Sometime with the sleeve you can develops reflux, sometimes bad enough to need a revision. For that reason I went with bypass. One surgery is enough for me. Also, your insurance may not cover another surgery.

    Not gas a leak

Hopefully you won't, I mean I have heard of someone who had leak ans needed a total gastrectomy. I'm glad they found it now though because I have heard of leaks at 7 months out. I feel you will be healed and won't need a revision to bypass!
  3. I don't know if you've had RNY yet or not (your profile says VSG, so maybe you're thinking of revising?), but most RNY'ers don't dump. The statistics I see thrown around is that only 30% dump. I don't know if there's any research behind that, but I do know a ton of RNY'ers who don't dump and never have. I don't, either. Sometimes I wish I did...
  4. I'm pre-revision but protein shakes I have trouble with too. They basically cause me to flush within minutes of drinking them. (I'm banded looking into ds revision)

  7. Hello, why are you getting a revision? Everything will be fine

I'm not post op, but my surgery is June 21st. I'm going with the bypass because I have severe GERD. My surgeon said the RNY is less likely to make it worse. I also researched it a lot and noticed that with the sleeve my GERD most likely stay the same or become worse. One surgery is plenty for me. I wouldn't want to get the sleeve and have to turn around and revise to RNY. I have about 120 pounds to lose. I hope this helps! I'm looking for surgery buddy's if you are interested! Take care!

    Approved!!

This has been a long time coming, I've been in the bariatric program since September. My insurance coordinator assured me before that it would be almost impossible to get a revision and sleeve approved and today she called me that I was approved!!! My eyes filled with tears of joy!!! 5/23 is my date, it is less than the typical 14 days of pre-op liquid diet, will that make any difference? I am still waiting to hear from my surgeon's office for complete instructions. Please send me any and all of your tips/tricks/advice on pre-op diet and how to best prep for my big day. Also, how long did you stay in the hospital? Sooooo thankful and excited!!!! [emoji28][emoji1317] Thanks in advance!
  10. My band only work so so for me. Then after several years it slipped. I actually felt it move. It was very weird. Gained almost all my weight back. Had to make sure I knew where the bathroom was in every restaurant. After the slip I had to literally sleep sitting up to keep from having violent coughing spells in my sleep. I got no sleep for the last 3 months before my revision. Since revision I sleep beautifully. Have not thrown up or gotten stuck once. I can eat so many things I couldn't eat before. Well really anything. And I'm losing weight again. Even within about two weeks of having the revision I was amazed at how much better I felt just having the band out. Now with all that said, let me just say, the slip was my fault for over eating and eating the wrong foods. So was the problems after the slip for the most part. So if you will stick rigidly to the diet plan that your dr gives you, you shouldn't have the problems. The band will work if you don't break the rules. It's just got its issues you will learn to deal with. I always felt that if nothing else it prevent me from just getting bigger and bigger for the 6 years I had it. Best wishes to you! Be strong. You can do it. Just do what they say and you'll be fine.
  11. The biggest thing I would attribute to this is the difference in how Canadian provinces handle the situation. I'm American and spent the vast majority of my life in the US (California), but I can see right off the bat by looking into insurance providers in the past, to seeing posters here have no clue what to do, that the Canadian system sets people up for success a lot better. The ways this is done: - Introduce the patient into weight management program - Require 3 classes immediately concerning weight loss issues (psychological, physiological, and so on), spread a month apart - Require appointments with 3 gatekeepers, a case manager to manage appointments and to track issues and progress, a dietitian (RD) to cover nutritional needs, a psychologist to help with underlying issues that might prevent someone from progressing through WM, surgery or not. Once the arduous process of getting their approval takes place (which all depends on how receptive the patient is with the program), generally when they see progress after multiple meetings, you get passed down to others that will take care of any other underlying issues and assess you for surgery. - So that includes an internist, a doctor who specializes in adult conditions - A bariatric RN who assists the internist and is a conduit between the internist and the surgeon - The surgeons themselves Between the appointment with the internist and surgeon there is a pre-operative surgery class where you have a huge packet full of things to know, and how to handle your pre-operative diet, post-operative diet stages (clear fluids, liquid, soft solids, normal diet), and so on. Without the right foundation of support, and ensuring the patient has the right mindset going into surgery, it makes failure (and thus misery) a much higher possibility. There are Canadians, as you can see on this very forum, who still go to Mexico, primarily because they don't have the patience to go through their provinces program(s) to get the surgery done, if they even need it. I would hope that the Canadians that do this still go through the WM program or utilize their GP and find specialists in the bariatric/endocrinology/metabolism area just for the education and support foundation. Those that just jump right into surgery without being dead set and educated on what they're gonna go through are usually the ones that wind up failing the most. Going through the WM program we have here I'd say likely weeds out those who want the surgery but like many people here don't want to have the discipline to make life-long changes. If we take posters like @OutsideMatchInsideshe undoubtedly comes off as abrasive and uncompromising. However, I think this is the very attitude that one needs to have to get through this. For many of us, we go into this because of other issues, such as depression, head hunger, and especially comorbidities that, along with being fat, decrease both our enjoyment of life and our lifespan. Especially when it comes to psychological issues, having been down this road before (just not even remotely as bad as this time), I understand that you literally need an uncompromising life-and-death attitude. And while one doesn't need to go at it like you're a badass from the Die Hard films, when it comes to necessary changes like the things that occur especially in the early stages of post-op, there cannot be any doubt about what you're doing and if it's right. You should already know going into the surgery that this is the right thing or not. For example, I absolutely did not want to do or eat certain things but I knew that there was no questioning if I should or shouldn't if I want to make these changes.. I'm in the mentality that my health is above all, I want to live a normal life, where I can enjoy everything that comes with it, so I can watch my kids grow up and not be without a father like I spent much of my childhood. I think for those truly in the right mindset, they can piss and moan about what they're going through (they have every right to) but there should not be any questioning whatsoever if what they're doing is right. That to me is a red flag. To add as well: For the weight management program, I entered it in the Fall of 2015. When I started it, I was set out for the Lap-Band. There was no way in hell I wanted to have my stomach cut like they do in the sleeve. When I was diagnosed with the diabetes and liver problem, and told a RNY or VSG is the better options, I immediately went to the RNY. I was dead set on this all the way up until about December 2016. It was at that point my case manager recommended to consider the VSG with possible revision to bypass if any complications arise. I talked to my surgeon, who is a huge fan of RNY, but in my case, due to my comorbidities being under control, and my age, he recommended the VSG and likewise promised the option of revision if I wanted it, and especially if there were any complications. Not satisfied with the opinion with one surgeon, I got second opinions from two other surgeons, who all said virtually the same thing. So then I got down to researching, every day, for the next few weeks, before I gave my consent for the VSG (my surgeon told me to take my time). I absolutely grilled every surgeon I talked to questioning them about the difference and why they are talking about age as a justification, with them pointing out my medical issues did not justify the risk given, despite the high risk to me anyways given my very high blood pressure, high pulse, spiking hBA1c, and liver disease progressing to the point of being on the brink of cirrhosis if it progressed any more whatsoever, they were under control. To summarize, I can honestly say that the process itself gave me time to learn, understand and appreciate the tool I was going toward, and help emphasize the importance of life-long changes to diet, and the dreaded "portion control". I saw first hand how the stuff I was consuming was tearing my body apart. Especially of soda and carb-laden, sugary garbage foods, I had nearly a month of comedown effects due to how psychoactive a drug sugar is. By the time I went through this weight management program and was educated about things, and signed those VSG papers and handed them to my surgeon, I knew 100% what I was doing was right and from then on did everything possible to help make the toughest parts of the journey more tolerable.

Band to sleeve one surgery or two?

I have NEVER been able to eat any of that. I think if you are revising, looking to eat whatever you want then you are looking for trouble. I'm going into the sleeve with the same mindset of a lifestyle change forever. The only difference is that I will actually be able to eat healthy instead of whatever will go down.

Band to sleeve one surgery or two?

I'm kinda in the same boat.. I have been banded since 2010. I am revising to the sleeve in Mexico. He will do it in one surgery as long as my endoscopy shows no erosion. I have it next Tuesday. I am petrified that I will have to find a way to have my insurance cover the removal (since at that point it'll be deemed medically necessary) and then have to wait three months to get sleeved. I have been miserable for 7 years, I suppose a bit more time won't kill me. But I'm praying for it!!!

Why is everyone converting from band to sleeve?

I was banded in February of 2010. The first year I did really good. I was unable to eat most foods, but I was so determined to lose the weight that I just dealt with it. I lost almost 60 lbs and then slowly it just stopped coming off, and then the pounds came creeping back on. I have tried fills and unfills and no matter which way I go I either can't eat at all, can't get full, throw up nearly ever single day, sometimes even just water. Unless it's a slider food, I can't eat it. After spending the last 7 years of my life living with a failed LapBand I am getting a revision to a gastric sleeve.

  16. Hi Sara! I'm doing well. Tomorrow will be two weeks since my revision. I've lost 7 pounds, but I'm still retaining some fluid and swollen. I weigh 157 today. I'm not hungry. The soreness was pretty much gone after 6-7 days, and the part that seemed to linger the longest was the place where my port used to be. I'm having Gatorade Low Cal and creamed soups mostly, and I notice a difference than with the band. At two weeks with the band, I felt huge restriction, and I vomited quite a bit-slime and all. I feel full with the sleeve, but no urge to vomit-not "stuck" or over-full. I hope this doesn't mean I won't feel any kind of restriction when I graduate to regular foods. Any advice on that hermione53? My doctor recommended a protein powder, and I'm liking it so far. I can't get 60-80 grams any other way. It's called Genepro. There's some debate about it online because they claim to use some science to pack 30g of protein into 1 tbsp. My doctor says it's good. I add it to creamed soups, and I can't taste it. And only 1 small tbsp! How are you all doing?
  17. How many calories have you been told to eat at 3 weeks out? And what type of foods?? I'm stuck at the same weight now for 10 days...im post op sleeve revision to bypass. Frustrated.
  18. Hello everyone, I'm five months out after 17 years of banding. I am SO GLAD I made the switch. I won't bore you with my band and band revision journey. I will focus on how amazing having a sleeve is. It's the surgery I hoped I was getting 17 years ago! With the sleeve, I can drink my protein in the morning. No waiting hours for the mucus cap to dissolve. I can actually drink a good bit of water. I do not throw up. I only did once and that's because I ate too fast. Like it was said above, I don't feel like I'm being choked with food sitting at my esophagus. I am able to eat healthy foods (meat, salad, veggies). My head is in a better place because I had a wonderful two months or so of having NO interest in food. It gave me a great start/ restart. To answer some questions from above, I had my band removed first and then was sleeved 7 weeks later. I did gain weight in that time, but it wasn't a ton- five pounds? I thought it would be more, but I hadn't been feeling much restriction for years so... At first I was upset about the two procedures and thought about going with RNY because my surgeon would have done that it one. But, I found the waiting time fine and I'm glad I didn't do so much at once. I have no pain in the port area. The band removal surgery was very easy. I was in and out of the hospital in four hours with very little pain. If you have questions, just ask!

    Band to Sleeve Success?

I am also doing a revision to a sleeve. I am encouraged by these positive outcomes
  20. I  am currently pursuing a revision from Lapband to Sleeve. My surgery date is scheduled for July 14th with Dr. Gerardo Garcia Alvarez at Bariatric Mexico in Cabo. I am having an endoscopy done on Tuesday May 16th, and as long as everything checks out with my band internally they will do it in one surgery. I am scared that the scope will show erosion, and I’ll have to just have it removed, instead of the revision, because I can’t afford two trips to Mexico 

I have ZERO symptoms of lapband problems as far as pain/reflux issues. I just can’t eat anything without it coming back up. I am very much looking forward to getting off the yo you dieting, and joining the losers bench!

Would really love to hear other stories of revisions..

    3 months after VSG

Thanks! I didn't think about that. I had the lapband in 2007 and lost 72 pounds and then gained back 20 of it. I revised to VSG because my band was no longer working for me, was either too tight or not enough restriction. Without VSG I would never have gotten below 200! It's still a journey but I can see the end of the tunnel now!
  22. You can still use Tylenol after rny. It's just NSAIDS you won't be able to use and honestly a lot of the pain that you would need to take pain meds for will go away as you lose weight. My migraines were near daily events pre op and now it's down to a couple a month around the time my period shows up. My constant joint pain is gone and except for fevers, I don't even take Tylenol. The surgery will take away a lot of your discomfort and dependence on these things to get you through. It really depends on what you are comfortable with and what will be the best tool for you to lose weight and live the life you want to live. For me, rny was the way to go and if you have a substantial amount of weight to lose, you don't want to have to go back under the knife for revisions down the road. I wanted one and done and I am so glad I chose rny. It really helped me get to the cause of my obesity which was sugar addiction. By taking that variable out, I was able to get my mind around what I needed to do.

    Considering revision

I would definitely talk to your doctor about what may be the best option for you. I had. And slippage and revised to the sleeve. I did have some reflux related to the slipped band. Post revision, I have none but I think my issue was solely the band being slipped and not gerd.
