    Newbie saying hi

Hi, my name is Shelly and I am in the beginning stages of my journey. I have a scheduled surgery date of 10/30/06 and am awaiting approval from Blue Shield of CA. I knew that I wanted the banding done but wasn't real clear on how the fills worked and these forums have helped tremendously. I am very excited to begin this journey and look forward to "banding"with all of you. :nervous
  2. I had my first visit with the surgeon yesterday and OMG it was AWESOME!!! I have UHC and they say they usually get a response back from them within 10 days!!! So after that they will schedule my tests and my nutritionist appt and give me a surgery date!!! YAY!!! I'm so nervous/excited/ready!!

    Could use some ideas

I agree with the previous posting that yogurt is pretty good and Yoplait Greek 100 has a lot of protein and good flavors. Also ensure active high protein has 19 grams of protein and vanilla and chocolate flavors so you can add to your diet. The ensure is 8oz so you don't have to worry about drinking a whole lot. If you could tolerate a egg drop soup that's loaded with protein. You can try making your own. Feel better soon.

    Keeping It A Secret

4sweeties- I compleyely get where you are coming from! And, you are tight, humans have a very difficult time with "keeping secrets". I told me husband and kids and my oldest(19) told his girlfriend so then I felt obligated to tell the people I definitely didn't want to tell...my parents(they worry), my brother and his wife(they judge and gossip). My white lie was for awhile, I was going to a nutritionist. I was then going to say, when weight started to disappear, I was on a strict diet(Truth!!). But now since I don't know who knows, if someone is nosy enough I'll tell. to ask,
  5. Ziplining was one thing... I hit goal 2 months ago and I'm scheduled on Saturday for the zip tour! Skydiving may be the next! I decided to shed an extra 10, so once that's off I'll be scheduling that jump! I didn't really go mini-goals, just looking and feeling great and the new wardrobe was reward enough!
  6. I was told to get one with at least 20 g of protein and less than 10 g of sugar. I went to GNC and the guys recommended Amplify. I got the Creamy Chocolate flavor. They let me taste it in the store and I was surprised that it wasn't completely gross. I blend it with fat free milk and a couple of frozen strawberries and it is really good. I think it would be really good with part of a frozen banana but I didn't want any more gas than I already had. The 32oz. bucket was about $35. It has 120 Calories, 2g of Fat, 20 g of protein, 4 carbs and 1g of sugar.
  7. I've been on soft foods for almost 5 weeks now. I am supposed to be getting between 1000-1200 calories a day, but for the first couple of weeks was only getting 700-900. My weight loss slowed to a crawl, lucky to lose a pound a week. Lately, I've been more consistent in getting over 1000 a day, and in the couple of weeks that I've been doing so, I've lost 3 pounds each week. I do think that my body was holding tight to everything it could get when I was eating under 1000 calories. I had the same experience when I was on the Points program at Weight Watchers about 10 years ago (when it first came out). I lost more weight when I would eat at the high end of the Points range. So yes, I do think it can be a problem if you are not eating enough each day. My nutritionist recommends 1000-1200 calories a day, or 1200-1400 depending on activity level.
  8. Helo there! My update - Glad to hear your working with a specialist I am sure you are doing great! I am doing well just had my 4th fill - I think I am at my green zone- I do still have "head hunger" in the evenings but since cooler weather is coming I am sewing more so keep myself busy! I have one son 28 years old a daughter- in law and 22 FANTASTIC grandsons - 2 and 1.5 months!!!!!!!!!! Weight is sow but steady about 2lbs a week! Still excercising every day but change it up since the pool is too cold to swim now Walk away the punds with the band I highly reccomend! wow, HELLO fellow June 2011 bandsters. I was banded on June 30th. I started at 220# the beginning of my journey in Jan. 2010. Had to lose 10% weight by march 2011. At that time I was 208#. Gained back up to 215# waiting for insurance to approve. Surgery date set and weight was back down to a 206#. Surgery date weight was 204#. Two days after surgery I was 210# and now I am 189#. I have stopped losing weight due to relapse into old eating habits. I've been at 189# for two months now. I am working with an eating behavioralist to get "back on track" with my meals. I am at three fills and feeling some restriction. I am sure that one more fill will put me in the green zone. I know that I will start losing again in the next month as my behavioralist is aggressive in her therapy. So happy she is non judgemental, I judge myself enough lately. So I am married with four children, boy 21, boy 18, girl 15, step son 11 and boy 3. Also have a grand daughter 8 months. I live in Minnesota but my heart is warm and sunny in Miami. It would be nice to hear from more June 2011 bandsters. and updates on you goals and weight loss. I need some inspiration. Also anyone see the movie Corageous?

    3 week liquid diet?

If you pick a good shake that's has lots of vitamins and minerals I think it shouldnt be a problem. But again I'm not a Dr. I had to do a two week 4-5 shakes a day plus clear liquids. I started that around 316 and the morning of surgery (12/10) I was 300.1. So almost 16lbs in 14 days. The shakes they put me on were Bariatric advantage and I had to purchase the through my center. They were ok. They got kinda thick upon blending and yiu could doctor them up with fruits and sf syrups. But Dr said it definitely did my liver some good Good luck to you and always check with surgeon first.

    Hard to imagine being thin

Thanx MichiganChic, it's slowly coming off and I feel so much better!! And as I just said in another topic, make sure to measure yourself once or twice a month, take bust, waist, hips, each thigh and arms measurements. And, then compare, you'll be surprised. This past month I lost 1-3 lbs, kept gaining 1 and then losing 2, gaining 2 losing 3, on and on all month, BUT I lost 6 inches total in that month. So, don't get discouraged either, although trust me, I KNOW it's hard not to. We ALL want to see the pounds coming off at least 8-10 lbs a month and it's just not going to happen with some of us. I keep telling myself I didn't gain it all in 6 months so I'm not going to lose it all in 6 months either, and I haven't LOL! Karen
  11. I got over my cravings a weird way. I chewed a bite and spit it out. Nothing tasted the way I thought it would and most cravings have ended. At first I couldn't sit at the table when others ate...now it doesn't bother me at all. I've found I can eat a bite or 2 of almost anything 10 weeks post surgery. It's amazing to never be hungry! Now I'm 60 pounds lighter and loving it!

    I Feel So Weak

I was told 100mcg a day for the b12. I was tired too on the 10th day...I am 22 days out now and i went back to work this week and I still feel better than i did on day 10. I too thought that something was wrong but there wasnt i had blood drawn and all that good stuff. just keep the water bottle to your lips when you are supposed to and sip sip sip. I know its so annoying when we say that but I promise you that you will be able to suck it down much faster very soon.. I can get through 66 oz and more at this point. you just have to focus on it...and if you need a nap take one..it will get better I promise.
  13. Question for all. I have already been approved for surgery, but there seems to be an issue with my Triglicerides, which is in the 400 and my HDS are low, as well as my platelates being low. The Diagnostic facility was concerned about both issues and wanted me to go see my primary care dr asap. Also, they said it could delay my surgery. So I go see my dr and she reruns the blood test because my initial results are almost 3 weeks old. My doctor focuses mainly on the platelets and doesn't seem terribly concerned about my lipid levels...so I think it is all fine. My platelets come back normal, but of course no lipids, because she didn't test that. So now in the morning I have to go redo the lipid test and not sure why. Can anybody tell me why this is an issue for surgery? I tried to talk to the Dr. Benavides's nurse about this, but have been having trouble reaching here. So I am coming to the board to see if anybody else has had this type of problem. 7/27 Initial Consultation Weight 270 7/28 Blood Test 7/29 Stress Test <O:p</O:p7/29 sleep Test 8/02 Psych evaluation 8/06 2nd Sleep Test 8/10 2nd psych evaluation 8/24 Notice of Surgery approval Weight 260 9/21 Dr Benavides's Consultation 9/23 Surgery Day!!!! :-) <O:p</O:p
  14. Since most of us are off restriction on what we can do... does anyone wanna do a November exercise challenge? Like I hope to do 3000 steps on the wii fit 5 days a week for November. Which would total 60,000 steps. Anyone wanna join me? BTW I can do that in 30 minutes max. So it's a total of 600 minutes for a month, 10 hours. teri
  15. I am no doctor but it sounds to me what my doctor and books I have read call "referred pain". Basically, your shoulder hurts like heck but it's normal and relates to gas. For me, the pain was the worst of all pain associated with the surgery. If they had not forewarned me, I would have been completely freaking out!! The pain lasted about a week and a half for me. Call your doc anyway. They probably should have set better expectations for you. Basically, they told me my shoulder was going to really hurt and around 10 days out I would be completely hungry and that I should make my Protein drinks thicker during that time.

    I'm 10/18! Congrats!
  19. For the past ten days, I have been experiencing constant dull nausea in my lower abdomen. It worsens when I eat (so I'm only getting about 400 calories a day) and sometimes I have to lay in bed because sitting and eating can increase the nausea. I messaged my bariatric surgeon last week and only heard back from his nurse on Monday. She was rather dismissive, saying that I might have the stomach flu and I should write again in a few days if I'm not feeling better. I also messaged my PCP who does not have a bariatric background, and she hypothesized that it might be heartburn (I don't think so -- I have no pain in my chest or upper abdomen) but said if the nausea continued, she would see me in her office. But again, she's not familiar with the surgery and possible complications, so might not know what tests to order. I spent time researching through Dr. Google and got worried about internal hernias, which could be life-threatening if left untreated. Apparently, sometimes the only symptom is mild nausea. Or maybe I have an ulcer. Am I worrying too much? Has anyone else had a long episode of nausea (lasting over a week) that resolved on its own? Or was from another cause? As you can see, I am already seeking proper medical advice, so only would like to hear anecdotal information and suggestions. Thanks.

    For the newbies

also for the newbies - I am 13 months post-op. I want to echo the first 8-10 weeks are the hardest - stay with it - hope for smooth sailing but expect setbacks large (complications) and small (food upsets and problems) Find a few things to eat that go down easily and stick with those for a while. I ate cottage cheese for lunch and sometimes dinner for months! It tasted good and went down easily, find what works for you. Take it one day at a time and don't obsess about the scale! Best of luck - there is light at the end of the difficult beginning times!
  21. When I first started pursuing the band, I had Healthnet insurance. Then in January I had to switch to Blue Cross. Healthnet was a major pain, but Blue Cross has been an absolute dream to deal with. But neither company required a doctor-supervised diet. (And at that point I had no medical history whatsoever. Last time I had a physical was 10+ years ago.) I'm sure the lady you spoke to is right, but it never hurts to do your own research. If I were you, I'd call your insurance co. directly and find out exactly what their policy/requirements are and what you are covered for. Get them to fax or mail it to you in writing if possible. It's important to know what is required by your insurance company vs. what is required by that particular lap band program. I've read too many stories here about people who met all of their requirements and were ready to schedule the surgery, only to be met with even more obstacles and hurdles to jump.
  22. No regrets. Had a tough time post op. I'm 19 months out...Dr. Zane.

    How many calories per day??

I rarely go over 800. I am compliant, healthy and had my 3 month post op review with surgeon yesterday. He’s very pleased. Even though I’m at goal, my surgeon told me not to force calories/food. If I slip 10-20 pounds under goal before my new stomach can naturally hold more, everything will be fine. If you are meeting protein, water and supplement requirements, if you are healthy, you are likely just fine. If I were to eat 1200, 1300, 1400 calories per day, I would def gain on the reg! No question.
  24. So I'm officially one week out as of today. Have been able to hit Fluid and Protein goals since day 3, and only took pain meds for first two days. Went back to work on day 4. I feel very lucky and blessed as it seems there are many who've had a rough go of it in the first few weeks. I'm down 21 lbs since preop, with 5lbs lost since sx. Not too concerned yet as I know I was very bloated on fluids in the hospital. Doc gave me a good report and even told me to start purees early if I wanted (org told start purees at 2 weeks). Can't wait to see where I'm at in a month! HW: 374 1/15/16 SW: 263 11/10/16 CW: 258 11/17/16 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Four weeks out...the hardest part?

Me, too. I was banded the same day you were. The only things I have felt since then that give me any idea I have a band are the rare esophageal spasm, and some tension at the port site after walking for exercise, which has been limited to walking because of that discomfort. I had lost weight great in the 10 days post-op, but since going back to work 2 1/2 weeks ago, I haven't lost a thing - and never get more than 1200 calories, usually less than 1000. The science that we have been hearing for so long, (decrease intake plus increase activity equals weight loss) which I believe-I am a nurse-is not proving itself on my body. I have an appointment Oct 2, but don't think it is necessarily for a fill. I get the impression that my doctor makes that decision. Do you think I should I ask for one? I don't feel restricted, though I haven't really eaten more than a cup at a meal because I am afraid of GAINING!!
