Anyone get REALLY scared close to surgery?
Karenytrevision replied to char3672's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am really scared too and my surgery date #1 of 2 major surgeries planned is June 1st. Dr. is doing a revision of a faulty rny I've had for 13 years and fixing a hiatal hernia it caused, and in #2 surgery doing a sleeve, possibly later a DS. I am scared if I don't have the surgery and I'm scared if I do!! Anyone having surgery in May or June interested in being a surgery buddy with me? I'm nice, really!! My surgery date is June 1 2017 no the 07-18-2016 show on the profile as it took 3 appeals to get insurance to cover. Karen State of WA -
Duodenal Switch by Dr Ponce De Leon
BrookeDM posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am looking into getting a sleeve revised to a duodenal switch with Dr Ponce De Leon in Tijuana MX. I can only find 2 people that have used him for DS in the past and none are responding to me for updated opinions. Anyone here use him for a DS can you tell me if your experience was good? Any complications? How long before you went back to work? What kind of vitamins do you take? Thanks in advance for any feedback!- 1 reply

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I've heard a lot of bad feedback on the lapband so I recommend you talk to some bariatric surgeons for their advice - such as removing it and revising to a gastric bypass or DS.

What do you wish you would have know pre-op?

The reflux and needing revision is why I just went with the bypass. One time is enough for me. -

There are a few for me, I knew about reflux but didn't know SOOOO many suffer from it long term & possibility of needing revision if adaquete weight loss was not reached/etc. I personally never want to undergo another bariatric wls. -
Has Anyone Had a Second Sleeve?
MBird replied to SoCalLeslie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi SoCal, I'm sorry you're having issues, and you already answered your own dilemma! You're eating the wrong foods. Surgeons have done study after study and find the pouch does not stretch over time, but what happens is the hormones change, signaling your brain you can eat more. It's normal to feel you can eat more, and very expected. You did nothing wrong, and did not stretch out your pouch. A revision is possible but any doctor will let you know that a revision won't help you in the long run, but changing your habits will. You need to eat many more veggies and fruit, legumes and nuts. Steer clear of beef, beef has fat hormones. Chicken a tough on digestion. Eat fish, it's high in protein and gentle on the tummy. The Mediterranean Diet, basically. Don't regress back to the diet you were on initially (liquid)- that will harm your metabolism. If you cannot kick your bad habits, I suggest a support group for food addiction or a therapist, which may help you alleviate some of your issues with eating the foods you seem drawn to eating/or are addicted to by addressing the reason why you eat those. The surgery is a one time deal, really, to address those issues before hand and try to curb the tendencies that helped us put on on weight in the first place. Many people find themselves in your predicament and are hard on themselves, when really the solution is to simply change your eating and exercise habits to what they need to be for the rest of your life. I also suggest working out. The best exercises are some you can do outside a gym and in your home, push ups, squats, anything you use your own body weight. These reduce injury and burn a lot as you get cardio and weight in simultaneously. Wishing you absolute success! I think you can do this! -
Tomorrow is surgery day guys!
general_antiope replied to lf1227's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
How is it going? I'm just starting my journey to get on the path to revision...my GERD is out of control and ruining my life. Meds don't help, my band is unusable; either too tight or too loose and I've gained weight. Meeting a team this week to learn about options, but I'm pretty sure RNY will be the result. How are you feeling? -
Considering revision
summerset replied to general_antiope's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
A revision won't cure mindless eating (I guess you're already well aware of this) but it can help with reflux issues. I got a revision to bypass myself and reflux issues got way better. If you're having reflux issues a surgeon will usually advice against a sleeve. -
Trying to decide if I should just remove my band, or convert
Daenerys Targaryen replied to loridee11's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I revised band to bypass and am so glad I did. The bypass has a more natural feel. You just get full like a normal person, and I don't have to deal with foods getting stuck and all that. Plus, the weight loss is quicker and better than the band. -
Hi all. I've been banded since 2005, lost 100 lbs the first year then stopped due to multiple mechanical issues. I had the Port replaced, then the tube replaced, and I never got back to that sweet spot and floated on 20 lbs fluctuations for the next 5 years. I then got pregnant and my band disconnected at month 4. I remember the feeling of my band unfilling completely and thought "oh sh*t." I gained 60 lbs in 6 months, had a new band replaced in feb 2013, then proceded to get myself pregnant again before my first fill in May. Well that that baby is now 3 and I am gaining. I've gotten fills and lost 30 lbs but then suddenly had night time regurgitation, unable to eat, swollen throat. They unfilled me and refilled me due to slippage. This new band is lenient and unpredictable and now I've developed terrible reflux that medications aren't helping. I'm eating mindlessly again and can't get control. I can't get filled until I get the gerd under control. I've gone up 30 lbs and now am at a net overall loss of 40 lbs. I am not happy. Its been 12 years, three revisions. I am considering the sleeve but am concerned my issues with gerd will make me a bypass candidate. Does anyone have a similar experience to share? i found a well respected and credentialed hospital and am starting the process to get a local doc to evaluate me for revision. I am ready to do what it takes but sleeve seems much more desirable for many reasons. I just want the hunger gone or muted. I was free from the mental noise of food for a good while and I made good choices. I can't get back there on my own.

4 days post op and what a journey!
No yum yums posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello All, I'm 4 days post op and what a journey! I had a band for 12 years which eroded and had to be urgently removed. My band did its job, but I gained lots of weight after removal. So, a revision to bypass was my option. I can tell you I was a complicated case due to adhesions and the discovery of 2 hernias. My poor wittle belly! I just wanted to add it will be great getting out of my fat suit and into my skinny suit again. All this pain is worth the long term result of being healthy! I love hearing others stories. It's a great way to support each other. Thank you. It's nice to know I'm not alone on this journey. -
Trying to decide if I should just remove my band, or convert
Diane Moro Abramowitz replied to loridee11's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I feel for you, I had similar issues. Once the lapband fails, that's it! Believe me, BTDT. I had my band removed and revised to gastric bypass. Big difference and I would do again in a heartbeat. My practice won't even do bands anymore as they have proven to fail more often than not long term. I feared bypass more than I can say, but for me it has been the true key....no more being a slave to hunger! One thing I can say is that weight loss may be slower after having another weight loss surgery. Still, I am 63 years old and unless I'm losing, I'm gaining so this is good! Have no fear, just do it. -
Has Anyone Had a Second Sleeve?
Deactivatedfatgal replied to SoCalLeslie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes I have heard of quite a few people doing a sleeve to sleeve revision due to no weight loss or over eating and truly expanding it. YouTube has videos of it. I personally wouldn't want to redo anything, get strict and get back on track! Gl to you. -
My weight loss is at a stand still for the last 6-8 weeks. I presently exercise and very small food portions. Also starting to increase water and one. Protein shake a day.I pray by end of May will see some weight loss. Please help a a sister out🙂

Has Anyone Had a Second Sleeve?
chuswysly replied to SoCalLeslie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeve last August, 2016. While there another patient was there for a "sleeve revision". Perhaps you could have your doctor do a barium test on your sleeve to see if it has enlarged. I know some doctors will do a revision and repair. Good luck. -
Has Anyone Had a Second Sleeve?
OutsideMatchInside replied to SoCalLeslie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@SoCalLeslie Do you weigh all of your food and track it? Do you start your meals with 4 ounces of dense protein? That is the first place to start to get back on track. If you weigh/measure track your food and use that for portion control, you don't over eat. 4 ounces is enough to fill me up and satisfy me, even though I can eat 6, I choose not to eat 6. I am talking about dense protein. I can eat endless amounts of trash if I choose to. You had surgery 2 days after me. I don't see how your sleeve could be stretched, not to the point of causing regain. I'm still losing weight at almost 22 months out from surgery. You already admitted to eating the wrong things, being resleeved or revised isn't going to save you from bad food choices, not long term. Even if you revise if you don't create proper eating habits, once that "honeymoon" period is over, also called healing, you will just start eating poorly and regaining again. Hopefully the therapist can help you with your eating. Good Luck! @akreese02 My metabolism is high to normal. I can maintain on over 2000 calories, and lose albeit slowly on just a little less, with minimal exercise. If you eat properly and increase your calories as you progress you don't damage your metabolism. I'm not guessing about my metabolic level, I have it tested. I started having it tested at first just to dispel this idea that surgery kills your metabolism and to make sure mine was on track so I couldn't use "slow metabolism" as a crutch for bad choices. There are a lot of other people that post here, like @BigViffer that maintain and lose on higher calories, but they all raised their calories as they progressed from surgery. The reason people regain on just a few calories is they keep their calories in the 800-1000 range for too long and kill their metabolism. -
Any Seattle/Tacoma Sleevers with surgeries approaching?
Karenytrevision replied to kadie777's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have June 1st as my surgery #1 date as Dr is doing my revision in different stages on June 1 and later August 1, with a possible third surgery after if he decides to do a DS instead of or after the sleeve. I am using Dr. Billing out of EvivaMD located near Seattle. Anyone (s) want to be surgery pals? Karenyt -
I am almost 2 years postop and am concerned I've stretched my pouch. I know I eat too much and have gained about 15 pounds. I need to lose more weight before I can have knee replacement surgery, yet I continue eating the wrong foods and too much. I am scheduled to see a therapist but am wondering if anyone has had a sleeve revision (sleeve to sleeve). I don't want to consider bypass. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Pre and post op questions I should be approved soon
revengebody🙌🏽 replied to revengebody🙌🏽's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I will be have a band to sleeve revision! I have had 3 kids now all c sections and I ALWAYS get us ASAP! I have always had high pain tolerance and with my kids at home I will have no problem doing all I can to get home asap lol ... as far as work how long did y'all take off? And what are the diets like pre and post -
It is hilarious because when you watch 600 lb life, those people are literally 1/2 a ton and they only lose 30 pounds in a month. And most of them are in the hospital that first month on a stricter diet than those of us at home. @ShelterDog64 I answered your age question in PM, don't want to give up too much personal information online. I know you have lost most of your weight, but you still aren't even a year post op. Plastic surgery prices and demand is lower in the fall/winter, which is why I picked that time to have my surgery. I really was shooting for Fall of 2017, but I think fall of 2018, maybe even 2019 might be better, it just depends. My skin has no snapback. I've had stretch marks since I was a kid just from growing. My skin just genetically is not very elastic, at least not in my body, face is amazing. The way I am losing and my fat is settling is really different the closer I get to goal. Like if there was only one surgery I could afford it would be arms. That is the must do, Everything else I can hide. For me, a breast lift is just vanity so I can go braless and wear strapless dresses. Men don't care what tits look like as long as they can touch them. Physically my breast do no bother me, especially since they are much lighter. My apron bothers me, it flop, but I don't get infections and I don't have issues with it. My belly button does get gross and I have to clean it carefully, but at the end of the day that is all something I can hide in clothes. As much as I would love to get my thighs done, people with thighs like mine don't end up with good results from thigh lifts. i would still never be able to wear short shorts of a bathing suit without shorts, so it is a waste of money. I think you might find when you get to goal, that things look and feel a little different. In your second year, you still might lose weight. Back when vets used to post here, a lot of people would comment that they lost another 5 to 10 pounds without trying. 5 or 10 pounds doesn't seem like a lot for heavy people, but once you are under 200 that is a size or worse a size and a half (being between sizes is the worst!) depending on where it comes from. If you get your body snatched and lose another 10 pounds from ????? on your body, you are diminishing your results. It is a lot of money to spend, better to wait and get it right than to do it and want a revision.

BCBSTX requirements for Lap band to sleeve conversion
Navigating the Wilderness replied to Jaxson01's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It will definitely depend on your insurance. In my case since it was a revision I only had to do 3 months, but yet again they requires a psych eval. -
Did anyone here not need this (yet)?
SIPS in Seattle replied to jessgnc's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I was banded in 2011 and am currently looking into revision. I've talked to my surgeon about the sleeve and the ds. I'm 5'6 I started at 239 down to 185ish then back up to 242. So my bmi is still a little under 40. My surgeon thinks the Ds would be a better option as A) this is a revision and it's slower to lose the ds has a higher success rate at losing and less chance of regain. I don't really have any comorbidities... just crappy lungs (asthma) -
I just watched a video on YouTube of a WLS patient that is 4 years out, had multiple revisions and is kind of a failure at WLS. It reminded me why I don't take diet or health advice from fat people.

Band revision to sleeve
Navigating the Wilderness replied to Feelinghopefulnow's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had it done 3 months ago. Within 1 month I lost more weight than during the entire 5 years I had the lap band. No regrets or complications with the band to sleeve revision. Mine was one surgery, and I felt about the same pain-wise as the lap band surgery. I would definitely say go for it! -
