BC/BS MI - Time Frame & Requirements Questions and more!
Butterfly512 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have blue cross blue shield of michigan thru my husband's employer, my bmi is 35 with some other health issues, and I am told by the bariatric surgeons office that it's the best insurance to have, she said we can "work around" the 6 month diet requirement before surgery and told me to write on paper documenting all the diets I have tried over the years, maybe that will suffice for the 6 month requirement? Does bcbsmi still even require that? Plain & simple..I am anxious, not just to get the wls but being in limbo and waiting just makes me deal with the stress of my weight problem, bad eating habits & failing diets even longer..and actually my stupid mentality about it causes me to just want to wait until my preop diet and surgery to start the process of trying to lose weight, therefore I eat like a dummy in the meantime, feel like crap and the vicious cycle goes on for now. Idk if anyone can relate? From what I can gather, it might be around 1 month before I can get my procedure done..not bad of course ..I just hope nothing holds it up or goes wrong, my primary dr is already giving me the impression that he'll take his sweet time getting the letter of medical necessity letter (whatever it's called) & cardiac clearance together for me :-/ Between wanting this chapter and change for the better to happen sooner than later in my life..and the fact that I am in my mom's wedding in june, summer activities are coming ..etc. I want to recover and get my new journey and goal started without interfering with it all. I was very pregnant during last summer lol..I want to enjoy this one with the family! So..I need advice on the insurance, time frame to get surgery, and any of the other stuff I rambled on about lol Thanks :-) -
First Post: Are there any other military wives going through this process?

So we are currently at Fort Carson and since there is a bariatric program in place here at the hospital I don't need to have anything approved through tricare which is nice. They have a minimum of 3 months process here and I'm currently balls deep in all my nutrition, wellness, and psych appointments. @laurato if you could have switched to prime you could have gone through the bariatric program they have at Madigan. We just moved here from Lewis end of June. My surgeon also said that they work hand and hand with the other bariatric programs at other MTF's so that we can make sure to have consistent care afterwards. Since the band is a much slower process of losing weight, I would say that the percentage of people who need their gallbladder out after bariatric surgery is HEAVILY weighted toward the bypass patients. Since their weight loss is SO fast and since the mal-absorptive process would say to me that the liver and gall bladder have to work extra hard. I would talk to your doctor again. Unless he can show you where tests reveal your gallbladder is having problems, I would have HUGE issues with them taking it out "just in case". It is your RIGHT to push back on your doctors to make sure you get the very best care. Your doctor should go in VERY conservative on this.

I'm sorry but if you're going to a bariatric surgeon then they know the rules of the insurance companies by heart....when you were found to be - for sleep apnea they should have stopped right there.... most insurance companies also say that if you have no comorbidities then your bmi has to be >40 x3years not just a few months....good luck to you but I would def be worried about that doctors office... maybe you can still get approved though...do you have shortness of breath, high cholesterol, arthritis, lower extremity swelling? These are all things that could possibly help your case.

Any lapbanders who didn't have obesity related health problems?
marnie723 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am starting to schedule my lapband and after following along here for months, I am getting nervous about doing this surgery to lose weight when I don't have any REAL health issues. My BMI is 39 but all my bloodwork & everything else is good. I am worried that I might be creating problems by getting this surgery when, right now, none exist. My weight has controlled my life since I was 12yrs old, I'm a major yo-yo dieter & have never kept weight off like everyone else who has tried. I hate being fat. BUT I just read a book called "weight-loss surgery, Everything you need to know about Bariatric Surgery" by the former president of the ABS and it has freaked me out. The book keeps saying over & over that it's a last resort & you should be willing to accept death as a possible consequence. I know all surgeries have that risk....blah blah blah but if we really thought we were going to die I'm sure we wouldn't do it. I'm worried I will be running to the doctor now for life because of slips, erosions, overfills, underfills etc. Who else had the lapband that didn't have serious health issues? Has it complicated your life? I am worried I might be better off fat then slimmer & having all sorts of eating problems with the band in place. -
I am working on my Master's of Science degree and hope to gather several responses. Would you like to be a part of research by sharing your experience after gastric bypass surgery? The survey is completely anonymous and asks questions about your body image perceptions and alcohol usage one year after having bariatric surgery. Just click on this link or copy into your browzer to complete the survey. http://nnu.us.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_aXzZzHDDZiajdC4 Thank you in advance for contributing to this all important research. Feel free to pass this survey opportunity along to anyone who has had the surgery. Warm Regards, Northwest Nazarene University

I pushed "post" too quickly!! Sorry!! At Bariatric Advantage I am on the auto ship plan....they send it automatically however often I specify, and therefore I get free shipping. There are 60 chews in each bag, and I take 4 per day. (1000 mg total) I have them send 2 bags at 9.99 monthly. So it costs me $20 per month. -

I am half way through.. all my appointments have been one right after another and I’ve got maybe three appointments left(sleep study, sleep study follow up,and Echocardiogram) and the 6 nutritionist visits left (which I have only four visits left) Everything else has been cleared .. My original PCP (the one that retired) made the original referral and said it was medically necessary (that’s why she made the referral) but nowww the surgeon for Bariatric said that because it’s been over a year I need a NEW referral and a new letter of necessity for the surgery. BariatricEating.com: Not What You Want To Hear...
geronimo replied to blashlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry, but you calling 30 years of obesity "laziness" further underscores my opinion. Science has shown that obesityhas to do with biological and genetics issues. Thinking it's nothing more than laziness has the same overly simplistic mentality as thinking that the only thing needed to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Getting Bariatric Surgery still requires heavy diet and exercise, but also requires that we literally put our life on the line to enable this tool. Putting ourselves in a position where we might die on the operating table seems to me like the opposite of taking the easy way out. -
NO JUDGEMENT ZONE!
Madam Reverie replied to Ready2Live76's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely not. Have at it. As long as you're not getting smashed out of your mind (because alcohol dehydrates and can take a while to work out of your system) and its just a feed of mexican food (hopefully the balanced good stuff), it will not throw your pre-op diet off. I was reliably informed by my bariatric nurse, the pre-op diet is to stop those who are chuffing down multiple bottles of booze and eating fried everything daily. A week before surgery I went out on the lash (drinking) with some gusto about 7 days before surgery. The night before surgery I had pizza, chicken tenders and a coke. I was given permission to do so.. That being said, however, i was a relatively low BMI starter, so the liver shrinking wasn't such a pressing issue for me. Whats your BMI right now? If my BMI was very high, I might not consider having the alcohol and just have the dinner. If you moderate your intake, so you're not a total glutton (maybe max 4 drinks, with Water in between and some food), it should be all good by Monday. Just be mindful as previously stated; it might mess with your head a bit after you get sleeved. I definitely mourned what I could no longer have in the short term. But then in saying that, this could be seen as a little food funeral (and EVERYONE, has had some form of that). I say go for it. In three days your world is going to change. Dramatically. Enjoy -
Borderline qualifying BMI question.
kmorri replied to rdharri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree, call your insurance to get a copy of the policy so you don't have any surprises. Mine was all the weights they recorded prior to submitting to my insurance.....this included weights recorded at the 2 visits at my surgeon's office, one at nutritionist's office, and my last bariatric surgery education class....and they all had to be within the guidelines. -
So my insurance through my job doesn't cover any bariatric procedures due to my job excluding it from our program. It's really expensive so self pay isn't an option for me. What other route could I take?? I'm so bummed about this

Thoughts on Protein Powders (Premier, Unjury, etc.)
ToughButFair posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm having trouble finding a good Protein Powder. I tried Bariatric Fusion and found it gross (especially the chicken soup). Premier Protein is just way too sweet for me. The Caramel is revolting, and the Banana and Cream is drinkable but soooo sweet. Everyone says Unjury is the best. If I don't like Bariatric Fusion or Premier Protein will I like Unjury? Am I doomed to find all Protein shakes undrinkable? Everyone keeps saying how great Premier Protein caramel is and I really find it disgusting. -

I am 63 and half way through the Supervised Medical Weight loss management. I have lost almost 20 pounds, focus on changing my attitude of food. I am trying to start this lifestyle change as I hope to get the surgery early 2019. However, my insurance is up in the air about if they are going to cover and bariatric surgery. I plan to keep going and I enjoy reading that others have gone through the gastric sleeve procedure with positive results. -
Let’s see last Christmas vs today
Frustr8 replied to NYJenn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last Christmas I was. trying desperately to finish up prerequirements for bariatric surgery at Facility #1, only had my sleep apnea one to go. When I had gotten to my cardiologist, because of the strong family trait toward cardiovascular problems I had a more involved assesment done than average. And I found the one cardiac anomaly I possessed was not enough to bar me from surgery. I was pleased enough with her care of me that I am retaining her as my permanent cardiologist , although I cut ties with the others affiliated with that hospital system. So the majority of my specialists are either here in Mount Vernon or at Ohio State University in Columbus. I had just joined Bariatric Pal, although I was a still-apprehensive newbee, everybody here was kind and answered my questions. And I was heavier by nearly a hundred pounds then but had started trying to lose. And I was going to my appointments, dotting I and crossing it's as I went, trying my best to make them like me, I still was trying to be perfect. Christmas 2018, I finally received my RnY in September, although my recovery has been and still is bumpy, I will never regret something I still regard as a Wonderful Miracle in my life, I had. sought it for over 3 years, fought an uphill battle against age discrimination from many angles, and now I have a PICC LINE in my upper left arm, receiving TPN 14 HOURS EVERY night, could have never forecast that twist, but I believe it to be helping my ulcers to heal, when the inner swelling of my pouch subsides perhaps the stricture will better also. So at least into January I will retain this added bit but I remain very hopeful that Drs Needleman and Noria are correct, I am repairable and will be okay when all said and done. -
I am a 45 y/o female. I am a conglomeration medical problems. They all culminated in a trip to the ER in an ambulance for a strained back due to coughing caused by congestive heart failure. I knew that day that I had to do something about my weight. I slept 1-2 hours a night due to sleep apnea. I heard of this surgery that could help 80 percent of the problems wrong with me. I could not be cured because nothing cures bone growth or arthritis, but it could slow the progression of my disease. I had a consultation with Dr Awad in Palm Springs, and found my BMI to be 53 and weighed 270. He thought it would be simple to get my insurance to pay for my procedure. They fought it. Finally, after running and jumping through all the fiery hoops they threw at me, I was able to set a date for my surgery 6 months after I first spoke to the surgeon. I had my surgery done 08/26/15 and I am sleeping now. I did not have any problems for my first 3 weeks, but now that I have reached the 4th week I have problems. I have difficulty getting fluids and Proteins in on the same days, and I am having difficulty eating enough times in a day to keep my hypoglycemia under control. I wake up sick, nauseous, and vomiting from not eating for more than 6-7 hours just from sleeping. Sleep was supposed to be a good thing. The bariatric team is great. I can not complain about how they have supported me through the last 40 pounds. I still have 90 more to go.

I have a kind of funny question
happymama2014 replied to mentalistfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm scared to death. Everyone I know that has had a type of bariatric surgery acts likes it's no big deal and that I worry to much.. Maybe so but I know I need to do something but I'm scared! -
Not That Bad a post, you're speaking from the 💘And no one should fault you for that! I am on the other side of the coin in one respect, Doctor just recently asked me Are You sure You Haven't had a Hysterectomy? like I haven't paid my dues. I'm pretty sure I would know and nobody ever told me it was a prerequisite to Bariatric Surgery any way. Makes me feel like a slacker, after all! Told my inquisit or You WAnt it, you can have IT, at 73 no great loss anyway! And then at least One Of Us will be Happy, Doctor Dear!

jflo replied to Lacey8724's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No I only have to give blood work the morning of surgery. I have been fighting a small cold the past week and thinking maybe I should have my doctor call in antibiotics to be on the safe side if it does not get any better this week. I am not sure if they are the bariatric advantage, I just remember EAS Advantage low carb protein shake. Let me know how the banana tastes, I may want a change of flavor after this case...ha -
My surgeon did a leak test in the operating room! That's while I was asleep. He's with a bariatric center of excellence and I researched beforehand about the surgery and thought that's how it is done now.

Going through process to get approved for Bypass after Sleeve. Sleeved in 2012 and have regained the 70 lbs lost. Acid reflux is returning, though it never fully went away. Just turned 55 and wondering about process and healing now that I've gotten older. I was a nervous wreck prior to getting gastric sleeve and once again find myself in that space. Same surgeon so that makes me feel better. He is one of the top bariatric surgeons in country but surgery is surgery. Woke up this morning thinking about bowel obstruction, and long term issues. Anyone over 50 have any issues post conversion?

I have been trying to get a referral for a few years at Kaiser. My first PCP said the surgery doesn't work, switched PCP's, he refused to consider any weight loss options. I have a new PCP, he referred me to the Options Program, which gave the infamous Nestle Shakes, shots, prepared meals, and pills as ways to loose weight, but not any surgical options. When I asked about surgical options, the Options Staff told me I needed a Bariatric Referral through Options. I asked my newest PCP, he said he gave me the referral. I called back to the Bariatrics section, they told me he had not. Anyone experience this? What did you do to fix it? I have tried all the Options presented, not interested in yo-yo dieting again. Thank you.
