Tried cottage cheese for the first time - help me jazz it up
Travelher replied to trekker954's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I don't like yogurt so cottage cheese was my go to in the early days. I liked taking a bag of frozen mixed berries. cooking them with a little lemon juice and a little splenda and then pureeing them and straining to make a berry sauce. then I'd add that to the cottage cheese. yum. -

I like to make some of the main course muffins from Emily bites. They aren't really muffins, they just use muffin tins to make small portions! I can usually eat 1/2-1 of a muffin and it keeps it interesting and easy to grab and low calorie. My favorites are the Thai peanut or Rueben. http://www.emilybites.com/category/main-course-muffinscupcakes I also like some flavors of the Quest chips, quest or think thin Protein bars, premier Protein shakes, siggis yogurt, or jerky. Dumping is supposed to be less common with the gastric sleeve but 3 days post op I started to dump and let me tell you it is no fun simply because I added a Greek yogurt that had fruit on the bottom to my Protein and I wasn't thinking about the sugar content and that Greek yogurt or the fruit rather than that Greek yogurt. I was up all night I was shaky I couldnt focus on anything I felt like I was going to pass out. So ever since then I've stayed away from refined sugars and so far so good. Three days post-surgery, the journey so far
Tufflaw replied to Tufflaw's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well one week ago today I was leaving my office and mentally preparing for surgery the next day. Now I'm 6 days post-surgery and feeling pretty good! Losing about a pound a day, and it's easier to eat and drink every day. I still get some weird feelings while eating every so often, but nothing too bad, and drinking feels totally normal. Walking and moving around is easy and pain-free. Two days in a row I had some blood spots from the large incision on my shirt but I'm pretty sure that's because my daughter went to hug me too fast and headbutted me right in the abdomen - that sucked. I've been able to eat the following, all homemade and pureed: Egg salad, tuna salad, turkey salad, chicken salad, yoplait light yogurt (boston cream pie flavor, yum), also scrambled eggs with some ricotta mixed in. I went to my sister's for christmas and brought some turkey salad in a container but she had tuna there so I ate that instead, it wasn't pureed but it was mashed enough and I just chewed a lot, and it was fine. I have about 3 - 3.5 oz per serving. The chicken salad was a bit of a disappointment. I bought some chicken breasts and put them in a crockpot overnight with some low-sodium chicken broth, mixed in some garlic powder, onion powder, and some barbecue sauce just for taste. Cooked for 8 hours, it smelled delicious! Shredded it, cooked another 30 minutes, then in the blender to puree. Tasted a lot like chopped liver - which I like - but not very good chopped liver. Mixed in some low-fat mayo and it's not terrible, just not as delicious as I was hoping Still better than the liquid diet though, I guess. Doing OK with liquid intake, that isn't really a problem, and my Protein intake has been right on point. Still taking in less than a thousand calories a day but I'm not hungry. That should increase once my portion sizes increase. I'm waiting for the day the MyFitnessPal app doesn't give me a warning at the end of each day that I'm not eating enough! I'm proud of myself that I haven't cheated ONCE since the whole thing started, going to try to keep that up. My wife made a pumpkin cheesecake for the holidays and it looked unbelievable. Right consistency for me too, but I decided to stick with the post-surgery diet. There will be time for cheesecakes (small portions) in the future when I'm at my goal. Edit: Don't know if these have been posted elsewhere, but I read two very interesting articles today in the NYT about bariatric surgery, in case anyone is interested: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/health/what-is-bariatric-surgery.html and http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/health/bariatric-surgery.html -

I am not a doctor, but... (post-op diet progression)
Andell replied to theantichick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was terribly sick of the protein shakes by the end of my first 2 weeks as well. I found zip-lock style freeze pop tubes on Amazon and used them to freeze Syntrax nectar drink (roadside lemonade flavor) into freeze pops and would eat those. I used unflavored protein powder in chicken and beef bouillon (the trick is to dissolve it in warm Water with a blender and then mix it with the hot bouillon) to get something more savory and not sweet. I drank apple cider (not an option for everyone because of the carbs, but maybe a decaf herbal tea?) for something hot and sweet. I added unflavored protein powder to everything I could stand adding it to. (Didn't change the flavor, but changed texture for some things that I didn't like.) My surgeon included greek yogurt in the full liquids list, so I ate that for protein as well. Another thing to keep in mind is that while it's GREAT if you can get the protein in the first couple of weeks, and you should certainly try to, the MOST important thing is the fluids. The body can get by with less than ideal protein for a while, but if you get dehydrated it can mean a trip to the ER, so if nothing else, get the fluids in. For constipation, check with your team. I was advised to use a stool softener (Dulcolax) and if that didn't help in a day or two, to add fiber to drinks (Metamucil) and if that didn't help to try Milk of Magnesia. And as a last-ditch effort if nothing else worked, I could try Magnesium Citrate. But my surgeon told me it's not abnormal to go several days between BMs early on after surgery because we're eating so much less bulk, and the high protein does tend to back us up. So not to expect a BM every day or necessarily even every other day. I've had to keep fiber added to my diet daily since surgery to keep things regular and add in stool softeners periodically. My PCP gave me a recipe for a "fiber applesauce" but it calls for prune juice and I just can't stomach it. you should share that recipe, I'm one of those crazy folks who loved prunes and prime juice. I agree. I consider snacks the same as meals and vice versa. I'm just getting bored and want to get more creative. I eat nuts yogurt cheeses lunch meats. As a grab and go thing but I'm just so over it. I wanna make a meal and then eat it multiple times. I've tried the quiche or the egg muffins and after eating it more than once it makes me weird nauseous! But it always has so it's not a sleeve thing
-
Good question. I kind of think my Snacks and meals cross over. I eat when I'm hungry, but since I don't eat large amounts, each "meal" could also be the same as what I eat for a snack. I just keep the portions reasonable. I find that preparing ahead of time and freezing some items, like crustless quiche is very helpful. I pack my lunch every day and will take string cheese, nuts, yogurt, cottage cheese, sliced organic apple with peanutbutter, bean salad, Protein shake (coffee or Peanut Butter are my favorites).

I think half a cup of anything is too large of a serving at two weeks out. Fage yogurt is a great suggestion. Personally, I would pass on the cream of wheat as it won't help with hitting protein goals unless you mixed in protein powder.

I'm about 10 days post op..
theantichick replied to AC3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
that one depends on a bunch of things. My surgeon said if the pill was the size of an M&M or smaller (and I assumed not the peanut ones) I could take them staying the day after surgery with my Protein shakes out with applesauce. But my surgeon allowed those things on the full liquid phase that started day 2 if we could keep Water down on day 1. Other surgeons have their patients crush the meds and take with Jello or yogurt unless they are extended release which are never safe to crush. Check with your surgeon or team. sent from mobile device -
Half of a cup of Fage plain yogurt also 1/2 a cup (cooked) cream of wheat..

I start tomorrow. My diet lists plain yogurt in a smoothie only, as long as I stay within my daily calorie limit. Pray, Speak, Do! ~Meesh~ -
I have a food scale and always weigh my food or use a measuring cup when needed. I am at 6 weeks post op and eating regular foods now. I can only get in around 2.5 ounces of meat or 1/4 cup of yogurt or cottage cheese per meal at this point. Those amounts always fill me up along with about 5 small bites of veggies.

I put yogurt with milk in the blender and made a shake. I could use regular yogurt, not Greek cause it is too thick.

Plant based diet and sleeve....
robin125 replied to Newme17's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I've gone back and forth between lacto-ovo vegetarian and vegan since 2011. I lost some weight but remained big (my set point and metabolism were a mess). I had RNY on March 7, 2016 and I'm down to 235 lbs from 410 lbs before my two-week pre-op diet. Since surgery, I've been lacto-ovo. I'm male, 6', and consume 1300 - 1800 calories and 70 - 100 grams of Protein daily depending on exercise for the day (I workout 6x weekly alternating strength with cardio). For the first month after surgery I was doing good to get 800 calories and 60 grams of protein in a day. I find it to be easier to get protein with yogurt, cheese, skim milk and the occasional egg. I would like to move back toward veganism, though, but many meat analogues no longer agree with me. Meatless crumbles, TVP, meatless meatballs, and Tofurkey deli slices are fine, but commercial veggie burgers and other products give me trouble. I make yummy black bean burgers, lentil-barely loaves, and TVP & bean chili that I can digest fine. I don't care much for soy Protein shakes. I like Vega One, but it can get expensive. I buy the store brand whey protein at Natural Grocers for cheap, but I only drink the occasional shake these days. I do eat a salad almost every day and add cheese, sunflower seeds, and sometimes a diced poached egg. I didn't return to salads until about 10 weeks out and stick with leafy mixed greens or spinach. I think you'll likely need to use dairy for protein the first two months after surgery and experiment from there. We all have different experiences with which foods do or don't work. There was a guy in my WLS program who was vegan and used mostly soy shakes, tofu scrambles, and TVP, so it can be done if you can handle a lot of soy. Also, there is a "WLS Vegetarians" group on FB that includes many vegans who share ideas. Sent from my LGMS550 using the BariatricPal App -
