    Feeling down

@@ylluz - I was losing slower than the norm and felt the same way with my doctor. I am currently -98lbs and have been trying to get back on track for last week or so. As the others said - if you are losing - no matter how slow - ITS LOSING!!! Even a gain of a pound or so is OK - stay the course. If you get off (like I have done) get back on!!! we got this!

    bbq

I agree. My place of employment held a BBQ 3-4 weeks after my surgery. I was still on soft foods. I had BBQ ribs and chicken. Passed on everything else. The ribs were super soft so I chewed them really good and just kind of played with the chicken to make it look like I was eating it!

    Think I pulled something

Yep, expereienced right after surger when I bent down. I'm pretty sure you just pulled on your port area. Just take it easy for a week or so, you'll heal in no time. Contratulations on getting the band!
  4. I had my surgery last week and had staples removed today. The asked if I've had any problems with acid reflux or heartburn and I haven't but I've read on here were a lot of people do experience it. The nurse then asked if I was taking my prilosec and I had completely forgot, as soon as I got home I took my first dose, an hour later I had the worst case of heartburn and stomach bubble...this is very strange to me. Other than this little issue everything else has been going great and I've lost 22 lbs:)

    Complete this sentence...

I would have prepared my head because my band took care of my stomach. You give up food volume with the band. I have went to about a 8 month funeral for food volume in my head. Just this week (8 1/2 months from surgery) I can honestly say in my "head" I feel like "so what" to food in volume. I guess it was sort of easy because I don't really have a choice. I guess I could have it removed and gain back my weight plus more. I could tell I wasn't going to stop at my highest of 276 lbs. Having it removed would be like having a limb removed . edie
  6. It's now come to this: after months of nutrition classes, doctors appointments, and a psychiatric evaluation, I will be having a sleeve gastrectomy tomorrow. As I sit writing this I am both excited and a little nervous. I know what it's like to be put to sleep because I had my tonsils and adenoids taken out when I was seven, but still, this is major surgery and I've not surgery for a long time. I'm having this done at a young age (I'm 19) because I have a bad family history when it comes to heart problems, blood pressure, diabetes, and so on. I'd like to avoid all that. I also don't know what it's like to be thin, so that prospect alone excites me about having the surgery. As of today, I have lost 133 pounds pre-op, but I want to lose about 140 more or so (the BMI calculator says I should be 150-160). The hospital I'm going to is very nice and I have a great surgeon and nutritionist. I do have to stay for two nights, but that's ok, though I kinda wish I could go home the same day. I hope I get a private room. My surgery is scheduled for 7AM and I'm the first of three surgeries my surgeon is doing that day - one sleeve and two bypasses. He told me he's done seven sleeves, so I'll be his eighth. This doesn't scare me though, as he's done countless bands and bypasses, as well as many revisions (he told me he had recently worked on a woman who had her stomach stapled back in the 1980's). He did tell me he had leaks in two but that was because he was using a different type of staple. The hospital has wi-fi and will let me have my cellphone so I won't be disconnected from the world. I've read so much on this site and know what to expect, so I'm ready. I'm hoping my age and the fact I've been exercising for several months keeps the pain and soreness at a minimum. You guys are great, I love this site, I'll try to post more, and look for me in the chatroom that night, as I'll try to be in it (if I'm not too out of it!) Well, I think it's time for this train to load up and await his departure for a whole new station

8 weeks out need some advice

I am similar. I'm not sure that I could handle a 10oz meal but I do avoid carbs 90% of the time. I have moments, sometimes even a day where I am not as restricted as I should have been but I have never struggled. I have consistently lost and had no plateaus so I just try really hard. I am 6 weeks out today. I make myself stop at 3oz of meat even though I probably could do another ounce. I don't eat any fruits, even though they are on my list because I can't restrict myself enough. I'm allowed crackers.... I can eat a lot of those. I mean even my bad days were a good day in my past but I just make myself stop. Maybe the Lean Cuisines are more of a slider and just kinda go thru. Maybe find an alternative?

    Surprise Hiatal Hernia

I had my surgery on Monday (30th) and I also had a large hiatal hernia. Didn't know about it before hand. Though I did have pretty bad reflux, and periodic inability to swallow certain foods. (shouda guessed!). I was VERY sick the first 24 hours. I would get violently nauseous and threw up even 1-2 ice chips. The edema in my stomach was preventing any fluids from moving through. After some lasix and steroids, that helped a lot. I had to stay an extra day and came home Wednesday. I'm trying to get my liquids in, but not meeting goals yet. Water hurts to drink. I'm drinking my Isopure (nasty), Gatorade, broth, etc. I have quite a bit of pain at my incision sites, especially the far right one. I'm slow getting up and moving around. I'm slow drinking. Yesterday I had some beef broth and it tasted good, but I think I had too much at a time (was sipping with a spoon) and my stomach hurt and felt water logged. I walked around some to try to get it moving. I get very tired very easily. Taking a shower wears me out. I have a 6 yo and 2,.5 yo and luckily my husband has been home with them this week. I'm hoping by next week my energy levels will be up.

    Diabetes Medication?

Go Kathy! I went an had blood work and my A1c was 6.0 the first time, then I got dehydrated and my A1c had increased to 6.3. WTH? I had been eating a few small candies (mini bars for about 1 Week). So now I try to avoid the sweets. Or maybe it had increased because I stressed my body out by being dehydrated. Not sure. Does anyone know if G2 Gatorade can raise our blood sugar? I need to research this.

    Fill Or No Fill

If it were me I'd say no fill. When I'm tight (like right now) I can't eat most meats, ground turkey is the exception. But a lot can change in a few weeks, especially in the beginning (i assume you're in the beginning since your ticker is at 11 pounds down). I'd call your dr and ask if you can schedule an appointment and possibly cancel it with 2-3 days notice, just incase you don't end up needing a fill. I know my drs office permits this as long as I call about 4 days before the appointment.

    Oct 29th check in

I had a loss of 1.6 lbs this week - seems so slow - but got to 199.8 this morning. Hope it picks up a little faster as I've had just 1-2 lbs lost per week.

    Oct 29th check in

Hi guys! I am better this week, recovering well I think. Had a loss of 5 lbs over the last 2 weeks since I last officially weighed in. Down to 170.6. Getting there! I am able to eat more since my surgery last Friday, it would seem the abscess/infection really was causing my body alot of issues. I am sure hoping my sleeved life is on the upswing now!

    Wondering if this is normal?

I paid privately (in Belgium) and literally had one visit with the surgeon (lasted about 10 minutes) and one meeting with a dietician (lasted about 5 minutes). And that’s it. Choose which surgery I would want and picked a surgery date. Since I had quite a low starting BMI (35.5), I didn’t have to do another appointment with the dietician. Other people had to record their eating for a week and discuss that with the dietician. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Leading up to the surgery I also had to do some bloodwork through my GP. But that’s it. Got a leaflet explaining the pre-op diet and that’s it. 😅 I already knew everything I needed to know since I did lots of research myself, so I didn’t really mind all of this, but it did seem quite weird to me, compared to the hoops people have to jump through for insurance. One advantage of being self payed was that at my hospital they always do the self-pay patients first, so I was actually first of the day and done by 9 in the morning. 👍🏻

    Wondering if this is normal?

Nearly all of my stuff was in the two weeks prior to surgery, so don't fret. I had: - clearance from a psychologue - EKG - one meeting with a dietitian - one support group meeting - blood tests - final clearance from my normal family doctor

    Hunger pains

I was banded on 3/30/09. After 2 weeks, I was on soft foods, now normal foods. Seems like a long time to be on liquids. Ask your nutrionist would be able to determine if you were ready for soft/mushie foods. Good luck!
  19. It seems like everything is coming up so fast. I attended the seminar 3rd week of October this year, the ff week I had my consultation , 2 days after I had my endoscopy, and that same week, I met with my nutritionist. I also had my psych evaluation a week after that. I waited two weeks for the approval. I remember calling the doctor's office regarding pre-cert results almost every day. Then 2 days ago I got my surgery date which is on 11/13. I have a week of liquid diet before the surgery. Now I feel the excitement, apprehension and so much more. I have 5 kids & they are 7 yrs old & younger. I hope the surgery would work for me with no complications. I don't know if Im scared or excited , now that it's going to be less than a week to my surgery . I would just like to know if there's anybody there who went through the same experience. How did you cope up with this many kids after the surgery? I used to eat kids food like chiken nuggets, pizza, mac & cheese, fruit cups etc. we also love to go to buffet or all you can eat restaurants. Is it going to affect my kids nutrition as well? How did you take care of your little kiddos during this time? I also love to drink coffee. Did you drink coffee and eat yogurt during pre-surgery liquid diet? Please I need your advise. Thanks much. :-)

    Confused

Oh, Patiencemom, You Are Doing So Great With Your Weightloss. Honestly, Sometimes Cardio Exercise, Doing Alot Like You're Doing Can Actually Slow Down Your Metabolism To The Point Where U Don't Lose Like You Would Like. Also, just Consider The Amount Of Calories That You Are Taking In. Most Of Them Is Being Used Up By The Exercise Youre Doing. One Last Point, Maybe You Should Think About Doing Say 30-40 Mins Of Cardio. Each Time And Incorparating Some Strength Training Say 3-4 Days Per Week. The Strentgh Training Will Not Cause Bulk, It Helps With The Weight Loss And Will Give You A Nice Physique, Lighter Weights Definitely At First.

    Somebody Stop Me!

Cat - I completely know where you are coming from. I have finally reigned myself in a bit. I went back on my no flour no sugar diet during the week and at this point take weekends and holidays off. I thought it would be hard getting back on track on Mondays with taking the weekends off, but so far not the case. I have lost 7 pounds in the last few weeks. Of course this is mostly water, as I always lose a lot of water when I start a new eating plan. Not sure what the next month will bring. I hope to continue to stay in control.
  23. Yes i have read a thousand posts on the commonality of stalls. I started my journey on aug 13 th and surgery was on aug 27th. I am down a total of 23 lbs of which 9 have been post surgery. I am at 235.5...235.5....235.5....235.5....235.5....235.5 i am going to pull my hair out. I put the scale away...but that only lasted for a day. I am using fitness pal and getting right around 800 cal a day, i started walking a little but still to afraid and weak to work up a sweat. If this stall doesnt break soon....i just might! UGH!!!!!!!!!!

    Cardio -vs- weight training

I have been working with a personal trainer 3 days a week and here is what we do on those days... 30 minutes of strength training (weights) then 30 minutes cardio. She/he (I work with a woman 2 days and a guy one day) both said always do weights first - and it I can only get one thing in to make it the weights because you burn more calories and tone more by the strength training. But I think it really depends on your goals -and the most important thing is that you just get to the gym and exercize! Here is a good short article on this topic... My link
  25. I still have over half of what they prescribed me. I don't like pain pills though and sleeping all the time was worse for me than the discomfort. I took them until about day 3 out of the hospital. Then occasionally for the next week.
