Solids After Surgery
A New New Dawn replied to Kiro's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To add to all the other great posts above, the post op diet is for proper recovery. You can cause your band to slip or not be positioned correctly by eating solids too soon. It takes weeks for the recovery process and when you are eating solid and heavy foods you are putting extra pressure on your stoma (the band, sutures, etc) and can cause harm. It is sooooo important to listen to your surgeon's instructions. Also, mushy foods can be greek yogurt (high protein), scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and blenderized meals. I made my normal meals for my family and put my 3-4 ounces of meat in the blender with chicken broth or a sauce of some sort and while it may not have looked good, it tasted fine. Those are just some ideas for Protein. Note that it is very important to eat protein first as it will keep you satiated. Sorry if the replies seem harsh but by not following your post-op instructions you could be jeopardizing your health, recovery and success with the band. You will get through this - we all did! Best of luck to you. -
Activa yogurt, the fiber gummies, and a stool softener will help work to keep you regular

CHELL posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 5 wks post op n find that I'm actually hungry every couple of hrs. When I am I'm not able to eat very much and am still on soft cheese, soft fish, yogurt, eggs, etc. Is this normal or should I b worried that I'm feeling hunger so frequently. I'll add that I'm sure it's not head hunger or acid. It's actual hunger. -
Soft Food Stage Here I Come! 6 Weeks On Monday! What Too Eat?
Chimera replied to jennrus's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first meal was a one egg omelette with sharp cheese - think I made it through about 1/4th of it and was stuffed to the gils and in heaven lol. Ate lots of eggs, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, refried beans, chicken, tuna, and eggs salad - chopped very fine. chicken in the crock pot is nice as it stays very moist. another favorite is a slice of avocado wrapped in a bit of deli turkey - delish! Sometimes when I get tired of eating the same old thing I will pick up some lean cuisines or Smart ones frozen dinners (only the ones with meat and vegetables - i dont do rice, pasta, or much in the way of potatoes during this phase of my life - maybe when i get to goal) One of those dinners can last me 3-4 meals dpeneding on what it is. Same thing with a can of refired beans - 4-5 meals. I loooove soup but it can be a bit sliderish for me - as can the beans once I got onto dense solids. The three turkey meatball dinner (add salsa or condiment of your choice) leaves me packed to the gills. I still do protein soups, shakes - love string cheese and bonbels - we go through a lot of those around our house, and canadian bacon. -
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that is fantasizing about when I am finally able to puree some food! I had surgery on Oct 2, so I'm still only on full liquids, including cream based soups made with milk, cream of wheat and plain yogurt. Yesterday was my husband & my 10th wedding anniversary, and normally we would have went out for a nice dinner together. I was having a really hard time figuring out what to do, so we went to Target, and walked around for a while, came home and that was it. How sad is that?? lol I know eventually we'll be able to go out to dinner again, and this stage is only temporary. But you're right, I too am finding out just what a mental battle this really is. I knew it would be tough ,but didn't quite envision it being quite this difficult. I'm just trying to take it day by day, sometimes hour by hour, constantly reminding myself why I chose this way to go, and what life will be like once I really start noticing the weight loss, and how much better off I'll be. For anyone who likes to judge WLS and think it's taking the "Easy way out", I would beg to differ! This is such a battle, but I know it will get better. Good luck to you!!

Having a hard time getting my fluids in also after I drink my tummy gets a little hurt... Tomorrow I start milk, yogurt, etc! Hopefully, I can tolerate it well. -
What is your go to food when you're out and forgot to bring?
swimbikerun replied to teacherlady2133's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Just be careful on Yogurt. It can be sugar or calorie laden. The other is that should you get dairy issues after surgery (I could drink a cow dry before {sigh}) you might want to get smaller containers or split them up. -

There are lots of great options out there. I was more than happy to ladle out broth when I needed to. Panera and other restaurants will be glad to do it, too. Most customers want the opposite, so they will happily give you a cup of broth. Squeezable apple sauces are good, single serve hummus cups (sans the crackers) or cream cheese with a spoon are fabulous. My NUT also recommended KFC's mashed potatoes and gravy on puree because they have no lumps. I love my Wawa (gas station and convenience store) for Jerky, string cheese, fruit cups, hard boiled eggs, almonds, yogurt tubes... Don't forget the deli at your grocery, too! They are happy (well, maybe not, but I don't care) to slice one or two cuts of deli meat or cheese. I often have them cut me a bit of roast beef and horseradish cheddar, grab a few olives off the olive bar, and have a great lunch for under $2. The salad bar always has chicken salad, seafood salad, and Pasta salads with Protein mixed in. (I am not above picking out the protein and leaving the pasta!) The seafood counter always has cooked/peeled shrimp, so I will buy 3-4 of those at times (less than $2!) and add them to my seafood salad. Lots of options. You just have to ASK for them. -

Core power is a good Protein Drink if your stuck out. Btw greek yogurt may have been your better choice for protein. Another tip is to carry some Protein powder with you. In a.pinch u can add it to water and mix it up and drink it. You will get better at preparing for any happenings. Good luck to you. -
Gluten Intolerant and Sleeve, Anyone have and advice?
mtchick replied to Mini Me Wanna~Be's topic in Food and Nutrition
I have Celiac and was sleeved 11 months ago. One of my favorite foods is Subway????. I order a turkey sub without the bread. They put it in a salad bowl for me and I eat it with a knife & fork. Greek yogurt, string cheese and turkey bites are a staple for me. I don't eat bread at all, even gluten free. Doesn't go down or sit well???? -
On Tuesday I got a tiny fill of .2 cc's. I stayed on liquids and then mushies and then on Friday I tried real food. I had no problems. Yesterday I ate real food and even ate out at supper with no problems. This morning I drank my coffee and took my meds- 9 pills total- no problem. Then at noon I tried to eat some Greek Yogurt. I ate it slowly. It took almost 40 minutes to finish it and it got stuck. I threw it up. Now when I drink I can feel my liquids trickling down and If I take a big drink rather than a sip it feels like it's going to come back up. I burp a lot and then it will finally go down. What's the deal? I swallowed my pills this morning with no issues so what's going on now? Is it possible I irritated my band by swallowing the pills? They were all small except for 2 and those 2 were gelcaps.

Mine was protein shakes, greek yogurt for a total of 60 grams protein, 4 ounces of juice, 8-12 ounce of broth, unlimited sugar free jello and popsicles. This worked very well for me in 3 weeks lost 22 pounds.

Family plunged into panic mode :(
CBT replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Her comment falls squarely within the context of our conversation. She told me I could not lose another pound before surgery. She asked what caloric intake was. She needed to know how much I was working out and what type. She explained the metabolic needs to recover with my goals. She was trying to reassure me that I would not gain weight by eating and being inactive. Her experience is that WLS patients emotionally struggle to eat enough postop to promote wound healing. She also was asking me to trust her so I did not lose too much weight in recovery. It was a long and involved consultation. So I don't think it's a typical conversation for a general surgeon or cardiac surgeon or a orthopedic surgeon to have unless you ask. They will tell you to eat and the demand for calories and Protein is high but they tend to say vague things like "you need it heal" "you need your strength" etc. Probably won't get into metabolic rate. Only us WLS patients get hyper about it :-P I will say the night nurse was a bit freaked when I asked for yogurt at 7pm and then a turkey sandwich at 3am. Lol. -

So sorry you are going through this! I would suggest adding a Protein shake, a yogurt, a Protein Bar, or at least a handful of nuts to carry you through a workout. I am diabetic and I know first hand that low blood sugars are no fun. Even a glass of milk would be helpful--good carbs and protein. Your body is telling you you need more. Maybe just 16 oz. of milk would be enough? I know you're an expert at all this stuff, so I know you know all the answers, but what is your weight goal including plastics? Does your medical team agree? I know you will come through it all! -
Types of yogurt for full liquid phase
agirlnamedfrankie posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I graduate to the full-liquids phase, woohoo! My info packet says that for the full liquids phase (2 weeks for me): Is a milk based diet which includes foods that are liquid or semiliquid and high in Protein, like cream Soups made with non fat milk, yogurt, fruit shakes with non fat milk. I'm starting to look at some yogurts and see that the Fage and Chobani plain have 7g sugar/carbs and anything with flavor has 14-15g of carbs and Dannon Light & Fit has 7-9g of sugar/carbs (but with flavors!). Although there are no guidelines listed in my packet, I'm assuming that I should be keeping low on the sugar here, right? Plain greek yogurt is pretty brutal for me, although I know I can get some of the flavored syrups and use that but the Dannon sounds okay. What types of yogurt did you eat early on? How much sugar was okay and did you have any reactions? -
Truly don't know what to do
Jennifer Rogers replied to Jennifer Rogers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you to everyone that has replied and offered words of wisdom. I will keep trying. Yogurt of any kind, unfortunately, isn't an option for me. It's probably the only food I've had an aversion to my entire life, and it hasn't changed since surgery. I've tried mixing it into smoothies and dinner recipes...if yogurt is in it, I can taste it and I simply cannot tolerate it. My daughter is the same way when it comes to yogurt. However, I will continue to try getting my Genepro down and trying to eat high protein foods the best that I can. I will trust those of you who have said it's a phase and will pass. Good luck to those of you in the same boat as I am. -
Truly don't know what to do
happymama2014 replied to Jennifer Rogers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Protein pudding and Greek yogurt are so good not sure if you tried them. I also like the genepro couldn't Tate it at all I'd try mixing it in a coffee drink or crystal light. Look on bariatric pantry website for some other yummy drinks not protein shakes then try to add a little of the genepro? U can find proteins that taste better than protein shake I know I have. Good luck to you! -
I need help - very slow loss - what to eat? Thyroid?
drmeow replied to Stinab64's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not post-op yet, but I have done a ton of research on nutrition over the last few years (and I have a science background). It IS true that if you eat too little, your body thinks it's starving and slows down your metabolism. When I did strict low carb eating, I could eat 1800, sometimes even 2000 cal per day as long as my carbs were 25 gm or less and still lose weight easily. It's not a simple "calories in, calories out" equation like we've been told for years and years. Carb calories trigger insulin, which triggers storage of those calories. Certainly, eating too much is just as bad, but don't discount the idea that you might be eating too little. You mentioned yogurt - depending on the brand it can have a lot of sugars - both added and natural fruit sugar - you might want to look at labels and make sure you are getting a lot of carbs that way. If you use milk for your protein shakes, milk has pretty high carbs, esp skim milk (remove the fat, it automatically has more milk sugar per cup). I've switched to almond milk for the last 2 yrs - the unsweetened only has a few carbs and it has more calcium than dairy. Otherwise, though, try not to obsess too much over the scale. Measure yourself weekly or every other week and celebrate those losses. One thing I am doing to prepare for WLS is that I've made a big list of the things I hope to achieve with it. Not one of them has to do with a weight or clothing size. Most of them are activities that I've been too heavy to do for a long time. Some will be after a lot of loss, like snow skiing again. Others are much simpler - climb our basement stairs without getting out of breath. Try making a list like that and check them off as you obtain them! -
Ways to switch up the pre op diet!
x0CheekzVSG posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I am on day 4 of my pre op liquid diet, and so far so good. I am allowed 3 Protein shakes a day, broth, SF jello(which I hate) and two 100 calorie yogurts a day. I have been eating everything but the Jello and I am so sick of broth!!!!! If I drink another cup of broth I might puke! Just want to know if anyone had any ideas on something I can add to my broth to give it a different taste? Really desperate and in need of help!!! -

Calling all March bypass surgery dates!
LisaMergs replied to Soexcited's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm now 8 days post op. Still have pain by two of my incisions but been walking over a mile each day. Today was crazy! Was up early to take my youngest to a 7 am dental appointment and walked while he was getting his teeth cleaned. Did some other errands and at 1 sat in the recliner by the fireplace and woke up at MIDNIGHT!!! Holy cow! Obviously I needed it but now 3 am and wide awake! Finding hot tea is my best friend. Tummy does NOT like cold things! Have yet to throw up, dump etc. no issues getting liquids in either but adding all the food ( that's a laugh!! 4 oz 3x a day?!?!) is more of a pain because I'm more interested in getting the Protein in. FYI- Dannon Greek yogurt has a banana cream and a toasted coconut that are unbelievably awesome!!!!! Have a great day all!!! -
Before banding...no way. After banding...if we just move the milk, the yogurt, and the cottage cheese there would be plenty of room :-) Hee hee. Good one Jack Megan

Betty, you don't make a very good plus size gal by saying yuck to food. It's food! How can you not like ricotta when that's what's in lasagna? I missed my morning yogurt so anything sounds good right now.

Count me in girls! I just went to a Project Fresh class 2 nights ago and got a Calcium brochure. I was shocked to learn how easy it would be for me to add in somemore calcium in my diet each day. (I'm probably in dire need of it!) I was also in shock to read this on the brochure: Too much salt (sodium) and Protein can spell trouble for bones, too. Both cause calcium loss, which is a problem when your diet is low in calcium. Caffeine also causes a small amount of calcium loss. (Salt, protein, and caffeine are only a problem when calcium intakes are very low, another great reason to get enough calcium everyday!) So that settles it for me ladies! I'm totally there! We go shopping tomorrow, and I will be sure to pick up some yogurt, ice cream, cheese, sour cream (great for making snack dip out of), and baked Beans (beans have 150mg of calcium in a 1 cup serving!). I will post the list on this brochure here too, and that may help everyone figure out which products pack the most punch. Good luck everyone!!!!
