    April 2011 Bandits

Hi millypili congratulations on being banded. I was banded on the 22nd. I didn't experience the shoulder pain like you are but I did have discomfort with the gas in my chest making it hard to take deep breaths. The best thing that I would recommend would be a heating pad and keep walking the gas will eventually go away. The liquid diet stinks but is needed to heal. I survived this week with my Protein shakes (Bariatric advantage) crystal light, Water, hot decaf tea and jello. I'm on the pureed stage now and that's been the hardest for me. I mainly have creamy Soups along with the Protein Shakes, yogurt and water. Things will start to improve as the days go by. Good luck to you on your journey!

    Lap Band versus Diabetes

Have you looked into alternative Protein sources? I use Protein shakes for Breakfast (when my band is too tight for solid food). I'm allowed light, protein-rich Snacks, so I will eat soy butter on apple slices (I'm allergic to peanuts, but Peanut Butter would work, of course)--the soy butter is too sticky on crackers, but on apples it's just right (just be sure to peel the apples!). I'm also deeply fond of Revival Soy Chips: http://www.revivalsoy.com/products/chips/ . I eat a bag of them (100 calories) with one or two rounds of Mini Baby Bel light cheese. It's my current lunch of choice. I love Greek yogurt, so I usually eat one of those a day. I like an ounce or so of salmon mixed up with a wedge of Laughing Cow Herb and Garlic cheese and served on Blue Diamond brand Nut Thins (crackers, but thin and crunchy and lower carb). I think the key is to be creative.

What the heck is goin on?

I will have to agree with others. It does get better. I have been banded about three weeks now and feel great. I have to say the reason I feel I have done so well with recovery is I walked.... and walked.. and walked. I did have lots of backdoor gas. and growlies. I used gas-x they helped. What I think really helped me was when I started drinking "good belly". GB are pro-biotic drinks I found in the grocery store by the yogurt. That got the good bacteria back in my intestines. Within a day or two of starting the GB, all the growlies and gas were mostly gone. Hang in there. You will feel better soon!

how often were you told to eat

Your taste buds will recover eventually. I wish they wouldn't! You are at an uncomfortable stage -- I remember it and felt the same way as you but looking back, I wish I had taken advantage of all that and just relaxed a bit. But that's hard. So, yes, start trying different foods. Some will work and some won't work right away. Eggs were always my go-to. Yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, etc. really helped me through it. I used to hate cottage cheese and now love it! But, I had to start out by adding jello to it. In fact, at the beginning I would add jello to plain yogurt as well. For the yogurt, I added the completed jello but for the cottage cheese, I added the jello powder into it along with a little bit of sugar free coolwhip. Mmmm. Still my favorite dessert. You can also add jello pudding powder into cottage cheese with a bit of coolwhip. When you can have it, I also add some crushed pineapple into it. Best of luck. You will get through this and do great!
  5. I am able to eat scrambled eggs and mash potatoes one week post-op. They said as long as tolerated. I am not a week post -op yet. I must be swollen still because i do feel restriction. I can also have cream of wheat and yogurt. You should be fine.

    Pouch size?

Depends on what I'm eating, honestly. 2~4 ounces usually. But if it's greek yogurt, I can eat a solid 5 and be hungry in an hour.

    Puree & Soft stage

Your nutritiionist should have given you an entire packet of what to do along with meal plans and recipes for your Protein powder. I had cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, tomato Soup made with milk and I put unflavored Protein Powder in it. Also you can have fat free puddings thinned with a little milk, greek yogurts with no fruit pieces and if that is too thick, thin it with a little milk. I really liked the kids gogurt, went down real easy and was thinner than regular yogurt. Strain the soup of any mushrooms or pieces of chicken. MIlk, soy milk or Lactaid milk. Liquid Protein drinks too. Drink 6 to 8 cups of Fluid a day and try to get your protein up to 60 grams a day. I had my surgery October 24th and I am now on mushy foods. You will be lucky to get 300 calories in you a day. Remember drink s-l-o-w.....Warm foods may better than cold or visa versa. Does this help???

    Hello I'm new!

Hey yall! Good luck to the preOpers and good work to the postOpers! Just wanted to share my fave way to get proteins and veggies in. I use my protein powder (Combat Protein Powder cookies and cream flavor, by Muscle Pharm from Costco). Then I add about a cup of fresh spinach leaves (from the bags in produce dept), a half of banana, some milk, ice, and peanut butter powder (PB2). Throw it all in the blender and u get a yummy nutritious protein shake! U can't taste the spinach at all! The drink has a light green color but it is wayyyyyy tastier then the protein shakes alone! The spinach helps me use the bathroom without taking pills. There's so many different things u can add to the shakes to agree with your taste buds cuz the shakes alone kid of were hard to get down even preop! Look for different ways to make them. Greek yogurt and peanut butter also adds more protein to the shake which is always a plus! Another tasty treat is Fat free sugar free black cherry jello mixed with greek yogurt! Again adds lots of protein even as a snack- it reminds me of jello with whipped cream when u mix it up. I also live on SF and FF Popsicles and Fudgicles! Very low cal snack that soothes my sweet cravings! I wish lots of luck to everyone who's sleeved or getting sleeved! Knock it out the park people!!!! ✌️
  11. We have similar stats and surgery around the same time. I don't have much hunger, but I had a really easy recovery (yay!) and don't seem to have any food aversions or challenges with eating and drinking which means I've been able to push myself to meet my protein and fluid goals from early on. That means even though I'm limiting my meals to 3-4 oz lean protein (usually with light mayo or greek yogurt because I am still on soft foods, or I eat a lot of eggs) and then if I am still hungry some soft cooked veggies, I get almost 800 calories a day. Part of that is because I'm still using protein shakes to supplement I am seeing my surgeon and NUT next week for my 6 week. My weight loss has been really slow the last 3 weeks and I'm hoping it's just a stall and they'll have some advice to pick it back up.
  12. Muscle Milk Light could be a good option. Make sure to get the light version as the regular is really high in cals. Also Carnation instant breakfast has a no sugar added version as well. It is however pretty low in Protein even when made with fat free milk. If you have a costco near by I would recommend joining. I'm single but still buy quite a bit of stuff there (food and non food). One I get the premier premade protein. Other things I've bought Pacific Brand Soups (much cheaper than the grocery store), Vitafusion Gummy Fiber, Kirkland chewable childrens's multi, Unflavored benefiber, roasted chicken, Nuts (walnuts, pecans), coq10, VitaRain (store brand Vitamin Water Zero), Chobani Greek yogurt.

Pre- op diet: shakes are so horrible

Have you tried EAS AdvantEdge RTD? They are not as thick as some others. strawberry reminds me of strawberry Quik chocolate Fudge is like YooHoo Cafe Caramel tastes like iced coffee. Just keep trying different shakes till you find what you like, everyone's tastes are different. What about Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt? Yogurt counted as a liquid on my program, or even Protein puddings. Where can I find these? I had someone in my support group say the same thing, but I have been unable to find these in shake form (I can only find the protein powder.) I get them in Walmart, which has the best price here, or Shoprite.

    Eggs

I have never heard that about eggs. There really is a wide variance in programs. I was allowed eggs at 2 wks and it was the best egg I ever had! I made it scrambled soft with a little bit of greek yogurt and some shredded cheese. It went down easy and was a welcome break from all liquids.
  15. I will be 3 weeks Post Op Wednesday and I literally cannot stop eating (nothing unhealthy of course) I am only eating what is on my list and next week I will be already on an unrestricted diet. I am concerned with the amount of food I am able to eat and I do not feel restricted at all. I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and a snack but I always find myself so hungry a few hrs sometimes even minutes after every meal and find myself snacking on string cheese mostly. I lost 17 pounds the first two weeks but I’ve been stuck at a stall the past week which I’m not too concerned about I am more concerned with the amount that I am eating with no restriction. The stage I am in right now consists of fish, tuna, yogurt, eggs, string cheese, beans, lentil or split pea soup and soft cooked vegetables. I am not sure if I should just ignore my hunger or eat. Has anyone else experienced this in the early stages?? I just feel like I’m doing something wrong !
  16. I mix PB2 with my Greek yogurt it’s taste ok and hasn’t made me sick
  17. I've been using plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I'd always heard about doing that but couldn't bear to try it. Well, now post surgery I'm doing it and it's really not bad. It has a similar sour-ish taste but of course more health benefits.
  18. Yes, for the first time I have noticed that. I had my fourth fill last week and I am noticing a lot of variances with it of which is the top full bottom empty syndrome. This fill is causing me to lose weight like crazy, but I am eating every 3-hours, which includes very small portions. I will have a couple of ounces of yogurt and become full but yet hungry. Previous fills, made me feel full all over for at least 5-hours. I am monitoring the situation. I keep fluids and solids down, but it is just a weird feeling. I might have .5cc out on my Marc 4th visit with the doctor; just not sure yet.
  19. Being on solid foods for 3 weeks tracks relatively closely to what my plan will be. My hospital only does a 2 day pre-op liquid diet, and then you are on liquid/soft dairy (yogurt, pudding) for about 10 days. They generally do the surgeries on a Monday and you go to a class the following Thursday, although I will have mine on a Wednesday, and I think I will still go to the Thursday class, so it's only just over a week for me. After the class, we're advanced to stage 4 for about 4 weeks, which includes soft/moist meats like chicken thigh, fish, and eggs, along with soft cooked veg and fruits. The only thing that doesn't match up with my plan is the cucumbers because raw veg isn't allowed until stage 5, which is at roughly 6 weeks post-op. But frankly, cucumber is almost all water once you chew it, so the volume is minimal despite looking large. My program doesn't bother with purees. We're just told to chew thoroughly. As others have said, you may not feel full this early because of nerves not being fully healed, so just watch your portions. If you've lost 25lbs in 4 weeks, I hardly would call that doomed! I would double check with your nutritionist about portions, make sure you chew thoroughly, and keep making healthy food choices like you're doing. You may just not have as much swelling as some do, which would explain the ability to eat closer to a normal post-surgery capacity right away. Just because you can eat a couple of eggs doesn't mean you'll soon be able to eat a 24oz steak and sides!
  20. Feeling GR88888888888888888888T , Lost 2kilos in the 2 weeks on mushies.... AND I CAN EAT NORMAL FOODS NOW........Yeah !!! August 2010 anyone?

I switched up when I drink my Protein shakes. I'm never hungry in the mornings, but I know that I have to have something to eat. That is when I eat a yogurt or some cottage cheese. Then I have a shake for lunch around noon and another one around 3 or 4. Then I can have Soup for supper. When I feel like I'm getting hungry, I will grab a sugar free popsicle. I've found that doing my liquid diet this way has kept the hunger at bay. I also drink so much Water, that I feel like I'm going to float away at times.

Diva and Bella, Thank you for the warm welcome! I am really hoping that WW and the band can finally do the trick, so far so good...we'll see how the weekend goes since that is the hardest time for me. I was born and raised in a 3rd world country and have a mentality that I must finish everything on the plate (including my kiddo's leftovers) so when I eat out I end up finishing the humongus portions they give you!! At home I try to serve myself only tiny portions and throw away my kids' leftovers as soon as they are done. Maybe I'll eat in during the weekends too! Yesterday: b-coffee w/milk WW2/60cal l- smart one WW5/ 250 cal s- WW yogurt WW1/ 100 cal Salsa Sunchips WW4 / 210 cal d- turkey/ff cheese sandwich WW3 / 150 cal Progresso 0 point soup WW0 / 120 cal yogurt/blueberries/honey bunches of oats (1 cup) WW4 / 200 cal WW 19 1095 cal
  24. The only "food" I have had permission to eat are things that melt in your mouth like liquid, such as yogurt, jello. I also tried a Jamba Juice which I know isn't the best, but very filling!

    November Sleevesters?

I was sleeved 11/15 in NJ. I had no nauseau or pain, sore of course, and the gas/reflux was pretty bad (get those Gas X strips!) but that was because they fixed a hiatal hernial. I'm doing really well, so far down about 11 lbs per my scale. I'm eating protein shakes, sf jello & pudding, plain/vanilla yogurt (non fat), I can have milk, oatmeal, pureed veggies, mashed potatos, broth or pureed soup, SF Ice pops, crystal light, tea, water, gatorade etc. The yogurt cup or jello/pudding cup is about a serving for me per meal. I'm doing fine, don't feel overly hungry, my body tells me when I need to eat and I'm listening to it. Supposed to get about 45-60 oz of liquid plus 70-85 g of protein per day.. I feel like all I do is eat and drink trying to get it all in! After 3 weeks of soft/puree foods, then I will move to more of a solid. I'm glad I did it, and I was a nervous wreck! Good luck to everyone having their surgery this week and in the coming weeks. It truly does get better every day.
