    Help getting approved?

Hi Sara G....I have BC/BS Anthem. I just got approved for lapband removal and revision to rny bypass. It took a bit longer because they approved the removal and denied the rny bypass first time. After communication opened up between the dr office and insurance, it was approved this past week. You should have no problems. If you do have a partial denial, make sure YOU call and ask the insurance company what you need to do next. The doc office misunderstood in my case and had me spend 2-3 months extra doing things not needed. When I finally spoke to the insurance company (and asked for a supervisor) I found out what they wanted. So stay proactive on your case if need be. And...good luck on your journey!
  2. Maybe I am just looking for a little sympathy, but I just found out that the surgeon's office lied to me when they rescheduled my surgery. I was originally scheduled for tomorrow Mar. 3 (my birthday is today, so it was like a birthday gift to myself). I even found someone on Bariatric Pal having surgery with the same Dr. on the same day March 3. My surgery was supposed to be at 8AM, hers at 10:30. I bought the expensive Protein powder that the doctor recommended, and really stuck to my two week diet. I got a call Thursday saying the doctor would be out of town, so they had to reschedule my surgery for Mar. 18th. Today, I got a message from my surgery friend asking if I am OK. She got a call today, moving her surgery up from 10:30 to my former spot at 8AM. She thought maybe I was sick or had some other reason to cancel the surgery. Obviously, the doctor is not out of town, because he is performing surgery tomorrow. I got bumped for some other reason. I feel sick, deceived, angry. I suppose it is normal to question whether having surgery is the right thing to do. I spent a day really questioning whether the delay was really a sign that I shouldn't go through with the surgery. Is my life really going to be that much better? I have serious back pain. My disks are gone in my lower back, and I have tons of arthritis. My sister, who has never been overweight (and is younger than me) has the same back problems. I just found out that her most recent treatments haven't been helping her back. It's taken me a long time to get up the courage to have surgery. My main motivation is that I can get surgery that would possibly fix some of my back issues. Sometimes, my insecurity sets in. Maybe I am not worthy to get the surgery. Did I get bumped for someone more important? If the doctor's office lied to me about this, should i trust them to open me up, and perform a major surgery/ (I am having an open revision of a surgery from 25 years ago).

    Help getting approved?

Thanks so much, I'll make sure to advocate for myself I'm worried about them saying the revision isn't "medically necessary" bc my band hasn't slipped or anything. I've gained almost all my weight back and I'm always throwing up. What was your situation? Also, are they going to remove the band and perform bypass at the same time? Thanks so much for your help!

    Help getting approved?

I have anthem and was approved for removal of the band and revision to RNY. My surgery is in a week. I had to go for a year for fills/unfills documenting that my esophagus was having severe spasms all the time and I developed severe acid reflux and achalasia (I had to have an endoscopy and motility study). You have to prove the band failed (in other words, it didn't work because something was either wrong with the band or it cause complications of some sort). After my year of documentation and my studies, all of the paperwork plus a letter of medical necessity was sent to anthem and I was approved almost right away. I think anthem is pretty good as long as you have enough proof that the band actually failed or caused something serious, and the surgery is medically necessary (everything has to be medically necessary). Oh, and I had to have another psych exam - I was just honest and luckily I was cleared.
  5. I felt the same way. It took me years to see a doctor about my sleeve to RNY revision. It is very scary! but being anxious & scared is normal. But things got better when going through the program again and feeling confident with what my surgeon & team were saying. And honestly, being on this forum helped; to read about others revisions. Don’t give up and try to remain positive. If you have complications that can only be fixed with a revision, then it’ll all be worth it in the end. Hang in there!

    Sleeve vs. band

If I had trouble with my band, I'd consider revision to the sleeve. Elfie, I wonder about your experience. You are still seeking the elusive restriction, but I wonder where you are now, in terms of the sensations you're experiencing before, during, and after eating. How do they compare with preoperatively? I know you've made big changes in the way you eat. How different is it from the way you ate preoperatively? I'm not being condescending or argumentative; I'm trying to get info to figure out where you are and where you are headed. What are your expectations for "restriction"? How do you envision that being different from where you are now? I know you're very, very frustrated....just trying to think of things to help.
  7. I have a dilated esophagus from my band which caused what they called a psuedo achalasia. I had the band removed in oct 2013 sleeve revision dec 26,2014. I have been doing well. The dilated esophagus caused me to fail my post op swallow eval but my doctor wasn't worried said this was common with the dilated esophagus. My loss had been very slow as well but I keep reminding myself a loss is a loss. The dilated esophagus has me on the very slow path. It's scary but I pray all works out. I'm just under 6months out. The best of luck to you as you make your decision. I wasn't smart enough to be worried pre op. I just figured the dilated esophagus would resolve after the band was removed but it's not an automatic.

    A Dr C question

Dr C. Not sure if you can answer my question or not. But you seem to be very helpful to others so I'll try. I had my band placed 4/26/05. I have had many fills approximately have had 14.5cc placed in my VG band. I have never been restricted. I can eat anything I want. I had ugi this week and it looks as though my band has slipped. I don't know that I have ever had any symptoms of a problem. I know I have a pretty high tolerance to pain maybe I have ignored problems. I was getting frustrated because I have really been working on it. Exercising and eating good. Not to say that I have never made a bad food choice. Did I miss something I should have noticed. Will it hurt me if my insurance will not cover for a revision to just leave the band wherever it is? I am just confused and frustrated. I would appreciate any info you can give me.
  9. Dear Stuck, my revision was all done lap, not open. And this included having my gall bladder removed also. My surgeon uses staples on ALL of his incisions, even the teeny ones, but removes them less than a week after surgery. And yes, when I went back to have my follow-up appointment after the wound opening up I was put on an antibiotic for a couple of weeks just to be safe. I'm working very hard to keep drinking that Protein, and the wound is healing very nicely already. It's draining MUCH less, is barely painful at all, and according to my husband he's using less and less packing each day, which means the bottom of the "hole" is filling in with muscle again. :confused1:
  10. If my insurance had covered the sleeve, I would have been hard-pressed to make the decision--it is very appealing in many ways. I'm very happy with the band, but if I should ever require revision, that's the route I'd take. Good luck! I hope you get lots of good info at the seminar on the 1st, and move along toward your goal quickly!
  11. I know I've read of a few people having hematomas (pools/clots of blood) after surgery, but I'm one of the few whose incision came open and now I'm having to deal with an open wound. I had a band to sleeve revision on 1/08/10. When I went to have my staples removed, the post-care doc said to keep an eye on the swelling under my largest incision (where the port had been with my band). The swelling was the size of a lemon and pretty hard. It kept getting more and more purple/bruised looking and the swelling did not go down. On Saturday Jan. 23 (2 wks post-op) I was sitting down drying my hair after a shower. When I stood up it looked like I had been shot in the stomach. Blood was everywhere. I pulled my shirt up and saw that the incision above the hematoma had come open releasing the blood. I called my surgeon and he met me at the ER. The now open wound had to have the internal stitches removed (very painful!), then he cleaned and flushed it out and packed it with cotton packing before covering it with gauze. Once an incision comes open it has to stay open to prevent an abcess/infection. So twice a day my dear hubby cleans and re-packs my wound for me. He's a hunter and isn't squeamish about stuff like that. I looked at my wound once without the packing in it and almost gagged. Can't handle it! This continues to be pretty painful and is causing a definate slowdown of my recovery. I'm healing and have no infection, so I'm grateful for that. I still wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy though! I wish I could scream from the rooftops for people to NOT get the band - having to remove that port that had been put in so well in the first place really tore me up inside and left a big hole for all that blood to pool in. Those of you having the sleeve as your only WLS are so lucky!

    About to revise! Advice pls!

Had my revision about 3 months ago and it was easy for me compared to the band. I had very little pain, just some soreness and was back to my normal routine without the lifting a week after. I was on clear liquids for one week, whole, liquids for one week, pureed food for two weeks, and than soft to regular as tolerated. I can say that now three months out I can eat anything in small amounts. I did suffer severe nausea after the sleeve from about 4 weeks till about 7 weeks. I took some prescription meds and got through it and now it's pretty much gone. I have not thrown up once with the sleeve which I did quite often with the band. I was 164.5 when I had my revision and now three months later I am about 139. I feel great, I look great, and I am so happy I got rid of that band! You will do great. Best of luck.

    complication

How long ago was the revision? Could you have a stretched pouch? Have they done flouro on you?
  15. So I have one week to go until my revision from Band to RNY. I have been toldnot to do a preop diet but just to stick to clean eating!! I am extremely happy about that and could have kissed the NUT when she told me that as I remember how awful the preop was before my band. But do you know how confusing clean eating is? Yes I know I need to steer away from processed foods and added sugars but apart from that there are so many different variations. I haven’t been told no carbs but I am trying to keep those to a minimum ( except veg). I’ve also given up alcohol. Hopefully that is enough!
  16. Yes i am converting to RNY on april 16th i am taking all the meds i cant sleep with so many pillows but was able to sleep for a few hours in my chase lounge last night i will def try the benedryl tonight and as far as food ive barely been eating at all ive had toast with cream cheese and thats it for the past 2 days today im going to try just liquids only ...its just so frustrating because ive never had this problem and now 2 weeks before surgery im gonna go through hell ...im also worried now when i have the surgery im gonna cough like i am and hurt my new stomach right after surgery ....how long did it take to clear up after the revision?

    Any other 5'5 ers?

I just had bypass on 8/12. I was 285 the day of the surgery and my bmi was something around 46. Bypass is the golden standard and I strongly believe there are fewer side effects like severe reflux and weight regain. It is your decision, bypass is not for everybody, but I heard of many people having revision from sleeve to RNY. Good luck!!

I did all the bad things!

Well, and I can revise my statement a bit, too. This past summer, at just shy of 2 years post op, my daughter's in laws were visiting from England. Being the ever so cordial hostess, we were having dinner and some wine out on my back patio and having a gay old time chatting it up getting to know each other. Keep in mind I literally can count on two hands how many times I've drank post op. A couple hours later, I had managed to polish off a whole bottle of red wine by myself and completely blacked out. I would say I that's the definition of a 'bad' thing You know what they say on the internet. "Pics, or it didn't happen!"
  19. I had my band to sleeve revision on August 30, 2010 and I did not have any problems. I only used the pain pump the night of the surgery. I never had to take any other pain meds in the hospital or when I got home. They brought me a liquid tray the next day and I was able to drink it fine with no problems. I was up and walking in the halls of the hospital too cause I was so bored. I went to my daughter's pep rally the day I got home from the hospital My doctor had me on liquids for three weeks. Then I progressed to mushies for a week or so and then onto solid food. You can eat just a little at a time, but you don't get that "full" feeling in your chest like with the band. It is more normal you just can't eat much. I had a major last minute freak out wondering what I was doing to myself, but I had to take a deep breath and everything turned out fine. You will do fine. Good luck and keep us posted.

    Pills

Initially post op, I was advised not to take my pills orally without crushing them. Prior to my surgery I had as many of my medications revised to forms I could tolerate post op ( liquid or chewable). As others have posted, you are not supposed to crush time released medications ( you would risk possible overdose) or open capsules. I hated crushing pills; no matter what I used to disguise the extreme bitterness, I could still taste them and they made me gag. Within a few weeks post op, I was able to swallow the majority of my meds whole...a major improvement that continues today. I just have to remember to take a sufficient amount of Water with each pill, and to take them 1 at a time, and wait about 30 seconds between pills. The only "stuck episode" I ever had was with a pill and not having enough water to properly swallow it...life lesson learned; it only happened 1 time. Since having my band placed, I have had both CT and MRI studies completed without incident. I was told that the band has no metal parts, so there is no cause for concern.

I will be so glad when it's OUT!

I am so happy you are getting rid of your band. You will love the sleeve. I agree that it is annoying that doctors are promoting the band. I can't stand the lapband commericials! They make it sound so great and easy when the fact is most with the band fail. I am thankful that my revision doctor doesn't like bands and told me about the sleeve. He sees all the problems with the band because he fixes so many of the problems they cause. The thing about the band is that is where the money is. Doctors make money from fills, flouro, and later down the road revisions. They even lowered the BMI requirement so that more people can have them and suffer! My band was nothing but a big pain. Now that I have had so much success with my sleeve I will tell anyone that will listen NOT to get the band. I can't believe I had that thing in my body so long. Anyway, good luck with your revision! You will do great. You will appreciate your sleeve so much. Hugs and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I am here if you have any questions!

I will be so glad when it's OUT!

I'm glad you did too Lily, I wish more people would talk about problems with their bands because I think we are led into thinking that these problems don't happen to everybody that has a band. I also think that maybe these doctors are getting kickbacks from the companies that sell Lap or Realize Bands, I mean, why would they be pushing the band so hard when there is such mixed results? And think about it, when you get the RNY or the sleeve, there is no device or whatever, so basically no outside company is making money off the surgery. Sorry for the mini rant but I get kinda pissed when I think about how much time and money I have put into my band and I am no where near where I want to be (weight wise). I am very fortunate that I now have insurance that will cover a revision to the sleeve, otherwise I would just be stuck with it.
  23. I had surgery to remove my gall bladder and revise my sleeve to a bypass on 23rd January my surgeons profile is soft food from day 3, with which I have coped well I started experiencing about a week ago a severe and constant pain on my left side about 6 inches below the major incision .on the left side . The acute area of pain is about 4 inches long but when bad , the pain radiates to my back. Assuming it was constipation, i got some serious laxatives from the doctor . Things starting moving and the pain was less but still niggling. 24 hours later it is as bad as it ever was. I don’t have fever has anyone else experienced this please or have any suggestions / advice. i have a Hospital follow up next Thursday. Is it safe to wait until then? i would appreciate any feedback. Thank you
