    Alcohol

I'm almost 1 month post op, so I'm just out the gate. I used to LOVE wine, but I've been a good girl and have had nada. I am a bridesmaid in an upcoming wedding and I REALLY want to imbue. Be honest. How have you dealt with alcohol? I don't want to go bananas and drink all night, but I'd sure like a glass of wine at the bachelorette party (this Sat) and one at the wedding (June 4). Go for it? One or the other? Avoid? Do you drink? Please put in your 2 cents.

    Alcohol after WLS

Hmmm... I didn't think about that. On first pass I'd think that, as bypass patients are missing the beginning of their small intestine, they'd absorb less alcohol, as the majority of absorption happens in the upper small intestine. However, I'll need to read and look more (Yes, I am a nerd, and formerly a scientist, so I like this stuff! It's keeping me busy while I sip and recuperate from sleeve surgery on 9/15!)
  3. Hello I am new to this forum i have my gastric sleeve surgery on March 6th and honestly I am freaking out a little I am 5 11 and at my highest was 385 since deciding to do surgery I have lost over 35 pounds and hope to take more weight off prior to surgery with the pre op liquid. Long term goal is 220 i went to pre op education course yesterday so I am clear on everything to do for the next week and the weeks following My questions revolve around several items is two weeks post surgery realistic to go back to work . I work in finance so desk job i understand the need to strictly follow the post surgery liquid diets etc but when you get to 6 months are you pretty much able to eat most foods ( recognizing that focusing on protein and fewer carbs will be key for the weight loss ) How common is vomiting post surgery 6 months and I assume it is just over eating is the main cause and how sensitive is your stomach ( ie I have 6 ozs of meat instead of 4 am I throwing up) the thought of vomiting a lot obviously is not pleasant . I know Alcohol is discouraged but safe to assume that for special occasions one or two drinks will be fine ( once again 6 plus months out post survey ) i am excited to do this a get to a healthier life just probably now just processing how much change there will be to my life thanks so much for any feedback

    Ice cream

I don't really consider it cheating if I have a really small scoop of carb smart ice cream and then stop at that. You will need to decide if you can handle just something small like that. It really depends if you have an eating disorder (binge, addiction) or not. I got sugar free popsicles and eat them daily. I also got some sugar free candies and limit myself to 2 a day because the sugar alcohol can cause stomach discomfort. I had to completely cut off any kind of regular candy - chocolate was my nemesis. I won't eat that again. Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 198 GW 135

    Alcohol

I think it'd be okay, but they warn you that your sensitivity to alcohol will be much greater/you'll get drunker quicker, so be careful.

    Flu and 7up

OK, long time ago and long story, but I got alcohol poisoning in college, called the poison control hotline and they said to sip on the juice from a can of peaches or pears (packed in 100% juice, not syrup). After three days of vomiting non-stop it's the only thing that helped the nausea subside. It's not carbonated either, might be worth a try...
  7. Thanks so much for your reply. I'm very very nervous about all of this. When my surgeon removes my band, depending on the scarring in my stomach, will then decide if Sleeve or Gastric Bypass will be best suited to me moving forward. By the time I am set to travel, I would be 5.5 weeks post op, so think I am on normal foods at that stage. What I am most concerned about is the effect that having too much food has on your new stomach. With my band - I get a funny feeling and just know I need to find a bathroom. NOt sure of what the experience is like if you have a little too much with a sleeve or GBP? We will be sitting on a beach in Thailand, so also hoping I am allowed to have an alcoholic beverage by that stage too?
  8. I can tell you that when I eat too much it hurts. I have never had to run to a restroom or been sick, but you do get really full fast. I have still not had any alcohol and I am now at 9 weeks post sleeve. My nutritionist said wait 6 mos to a year, I am sure you will do great
  9. I just confirmed a week's vacation with my hubby, son and daughter to spend Thanksgiving on the beach this year. This will be unusual for me as I usually host the big family dinner with 30 plus people and enough food to feed 60 which results in a 4 day feeding frenzy. I'm glad we're doing something a little less traditional this year as I hope to break some of my Holiday habits...gaining 5-10 pounds. What do I plan to do in Daytona? Swim, walk the beach, ride bicyles, dancing at night clubs, Christmas shopping, anything that requires me to be active. My goal will be to burn off any daily calories that are not necessary (ice cream, alcohol) and continure to lose weight while I'm there. I have approximately 130 days to get my body ready for a skimpy swimsuit. Will I be a size 8? No.... But I'll look damn good in a size 12! P.S. I have officially walked 100 miles since the first week in June and have ridden 48 miles on my bike. I feel so much stronger than I did 2 months ago.

Pizza Ordered! Ready For My Pina Colada!

You stated that you had already had your protein shake for the evening...Do you only drink one protein shake a day? How many grams or protein are you taking in? The minimum requirement is 60 gms/day but you can have more. 60-80 gms is the basic for women. It is what makes you feel full. As for the alcohol...I would steer clear. I do occasionally have a glass of wine, but I didn't try it until I was almost a year out.

Pizza Ordered! Ready For My Pina Colada!

Who said you can't have alcohol after being banded? I've been banded for almost 3 yrs now and enjoy an occasional glass of wine or margarita. You just have to watch the calories. There's nothing about the band that would preclude alcohol. Except that it lowers your inhibitiions on eating crap! Enjoy one in a while! Marci

Pizza Ordered! Ready For My Pina Colada!

I had been struggling to get enough protein in, but I'm doing better now. I am on mushies now, so I'm enjoying being able to have other choices for my protein. I'm never going to have alcohol again. I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my success/health. I wasn't sure if you were referring to my pina colda sugar-free popsicle comment, or the reply. Today was a great day! I felt good all day.

    Wine

Shoudn't be any issue, you didn't mention how far along you are but anything after a few weeks should be OK. Just be careful of the calories as wine and other alcohol is pretty high in cals. About a year ago I started drinking 3 oz of red wine each night before sleep. It helps me to sleep and it supposidly has healh benefits for cancer prevention and cholesterol reduction. Something besides general diet is working in that respect as my last months check revealed my cholesterol was 133, pretty rediculously low! I didn't realize how much I HATE the taste of alcohol though, it really turns me off, so no danger of over induging here!

    TINY little cheat

I totally agree with all of the above....don't sweat it. I cheated a little to (in fact I drank alcohol both Saturdays before the surgery and was told none was allowed) we're not expected to be 100% perfect. You're doing great!!

    HELP! i'm concerned!

I was sleeved on the 9th also and the only problems I've had are with a little diarrhea. I've been told the sugar alcohols in sugar free fudgecicles and Popsicles can give you diarrhea. You may be eating too fast or your sips need to be slower. I had to be really careful at first now I can take bigger sips.I haven't had any nausea

    Alcohol?

if you wouldn't rub alcohol on an external wound this early, then you should probably not rub it on an internal wound this early. I personally think you'll regret it this soon out.
  17. HW 333 LW 170 CW 220 Surgery date was 6/2000 i am 21 yrs out and a daily exerciser. My step are always over 10k a day. Very active. My pouch has stretched for sure. In July 2020 I had a stomach ablation done where they go down the throat and zap the pouch to try to create some scar tissue to try to shrink the pouch to give you a feeling of fullness as if he just had surgery. I was on liquids for two weeks and lost 12 pounds. I went crazy not having solid foods. I’ve gained six of those pounds back over the holidays. I’m currently sitting in about 221 I want to be at least 180. My biggest challenge is I can’t seem to stick to any food plan. After the ablation the doctor had me doing 800 g of fruits and vegetables a day. No he’s a gastroenterologist and he supposed to know that we are to eat protein first. He disagrees. I’m in a major metro of San Diego so it’s not like he’s a fly-by-night doctor. About 10 years ago I had a metabolism study done at Scripps hospital in la Jolla and they said metabolism had really slowed and my resting metabolism was about 1486 cal a day. I’m not sure what that equates to but they said I should eat under 1200 cal a day. I’m just really struggling getting this weight off I keep starting the five day restart pouch thing and then I’ll eat pizza… Chocolate seems to be in the mix every night. I am extremely frustrated and can’t seem to get any of this weight off on my own. About five years out from my by pass I turned alcohol and became an alcoholic. That was crazy! I am 8 yrs sober and 59 yrs old! Help please! I wish I could get the surgery all over again !
  18. Rubbing alcohol works decent enough. My doctor sent me home with a packet of adhesive remover, try asking to see if they can spare some because this is what works best as it was made for this.
  19. So before I ask this question, let me just say "Yes, I am aware of the empty calories and this should not be a habit." Is there any other reason besides the calories as to why you should not drink alcohol? I am young, I want to be able to go out and enjoy a drink or two with my friends occasionally. With that being said I usually only go out about 5 times a year. Thoughts??

    Am I Being Sensitive

In the end, it's about two things... (1) your own head, and (2) the arrangement you make with those around you. Regarding #1 -- You can "flip the switch" in your own head to turn off all the food noise around you. You just have to find the switch!! Many of us have no problems with people eating around us, because we were very focused on what we were doing and why. I'm not saying you SHOULD be in that place, I'm just saying that if you can find a way to get to that place, the journey will be a little easier... Easier said than done I know!! Regarding #2 -- You and your husband need to talk about what support you need. And he has to agree to it. If you ask him not to eat in front of you and he agrees, and then does it anyway, he's a big old jerk and you have a right to be angry. But if he's not signing up for that, then you guys have to negotiate for what he will agree to do... In my house, I don't care what my husband eats in front of me. However, I've asked that we remove the alcohol from the house. I love to drink. And before surgery, we used to have a drink or two every night before bed... I don't want to give up drinking entirely, and I really don't think I can be trusted to only drink "sometimes" or "in moderation" if he's going to drink every night in front of me at home. So I've decided to try drinking only when I'm out, in a social situation... Is that totally fair to him? Not if he is resentful or angry about it... But sure, it's totally fair if he's happy to support me and agrees to do it. As it turns out we had a big fight one night because (during pre-op phase) he snuck booze into his juice and I caught him. I flipped out (more that he was sneaking it) and basically told him that I refused to be his mother, and that if he's so dead set on drinking regardless of the impact on me, he should just pull all the alcohol back in the house and act like an adult and make the decision that he didn't want to support me... I'm a big girl, I can deal with being told no, but don't pretend to be supportive and then make me the bad guy when I find out that he's lying about it... Grrr... Anyway. Point being that I understand what you're going through, but it is YOUR journey... Your family will hopefully help, but it's not actually their journey...
  21. But mostly food protein not getting enought. Just feeling tired,,,, Know I shouldn't take Tylenol pm or lunesta. During the day,,,, But I've always escaped towards sleep,,,, Luckily no alcohol. I need a kick in the ass for out side and gym activities

    Vacation after surgery

You don't worry about making the right choices, you just do it. You didn't have this surgery to continue on the path you were going down, you had it in order to take the oath you're on now...a healthier way of eating and living. You make food choices just the way you do every day like you have been. Just because you go on vacation doesn't mean you have to stop making those choices. In this day and age, there's something for everyone everywhere and if you're that concerned about making wrong choices, take things with you, such as Prepackaged Protein bars, low-carb, high protein pre-made slimfast drinks that can be poured over ice, and if you feel like you can splurge on an alcoholic drink, that's up to you. You could always just get sparkling Water with fresh lemon and a cherry if it'll make you feel like you're part of the crowd. I mean, why would you even ask the questions you asked? You know what you have to do to stay in track. You either choose to do it or you choose not to do it. Simple as that!

Will I ever get to goal?

Babs, I completely understand. I have only 20 or so to go and I find myself sabotaging myself. Like you with the tortilla chips, for me it will me popcorn and my newest favorite -- Cheetos. What is wrong with me. Why did buy them and bring them home. Why did I just go do an hour of pilates, come home, make an alcoholic beverage for myself and eat Cheetos. I haven't gained but no wonder I'm not losing. I'm finding myself going back to my comfort foods and I don't like myself. Breakfast and lunch is not a problem at all. Usually yogurt for BF and egg/tuna/chicken salad at lunch. I'm getting in even Protein. But why am I sabotaging myself at dinner? I know why. I don't want to make dinner and why just for me because hubby is at a meeting, or ate all the leftovers before I got home. My son works evenings so it isn't like I need to cook for him. So, I make a drink, plop at the counter and eat cheetos and read the newspaper. And I DO have quick easy frozen meals or other good stuff at home. If we go out to dinner I'm OK, but don't leave me at home alone. Maybe if you and I become accountable for each other, we can both reach our goals. I'm game if you are. Evening check each day over the phone or whatever. I need someone to keep me in check. Maybe Michelle (even though she is still losing) and Vera can join us too and we are all so close to goal. You've done wonderful and there is a light at the end of the tunnel!!
