muscle. You'll also lose bone and fat. Weight loss comes from pretty much everything - bone, muscle, fat, water. Although regular exercise and getting enough protein will help preserve enough of the muscle so that you remain healthy. Also, at a much lower weight, you're not going to need as much "infrastructure" (bone and muscle) to hold up your new weight. and I can guarantee you will not be eating a tiny piece of food forever. That's just the first few weeks. No one would be able to tell that I had weight loss surgery at this point. They would just assume I'm a "light eater", if they even noticed at all. I eat about the same amount as my never-been-obese friends who are watching their weight. you shouldn't have nutrient deficiencies if you're taking vitamins. And in a few weeks you'll be able to eat more food - and a larger variety of food - so you'll get more nutrients then, too.

    I get a lot of headaches/migraines

See a headache specialist or at least your PCP. I have migraines and I have since I was in college (I'm 41 now). I was started on a preventative medication back then (topamax) which actually causes weight loss in some people and also sumatriptan (imitrex) for immediate relief when I get a migraine. It made a huge difference. Also, getting a bite guard from the dentist because I grind my teeth during the day (during the pandemic it got so much worse!) and that causes migraines too. Now when I find my migraines getting more frequent I wear my bite guard for a few days to retrain myself and also limit my TV (that makes me grind my teeth and the lights can give me migraines too!). The imitrex works 100% if I do get a migraine, which I got this morning from crying (I had a panic attack trying to deal with my health insurance company.). TL:DR - See a neurologist who specializes in migraines!!! You have to figure out what is causing your migraines and how to stop them

    Skin issues after RNY

Thank you for taking the time to let me know about the hair loss and the bumpy skin. I was told the hair would come back, but was just surprised how much it was!! The biotin is for when the new hair comes in and was told it will be a lot healthier with taking the biotin. We’ll see. The bumpy skin hormone thing makes sense. Even my face is breaking out some and I’m 69 and have been thru menopause for 19 years! But I know my mom had hot flashes into her 80’s so maybe that I’ll be like her cuz I’ve had more heat flashes recently as well. just knowing these symptoms are “normal” is enough to satisfy me. I’ve dealt with worse, and will probably deal with a lot more before my time is up. But I appreciate your explanation and your time! Thanks so much!
