I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

My weight loss is also VERY slow 22lbs in the 3mth Post surgery sw was I've spent hours trawling through the Internet trying to workout the biochemistry/cellular physiology of what exactly happens during a stall ( I lost a few pounds over the first month but then stalled for 3 weeks) How can intake be 600 kcal and enough protein but no weight loss ... right !!! Measuring was the only thing that convinced me something was happening (7 inches from my waist and 1 inch from my hips!). OR maybe you could be on track for a Nobel prize for groundbreaking research on the revised laws of thermodynamics!!!!! How far out post op are you? And what was your surgery weight? ( it factors in as well) IT WILL IMPROVE . it has too! All the best

Weight loss in the first 2 months

Good point. I am much shorter, at 5'2", and a 39 lbs weight loss was a few sizes down down in my case.

Weight loss in the first 2 months

I'm exactly 8 weeks tomorrow. Down 32lbs since surgery + 7lbs pre-op for a total of 39lbs. Sounds like you are trying to guess how that dress will fit. I caution you to maybe have backup plans because in addition to the variable weight loss numbers, that weight loss will also look different on different people. At 5'9" and 38lbs lost, and I still wear the same size 14 pants and XL top, it just fits a lot better. Also "the girls" have deflated from a 40F to a 38DD. Hope that helps!
  4. I called the surgery center at the end of January and started making changes to my diet (giving up diet soda, reducing carbs, drinking 30 min after meals) right away. I had my first few visits with the surgery team in February and March and was losing weight the whole time, but now I have so long to wait... I won't be having surgery till at least August because of the required nutrition classes and backlogs due to COVID. I'm sick of cooking, sick of thinking about food and weight loss, and sick of waiting... not sure how to keep up momentum. It's fine when I'm busy at work, but when work is slow, I just can't think about anything else. I'm trying to keep myself busy, but I don't like TV most things here are still closed. I've been reading two or three books a week. I hurt my hip due to too much walking... How can I deal with this waiting???

I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

I had surgery on 2/4. I lost about 25 lbs right away then nothing. I got to 345 and stalled for 5 weeks. Now I'm at 339(ish) and stuck, again for 3+ weeks. My exercise is okay, I get about 30-45 min a day 4-5 days a week. I definitely eat less than 1000 calories a day, with (mostly) balanced macros. I keep my protein > 70 every day and fat and carbs seem to fluctuate a bit depending. Yesterday I ate pecans so my fat was high and carbs were low. Other days I'll eat a banana or apple and then my carbs go up. Regardless, I can't seem to lose any more weight and it's been almost 3 months since surgery. I was doing some googling and found articles on WLS non-responders or insufficient weight loss. Apparently what they don't tell you is that there are people who aren't successful metabolically. My doctor already said I should find a new way of defining success that isn't the scale. Like I should celebrate my increased exercise achievements. Have to say I find it hard to "celebrate" increased exercise stamina that doesn't come with dropping pounds. I wanted to fit my ass into an airplane seat and see Europe and not be a fat American. Looks like that isn't going to happen, though.
  6. My understanding was that this is related to PCOS. I'm not sure if weight loss alone will help if PCOS is still an issue.

    Menstruation after VSG

a lot of women have messed up menstrual cycles the first few weeks or months after surgery. It's supposedly due to the fat cells releasing estrogen during rapid weight loss. It'll eventually stabilize again. If you're worried, I'd call - but I'm guessing that's most likely what's going on. People post about that a lot.

    Hypothyroidism and gastric bypass surgery

I have hypothyroidism. Im on 75mg levothyroxine. I am 13 months post RNY. Im down 130 lbs. I lose about 7-11 pounds a month. First and 2nd months were biggest losses at 26 and 21 lbs but i was also not able to keep anything down due to strictures and had to have an EGD with balloon dilation to widen the opening to my pouch 3 mos post op. And then again a 2nd time at 5 months post op. Be careful with biotin supplements. They can cause false readings on your lab work. I was taken off of my levothyroxine as they stated my levels were perfect. Then months later they were sky high. I stopped taking biotin and got back on levothyroxine and levels were back on track pre surgery numbers. And it does nothing for preventing hair loss. If its going to thin out or fall out, thats what its gonna do. So get your protein and liquids in and that will help tremendously.

Body image issues worse after surgery

I totally understand. My HW was 325 (2/20/20). SW 311 (3/9/20) CW 195. I thought once I reach onederland, things would start to feel "normal". But they are far from it. I have to reach 180 before my plastics guy will schedule my panniculectomy. He's going to submit a breast reduction also. So fingers crossed it gets approved too. I had $ saved to get arms or TT or breasts (incase insurance doesnt cover) but my mom passed in october and well, family comes first. And the stimulus $ that did come, paid over due bills and rest to my Dad to help him with my mom's expenses. To make this already long story shortened, i cannot look at myself in a mirror. The sagging, hanging, wrinkling skin is horrible. I looked at my back and bottom with a mirror recently and omg, its worse than i imagined. I thought to myself, why did i look at that? ? My body image is so distorted more so now than when i was over 300 lbs. I refrain from wanting any type of physical contact because it makes me uncomfortable and i dont get dressed or undressed in front of anyone or a mirror. I dont even use a mirror to brush my hair! Its that bad.
  10. I had a lot of bruising too. I always bruised easily (I’m very fair so bruises were obvious) but I had a lot more. They also seemed to last a lot longer - sometimes weeks before they disappeared. I think some of it was from getting used to my new body shape & I was bumping into things like coffee tables & other furniture. Also less padding to protect my body from bumps. I was constantly kicking my toes against my kitchen cupboards until realised that my tummy used to hit the kitchen bench before my feet did so my tummy acted as a warning. Now my foot would hit the kick board before my tummy got to the bench. Crazy I know but true. But yes get some lab work done in case you are lacking in something. Joint pain can also occur from your changing body shape. Your changing weight distribution & weight loss may be putting stress on joints that are used to working at different angles to carry your weight before & are now straightening or changing for where you carry your weight now. Are you standing differently? Do you walk differently? Are you more active? I had upper back pain until I realised my bras were way too big & weren’t offering adequate support. Bought new underwear & no more back pain. I also noticed I was slouching because that was obviously how my body held itself when I was big - my weight was pulling me forward. I had to retrain my body to stand straight again.

As @catwoman7 said there is always a risk of complications, and each of us is so different that while I might have had gas, you might have very little. I think the best thing you can do is educate yourself on the possibilities so that you're prepared. If you do have bad gas pain, what are the remedies that people suggest? If you have hair loss, what can you do? (Not much BTW except wait it out) If you can't drink cold water, what do other people suggest? I learned so much from lurking around on these boards, that I felt really prepared for anything - including the inevitable stall. Good luck!!!

Weight loss in the first 2 months

The first two months were exceptions...it all really averages out in the end! From months 3-7, my monthly average loss was ~11lbs (lost from a high of 13lb/month to a low of 9lbs/month, depending on the month) I get how we sometimes fixate on the speed of loss (I mean, there IS a bit of thrill in getting closer to goal, I'm not denying that), but really, for those that stay on their respective plans, we all end up at the same place eventually. Does it really matter if it takes 6 months or 2 years? Its a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. Good Luck! ❤️, sounds like you'll do great.

Foods and supplements for major constipation

Everything you’re telling me lines up with all the googling, pre op classes, and reading I’ve done. When I looked up pantoprazole it states that constipation is a possible side effect yet my Dr has not agreed to try a different acid blocker even though I’ve asked several times. I really appreciate your response because I was starting to feel like I’m going crazy. I kept telling him “I feel drained, like I drink and drink and drink but feel so dry” and he doesn’t listen when I say it isn’t my water or diet. I am super regimented and have had amazing results with my post op weight loss and energy gain m, however my body does not behave the way it used to. All the vitamins and supps confuse it. I’m only 8 months out so I am trying to be patient but it is hard when dr’s don’t listen and my body is sending messages loud and clear. Sorry for getting ranty, I didn’t sleep a wink due to bum swelling and discomfort after the milk of magnesia kicked in. Any suggestions for an OTC acid reducer I can suggest to my surgeon? I know he’ll want me on one until at least a year out because I’d had an ulcer due to a stomach opening structure that had to be surgically corrected at 3 months post op. Thanks in advance!
  14. Oh, I stress bake too (and happy bake, and boredom bake)...and yeah, I give the majority of it away. Delivering goodies to friends and family is actually one of the highlights of my week. But...I get if having the temptation is just not worth you dealing with. Do stuff that makes things easier, and not harder, I like to say. P.S. I'm assuming you are just talking about the perishable supplies being given away? Most baking ingredients have a relatively long-ish shelf life. They could probably keep until you are done with weight loss phase? Or you could have one last big bake to use it all up in one go! Hope you figure out (and be at peace with) what is best for you ❤️

    100 lbs!

WOW! That is awesome Dude! I m not sure I can lose 100 in 6 months but I DO know I can lose 100 lbs with the sleeve. I m down 45 lbs. Surgery was 2/23/21. That weight loss include a month of dieting pre surgery. I have gone from 2XL shirt to XL which is a big del. What about shirt sizes? Where did you start and what are you wearing now? Congrats again!

    New Life Questions

as with any surgery, there's always a risk of complications, but most are minor and "fixable", and many of us don't experience complications at all. there's not much you can do about hair loss. It can happen after any major surgery - or even giving birth - but it seems to be more common with bariatric surgery because in addition to the shock to your body from the surgery, you're also taking in very few calories afterward. Keeping on top of your protein and vitamins may help it from getting any worse than it is, but you still might lose hair. Most of us do (not all - but most), but for the majority, we're the only ones who notice it. I had some hair loss during months 5-8, but it was just light shedding, so no one would have noticed it. Hair coming out in big, noticeable clumps isn't very common. anxiety before surgery is very common - I kind of freak out before any surgery. But I'm sure you'll do fine!!

    New Life Questions

if you stick to what the dr says exactly, is there any complications? extra gas? more hair falling out? ect. Im getting labs this week and hopefully my date for May, and its just now starting to sink in all the changes that i have to make, which i know os for the better. anxiety is getting to me i suppose. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. Resistance training worked for me. I used Pilates ring. Made huge difference in my 135 weight loss.
  19. Ha! I'm not either.😃 She said the IUD is both hormonal and structural so it counts as the 2 forms. Another 2 form would be the pill with a condom or spermicidal lubricant. She said some choose more permanent methods like vasectomy or get tubes tied at the time of weight loss surgery. Depending on which way you go, it could be either not a big deal or a major decision. I'm not sure what I'll do yet.

Weight loss in the first 2 months

rate of weight loss is so different between people depending on so many factors that I don't know that any of this will really help you, since you don't know if you'll be a faster or slower loser, BUT... I lost 16 lbs in month 1 and 12 lbs in month 2. So 28 lbs altogether.
  21. Good afternoon! Quick question....about how much weight did you lose in the first 2 months post surgery? I have an important event that I bought a dress for. Thank you for your time!
  22. After about ten years of not seeing the scale go down, Post Surgery I can see the scale go down and down and I can't believe it! This is shocking to me as for the past ten years it has been slowly going up and up. I had been thinking about surgery for around ten years and went through two programs completing them only to back down, then on the third program finally I was ready. I think what pushed me was that I was in it heart and soul basically mentally and physically ready for the whole process. I had great fear and so I knew it is fear because I am not taking it serious and doing what they are asking me to do. there are so many steps and even once you pass them your mind has to agree and believe it and you have to have a sense of confidence. something I did not have the first two tries. The scale going down is your reward in the end because now I know I am on my way to a healthier happier life!

    Light headness

You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s quite a common experience after weight loss surgery. it’s just scary if you’ve never experienced it before. Like @Jaelzion I still suffer from postural or orthostatic hypotension but I’ve always had a tendency towards low blood pressure & experienced this before. I always had more attacks when I was slimmer than when I was carrying weight but I do suffer from more episodes now - several times a day vs a couple of times a month (more in Spring & autumn). Up until a couple of months ago, it happened every time I got up now it’s probably 3/4 of the time so it has improved. I too look for something I can touch (wall, chair, another person) to ‘ground’ myself for those couple of seconds. Sometimes I bend over especially if there’s more severe vision loss & dizziness just to get the blood back to my head. My GP put me on some meds but they did nothing. I added extra salt, waited before standing, wriggled my feet & toes before standing but nothing helped. I look at it as something that’s just me now especially as it was a pre existing condition just amplified.
  24. Oh man, I'm so sorry that anxiety is sitting with you right now - it stinks. I too have heard that mood swings can be part of the early stage post-surgery for a variety of reasons, including hormonal fluctuation, sleep disturbance, or loss of food as a comfort and coping tool. During my pre-surgery phase, I got more aware of how I have used food to manage and numb anxiety. Post-surgery, as my hunger/food desire has started to return I've had some unpleasant reminders of this old habit. I also really and truly get having fear around moving from one food stage to the next. with each food stage "graduation" I have been so afraid of what might happen. Go figure that by following my program I have been fine. Like catwomen said complications are rare, and even rarer if you're following the recommendations of a reputable program. Not to go into advice mode too much, and knowing our experiences might be different (maybe you are having panic attacks rather than generalized anxiety?), I will say that I have found therapy to be a big help. With my therapist I know I can unload my anxious build-up. saying my fears out loud to someone else helps me put them in perspective. Therapy also gives me a non-food outlet that instead of numbing helps me identify what might be contributing to anxiousness and give it less power by helping me to put it in perspective. Not all therapists are skilled, so it can take some shopping around, but might be worth it.

    6-week update

Glad to hear you are on the mend and able to get food in without issues. I had VSG on 2/23, so far I've lost 45 pounds. I recently moved to soft foods which seems like the wild west of foods to me since there is so many more options. So far I had my first stall this month which has messed with my head a bit, but I'm hanging in there trusting that sticking strictly to my program will keep the weight loss coming. I'm getting antsy to get some new clothes (and will need new bras soon - the girls are going!) but want to wait until I lose another 15 pounds or so.
